I've already posted sales figures that show another certain fighting game outselling MK. Someone please provide the sales figures that show MK outselling any other fighting game franchise in the U.S., other than VF. VF isn't big in the States.

Who cares? USA is still the main place to sell games; Japan a close second. There's a reason Halo is still around, even though it is pretty much ignored in Japan. MK is still a million seller, and it has sold in the long run as many copies as many other high-profile games (like Soul Calibur 3, Dead or Alive 3, Virtua Fighter 4.) The only modern fighting game to truly surpass it in the American market is Tekken. But, MK still has a very decent fan-following in Japan as well (I'm from Japan and it has its comfortable niche from my understanding.) Selling a game still doesn't determine its worth, but much of what Boon said IS true. Don't most games just throw in more characters, say it's "3" instead of "2", and depend on the game's name to get them bucks? Sure, the game may be good, but few, few, few games really evolve like MK has (for better or worse.) Soul Calibur 3 is a great game, but it's almost exactly like Soul Calibur 2. Tekken 4 is a lot like Tekken Tag. There's not a lot of evolution, and many people are comfortable with that. I am to a degree, but, whether MK succeeds or fails, at least they try something different with each new installment, and I respect that. I think that it has paid off, and this game will be no different. But, I think it's wise to withhold judgment on THIS game and its creators until one actually plays it.

What you don't believe that Tekken doesn't change to many things and relies on it's name to sell? It does, it really does. How many new caracters in T5 have been added since the last one?
Tekken is a lot like MK, I think. They always have "diversion" games, like Tekken Beachball or Devil Within. I believe Tekken does change, but not so much as MK. That doesn't mean Tekken, or any other fighter, is a bad game, just that they have a system that works and they stick with what works. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. MK is still broke and needs fixin', but they also take risks. Concerning sales figures, I don't have a huge list or anything from every region in the world or even the US; it's not like I follow the exact number of sales figures, but MK is a huge seller, and I do remember reading that, despite its shortcomings, it did outsell Virtua Fighter 4, Dead or Alive 3, Bloody Roar 4, Capcom vs. SNK 2, Tao Feng, and, so far, Soul Calibur 3. The Namco giants that are Tekken and Soul Calibur 2 trounce it, but they are good games that evolve yet maintain a sense of continuity as well. Don't misread my statements; I'm not saying fighting games don't evolve or take risks or that Boon was lying, either. I'm saying that, for the most part, that's what fighting games do. Sure, Tekken will always have new diversion modes and little changes, Soul Calibur will have Soul modes, Virtua Fighter new ranking tournaments, etc. MK, however, like Nintendo against its competitors, has changed its game-style significantly from game to game, apart from just the diversion elements (the combo-system of MK3, the weapons and 3D jump in MK4, the 3-style gameplay of MK:DA, the interactive environments of MK:D, and now the air combo additions). These changes rarely are superficial and typically determine and define the game-play for that specific game, unlike most other games which stick with one certain style. I'm not saying that's the best move, either, but, damn, it's ballsy. Edit: Most of my assumptions come from the articles I read throughout the internet that say that MK:DA was the largest selling fighting game at the time of its release and this link, developer information , which backs up those finds, though I will admit the uncertainty of this information.

Yeah, and MK doesn't sell because of its "name" either? Please....
Who gives a shit about how many characters there are when they all play the same and are broken to hell? Also, one shouldn't lose respect for boon; because he's said nothing that he hasn't said before. It's all the same PR, blah blah blah. Just more smoke and dust manifested into gimmicks, meant to cover up the total lack of proper mechanics and appliable gameplay.
I see all these people nutting over the mention of a "parry." Hell, MKDA had a one button reversal, that was real top tier, lol. I remember durring early MKD news how everyone, including the "haters" and "elitists" were gawking over throws, "possible" counter hits and other shit. TTT brought up the point that we're like starving children. We're fed a saltin and we're happy as a clam. We're like "THANKS, YOU'RE AWSOME!!"
The only thing I find remotely intriguing is the HP,MP,LP etc system that looks te be implented. Possible logic ensues? I doubt it, but I'll gladly accept it if true.

