Series co-creator Ed Boon has been on the promotion circuit for Mortal Kombat II, but the NetherRealm Studios Creative Director isn't forgetting his roots as his Bartender cameo takes him to the big screen. A new interview has confirmed development on new titles -- and MK is not in the clear yet. Read on for details:

In a new interview with Collider; Boon has commented on MK's cinematic legacy, the rivalry with another major fighting game franchise, but also what's in store for NetherRealm Studios, who ended support of Mortal Kombat 1 almost a year ago. The the release of Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Editionin May of 2025 saw an unexpected, early close to downloadable content and services, leading some to speculate a sequel to Injustice 2 could be the preferred option.

Boon declined to tease anything specific, but has confirmed the developer has "multiple parts on the stove" as part of its development cycle, noting that another Mortal Kombat game is being pursued. He promises "a lot of great announcements" are coming at an unspecified time in the future.

I wish I could tease something. I think if I teased and gave it away, I would probably get in trouble. But we're definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game, and we're definitely doing more, as well, so there are a lot of parts on the stove, not just with games, though, with other forms of media and whatnot. So, we’ve got a lot of great announcements that are coming.

The path to the next NetherRealm Studios release has been a complicated one amidst a corporate restructure of Warner Bros Games, and the on-going saga of Warner Brothers Discovery's prospective sale to Paramount Skydance. The 2025 gaming restructure saw Mortal Kombat become one of four key pillars of intellectual property, including Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and DC Comics, which spawned the previous two Injustice titles.

As reported by IGN in February last year, DC Studios Co-Chiefs Peter Safran and James Gunn confirmed discussions with NetherRealm Studios. Mortal Kombat later factored in to a mega-crossover with DC Comics and multiple other franchises in the DC KO: Boss Battle special. Injustice also made its last appearance in a 2023 crossover featuring Jon Kent, Superman, revisiting the troubled world introduced in 2013's Injustice: Gods Among Us and multiple tie-in comics series.

This isn't the first time Ed Boon has teased multiple projects in development. Prior to the announcement of Mortal Kombat 1, he referred to a similar scenario during an "Ask Me Anything" session in 2022. Fans with long memories may also remember rumors sparked by a Nvidia GeForce Now database breach that leaked a possible title of "Injustice: Gods Will Fall".
