This coming from a man who openly admits that the only MK games he ever liked were 1 and 2?

Raiden fucks up. Rocks fall. Everybody died.
The gist of it is that for some reason Kahn needs to invade Earthrealm for the Elder Gods to chastise him. Raiden fucks up big time by trying to fight him with his goons.
Surprisingly Liu kang stops being a goon and Cage is actually entertaining somewhat. Their collective manliness then proceeds to pimpsmack Raiden.
Oh and Kung Lao tries to fight Kahn a la MK3 ending and dies. Kitana is captured and dies. Nightwolf dies by having a squirrel eat his eyeballs out offscreen. Sub-Zero gets interred as a cyborg instead of Smoke.
Kah struck a deal with Quan Chi and now the spirits of those dead all are in the hands of Quan Chi. Cue evenb more lethal invasion from the Netherrealm into Outhouseworld. Oh, and Raiden tries to bargain with Quan Chi who shows him he is a playa' and Raiden gets dumped on by everyone.
The ending is basically "Nice going you coolie hatted dickwad."

Personally, if I would be pressured into writing a story stricktly accordingly to the first two installments with only the most meager deviations "allowed" by the unpleasable fanbase I would do the same.
Get one thing right: the author has absolute freedom to do what he or she wishes with it's brainchild, consequences and who finds what in whatever taste/distaste are a different matter altogether.

^ You got it. People are really acting weird around here, like their life is over because of these story changes. Personally I see them for the better. This is just the base of what could potentially be an even more epic story in the sequels to come.

Like Cyborg Sub-Zero for example. Now I love Sub-Zero, he's my favorite character. But after 20 years he really needed something to shake things up in my opinion. This new take on him has a number of ways they could take it. Maybe Scorpion wants to save Sub-Zero from his automated existence, maybe Sub-Zero will regain his humanity and vow to destroy the Lin Kuei because like him they are a shadow of what they once were. You could make new stories involving Noob Saibot and Smoke as well. I believe him taking Smoke's place as the cyborg opens up more ideas for storytelling then had it stayed Smoke.

I love that some of the heroes were killed off. They probably won't stay dead even though I wish they would, but that takes balls too do. The story is just awesome in my opinion. Raiden is doing what he believes is right at the expense of really fucking up peoples lives. He does what needed to be done but he fucked alot of people over in the process. That opens up ideas for people like Jade or Liu Kang (if he's alive) to go after Raiden for letting people they care about die, and that his visions are not the right path to take earthrealm down. I'm glad the story doesn't end on a "Yeah we are the good guys and we won!" note. Yeah they essentially won, but look at what they lost. As far as Quan Chi and Shinnok planning to invade earthrealm and outworld, well that just sounds fucking fantastic. Seeing the gates of hell open up to invade the two realms just sounds so awesome. I can picture Quan Chi, Shinnok and the brotherhood of shadow bringing their minions to battle earthrealm and outworld's best. Maybe even have earthrealm and outworld join together to stop the threat....man it just sounds so good to me.

So after reading all of that, all I can really say is, "eh".
You've got the character bios and the character endings that you get from what I assume would be the arcade mode.
Then you have this story mode. So there's a few ways they can go about this.
1) They do a splintered timeline where both canon can exist. The original story, plus the stuff that happens in this game.
2) This whole story is just a "what if" scenario and is made just for the sake of telling a new version of the events of MK1-3, and only some events will be chosen as canon combined with some of the arcade endings for characters. This will then serve as the continuation of MK, in the new time line or, as stated above, a splintered time line.
3) This is made completely canon and guys like Rex and Razor along with others will bite down on cyanide pills resulting in the biggest video-game related mass suicide to date.
Personally, I'll go with option 2. NRS is no stranger to ret-coning entire games in the series, even if they have been pitched as "retellings" or new beginnings. I don't see that changing with this either if aspects of this story don't work.
I think the things they'll keep canon though will probably end up being the new character bios. Sonya "iron box" blade having daddy issues, Smoke being sacrificed as a little kid and reincarnated as some weird demon thing from Prague, Kung Lao being the reincarnated version of the Great Kung Lao. Stuff like that has a stronger shot at being the stuff that's carried forward than the actual scenario that retells MK1-3.

