That's not quite true. His Trilogy bio said, and I quote, "he chose to betray his homeland rather than suffer at the hands of Kahn's extermination Squads."
He knew full well he was Edenian and what Kahn did to Edenia, he willingly chose to work for him.
What Kitana told him in his ending that he didn't know and made him change his mind is that Kahn had killed his father. Which turned out to be not true anyway because that general wasn't his real father. And the whole reason that ending never became canon was because they decided they prefer Rain to be an evil character. The kind who, even if Kitana tried to convince him to join her, he'd still stick with Kahn because all he cares about is himself and being on the side most profitable or most likely to win.
It seems the only difference of opinion here is that you're speaking strictly in terms of established canon, while I'm thinking of ways I'd like to see them expand on it. I know Rain is now "officially" evil, and I'm totally cool with that.
But I would rather see an example of this than just be told it and accept it as fact. There are already enough "evil just because" characters in MK. I wouldn't mind some of them having a bit more complexity than that.
Erm, isn't that more or less exactly the kind of story scenario I was requesting?

I was just explaining how he's never had a "secret identity".

Fair enough- I suppose to me it's at least somewhat implied by the fact he wears a mask. I'm sure this is just to keep him a "true" ninja, but I always like to imagine deeper motivations than are probably there.
In fact, you gave me another idea for Rain's "expanded" story-
Kitana *could* tell Rain that Kahn had his father murdered in an attempt to win him over. In a twist, we find out Rain actually (knowingly) killed his own father while working for Kahn. In an at least flimsy attempt to keep his identity as one of Kahn's premiere agents hidden, he dons the ninja mask. Once Kitana puts him on the spot by "revealing" his past, he feigns shock and sympathy for Kitana... then she catches the sound of Kahn's agents approaching the location she presumed secure. She escapes, but knowing Rain must've betrayed her, her heart is broken, and he emerges as the traitor we all know him to be. Everyone's story strengthens, IMO.

Eh, I wouldn't mind not seeing him in the game. If he's in, cool, if not, oh well.

Eh...it doesn't quite work given that Rain is supposed to have been a child when Edenia was conquered.
Huh...It never occured to me until just this moment that he's actually the exact opposite of Kitana.
Both start out exactly the same, but when Edenia's conquered, she's taken in by Kahn and raised as his own. He is smuggled out of the realm and grows up outside of Outworld, knowing Kahn is evil.
As an adult, Kitana discovers her true origin and turns against Kahn. As an adult, Rain who always knew (most of) his origin, willingly joins him.

That doesn't necessarily have to be mutually exclusive-
Say Rain *is* still a child when Kahn invades.
Then, instead of a general, Rain's father is simply a man critical of Edenia's new conquerer. Rain grows into early adulthood oppressed under Kahn, only to learn one day he is, in truth, the son of Argus. A flood of emotion consumes Rain at that moment- he is both furious at Kahn for conquering "his" world, and hurt by the fact that his "father" lied about his past. Devising a plan to eventually wrest control of Edenia away from the outsider Kahn, he joins his ranks as an assassin. Like Kahn's other assassins, he dons the mask for anonymity. Deciding that Rain needed to prove his loyalty, Kahn orders that his first victim be his adoptive father, who, by this time, has become the leader of an underground resistance dangerous to Kahn. Rain's father, not knowing his "son" has learned of his divine origins and become untrustworthy, allows Rain the access he needs to destroy the resistance and cement himself in Kahn's favor. After becoming one of Kahn's favored agents, Rain is introduced to another of his top assassins- Kitana.
Being one of Kahn's most trusted lackeys, he soon learns of Kitana's true past, and realizes he can easily use her to bring down Kahn and open the door for his own ascension... the only thing he cares about at this point.
So he fools Kitana into trusting him by telling her the truth about herself.
She is shocked, but grateful to learn the truth of her past... and she will make Kahn pay. Sensing a golden opportunity to remove his two greatest obstacles in one move, he leads Kahn to Kitana in the hopes they will weaken one another to the point where he can easily finish them both off, and claim Edenia as his own.
Sensing the treachery afoot, Kitana flees and manages to hide in Earthrealm, waiting until a better time to act.
Kahn, however, remains completely unaware that one of his most trusted enforcers plans to take Edenia for himself.
Rain bides his time and waits for his chance to strike,
but he would eventually be undone by the woman he once tried to manipulate...

I really hope he makes it in. I loved teaming him up with ermac in umk3 (snes) :D I hope they bring back the lighting and super roundhouse. use the super roundhouse in his xray move. a kick that power has to shatter something right?

I hope he's in and this time he becomes a character who is not a traitor to the realm (too many of these)
This time I want him to change his story, an Edenian Warrior who seeks to restore the glory of his realm (while posing as Kahns general), however believes that he is better suited to lead Edenia than Kitana. While she needs him as he is trusted by Kahn he constantly argues about how to dispose of Kahn.
Also I hope Ermac becomes his main adversery. Shao Kahn gives them the rank of general and two must out do each other to win his favour. Ermac in order to seek freedom from Kahn and Rain to get close enough to kill Shao Kahn.

How can a retelling totally change a fighter? It's like saying "This time I want Mileena to be beautiful and Kitana to be ugly". The reason Raiden went back, is to change some "events" to prevent Armageddon....it can't be possible that during this return characters like Rain change so much that they go from betraying their Realm to trying to save it!

Yeah I always saw rain and ermac as counterparts like scorpion/subzero and noob/smoke

A rivalry with Ermac would be cool, but how could they incorporate it? Ermac's technically on his side in this game as they'll both be working for Shao Khan

I hate to admit it, but given that he's already on the periphery,
I could see them changing his story more than most anyone else's.
I hope they don't, though- I like his story in Armageddon,
but I'd love to see how he got to that point (esp. if it involves Kitana)
Pretty bummed there was no info on Rain in last nights leaks-
sounds like he would have passed along some info if he'd had any
And I always saw Noob as Rain's counterpart,
but that's because I'm from the days of MKT, not MKD

I've said it before, I'll say it again; I'd love it if they applied some level of canon to Rain's MKT ending, and have it established that Kitana does confront him with the truth during the invasion, but all the details thereafter are rendered moot by him replying with something along the lines of. "So, Kahn killed my father. And...?"
I've envisioned him as this complete and utter bastard out for self since his MKT bio way back when; that's why I loved his MKA take, and the fact that it stuck with that aspect of his presentation. It made the character acceptable in my eyes, where before I was one of the more vocal of his detractors. Kitana's revelation could lead to him researching his lineage (probably for selfish reasons, like searching for any wealth his father might have sequestered away, or some such) coming upon his real heritage, and giving him this not-entirely-unjustified entitlement complex, being the son of a god and all.
Man, Rain's living proof to me that they can make any dipshit character interesting given just the right touch.

If he is in it would be great because he had real nice moves.
If he isn't in it would be a bummer but not the end of the world

I liked Rain a lot too. I hope he comes back. His new design in the last two games was cool because it was different, but I'd say the worst of all the redesigns for the ninjas in my opinion. I'd like to see them do a little less with him.
Lots of potential for that character though.

he is my favorite character and I would be way disappointed if he's not in. He is way to cool to be left out in the final roster!

I already did
And to date, it is still the *only* thing I have ever used Twitter for.
