I thought I would create a thread that would inspire to help the MK team to come up with a more diverse and original cast of characters and arenas, by posting pictures (or links) and information respectively.
The pictures I will display will range from hair styles to props in an arena.
(click on the images for a larger one)
A woodblock print of 2 of the famous 47 ronin (samurai). What I wanted to show off here is one of them is carrying a Otsuchi or large hammer, which had a shaft of about 6 feet. It was maiinly used for forcible entry through castle gates and doors. Imagine if a new character that was really built in MK used this weapon to smash the hell outta someone. This would make a killer weapon as it looks so badass!
Some pictures of a yamabushi (similar to the sohei or japanese warrior monk, the yamabushi often kept to themselves from what I gather. Also both favored the naginata weapon)
Here are some of a sohei

Also what about a chinese character using a queue hairstyle, which was worn by the Manchus of central Manchuria.
Fearless scene

No offence, but when you have to reply to your own post to get it attention, its probbly a sign that this post just isnt anything anyone wants to be apart of. Kudos for the effort, but i think your idea for this requires too much effort , most people just wanna post their opnion on something and move on.
I like the idea, but to be honest I don't think it will fit very well in the Mortal Kombat Universe. The costumes are too different from the original cast of Mortal Kombat.

None taken. I understand what your'e saying but I just wish more people would post to threads that are actually thought provoking and different from the rest, instead of posting in mindless repetitive threads that are generally about "Which characters should be in the next game?" and "Whats your favorite character?" This is one of my biggest complaints about the site.
Anyways, I don't care if anyone posts in this thread. I will update it only on the basis that the MK team may be reading this. Nothing more.

Hey MKLARKIE
No, I agree with you on the overall style on some of the images I posted not fitting in. What I 'm saying is some of the attributes can be used (like the hairstyle I mentioned) and still fit in with MK just like they have taken things from various cultures (alot of which is asian).

Now you're just being annoying.Stop trying to keep your thread 'alive'.If no one is going to post in it keep it that way instead of bumping it every 10 minutes. And yes what you did was a double-post.

1.You can't update a thread like this because there is nothing to be updated.
2.It's funny that you think the MK team roams the MKO Forums using peoples' "spectacular" ideas.

Your the one whos being annoying because you have nothing constructive to say regarding the thread topic. I'm not trying to keep this thread "alive". And I'm not double posting. What are you like the resident asshole of this place? You seem to tick everyone off. And how do you know the MK team doesn't browse this forum?

You posted in your own thread more than anyone else has.Give me proof of me ticking someone off, give me the link...

Alright, here's a complete third party view.
1. I thought double posting was a two in a row thing?
2. I doubt the midway people would be cruising these forums. As I am yet to see someone with the "Developer" rank (Midway Games employee).
3. According to the community FAQ's, what you're doing is a form of "bumping".
4. I don't like your character. I don't know what the story would be and I don't know how it would fit into the MK roster at all.

I'll cut the guy some slack. We don't get very many good or original ideas around these parts. Yes, I know this is a fighting game, but thinking shouldn't be THAT hard. And it's really far to easy to complain about someone else and insult them without provocation or real reason.
Back on topic, I think the character basis for the first couple of pictures might work, albeit with some flourish. It has shades of Ermac and Rain in it that might translate well as an alternate costume.
The second set I don't think would go so well, simply because that era of history and style of fashion and hair has past and Mortal Kombat isn't a historical game: it takes place in the present/future, and most of the cast is designed to represent that, albeit with some liberties (Edenia seems to be particularly "old-time flashy").
Coming up with brand new original ideas for characters is hard. MK has relied, mostly, on pallet swaps to diversify the cast and even though they look different now, they were born out of a simple color swap. Completely original characters have been hit or miss; Hotaru seems to be rather popular, but I think Dairou is more of a place-holder. Shunjinko was rather lambasted; can't say I'm too fond of Taven either.
For really fresh characters, I would avoid the obvious Asian influence. That's been done and done to death. Rather, more "creative" character designs are needed. Sareena is a good example of a character whose visual style is unique, simple, and effective. Kira's is as well.
Basically, when you think of the good designed characters of MK, Sub-Zero and Scorpion, the originals, come to mind, along with probable classics like bio-armed Jax, robot Smoke, demon emperor Shao Kahn, four-armed Goro, bald albino Quan Chi, fan-toting Kitana, razor-fanged Baraka, and others that have something that really makes them stand out as unique and creative visually, beyond just powers and personality.
I would like to see something new thrown in, such as perhaps some new Oni, humanoid monsters, or "normal" characters (Kobra is as close as we got....) that got caught up in the mix. Maybe a big, armored heavy character, or a fast and quick lithe character, in contrast to the fairly similar body sizes and shapes of the majority of the cast.

Here's a couple:
Over all look is unique, and I think could fit right in, or force Mk outside it's box of the norm..
Three-way staff. I love how this weapon works. I love how complex it is, and how simple it is. All sorts of opportunity there offensively and defensively, imO.
====
Also, we have all kinds of projectiles....but no pea shooter person. No darts. I think throwing knives from Sareena is the closest we have to little, quick projectiles.
===
We have robots, technologically advanced individuals....but no "Toy Maker". Someone who is not special besides what his mind concieves, and what he is able create from those ideas. We have the inference of nano tech, but not the guy who formulates those things.
Along the same line, we also have no Scientist, No Laboratory...no "Dr." I'd say, draw from the SAW movies...the guy behind all the traps. We have no technologically defined "Evil Genius". The opposition to Nightwolf and all the nature stuff.
I'm saying that if we can have sorcerers, we can have the mechanically inclined as well. So long as they are talented to a fantastic degree.
I think I'm gonna put this in my thread as well...

Hey Asesino
If you have a image that isn't that big go to this link and use the code next to where it says Images.
If you have a big image, upload your image on www.imageshack.us then copy the code next to where it says "Thumbnail for Websites" then paste it in your post. If you don't get what I'm telling you, use the first method.
Hey Predator, yeah gotta love that 3 section staff. haha. Did you see that Fearless scene I posted up in this thread? Jet Li is using one.

I've never really had a huge problem with Midway's ideas for MK, considering that compared to the other fighters..(which suck overall lol) but I'll get back to this thread, post some pics on perhaps certain characters that haven't really been in the MK universe yet.
BTW, one of those guys looks a lot like Dairou ^ ^
Love that hot girl that looks like Sareena
