Developer Teases Mortal Kombat XL PC Release
Ed Boon teases long awaited PC release for Mortal Kombat XL!

NetherRealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon said "we hear ya!" when fans showed overwhelming support for Mortal Kombat XL for PC. The global prayers of PC gamers look to soon be answered, Boon teasing the long awaited update:

In case you missed it, capitalized letters in the message "Maybe we should Karry eXtra Long People who Care?" are a none too subtle hint at "MKXL PC".

Boon's been promising big Mortal Kombat XL news since last month. Polls asking fans about their most missed male and female kombatants leading some to presume new downloadable content for the kompleted saga.

MK Online has speculated about the possibility of bonus content in the PC release. Coming a year after the original troubled MKX port was effectively abandoned, and several months after MKXL and Kombat Pack 2, a few extras could provide a much needed peace offering to frustrated fans. NetherRealm Studios have not explicitly alluded to or promised exclusive content at this time.

Gamescom: 17 Minutes of Gameplay - Harley, Blue Beetle
Harley Quinn mixes & matches looks in Injustice sequel gameplay!

The heroes and villains of Injustice 2 are deep in the heart of Germany, where Warner Brothers and NetherRealm Studios are in attendance for Gamescom! So are the fine folks at IGN, who've shared an uninterrupted 17 minutes of gameplay you can watch right now:

Gamescom kicked off with the unveiling of Harley Quinn and Deadshot - two of the "worst heroes ever" from Suicide Squad.

Only the former was on full display in gameplay demos, returning from 2013's Injustice: Gods Among Us with a revamped move set replete with all new tricks and gimmicks! Harley's positively batty with a range of bludgeoning, dynamite special moves, including the new ability to summong pet hyenas.

Fans of different eras of Harley Quinn and other characters can also look forward to mixing and matching different attire through the Injustice 2 armor system. Quinn can be seen with variations of her t-shirt and shorts, two-tone harlequin pants and suit, and classic jester hat in a variety of combinations! Fans will also be pleased to note graphical improvements in the rendering of the face.

Gamescom gameplay also shows off July's Comic-Con additions: Blue Beetle and Wonder Woman! The Jamie Reyes incarnation of the hero brings an alien arsenal of moves, while Wonder Woman commands with sword and shield against DCU prime-villain Gorilla Grodd!

Injustice Teaser Hints at Gamescom Character Reveals
Grinning Hyena Teases 2 Characters for Gamescom - Tomorrow!

The unending twirl of the promotional calendar determines it's already Gamescom time! Warner Brothers will be in Germany with bells on, and two new characters to reveal in their DC Comics superhero fighting sequel: Injustice 2! The reveal will come tomorrow - and a teaser gives us a pretty good idea of who might be involved:

While DC Comics may be replete with animalist heroes and villains, we're going to rule out classic Firestorm villain Hyena, and reduce animal powered heroes Vixen and Beast Boy to outside chances for future pondering. No, this particular grinning pet has all the hallmarks of DC's laughing sweethearts: Harley Quinn & The Joker!

The timing certainly makes a lot of sense. Both characters have just made a splash at the box office, appearing in Warner Brothers' latest DC Comics live-action blockbuster: Suicide Squad.

DC Publisher Jim Lee is recently quoted as describing Harley Quinn as the "fourth pillar" of the DC Universe. We saw her iconic mallet in July, included with iconography on a promotional Injustice 2 t-shirt. She's a safe bet, but will Mr.J be in on the joke with her?

The deadly duo already got in on the movie tie-in act, jumping from big screen to small with content and challenges in Injustice Mobile [watch]. The Injustice Mobile skins feature likenesses based on actors Margot Robbie and Jared Leto. Marksman with a heart of gold Deadshot also joined the game.

Injustice 2 is growing an eclectic cast of icons found in a variety of DC and Warner Brother's multi-media projects! Supergirl is said to have special significance in the game, joining new additions Blue Beetle, Gorilla Grodd and Atrocitus.

Boon Polls More Injustice 2 Characters - Red Hoods, More
Injustice 2 Creative Director asks fans for more preferences!

Injustice 2 already has exciting new additions like Supergirl, Blue Beetle, Gorilla Grodd and Atrocitus, but there's still plenty of room to be filled in the 2017 roster!

Uncle Ed [Boon] ended another week tapping at his phone to ask fans their preferences for a variety of characters. The first of two Twitter polls asked which incarnation of the Red Hood fans would rather see. With 81% of 15,868 votes registered; sidekick gone rogue Jason Todd was far and away the preferred choice. He dominated the original crimson dome and tails of The Joker's ill fated first persona.

