ScrewAttack Death Battle - Shao Kahn versus Bison!
The Emperor of Outworld faces the Dictator of Shadaloo in an ultimate Death Battle!

With the 20th anniversary of Mortal Kombat II looming over 2013, it only makes sense that this be the year of Shao Kahn! It was all those years ago that the threat of Outworld was given a terrifying skull-face in the form of one of the most memorable fighting game bosses in history! Naturally, that status isn't without its challengers, and ScrewAttack DEATH BATTLE has decided to pit Kahn against his greatest rival: Street Fighter's resident Dictator -- M. Bison!

For anyone who wasted hours of their youth lurking between arcade cabinets -- this really is the ultimate boss battle! The sounds of Street Fighter II have echoed through time, often smothering their brutal American counterpart to the frustration of MK diehards. It wasn't until the 2011 reboot that Mortal Kombat was truly able to stand toe-to-toe with the grand daddy of fighters, threatening to uppercut their head off and steal their soul!

Of course, gameplay has only so much dominion over the world of fictional premise. As the old saying goes, 'Death Battle is not about fatality inputs, but rather, fictional life.' You can convert cheap super-moves and high damage percentages into some measure of canonical higher power, but the concepts behind Bison and Shao Kahn go much bigger than any side-to-side fighter can contain!

So, who wins the epic battle of bosses?...

MKOmmunity Artwork by & .

Mortal Kombat Online is contractually obligated to have an obvious bias -- no matter how much we're secretly massive Street Fighter fans. That bias hasn't been shared by Screw Attack however, who are yet to grant a victory in any of their previous Mortal Kombat features!

Like Thor v Raiden -- there's a thematic connection in play that arguably favours one fighter over the other. Afterall, Bison's indomitable soul may be the source of his incredible power, but it's the souls of others that have fuelled centuries of Shao Kahn's rule as Emperor of Outworld!

As is customary, ScrewAttack are a bit more sympathetic to lesser adaptations of the commanding source material. You'll spot some references to licensed movies, cartoons & comics that we hardcore fans probably wouldn't be as inclined to factor. Fortunately, none of this weighs too heavily on the outcome, and we'd have to say the Death Battle judges have come at this one with a pretty fair approach.

Really comparing the two characters is difficult. The scale of their world and the primary opponents within are far from 1:1. Twenty years of inter-dimensional conflict has seen Shao Kahn bedevil the devil himself, and enter into feuds with gods and immortals! The scope of Shao Kahn's conquests is almost unfathomable, expanding to include multiple entire realms! Bison's psycho power may have seen him reach something approximate to godhood, but even Shadaloo's aspirations for global conquest end at domination over one world. Thanks to a long run of crossovers with the likes of SNK, Tekken & Marvel Comics, Bison has had opportunities to challenge other worlds, but he's never actually succeeded.

Even our most generous arguments have to favour Shao Kahn, but we'll let you watch the DEATH BATTLE yourself to find out how ScrewAttack called it! Once you've checked it out, debate the result with the rest of the MK home team on the forums!

Shao Kahn is currently attempting to claim a far greater title as 2013 Supreme Mortal Kombat Champion! Having defeated Drahmin in the First Round, The Emperor will return next month in Round 2!

This annual Mortal Kombat Online tradition is an opportunity to gather every MK fan together to take stock of the kombatants that make the series great! Register to have YOUR say in daily Supreme Champion polls and on the forum!

Injustice DLC: Man of Steel Superman Skin Coming July
Man of Steel Inspired Superman Skin Coming to Injustice DLC in July!

Popular demand for movie inspired costumes appears to have been answered! Hot on the heels of the massive theatrical opening of Man of Steel -- Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment announce Man of Steel downloadable content coming to Injustice: Gods Among Us!

Superman [pictured above] is based on the film version played by Henry Cavill. The Man of Steel skin will be available for download in July for an individual cost of $0.99 (80 MS Points). You can see the Man of Steel in action in the recently release General Zod Gameplay trailer.

This marks the second DLC crossover skin inspired by a current WB film or television series! Green Arrow got the live-action treatment with an Arrow skin voiced by show star Stephen Amell [full story].

Also coming to Injustice DLC July 2nd: General Zod -- the final character of four in the [first] Season Pass. NetherRealm Studios' unique version of the villain joins Lobo, Batgirl and the Jim Lee designed Mortal Kombat guest: Scorpion.

Also available at the start of July: digital copies of Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition for PC! The hit 2012 Komplete fighter makes its way to Steam in a digital-first release, before going wide with a retail box copy in August [full story].

Injustice DLC: General Zod Gameplay Trailer
Come son of Jor-El. Kneel before Zod! Man of Steel DLC villain gets trailer!

Fresh off his E3 tie-in reveal on Conan [full story]; Kryptonian villain supreme General Zod has received a customary showcase of his Injustice: Gods Among Us downloadable gameplay!

Possessing all the powers of a Kryptonian under Earth's yellow sun -- the militant menace reapplies abilities like; super strength, flight, heat vision in ways that successfully distinguish him from Superman.