I did read what he said. And I was put off by the overall ignorant manner in which it was presented, so I didn't choose to interpret it as anything important enough to give a second thought. Is that true? Maybe not. But after reading it, it sounded ignorant, so I chose to interpret it that way. It had nothing to do with me being too lazy to read it properly, and everything to do with him being too lazy to write it properly. If they're his opinions, and he's the one who wants others to hear them, then why should I be expected to waste my time reading it properly, if he can't take the time to write it properly? I read it word for word and it came off like an idiotic rant.
How a statement is said, be it opinion or not, is just as important, if not more important then the content of the message. That may not be a good thing, but it's the truth.
Just as a for instance, ask any career services expert: a job interview has very little to do with your actual skills, and everything to do with how you present yourself. Is this a good thing? Maybe not. Means that that people best qualified for the job may not be getting it, but it's still true.
Some bum on Cops could be a friggin genius, but if he's yelling his opinions in the middle of the street with no shirt on, he still gets his butt thrown in jail and ignored.
People want to present themselves as ignorant, then its their own fault if others give their arguments the short end of the stick.

I can see that from the was Digital Assassin writes is that all he cares about if flaming Ed Boon...
He did not give the opening video a chance. It was a very cool video by the way. He doesnt give the gameplay a chance, even though it has been added with arial Kombat, something I disagree with...
BTW, fact is fact. You know why it matters that Mortal Kombat sells more???
Because no one is holding a gun to anyones head that likes Virtual fighter...
Virtual Fighter and MK are on the same playing field....
Simply put, more people choose MK. Digital Assassin you're on the wrong side of history here, plain and simple... The fact is, I don't understand how you lost respect from Ed Boon from one interview?? That is a serious twist in logic. You probably have something against him from the beginning....

Who cares about how many characters have been added? Do you realise why Tekken has gotten it's fanbase in the first place? It certainly wasn't because of how many characters it added each game.
Save your opinions for things you have a clue about, thanks.

That link does look a bit suspect, whatever, I don't mind.
I appreciate what MK does, but I always get the feeling that for every new thing they do, there's always new ways in which it's flawed.
If they could make solid, less flawed gameplay over these diversions I'd go for it. MK can't afford to spend so much time on them when I see these infinates, 50/50 mix-ups, inescapeable throws, missing options to do whatever when you're on the ground and a decent risk vs reward system in which a jab doesn't take longer to recover than swinging a huge hammer/sword etc.

Well if you refuse to take part fully in a debate because of comparisons with bums on tv programmes and job interviews then that's your loss.
Labelling things as ignorant rants without responding to the points he has made is a bit pointless really.

i agree will digital...
it is absolutely absurd that the fighting has not been improved to compete with the other fighters...

If you don't like Ed then don't play his games, its that simple. Ed Boon didn't ruin MK. Ed saved the franchise from becoming the peice of shit John Tobias would have turned it into (Tao Feng) I hear allot about how Ed ruined MK and John would have done better, I DONT FUCKING THINK SO! WHO MADE MKM, MKSF AND TAO FENG? JOHN!!! Ed saved MK. from the brink of oblivion, thats why I respect him.

It's nice for Ed to say that his game outsold others in the console area, but it's also puzzling when you know that 90% of the people who play VF in other countries that play VF didnt buy the console version at all. They only spend hella money on the arcade. And in Japan, it costs $1 per match... think about it. The average VF player in Japan has played over 3000 matches. I've used more money on Tekken 5 in the arcades than Ive used to buy the console version by at least 3 times and Im only an average T5 player.
Now do you think that Midway's numbers hold...? Not really. It's just smart marketing to make you think other games don't make as much money, when in fact they do.
Factor in the fact that Midway has to release their games on several consoles to be able to sell well and its no wonder. If you look at sales, SC2 and MKDA sold nearly the same amount. Except SC2 was also churning in big money for the arcades worldwide as well, well over their console sales. Both of those games were multi-console, which is why they sold so well. In comparison, if you compare just Tekken 5 to MKDA sales on consoles, Tekken 5 sold about 70% as much as MKDA on sales. Except Tekken 5 only came on PS2 whereas MKDA came on multiple consoles. Now add Tekken 5's arcade play (which is hella huge again), and T5 easily makes more money than MKDA.
Marketing is of course, always skewed. They never tell you all the facts. Like Midway boasts how MK is a best selling franchise. They dont tell you that there has been like 20-30 MK games that have been released on multiple consoles and handhelds. Vs competitors who keep their shit exclusive. Like Tekken has only released like what, 6-7 games compared to MK's 20-30 and Tekken still makes a comparable amount. Puzzling? You bet.