From 1983 to '89, Jason Todd served as the second young hero to be Batman's sidekick Robin. He famously stole the tyres off the Batmobile and showed aggressive tendencies toward arch-nemesis Two-Face, and others. He was eventually beaten to death with a crowbar by The Joker in A Death In The Family: a story with a fatal outcome decided by telephone vote. He returned ambiguously in 2003, before adopting the Red Hood persona inspired by his killer throughout 2005.

In a second poll, it was a fresh batch of miscellaneous heroes and villains. Teen Titan Starfire edged her way to victory with 43% of 12,874 votes. She edged out chain smoking, trenchcoated occultist John Constantine (32%) and armored acquatic villain Black Manta, who secured a quarter (25%) of the votes. We've already seen Manta lurking the waters of Atlantis in stage transitions, possibly affecting enthusiasm in the vote.

Wan Comments On Mortal Kombat Movie Development
Producer wants Mortal Kombat movie people like.

Press day at the Television Critics Association has given us the first word on the Mortal Kombat movie reboot from high profile producer James Wan!

Speaking to IGN, the Furious 7 and upcoming Aquaman director emphasized his appreciation for the original games and movies, citing the need to "do it right" as the reason production will continue to 'cook away' and take its time.

"The key here is to try and do it right. I don't want to rush into it. So right now, we're just trying to take our time to make sure it's heading in the right direction. I think that's more important than trying to rush through it and pump up something that no one likes."

It's been one year since news of Wan's attachment to the long awaited project originally broke [full story]. It was the first substantial update to the film since 2013, when Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen announced his departure. No new director has replaced him, but James Wan is providing a guiding hand to the Mortal Kombat movie reboot. He explained his appreciation for the core concept:

"I love the characters. I think they're such colorful characters. It's such an amazing take on, basically, Enter the Dragon. It's that fantasy version, the video game version, of Enter the Dragon. And in doing so, they ended up creating such interesting characters and I think that is such a cool world to explore. This really mythical, bigger world that lives on another dimension on top of ours. I think that's really fun to play with and so we'll see."

Star of the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie, Christophe Lambert, recently sparked rumors about the new movie's plot, claiming to have been in talks to reprise his role as Thunder God: Raiden.

Wan may have reason to be thinking carefully about franchise properties rushed into theatres with negative reaction from critics and fans. The Australian is currently penciled in to direct a 2018 Aquaman feature film in follow-up to next year's Justice League ensemble. The DC Comics movie universe expanded to critical derision this month, opening theatrically with Suicide Squad. It's the third film to draw strong controversy, suffering from steep box office drops after initially strong opening.

Deviating interpretations of the classic Mortal Kombat canon proved controversial in Kevin Tancharoen's live-action webseries work. Mortal Kombat: Legacy II maintained strong viewership, but less enthusiasm. Earlier this year, Machinima removed the series from YouTube. A third series, announced as part of Warner Brothers' digital line-up in 2014, has suffered continuing delays since reports of an early 2016 release.

Warner Brothers is notably in search of a strong theatrical franchise. With over five million units of Mortal Kombat X sold in 2015, the potential for repeating or exceeding the multimedia universe created by Threshold Entertainment is tantalizing.

Ed Boon Asks Fans To Choose Preferred MKX News
Could a PC Release for Mortal Kombat XL be on the Horizon?

Since discovering the poll feature on Twitter, NetherRealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon has taken to asking everything from movie preferences to most desired game content. He returned to the hot button topic of Mortal Kombat X this week, asking fans which news they'd most like to see:

In a poll of three options; 10,160 fans came down in favour of a GGPO supported Mortal Kombat XL update for PC. The 48% interested in PC gaming were closely followed by 41%, whose preference would be a new game-wide patch to balance or "buff" gameplay of preferred characters. Around 1117 fans chose a fourth season of the competitive Electronic Sports League at a distant 11%.

The update options notably omit any release of more downloadable characters for the game, which released disc copies of a "komplete" Mortal Kombat XL edition in March.

With MKXL for PC now on the table, speculation is wide open to new character additions through a late port release. The practice has been frequent throughout Mortal Kombat history, with Mortal Kombat Gold notably introducing klassic characters to the Sega Dreamcast version of Mortal Kombat 4. Delayed Nintendo releases saw character exclusives as recently as Deception (Goro and Shao Kahn) and Armageddon (Khameleon). This could theoretically explain previous polls asking fans about their favourite omitted male and female characters.

The 2015 PC release of Mortal Kombat X was plagued with issues on launch -- one of two Warner Brothers third-party ports released with devastating results. Attempts to fix problems were short lived, eventually leaving Mortal Kombat X short on updates, and struggling with unresolved reports of functional flaws. The first Kombat Pack was released to the PC before support was officially abandoned.

New content would be a developer mea culpa welcomed by PC fans, who've been understandably frustrated with the state of their purchase. The addition of the GGPO rollback method used to enhance online play for consoles would also go lengths to extending the life of the fighter.