While the much talked about Zod design fails to impress -- much of the characters appeal is in the attitude. Turning the arrogance up to eleven, the Injustice version of Zod makes Terence Stamp's definitive Superman II appearance look positively humble. With arms folded behind his back and a win quote that says he always wins this is a Super-villain to put Lex Luthor to shame!

Giving some grunt to the unintimidating design is a harsh Super Move already winning fans over with its over-the-top brutality! Playing off the Superman II inspired intro, Zod powers his opponent through The Moon, only to send them hurtling back towards Earth! A great flourish!

General Zod is the fourth and final character in the DLC Season Pass. The 3-for-4 deal already includes Lobo, Batgirl & Jim Lee designed Mortal Kombat guest: Scorpion! Following widespread speculation and rumor, it has been confirmed more downloadable characters will be coming soon. General Zod goes live in July 2 for an individual cost of $4.99 (400 MS Points).

To coincide with Zod's arrival in Injustice: Gods Among Us -- costumes inspired by the Man of Steel feature film will also be released to XBL and PSN. Injustice DLC is expected to hit Nintendo Wii U in the Summer [full story]. Details on exact content are pending. Discuss all the news in the DC Universe Injustice forum.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Series II Coming September 2013
Live-Action Sequel Series Mortal Kombat: Legacy Awaits September Premiere!

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Season II is the follow-up to the 2011 live-action series directed by Kevin Tancharoen. With the debut trailer released back in February, the series can finally look forward to a confirmed premiere in September!

Legacy II star Mark Dacascos leaked the schedule through a Facebook update posted to his official fan account. The cast and crew were treated to a special screening of the series, last night. Brian Tee and Casper Van Dien were also in attendance and shared photos via Twitter.

Top Row [Left to Right]: Brian Tee, Ian Anthony Dale, Kevin Tancharoen, Casper Van Dien, Eric Jacobus, John Wusah Bottom Row: Samantha Jo, Michelle Lee, Mark Dacascos. Source: @CasperVanDien

Legacy II will continue the saga begun with the first series: introducing Liu Kang (Tee), Kung Lao (Dacascos) and Shang Tsung (Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa) as fueding stakes in the struggle of the Mortal Kombat tournament.

The series is loosely based on the plot of the original game(s), with some significant liberties. Brian Tee discussed the new, conflicted interpretation of his Liu Kang in an April interview. The archetypal martial arts hero will be among the most altered of the characters appearing in the series.

Casper Van Dien leads a list of new additions to the cast, starring as Johnny Cage opposite Dan Southworth (Kenshi), David Lee McInnis (Raiden), John Wusah (Bi-Han), Harry Shum (Sub-Zero), Michelle Lee (Mileena), Eric Jacobus (Stryker) and Kim Do Nguyen (Ermac). Ian Anthony Dale and Samantha Jo return as Scorpion and Kitana.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy II will be available freely via YouTube host Machinima. Get the first official look via the previously released Legacy II debut trailer! Discuss Legacy episodes, news and much more in the Media & Merchandise forum.

Injustice DLC: General Zod Screenshot Spotlight
Injustice Facebook Releases HQ Screenshot of July DLC Villain - Zod!

Kryptonian menace General Zod is the fourth and final character in the Injustice: Gods Among Us DLC Season Pass! The villain made his playable debut on the floor of E3 [full story], and in a featured appearance during last night's Clueless Gamer review on Conan [watch it]!

Thanks to the Injustice Facebook; you can now scrutinize Superman's cinematic arch-nemesis in all his Injustice glory [below].

Damn! Alex Perry looks pissed!
Click to Enlarge High Quality Full Screenshot.

Contrary to previous reports; the Injustice version of Zod has very little in common with recent incarnations from comic books, or film. In fact, tracing the inspirations behind the bald NetherRealm design is easier said than done. At a stretch, you might find vague references to the grizzled, bald Zod designed by Jim Lee for 2004's For Tomorrow. Otherwise, it's in the neighbourhood of this and that.

Like any Kryptonian exposed to Earth's yellow sun - Zod possesses all the amazing powers associated with his heroic junior: Superman. That strength, durability, flight and heat vision are put to good use in the Injustice downloadable character's move set -- best captured by the Super Move that plows opponents through the Earth's Moon, before sending them back to terra firma! The impressive special attack was featured in the Conan segment.

The announcement of General Zod obviously syncs up well with the wide release of The Man of Steel in cinemas (today) -- but you'll have to wait until July to download the movie villain as fighting game DLC.

Michael Shannon stars as a different, but equally powerful version of the character made famous in 1980 by Terrence Stamp (in Superman II). At present, it seems unlikely there'll be any alternate skins based on either movie incarnation. Creative Director Ed Boon described the trials involved in likeness rights and internal edicts during a 2008 Mortal Kombat Online interview: "... we can't make our Superman look like Christover Reeve or Brandon Routh or anybody who's played him before. We need to make our own Superman."

Season Pass DLC characters are available individually for $4.99 (or 400 MS Points). Lobo, Batgirl & Mortal Kombat's Scorpion are available now. The possibility of future character releases remains likely, pending confirmation [full story]. Martian Manhunter has already been teased in a post-credits trailer cameo.