I only said to myself the other day that I'd give this website a break to refrain from spoilers, but since a friend of mine spilled the beans to me earlier about the storyline leak, there where no more spoilers left for me to avoid.
Having said that, Ha. Fucking. Ha.
Reading through these pages I literally can't help but laugh at how seriously you guys are taking this leak. I honestly don't think the community would be as shocked if Boon HIMSELF dropped dead of a heart attack. I don't think I'll ever understand the hysteria that comes along with the members of this site, it's both confusing and from a relative-outsider's perspective fuckin hillarious.
Let me go all Kanye West on you guys and tell ya something. I grew up with this game. I began playing Mortal Kombat when I was 3 with my big sister and 19 years later I'm still a fan. I know the original storyline, I know all of the character ties and changes, I know Mortal Kombat inside out.
Did Mortal Kombat need a change? Yes it did
Did Mortal Kombat promise us change? Yes it did.
Did Boon ever promise us an exact re-telling of the series from MK1-MK3? No. No he didn't.
I'm glad he had the balls to go back to the story that is known for being MK's Golden Era, and completely change and distort it. I'm glad he took liberties with the well known characters and I'm glad MK is going in a whole new direction because I already own MK1, MK2 and MK3, and if I want that storyline again I can always go back and play them.
Nostalgia is a great thing but if we cling on to it we're not leaving much space for a franchise we love to grow. We needed things to change. We needed the characters to recieve new outcomes. We needed this to happen because Mortal Kombat Armageddon was a result from an increasingly stale storyline.
Am I shocked? At some things, yes, but I welcome it. It's about time fans hung up their nostalgia goggles and just accepted the fact that this game needs to grow in a new direction if it wants to continue. From reading the leak I'm actually more excited to see how THIS storyline pans out than ever before. In fact I'm even prepared to look past Rain's exclusion from the plot entirely because I'm already hooked and intrigued on what the present characters have to offer to it.
You wanted Story details? You got it. Now your unhappy with it. A classic case of being careful what you wish for.

The story & bio leaks sound exciting. A lot of things got shaken up. Some things seem like nods to fanfics & such. I believe someone brought up the possibility of Ermac being Jerrod before. Change & death are inevitable as well as necessary. Where was this game 10 years ago?
If you've read all the spoilers & not just bits & pieces, you'd understand the whole story better. It does all make sense & tie together. There are amazing possibilities for the sequel that will be refreshing if they follow through with them correctly. I can't wait to start speculating, but I'll wait till I don't have to use spoiler tags.

Assuming of all this information is accurate and complete, it's such a strange and disappointing outcome. I think anyone interested in the MK story should've had an inkling all along that this would be a likely eventuality. We were given a premise that ultimately, to be at all effective, had to occupy the redundant space of being painfully repetitive, or go for broke and be disturbingly deviant. We've got the latter.
Perhaps the most disappointing fact was that, up until this point, the game has been sold as a chance to do things relatively right, wrapped up in a cushy promise of familiarity. Getting gameplay up to par has always been an overdue priority for MK, and as needless as the MKII nostalgia would be, at least it had the potential to give them a stable platform to work with. Alas; no. Anyone buying back into the franchise because of it's apparent improvements and iconic nostalgia will be bitterly disappointed -- again.
Armageddon was a bit souring as a game, but ultimately moved the story forward in an acceptable manner. It left us with infinite possibilities, but instead, we got a deviation into MKvsDC -- a lacklustre game that opted to go the conventional route and contribute nothing to the story. This should've been the time to establish a strong forward moving base, asserting the brand and it's properties under new owners. Instead, it seems to be fulfilling the worst expectations of a change in ownership that, ironically, nobody really had.
There were a lot of claims that WB would provide the potential for the MK team to do what they couldn't under MIdway's pressured, deadline oriented enviroment. I personally found that quite hard to believe, and perhaps a misunderstanding of what a lot of fans had to complain about. I think, at least from the story perspective, these leaks confirm that the parent company changes nothing. This is still the MK team who have been prone to distractions, missed opportunities, and questionable decision making.
At the end of the day, when you move forward with a project like this you expect a certain amount of vocal disagreement. When you know you're probably going to sell and convince a majority of fans, regardless of what you do, you can take that inevitable disagreement with a pinch of salt and decide to push through some barriers. To me, it seems such a shame that this would be the push they'd make. Many will disagree, I'm sure.
For me, it's looking like third time's the charm, as far as bargain bins go.