who gives a shit about arcades anymore? its funny when people say "in other countries" and mention arcades. arcades in the us, are dead, and have been. theres no money in it. maybe theyre still popular in japan or wherever. mk is a us made game. and i think most other fighers listed in this thread are japanese (could be wrong). so that could have an impact on sales depending where you live, but not much. it may cost a dollar a match and all that, but you gotta remember that other countries money isnt worth the same amount as ours. a buck in other countries is like 50 cents here, or something like that.

I guess if you look at it in that vein, then Ed did save the series. lol But in all seriousness, to DigitalAssassin, I don't think you should base your opinion of this game on a teaser trailer that hardly shows anything, some info (thats usually not credible even from Boons mouth), and some screen shots and that just makes you out to be kind of foolish, and you could end up looking stupid if this game actually *does* turn out to be great. I would do the more grown-up thing and wait until around the time of E3 or atleast until you play the game yourself until you start complaining and bashing the game all to hell once you have some valid proof to back your opinions with instead of pure speculation on your behalf. Only then will your opinions be taken seriously.

Well it's true isn't it? Tekken never loses 7 characters. It's always the same modes except for the adventure mini game which always sucks. MKD's minigames were way better.
I never wanna play DOA again cause it's just plain stupid. Soulcalibur is awsome, but the new modes (besides CAC) are all stupid too. MKD isn't afraid to gamble. Sometimes it's good and sometimes not. It still out sells any other fighter. Bottom line: Ed Boon said the truth, live with it

Like Tekken has only released like what, 6-7 games compared to MK's 20-30 and Tekken still makes a comparable amount. Puzzling? You bet.
It sucks that when you measure other fighting games sales, you don't measure their arcade income... their MAIN source of money.
Now add Tekken 5's arcade play (which is hella huge again), and T5 easily makes more money than MKDA.

who gives a shit about arcades anymore? its funny when people say "in other countries" and mention arcades. arcades in the us, are dead, and have been. theres no money in it. maybe theyre still popular in japan or wherever. mk is a us made game. and i think most other fighers listed in this thread are japanese (could be wrong). so that could have an impact on sales depending where you live, but not much. it may cost a dollar a match and all that, but you gotta remember that other countries money isnt worth the same amount as ours. a buck in other countries is like 50 cents here, or something like that.
Maybe in Canda, but the Yen is worth more than the Dollar.

What the hell? When talking about total sales it's proper that the actual "total sales" are brought up, which includes other countries and their medium; let it be arcades, console, PC or whatever. You can't be like "well, arcades don't matter here because..." blah blah. It matters in total sales, dude.
Who cares about sales, though? MotW is dope and I've saved more in change than that game has sold, lol.

I wouldn't go that far man lol.More like comparing a vette to a cavalier dude lol.
MK being the vette and Tao Feng being the cavalier.
Threads like this are getting old.

MKA is not the last MK game, so how is Ed killing off his creation?

Adding a lot of new stuff to the game play doesn't make it better.
It's how we'll it works.
MK's been adding a lot of stuff lately, but pretty much all of it is messed up big time.
It shows what Ed's mentality is... Quantity over quality type of thinking.
The other games don't need to make drastic changes, because they have a system that works well.
---------------------------------------------------------------
For whoever asked...
Tekken 5 has 5 new characters counting the 3rd version of the game.
Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection.
The new characters are...
Raven
Feng Wei
Lili
Dragunov
Asuka
They are all totally original, except for Asuka, which is a new version of Jun Kazama, but with a ton of different moves.
(Edit) almost forgot, Jinpachi, the new boss.
He's got some of heihachi's moves, because they are related, but he's also got a ton of his own attacks. He can even throw fireballs. He’s a demon, with a giant mouth in his stomach.

1 US Dollar = 116.937 Japanese Yen
Go to google or something.
Anyway, regardless of that, Tekken, VF, SC worldwide sells better than MK, no question. There's really no point in arguing something profoundly retarded as in "arcades are dead in America so the arcades in Japan or any other countries don't count at all because Japanese money isn't worth shit a;sldkj;zxcvusdf!!!". None of that, please.