DLC is expected to finally reach the Nintendo Wii U version in the Summer! Costume packs based on Blackest Night & Red Son are newly released for PSN and XBL ($2.99ea). Learn more about the history of [Black Lantern] Superman in a special Mortal Kombat Online feature!

General Zod Debuts in Conan Clueless Gamer Segment
Conan OBrien Reviews Injustice on Show; Reveals Zod in Full Flight!

As promised; celebrity redhead Conan O'Brien has grappled with the lofty issues of Injustice: Gods Among Us in his semi-regular Clueless Gamer segment! The Conan review marks the official debut of General Zod -- fourth character in the DLC Season Pass!

The TV talk show host [not to be confused with The Barbarian] and eponymous clueless gamer takes a fresh, critical look at the hugely successful DC Comics fighting game and surrounding promotion. Injustice: Gods Among Us #1 -- the tie-in comic book -- comes with high praises, described as, "... a new level of nerd." containing "a lot of nudity." Expressed through combo, Conan rates the game a B+ [spoilers!!].

Conan quickly establishes his own tier list, with Aquaman beneath even the lowest of marine life, and Green Arrow somewhere near the camp-bowman middle. Wonder Woman is elevated to the upper tier with emasculating results; Lex Luthor proves dominant against the less cerebral talents of infamous Superman villain, Doomsday.

General Zod gets his fifteen minutes of national television exposure, with an adequate performance of all the basic moves. His much-talked about Super Move sees a hapless Batgirl driven through The Moon, before being laser eyed back to the Earth. Zod -- not quite the movie version, but not the comic book type either -- carries the familiar aloof characterization that has come to be trademark. His stance is noteably upright and non-combative; his aerial exploits end with a more upright conclusion than most flying characters.

All of this is well and good, but the real main event is obviously the arrival of The Flaming C. Created in a previous segment with the aid of DC Animation Head, Bruce Timm; Conan's superhero of choosing dominates Aquaman with a teflon fist (except for when he doesn't).

The Flaming C Super Move Close-Up Blatantly Stolen from MKOmmunity User Detox!

No word yet when The Flaming C will be available for purchase (as The Flaming DLC, if you will). General Zod joins the online store in July. Zod is the fourth (and presumed final) character in the Season Pass, following Lobo, Batgirl and Mortal Kombat's Scorpion. Characters can be purchased individually for $4.99 (400 MS Points), or 4-for-3 via the Season Pass. Discuss it all on the DC Universe Injustice forum.

Injustice DLC Coming to Wii U - Summer Target
Injustice: Gods Among Us Possibly Coming to Wii U This Summer!

The big news out of E3 is the confirmed release of 4th Injustice DLC character: General Zod [full story]. The Man of Steel villain is expected to be officially unveiled tonight on Conan (11/10c on TBS), after being playable on the E3 convention floor.

Zod completes the downloadable line-up of the [first] Injustice Season Pass, which to date has been available exclusively to PlayStation 3 & Xbox 360 owners. According to the official Injustice: Gods Among Us twitter account (@InjusticeGame); fans who own the Nintendo Wii U version may be on the verge of getting their downloadable due!

Update (7/8): All DLC is now available via the Nintendo Wii U store! Kneel before Zod and check out all the downloadable skins!

Lobo, Batgirl & Mortal Kombat's Scorpion make up the rest of the current downloadable character slate. More heroes from the DC Universe are speculated to join the Gods Among Us roster in a future announcement [full story].

DLC on the Wii U will not only mean access to more characters and a cavalcade of character costume packs [Blackest Night 1 & Red Son 2 out now] -- but also potential updates to fundamental game mechanics through the Compatability Pack system.

Mortal Kombat Online will be on the look out for more Wii U updates as they present. Before the Conan release; learn more about General Zod in our confirmation feature. Discuss all things DC Entertainment on the DC Universe Injustice forum!

Injustice DLC: E3 Kneels Before General Zod!
Gods Among Us will Kneel Before Zod! Man of Steel Villain Joins DLC at E3!

Rumors preceded any announcement by a significant margin, but a change in expected release order kept us guessing. Now, from the floor of E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo), confirmation comes of a playable General Zod as presumed fourth character in the [first] Injustice: Gods Among Us DLC Season Pass!

IGN editor Destin Legarie leaked reference to the playable villain: a live feature reveal for Injustice on the floor of the annual convention.

A previously announced television exclusive seems to have kept amateur photography to a minimum, but that hasn't stopped the flow of information completely. GameFAQs forum user ConradimusPrime shared unverified descriptions of a bald, goateed version of the militant Kyrptonian; goggled, and at least loosely inspired by the Adam Kubert design featured in Last Son -- a 2007 [Action Comics] story by DC Creative Chief Officer Geoff Johns and 1978 Superman film director Richard Donner.

Update: The Injustice Facebook teases the big reveal tonight on Conan! The show airs 11/10c on TBS; check local listings. Start speculating about The Flaming C guest DLC on the forums. Thanks to Ed Boon (@noobde) we now know Conan will be playing Injustice during his Clueless Gamer segment! [Watch it here; discuss it here!]

