Well, because they did hire an outside writer to write the narrative for this game, so I think it was reasonable of me to think that they actually started paying attention.

Well, as long as Quan Chi has his kick ass voice and skills of necromancy, it's all good with me.

I mean, they spent the extra money to get this guy to give them some decent writing.
And believe me, I'm far from a dreamer. I've given up on video game series' before because the storylines went to crap.
Of course, I don't play MK for the storyline, but still, it would be nice. I mean, I USED TO.

"Used to," as in before Tobias left? Is it just me or does he come off as a lot less idiotic in interviews than either Boon or Vogel?

Hey, I've dealt with some people who were all bitter because Tobias left, talking about him like he was a traitor or something.
I always missed Tobias, and thought that the franchise was more 'complete' with him on the team.
And even back in the day, when I was watching the making of MK3, or the making of Mortal Kombat Mythologies, yes, to be honest... Tobias felt like more of a creative and elaborate brain among the two.

So many things for ol' Jack Burton to comment on, so little time!

Allow me to get straight to the point...

Nathan's "time paradox" idea sounds interesting. It comes straight out of "Back to the Future," so you have to imagine DOCBROWN on MKO is psyched about it.

smile

The Quan Chi issue (over his costumes) is somewhat intriguing. I can see why there would be debate over the tattoos, as they weren't around until MKDA, after MK4 happened. I, personally, think he got them after MK4, when he was imprisoned in the Netherrealm again. I think the MKDA storyline would support my claim that he picked them up shortly before he escaped. He needed the info he tattooed in order to know how to use the amulet to escape, right? I think that's how it went down... But, yeah, I see the reason for the uproar...yet he did appear with the tattoos in MKSM as well...I know that isn't technically canon either, but I think it will all be explained.

As for the graphical look of the picture...I agree it doesn't look extremely spectacular. I have no idea what the piles of...whatever...are. Could be rubble. From the position of Quan Chi's arms (yeah, they look strange), I would say that he is supposed to be bound in some way, like by chains, but the thing is there aren't any...he comes out and says "I won't be bound here for long," so it would be logical for him to be chained up somehow. But bound could also mean unable to exit the realm, so hey, could be either.

It is troubling to try and decipher the storyline when you have so many games and inconsistancies to work with. Even a seasoned MK veteran such as myself admits he's only going by his own interpretation of things, so what I've set forth is certainly open to speculate, and I won't readily object if you decide to call me on something. As much as I've liked the storyline of the games thus far, I do admit things could have been polished here and there. I can clearly tell some of you care deeply about how the story is played out in the games, so if you end up on the MK team someday, I hope you still have that drive to get the story straight. wink

And THAT'S what Jack Burton has to say at this time.

Looks like some pieces of architecture... But even then, it doesn't mean that it's the final version of what we'll see in the game.

The crap on the floor has some pretty bad texture. I'm glad Quan Chi isn't abusing steroids and putting on massive unnecessary armor plates. Also, I like how Scorpion is just standing there like he is just talking with Quan Chi while Sub-Zero has a fight stance going on... like he's had enough and he's ready to kick Quan Chi's ass. The screenshot doesn't "whoa!" me, but I hope it looks much better in game when everything is actually in motion.

How about the characters? You don't actually have to follow the storyline to enjoy playing as Scorpion or Sub-Zero, and beating the crap out of someone.

If you think Tobias sucked ass, you can't think much of Boon then, because the storyline in MK has been going downhill since Tobias left.

You can't tell me that you thought the storyline for Deception was good? Shujinko was by far the worst MK character ever created, and this includes his backstory. Armageddon storyline was better than Deception, but that's really not saying much.

Deadly Alliance had a good storyline, but there's just way too many similarities with a couple of episodes of the Mortal Kombat Conquest series, so it's not as if Boon and his creative team created from scratch, the idea of Quan Chi and Shang Tsung becoming allies, or that Quan Chi wanted to collect souls for undead warriors. All from Conquest.

Jack Burton liked the concept behind (and the effort taken to create) MKD's konquest mode, but didn't have much sympathy for Shujinko.

The three most recent characters created by the MK franchise have been a little disappointing in my opinion...I'm talking Shujinko, Taven, and Daegon. I can applaud the effort in the storylines somewhat, but the look and feel of these characters...it's making me think MK is running out of ideas. Taven and Daegon especially felt generic to me. Shujinko...I really don't mind...but due to the fact he had mantis style, etc., he felt like Kung Lao from MKDA somewhat. Granted, I know the backstory to his character is that he always played as Kung Lao when playing "Mortal Kombat" with his friends, but still...I'd have rather had Kung Lao in MKD, ya know? It's just one of those things.

I recall Ed Boon saying in the trading card videos for MKD that Shujinko was sort of meant to be the "next-gen Liu Kang," but I think he fell tremendously short of that.

And THAT'S what Jack Burton has to say at this time.

The idea behind it was good, but it wasn't very well executed. Not very well written. The fact that Shujinko was being manipulated was a little too obvious. Because of this, Shujinko ended up being portrayed like a complete tool, which made him very unappealing.
And the fact that he was given Spear, Freeze AND Bicycle Kick, made Shujinko seem like Create-A-Character made by a complete noob. Which is fair, considering he was probably Boon's idea, haha.

Frankly, I liked Taven better than Shujinko. I find that Taven's personality was actually pretty cool, he had his funny sarcastic moments, which made me like him. Even if his design was a tad boring.
Daegon, I thought, looked cool. One of my favorite new character designs.

Jack Burton thought the idea behind Taven and Daegon was alright...

Two brothers in a contest, each the "different side of a coin" so-to-speak, each would usher in different fates for the rest of the MK universe...that was intriguing. I actually thought they both had fairly good moves, Taven especially. I just sort of felt that, in terms of appearance I guess, they were sort of generic when compared to other characters. Granted, they were completely new characters, so that could very well be interpreted as me favoring the older MK characters, but I simply felt they didn't really fit the "traditional MK look," shall we say...I wish I could come up with better words to express what I'm trying to say about them, but hopefully you can at least begin to follow my train of thought on this.

And THAT'S what Jack Burton has to say at this time.

I thought Taven did look generic, but I actually really liked Daegon's look. His face is all scarred up, his armor was pretty cool...
I guess I'm just a sucker for the combination of red and yellow, I think those colors combine really well. But overall, I wouldn't say he's the best of the new characters, but he's definitely above characters like Kobra, Drahmin, Nitara, or even Kenshi. In my book.

To me honestly, this looks like a screen shot from Armageddons Konquest mode...
The Sub-Zero model looks just..well unimpressive and Scorpion looks like he is floating,
and the bckground....it just does not look next gen at all to me. It looks like they are not even using the Unreal Engine and are still using the engine they used for the last gen games.
You would expect that they would try and make all of this game shine with the Unreal 3 Engine.
