Ballack sure played his heart out in this game....wow...he had SO many opportunities to score...hit the bar and one just went wide. But Holland killed Latvia 3-0 congrats to the Dutch for making it through.

well my predictions were correct
Czechs beat Germany and Holland beat Latvia. I feel sorry for Ballack and Khan, they're the only world class players they have.
Good luck to all the Portugease supporters here, I'll be supporting England as usual tomorrow. I'm quietly confident about this game as well, it's gonna be a close one for sure, it's the same situation as the England vs France game, we have the potential to easily beat Portugal as they have the same potential to beat us easily. We'll see how it goes.
I have no idea who the winner will be playing in the semi's, I'd hate to guess a winner between Holland and Sweden.

I didn't watch much of the Germans. But I don't think they even took one of their best young midfielders = Thomas Hitzlsperger (sp??) of Aston Villa, did he go? And if he did, did he play? Cus I've seen him on TV for Villa and he's awesome.
come on England...

Aston Villa is awesome but I wish Juan Pablo Angel had more exposure...

All i'm going to say is:-
1. England were absolutely terrible, the defenders were brilliant everyone else were lazy and crap. We played too deep inside our own half allowing Portugal attack us too much
2. during the game the referee gave everything towards portugal, and he CHEATED us out of the game, no portugease player was pushed in that goal. We were playing 12 men during the game, and one was Swiss.
3. penaltys, what can you say, England are the fall guy when it comes to penalties, first 1990, then 1996, same again in 2000 and now in 2004. In Beckhams defense the penalty spot was a complete mud-patch no wonder he miskicked it.
So dissapointing, the worst part is I genuinely felt after seeing England play so well against France we could've gone on to win the whole thing, I don't think Portugal can do, I geniunely think that England could've beat either Sweden or Holland, I can see Portugal losing in the next round.

it is a well known footballing fact that referees are against the English doing well, they will disallow anything to stop England.
Portugal can count themselves lucky, England were crap and they could only get it to penalties, I wouldn't have liked to play England if they played well, oh well home we go

Excellent points FLSTYLE, as I agree with all of em. Why did England play sooooo negatively? We showed we can score in EVERY match, why go defensive now?
It was almost unbearable to watch as an England fan, but I will say the ref was entirely against us. I still dont know why the Campbell's goal was disallowed, and what about all the 'stutter' run ups Portugal players were doing in the shootout? If you look at the rules, you're not allowed to break your run up for an advantage - and they were seeing where James was leaning to before shooting!
James was nowhere near any of the penalties, and looked very average throughout the Euros. Ah well, I may sound bitter, but I'm just disappointed again - as England let their fans down again. Will we ever win a penalty shootout? (well they did in euro 96, but then they lost in a PS, in the very next round!)

I'm still mad Germany didnt make it in....so I'm rooting for Holland now. I hope the Greeks own France tomorrow, I hate them. I dont think Holland will have a tough time against Sweden.
As for England losing...I didnt see the game but it shocked me when I saw that it went to 6-5 on penalty kicks :O
And congrats to the Portugal team on winning what HAD to be a great game and congrats to all the Portugal fans.

Rui Costa's goal was by far the best goal so far. And whats up with Beckham and penalty kicks???
A player with his quality should have no problem. Now i can see why Queen Elizebeth called him "the king" of football.....it makes so much sense

Something I can't believe is that he has one of the best free kicks in the world, so how does he miss from 12yards against just the goalie, when he can bend the ball past the wall + gk from 25ft?

France vs Greece, my prediction for this one will be:-
a good start from greece, they will prove to everyone why they are in the next round and won't let france through so easily by scoring the first goal.
During the game France will flood greece with attacks, a player who has been generally quiet for france so far Robert Pires will shine today and score the first goal for france, then france's class will be there for all to see as Zidane adds another goal to his tally and Henry destroys Greece with one of his speed goals.
France 3 - 1 Greece

Oups, I've put a ('t) to "can". I meant anything CAN happen. My bad. I couldn't watch the game but I've sean the goal refused by the referee. It's a shame but we all know that when a referee makes a decision, there is no turning back.
I hope France will beat Greece. Btw how come there is no Golden Goal in this Euro?

it's the silver goal this year, you carry on playing till the end of the half, if there is no winner then you play the second half.
On tv last night they said they're going back to the classic version for the next tournament, playing the full time of extra time, no matter what the score is, which I applaud

You're doing the "poor England, nobody likes us" act, aren't you? That doesn't work anymore, sorry...
the game was fixed so that the host team would win. i'd even bet that portugal get to the finals. think about how much money portugal will make if the home team go through to the end.
that goal shouldn't have been disallowed.
also, i've always thought thought beckham wasn't as good as every one said and last night proved it

At first I didn't believe the Sweden vs Denmark game was fixed. But after watching the England / Portugal game, I have been thinkin that there have been some strange coincedences over the past few years:
Euro96 Quaterfinal: England vs Spain
England were the hosts of Euro 96, and Spain 'scored' 2 goals (!) in the 90mins that were both disallowed (even though both were legitimate, and should have counted), the game ended 0-0 and England went on to win on penalties, before losing in the semis on penalties to Germany.
France 98: France, the host nation, had a relatively easy run to the final
(Paraguay, Italy, Croatia in the knockout stages isnt that hard - with Italy the only real tough ones), and then beat an un-interested Brazil (with a "sick" Ronaldo) 3-0 in the final.
Euro 2000 1st Round: Spain vs Yugoslavia
In injury time Spain, who were losing 3-2 after 90mins, scored twice and wom the game 4-3 - thew winning goal was scored in the 94th minute, which eliminated Norway, who would have gone through if Spain lost.
World Cup 2002: South Korea
Again the hosts made large strides in the tournament (with assistance from Fifa) by reaching the Semi Finals. Beating Italy in very controversial circumstances - another 'goal' disallowed that should have counted.
Euro 2004 First Round: Sweden vs Denmark
Before this match, the Swedes and Danes had 4pts each. Italy had 2pts and needed to beat Bulgaria to advance, and hope that one of Sweden or Denmark wins - or they draw 0-0 or 1-1 and Italy would still go through. BUT if Denmark and Sweden tied 2-2, a score that has only happened ONCE before in the 83 games between the countries, then Italy would be elimnated. And of course it finished 2-2 with Sweden equalizing in the 89min.
Euro 2004 Quaterfinal: England vs Portugal (yesterday!!)
England, who didn't play well at all after scoring, were playing the host
nation in Lisbon. The Portuguese equalized in the 83rd, but England replied in the 89th min with a Sol Campbell 'goal' that was perfectly fine - but was disallowed again for a 'foul' on the keeper. It went to penalties and England lost (again).
Just some crazy football entertainment eh?