The Donner name remains synonymous with Superman's less well known arch-nemesis, who first appeared in Adventure Comics #283 (1961), in a form that would be revamped many times in the decades that followed.

While the inclusion of Zod can be recognized as a timely reference to the U.S. release of Man of Steel [June 14]; it's his appearance in troubled 1980 sequel - Superman II - that remains the most prominent cultural touchstone for many.

British star Terrence Stamp reprised the role he first took in a brief cameo during opening sequences in the 1978 original: Superman. The aloof, callous interpretation of a Kryptonian conquerer quickly became the definitive account -- famous for ordering the Man of Steel to kneel. Stamp's General would be the first physical threat to oppose a major motion picture Superman (Christopher Reeve), sharing all the powers associated with a Kryptonian biology under Earth's yellow sun. Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire, Revolutionary Road) assumes the powers in the 2013 film, directed by Zack Snyder.

General Zod is the aggressive arch-rival to Superman's scientist father - Jor-El. Sealed in the prison dimension of The Phantom Zone: Zod survives the destruction of the planet Krypton, only to bedevil Jor-El's son (Kal-El) on his adopted home of Earth. Zod can be briefly seen trapped in the Phantom Zone in a Injustice: Gods Among Us arena interaction.

In a game where Superman has been driven to become Earth's oppressor, will General Zod be made to kneel, or join The Regime in its conquest of Earth? Players will have the opportunity to find out when Zod joins Lobo, Batgirl & Mortal Kombat's Scorpion in the DLC Season Pass. Mortal Kombat Online will continue to follow promotion of General Zod DLC.

Scorpion is now officially available to all who desire him: $4.99 individually (400 MS Points). E3 is also where you'll see newly available DLC skins based on Blackest Night & Red Son. Learn more about the secret origins of Black Lantern Superman in a special Mortal Kombat Online feature [full story]. Discuss these items and more on the DC Universe Injustice forum!

Injustice DLC: Blackest Night & Red Son Skins E3 Preview
Blackest Night, Red Son & Scorpion DLC Coming During E3!

A raft of downloadable content options are coming to Injustice: Gods Among Us just in time for this year's E3 Electronic Entertainment Expo {June 10-13)! The third DLC character (Scorpion) - and two collections of alternate skins - will officially become available to the masses starting June 11!

The Injustice Facebook featured seven costumes in seven days as hype for the Blackest Night & Red Son 2 3-character costume packs! More info follows.

Comic book references dominate the E3 wave of DLC; Containment Suit Doomsday leading the charge in a free Compatability Pack update [full story]! The now classic costume comes right out of the villains' earliest appearances as a grunting monster whose rampage would culminate in the 1992 Death of Superman event.

DLC Season Pass holders can already download Mortal Kombat guest character Scorpion -- the third addition to the playable roster. He too received a comic book connection, visually reinvented for Injustice by DC Comics Publisher and New 52 lead designer: Jim Lee!

All fans will have to pay the $2.99 (240 MS Points) price tag to get their hands on Blackest Night and Red Son skins for six of the existing character sets. [Examine full size images by clicking the thumbnail gallery below.]

Like the pre-order Black Lantern Batman bonus [full story]; these new Black Lantern Corps skins technically introduce new characters to the Injustice roster!

As detailed in a Mortal Kombat Online feature; the Black Lantern Superman owes his origins to some of DC Comics' biggest milestones, with origins dating back to the original comics of the Golden Age! Black Lantern Flash borrows his design from the resurrected visage of an arch-nemesis: Eobard Thawne - The Reverse Flash! The "Black Flash" played off a tradition of death-bringing speedsters and gave Barry Allen some troubles during the three-part Blackest Night: Flash mini-series! Doomsday rounds out the set with a dark look inspired by the style of the 2009 best selling event.

Batman & Green Lantern round out the Soviet inspired designs of 2003 Eisner Award winning story: Superman: Red Son. This is the second skin pack inspired by the story, which tells of a world where Superman landed as a baby in 1950s Soviet Russia -- dramatically altering human history in the process! A Red Son design for Deathstroke is also included.

Injustice Creative Director Ed Boon showed signs of interest in the Red Son universe as far back as 2008! During promotion for Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe, he told Mortal Kombat Online about the difficulties associated with bringing these concepts to the fighting game arena [archive], "I guess what you need to keep in mind is that every version of the characters that we show, we need approval for them. And so it's pretty time consuming. So the process of kind of doubling that up by saying "Okay, let's do alternate Superman. Let's do that Russian one... that's quite a bit of turnaround time."

Red Son is the creation of writer and Superman super-fan Mark Millar and artist Dave Johnson. The concept has continued to be a landmark reference, utilized by DC Comics as part of their multiverse of parallel Elseworlds. The Red Son Superman has featured in comic events like Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis and shares ties to the Golden Age version [read more].

Injustice DLC: The Secret Origin of Black Lantern Superman!
The Secret Origins of the Black Lantern Superman! DLC Coming June 11!

Black Lantern Superman is one of the many alternate costumes coming to downloadable content for Injustice: Gods Among Us in June!

The decayed variant takes inspiration from Blackest Night -- a 2009 DC Comics event that brought characters back from the grave as zombie agents of death: The Black Lantern Corps!

If members of the Corps had to be of the deceased variety -- you may be wondering what Superman's doing running around with dirty black duds and a lust for human hearts. The answer is more unusual than you might think -- and it's got nothing to do with 1992's iconic Death of Superman event! In fact, the DLC technically introduces a new character to the Injustice roster, but for the full story we'll have to whip through a few decades of superhero adventure! Warning: If sprawling sagas of life, death and multiple universes are too much for you, you may wish to go do something boring!

The Blackest Night DLC skin pack hits online stores June 11!

It should be noted that Blackest Night featured as part of Injustice pre-order exclusives; offering a generic zombie mode and Black Lantern Batman skin. As previously detailed; the resurrected Dark Knight was another technical new inclusion, based on the machinations of Darkseid and a little human cloning [read more]. In the wonderful case of Black Lantern Superman, we have to go all the way back to the beginning of the DC Universe!

In June 1938, the first appearance of Superman (in Action Comics #1) changed the course of American comic books forever! The success of the superhero archetype brought about more creations, which eventually saw Superman joined by a veritable universe of colourful superheroes! Sponsored by the conflicts of World War II, a Justice Society of America spawned iconic heroes like; Flash, Green Lantern, The Sandman, The Spectre, Dr. Fate, Hawkman, Hourman Wonder Woman and more.

After a period of dormancy for the superhero genre in the post-war decade; DC Comics relaunched their classic properties under modern guises, starting with Flash (Barry Allen) in 1956, and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) in 1959. The introduction of this new generation supplanted their largely unrelated predecessors (Jay Garrick and Alan Scott) and created the divide of a Golden Age and Silver Age of DC Comics.

Given his massive success in multiple media types; Superman had never quite fallen under the collapse of the turnover of interests, or the rise of successful competing counterparts [eg; Captain Marvel]. The complications of this ever growing shared universe and refinements to characters meant increasing complications in the plot and sequence of events. With the JSA deposed in favour of a new era, it was determined the classics would continue on in their own timeline on the parallel Earth-Two -- complete with their own Golden Age Superman!

Supermen of two Earths battle on the cover of Justice League of America #74 (1969)!To further distinguish this alternate Superman from his continuing modern counterpart; the Earth-2 variety was rechristened "Kal-L" (as in early stories) and given a stylized S symbol on a more matured character.

The adventures of the Golden Age heroes continued with regular crossover meetings with their Earth-1 juniors. Come 1985; the initative of DC editorial was to streamline their catalogue of multiple Earths, removing them with a radical 12-part maxi-series called Crisis on Infinite Earths!

Written by Marv Wolfman and drawn by George Perez; Crisis would be one of the first major event series in comics history. It brought together thousands of versions of DC heroes and villains, gathered to confront the interdimensional menace of The Anti-Monitor -- a corrupt cosmic entity intent on ruling the Multiverse with the power he gained from destroying universes!

Both Supermen combined their powers as part of a special league gathered to battle the Anti-Montior. With Earth-2 erased, Kal-L would ultimately choose to fight alone against the interdimensional despot -- sacrificing himself to allow the other heroes to escape to the reborn DC Universe [a convenience of future publishing plans].

Earth-2 Superman would strike the final blow against the Anti-Monitor, accompanied by the Superboy of doomed Earth-Prime, and a cosmically powered hero named Alexander Luthor Jr. It seemed as if the final send-off to the first Superman would result in the extinction of this trio of heroes, but Luthor's powers over the dimensions would play out in the revelatory twist of 2006's Infinite Crisis!

Earth-2 Superman returns in Infinite Crisis!

In the twenty years between the two Crisis events; the DC Universe had been rebooted as a sequential, modern universe. Stories like Batman Year One reframed the origins of the heroes in a modern age, realigning the timeline to accomodate a consistent run from the Golden Age to present day.

In this new universe, only one modern Superman was needed. Infinite Crisis challenged that on the twentieth anniversary of the streamlining, when writer Geoff Johns introduced the survival of Earth-2 Superman and his fellows. They returned to the modern DCU to challenge its increasingly dark tone, having witnessed the new reality unfold from a pocket "paradise" universe created by Alexander Luthor Jr.

While Luthor Jr used the remains of the Anti-Monitor's technology to attempt to tune the universes back to something more palatable; Superboy-Prime would rise to become one of the deadliest new villains of the 2000s! Immune to kryptonite because of his Earth-Prime origins, and intent on bringing back the tropes of the Silver Age, he waged a bloody one-man war against all who opposed him! Caught somewhere in the middle, Earth-2 Superman (Kal-L) would once again join his modern counterpart, battling to stop his crazed ally!

The two Supermen would attack by flying Superboy-Prime to the poisoned remains of Krypton, where that planets red sun could strip them all of their powers. Superboy-Prime woud finally be subdued, but the toll of the fight would catch-up with Kal-L, who died of his injuries.

It was a touching conclusion for the first Superman, but of course, when Blackest Night saw the resurrection of dead heroes as emotive weapons against the living -- the Earth-2 Superman would return once again!

Black Lantern Superman causes trouble during Blackest Night!

In spin-off mini-series -- Blackest Night: Superman and Blackest Night: JSA -- the Black Lantern Superman would bedevil the likes of Superman, Superboy & Powergirl! Like all Black Lanterns, his mission was to destroy life by evoking the emotions that make us easy targets!

The Black Lantern Corps were the agents of event big-bad Nekron: entity of death who even ensnared the Anti-Monitor in his plot to destroy life! He was ultimately undone by the combined powers of the emotional spectrum and the emergence of a White Lantern entity of life! It's all a bit cosmic, but it made for one of the great DC epics of the last quarter century!

It should be said, heroes who'd been touched by death were briefly transformed by Black Lantern rings. Superman was among them, but had a more subdued version of his classic costume. The Black Lantern Superman skin being offered through Injustice: Gods Among Us is very specifically the Kal-L variety, evident in the short sleeves, wrist gauntlets, and five-fingered cape.

Blackest Night and Red Son costume packs offer three alternate skins for $2.99 (240 MS Points) and go on sale June 11! You can already preview the Black Lantern Superman skin as he battles Scorpion in the Mortal Kombat guests gameplay reveal trailer! Injustice DLC: The History of Scorpion Featurette
Jim Lee & Ed Boon Discuss Scorpion - the History & Injustice Arrival!

The ninja spectre Scorpion has made the leap from Mortal Kombat to Injustice: Gods Among Us [trailer]! To promote the release of the new downloadable character; DC Comics Publisher Jim Lee and NetherRealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon discuss the secret origin of one of gaming's most iconic warriors!

Boon alludes the comic book influences that helped shape Mortal Kombat in its infancy, and the history the series has had with comics. Along with collectible issues released alongside Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II; MK quickly featured in a range of licensed mini-series released by now defunct publisher: Malibu Comics!

Artist turned publisher Jim Lee comments on the suitability of the primary coloured ninja in the DC Universe. He designed the specially featured look of Injustice Scorpion, inspired by some of the most literal references in the characters' design history. The scorpion motif has become increasingly evident since NetherRealm designers (then-Midway) incorporated it into designs in Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe [read more].

Scorpion remains the doggedly determined ninja from Hell, whose lust for vengeance spurs him to pursue his enemies beyond death! Injustice DLC: Fourth DLC Character Playable at E3
4th Injustice DLC Character Revealed Next Week -- More DLC Teased!

Johnny Cage d. MokapThe fourth and final character in the Injustice DLC Season Pass will be revealed next week -- but the E3 festivities may not be an end for DLC additions!

Creative Director Ed Boon took to twitter (@noobde) to confirm the upcoming reveal of the mystery fourth character, who will feature in an official announcement on an unspecified TV show. Injustice: Gods Among Us will be present at E3 2013 (Electronic Entertainment Expo), which takes place June 11 - June 13 in Los Angeles.

The micro-blogging quotes can be interpreted as the first acknowledgment of more downloadable characters to come, but actually only specify that remaining Season Pass character(s) are based on popular fan requests. That much certainly gels with the post-credits appearance of Martian Manhunter in the recent reveal trailer for DLC character #3 - Scorpion. He stops short of confirming any future plans, however. Widespread rumors previously pegged General Zod -- of the upcoming Man of Steel film -- to be among the four Season Pass characters.

Boon's tweets come as fans offer mixed reactions to the inclusion of a Mortal Kombat guest character in the DC Comics fighter. Particularly vocal fans took the official Injustice Facebook to voice displeasure, demanding a fifth Season Pass character to balance the unannounced guest.

In teasing the possibility of more characters; Boon made glancing reference to a similar controversy that erupted around Mortal Kombat (2011) guest download - Freddy Krueger. He refers to the character as "the best selling" of the four, who were later included as part of the Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition (2012).

Injustice: Gods Among Us DLC is available now via PlayStation Network & Xbox LIVE. Lobo, Batgirl & Scorpion are the first three DLC characters in the Season Pass; available individually for $4.99 each (400 MS Points). A wide range of alternate costumes are also available.

Injustice: The MKOmmunity Reacts to Scorpion DLC
Fans React to Scorpion DLC in Injustice: Gods Among Us!

Scorpion has made the leap from the koliseum of Mortal Kombat to the superhero universe of Injustice: Gods Among Us! As the latest downloadable character; the iconic yellow ninja represents the franchise the Injustice game makers are best known for, bringing the silhouette featured in their company logo to life in-game.

As with any guest appearance in an established franchise, there will be a variety of reactions. Mortal Kombat fans experienced the gamut of emotions when Kratos and Freddy Krueger made their submission into the 2011 reboot title. The less said about that, the better.

Where Freddy proved to be a particularly obtuse and unexpected inclusion; Scorpion has the benefit of having been there and done that before in Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe. Smoothing things over from the other side is a brand new design by comic book icon and current DC Co-Publisher: Jim Lee!

Despite best efforts to distinguish the new franchise from their well known classic, we kinda expected some kind of nod to Mortal Kombat somewhere in the game. Whether it's a testament to the decision, the ease of expectations, or the success of its execution, plenty of people are embracing the ninjas crossover leap. Here are just some of the positive responses members of The MKOmmunity have had to share:

THE GOOD:
"I wasn't excited for scorpion at all until I saw him costume and then I was like dude that's awesome. Now I'm actually hype to play as him even though he shouldn't be in this game." - Heavy-Rain

"The outfit is awesome, I'd like Jim Lee's designs on other characters. Maybe he can help with better costumes for MK 10." - Venkman28

"Honestly, this is easily one of my favorite Scorpion costumes of all [...] time. I really hope he gets it as an additional costume for MK10. I like that his super is very Kratos-esque. Obviously his encounter with Kratos in MK9 made him realize that he needed more emphasis on his chains. I like that they made him more spectre like as well. His throw, clash animation, and super really highlight his spectre side. I'm very excited to play as Scorpion in Injustice." - KungLaodoesntsuck

"I love how they had Jim Lee design Scorpion for this game. While it's not a design I would like to see in an MK game, it works for this... I do prefer it in the sketch tho." - JAX007

"Backflip kick is back + air throw + air teleport. Scorpion is officially the best anti-air player in the game now or at least gives Doomsday and Wonder Woman a run for their money." - Dasher10

"Never was a fan of Scorpion but the costume is pretty cool, the intro and outro are good, and the super is interesting. - TheNinjasRock071394

"I love what I'm seeing, and that Jim Lee design is great." - Vash_15

"I wasn't a fan of the idea of Scorpion being in Injustice, but seeing his Jim Lee [d]esign totally made me change my mind. I love the way he looks, and I can't wait to try him out." - Siroj

"Scorpion looks awesome!! I hope Jim Lee helps design some of the MK10 fighters who need updates (*cough* Nightwolf)." - warrior

"Ya know, I'm actually proud of NRS [for] how they executed this. I mean, I knew that Scorpion would make his way in this game some way the other. But it actually wasn't a half-assed, lazy MK9 port. They actually gave him a new costume, intro and wager animation. Good job to you all, Jim Lee and NRS. You did not disappoint." - S0nofKrypton

"They translated him really well in this game, his moves, personality, and design. I really like his wager clash, and I'm glad they made his disable require a bar of the super meter. Overall, he fits well into this game." - fijikungfu

"I LOVED that line "There is no justice!". Very clever, because we know what Scorp has been through with his and his family murders." - Noobsmoke92

"The most interesting bit of all of this is going to be seeing how well an mk fighter makes the transition to [I]njustice. Going by that video, it seems like its going to be a success, and like him or not, he looks to be a viable member of the roster. He is an anti air beast. His super is cooler than everyone is giving it credit for. He takes them to hell and ragdolls the [...] out of them! I can't wait to take him for a spin." - Detox

"I like this costume a lot more than his MK9 primary, but less than his MK9 alternate. I'm happy that they redesigned him rather than recycle him from MK9 (one thing I love about Mortal Kombat is that the characters get new designs in each game). Even if it's not the best Scorpion costume, it's still better than recycling it imo. It keeps it fresh. I agree the spikes on his wrists are a little too over the top. I don't really mind those sword things though. The thing is, I didn't get Injustice. But I definitely want to get the complete edition when it comes out now. But this really makes me hope another Mortal Kombat will be announced soon." - johnny1up

"The costume is awesome, with the minor exception of spikes on his costume. It reminds me of the way the ninja hood looked like in his MK1 sprite, that's just sweet. That's how it should be if they want him to look like a ninja." - legoslayer10

Of course, while many may find enjoyment in the variety of a crossover guest character, not everyone is so easily convinced.

As a third draft DLC inclusion, Scorpion skips ahead of some of the most iconic heroes and villains of the DC Universe. One could argue that those options should have had maximum priority in a DC product - particularly some of the most shocking omissions [e.g. Martian Manhunter -- teased at the end of the Scorpion trailer]. The existence of lesser guest characters may have soured the broth for the better picks, but is it so wrong for consumers and fans to expect a franchise to be what it claims to be and nothing else?

Scorpion's arrival as a previously unannounced Season Pass character - or even as $4.99 extra - raises questions about consumer satisfaction, the gaming experience, and the exploitation of DLC. In some ways, it may be disappointing Scorpion wasn't included as a deeply embedded secret in the disc game itself. For others, no amount of reasoning will do. Here are some of the negative reactions from The MKOmmunity:

THE BAD:
"What I don't like is that his spear is shaped like a scorpion tail. No. Yeah, his name is "Scorpion", but that doesn't mean he should be decked out in a giant yellow scorpion carcus. Just make him a yellow "ninja"." - legoslayer10

"I only liked his super. Seeing pretty much all of his MK9 moves copy-pasted into this game feels lame. Not impressed. I just expected something "fresh" and different for Injustice, not almost a literal copy/paste from MK (moves, that is). Although, this is not surprising considering how much it helped them time-wise." - Nephrite

"As for his design... I'm kinda indifferent. I like the loose hood, but I hate the obnoxious spikes on the gauntlets. I like the golden armor, but I hate the lines and loose cloth on his legs. I like that he looks very MK-ish, but I hate that he's in the game at all." - TemperaryUserName

"I find it funny that I was really excited for Scorpion, and then they get him re-designed by Jim Lee who I hate and he makes Scorpion look like a [...] dork. Worst design in Injustice, bar none. Yeah, his name is Scorpion, so let's cover his whole chest with a bulky yellow scorpion. So bad." - Mobster_For_SATAN

"Im very glad they re-designed him and not just by the NRS team but by JIM LEE :D I still feel however he doesn't belong, and his moves aren't very new or interesting to me...but I got the season pass so im stuck with him. He does look very cool tho." - Wintergoose

"I think Scorpion's super could have been better. Rather than raising some pillars at the start of the super, he should have summoned a bunch of other Scorpions like his UMK3 fatality and just beat the crap out of his opponent. I'm kind of disappointed he made the roster, but I'm glad they redesigned him. His move set looks almost identical to MK9 save for his throw. His Clash is pretty cool too. " - Kabal20

"I don't wanna see this design in MK 10 but it works well for the comic book universe." - colt1107

"Same sh*t as MK9, fire animation still sucks, the design is meh." - GodlyShinnok

"I really hate people in twitter saying: "wow Scoprpion gameplay looks amazing" ... come one thats a simple copy an paste from MK9...the only thing we can say its awesome is his design... but gameplay, combos, specials ""get over here" everything is copy and paste from MK... thats lame..!!!" - hayder_online

"Lame Super Move. My overall feeling about this is meh." - MrSchmuckHead

"Well I do like his design, but the moves do look a little too similar to similar to MK9." - Darkhound74

"I only had one problem with Freddy, and it's the same problem I have with Scorpion. No Jason, No Sub-Zero. I've been a Friday the 13th fan for over 20 years now. When I saw Freddy was in MK9 my heart skipped a beat. I figured "if Freddy is in, Jason has to be, right?" Wrong! i feel like that has happened again with Scorpion. [...] It's not that Scorpion can't stand solid ground in Injustice, he just needs some company." - evilekim

"... I hate all these Scorpion themed costumes they keep coming up with for him. What happened to the good old days when they felt the need to establish he was undead with his design instead being so god damn literal with his name!" - Onaga

"Love the hood mask combo, but hate his overall outfit in general. The shit on his chest and below is a big yellow eye sore. His Super is great. His victory animation is wicked. The moves, I'm not mad that he has the same moves plus a few new ones, it was to be expected really. I don't like that a MK character is in the game, but I'm kinda glad he's in, just to combat against the Sinestro spammers." - WeaponTheory

"Only his hood and mask are good (remind me about his awesome design from MKD). Otherwise it's superhero costume, not warrior's. While fitting for this particular game, I hope his design in the next MK will have nothing to do with such style." - RedSumac

"The only thing that makes me twist my head is the diamond thing in the center of his chest. I mean I get that he "needed" something like that to fit in with the DC superheroes, but a diamond? I dig the rest of the costume." - DjangoDrag

Injustice DLC: Mortal Kombats Scorpion Gameplay Trailer
Go To Hell, Superman!

A whirlwind of speculation combusts into hellfire as DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Jim Lee and NetherRealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon combine to present the latest downloadable addition to Injustice: Gods Among Us! Mortal Kombat's Scorpion has made the leap and is kicking butt in a new feature trailer!

Update (June 4): Scorpion is now available to DLC Season Pass holders. Everyone else can purchase starting June 11. [via @noobde]

Scorpion gets a fresh look courtesy of the DC Co-Publisher [Lee], who is better known to millions of fans as a comic book penciler on titles like Batman, Justice League & X-Men. The new design takes inspiration from the iconic ninja look of the games, embellishing it with a fantastical flourish befitting a cross-dimensional adventure.

The crossover is destined to spark debate wtihin the fanbase, but draws precedent from NetherRealm Studios' previous work in the 2008 crossover: Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe. To sweeten the deal for DC diehards; the trailer features a new Blackest Night Superman skin, as well as a suggestive post-credits appearance by JLA Watchtower background cameo, Martian Manhunter. A surprising omission from the outset, it's fair to say the Martian is a likely prospect for DLC.

Previous experiences with the DCU don't appear to have better prepared Scorpion for his guest role. Sub-Zero makes a cameo appearance in the ninja spectre's fight intro -- a sequence that sees Scorpion unexpectedly plucked from the Koliseum stage of the last Mortal Kombat game (2011)! Don't expect to see Sub-Zero in DLC any time soon, though. Boon tweets "... One is enough. Like Freddy Krueger in [MK]..."

The MK fan service doesn't end with soft explanations. Scorpion is given the full treatment in-game, adapting everything you'd expect into the Injustice formula. Super-moves send the fight to Hell with cinematic results, complete with Scorpion's trademark spear attack, and penchant for shouting. Ed Boon continues his prolific run as the Guinness World Record holding voice of the vengeful spirit.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is out now. Scorpion will join Lobo, Batgirl and a range of costume packs available for download via PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE. Characters are $4.99 (400MS Points) each, with a 4-for-3 discount attached to Season Pass characters.
