Razor, which Ninja Assasin movie? That narrows it down aproximately very little, and I am bit of a sucker for ninsploitation movies.

I only know of one with that as the actual title.

Originally Scorpion's family wasn't killed at all until later on. IN MK1 it is stated that he will never know his family again implying them to be alive, not until MK4 we get the FAMILY AND CLAN line (well, not counting MK3 mass soul-steal from Kahn hijinks).

Mythologies was the game to establish the death of the Shirai Ryu and Scorpion's family at Quan Chi's hands.

Mythologies is set either two or ten years before MK1 depending on how you read the backstory, and is still canon to MK9, judging by a line from Raiden.

Thanks. I still want to drive a bulldozer through Tobias' teeth for Mythologies, and not only because of shit gameplay, but whatever.

EDIT: THAT Ninja Assassin? If I ever were to pick a good actor to play Liu Kang in my MK revision, he would have been it. I mean the hero.

Scorpion pronounced his name as Bai Han. That IS a correct pronounciation for several pictograms which are aproximate in English as Bi. Interesting.

My favorite episode so far. Really sick portrayal of Scorpion.

Anyway, regarding the time period, did they specifically mention that this is feudal Japan? I mean, I know it would be a pretty sorry cop out, but they could just as well say that this is current. This is, after all, a fictional world.

Still my favorite episode, a little better than Johnny Cage's and far better than Mileena/Kitana's/Raidens. Still disappointed in those ones.

There are no such things as shoguns in modern-day Japan.

The cryomancers do age. In the bios somewhere, it says Sub-zero is like 32 or something. Tbh I don't really care because the Raiden episode jumped the shark for me. I honestly prefer Annihilation over the last episode.

Just because we have an otherwise modern universe with ninjas who shoot ice in it does not mean we can also start randomly assuming that this is an alternate history where the fucking Tokugawa Shogunate was never toppled and instead became a modern-day feudal empire.

Awesome episode.

I really don't mind that Scorpion/Sub-Zero's rivalry took place in ancient times. (MK Conquest went the same route with it as well.)

I think that it's honestly not that important to their storyline. Look at DC comics heroes for example, Superman used to take place during WWII times and went toe-to-toe with Hitler, of course in modern incarnations that took place long before Superman was even born. Whether Clark first went to Metropolis and became Superman in the late 1930's or in the 2010's is irrelevant to his character. The time doesn't matter so much as the place. All that is important is that he is from Krypton, has Kryptonian parents Jor-El and Lara, and came to Earth in Smallville and moved to Metropolis.

With Scorpion/Sub-Zero, all that really matters is the Japanese ninja Hanzo Hasashi was knocked off by a Chinese warrior Bi-Han. Arguably some of these details aren't even that important as their real names (and Scorpion's country) weren't even established in the first game. That these details were kept signifies their importance to the story, and it being set a long time ago seems to fit their characters more.

What will be interesting is to see how the cyberninjas fit into everything. I can only imagine that, out of necessity, Kuai Liang will be a descendant of Bi-Han rather than a brother.

Kevin is a genius.

Absolutely fucking love this episode. The Japanese dialogue is what I've wanted to see interpreted in a movie sequence for the introduction of Scorpion's story.

The episode stays very pure to the nature of the original ninja and it's origins. I feel like they've literally hit the nail in the coffin. The costumes are perfect, the actors have done a great job on their part, the snowy environments are as I've imagined this story to look like.

Was expecting Scorpion to be more stealthy, but we have yet to see more of him. Ian Dale definitely adds character to Scorpion, this is coming from a die hard 20yr MK veteran / Scorpion fan.

Subzero appears to be a dick, as expected, and as perfectly described by Chrome. I love Subzero to death here. Both Scorpion and Subzero are 10 out of fucking 10 perfect.

MK rebirth trailer, Raiden, Johnny, and this one are the best. Didn't really like the Kitana trailer because of the anime style. If this ends up being a movie, I want them to stay true to the dark style of the very first MK Rebirth trailer and the previous mentioned. Baraka for example was introduced as a doctor that went ballistic and redid his own face with piercings and added blades to his arms. Why was Baraka different in the Kitana episode?

Anyways, I am loving Kevin's take on the MK franchise. Please keep up the phenomenal work brother.

Awesome episode.
One of the best so far alongside with Johhny and Raiden episodes.

One minor thing that I didn't like - it were masks of Scorpion and Sub-Zero. And while Scorpions's mask looks more or less it could be real, Sub-Zero's looks like a piece of plastic.

What a great way to resurrect a dying series.

As of this morning the video only had 2,000 views, which is sad because it's the best so far. The details with this story was never really well played out until MK9 and just was about this clan fighting this clan. Nice to see more of the greatest rivalry in MK history being told.

He was different because Rebirth and Legacy are two separate things. Kevin already stated that some of the choices made in Rebirth was because of the $5,000 budget.

As for the Scorpion/Sub-Zero timeline, is it really that big of a deal? It's not like the team sat down and did hundred of hours of research for this. Besides, you're all making a huge fuss about it when we haven't seen part two yet.

Yeah it is a shame about the plastic Bi-Han mask, but I can deal with it considering the rest of the costume.

Also, I forgot to mention before that the soundtrack was awesome. Just spot on.

But then how does Quan Chi motivate Scorpion? "Fight for the Netherealm in the Mortal Kombat tournament, and I'll help you find and get revenge on...the great great great great grandson of the guy who fucked you over but died of old age a long, long time ago?"

That's not gonna work, man.

First off, I thought the epsiode was amazing, just stylistically superb. The way the camera pans down in the forest of snow to reveal Scorpion before he sees the frozen Shogun; marvelous. And as mentioned above, the music was perfect.
Plus I'm a big Japanophile for ancient / Pre-modern Japan, so understandibly, this was my fave episode (alongside the Johnny Cage one.)

However, being a Japanophile means there were some things i picked up on that were a little out of place. Nitpicky maybe, but hey, that's what we're here for...

RazorsEdge701 Wrote:

Except that the Japanese dialogue seemed kinda stilted, like none of the actors speak it all that fluently or something, not that I can tell for sure because I don't speak Japanese either.

This is especially true of Scorpion. Very wooden Japanese, definitely sounds like he's not a native speaker. Same could be said of his wife, though I'm not 100% sure.
The best Japanese in the story? The initial narrator and the kid! He sounds just like the children I teach here. Spot on little man!

Some of the inital narration too, I don't think was translated accurately. I'm not good at Japanese, so I'm not 100% sure, but some of the words were not accurately translated in the subtitles. Then again, that might be more a result of the fact that Japanese and English very rarely translate seemlessly. What we say in English, the Japanese just don't say.

And there were some inconsistencies too. Not only was Scorpion's Japanese less than fluid, he said a few things out of place too. He talks about "MY village", saying 'Watashi no..."
Men here, especially gruff, hard-ass (and most likely ninja men) tend to say "Boku" for 'I/me" and "Boku no" for 'my'.,,, women are more inclined to say 'watashi' for "I" or 'watashi no' for "my".
It's not incorrect Japanese, but as a badass mofo, I'm pretty sure Scorp would probably sound like a 'real' man...

Also, ESPECIALLY in pre modern Japan (if this really is set in feudal times, who knows?? I'm not getting dragged into that debate) it's highly unlikely from what I've read, and even what I see here in the modern day, that Scorp would kiss his wife like that, on the lips, before he left.
Kissing on the lips was seen as a very clandestine thing to do, almost dirty. Husband and wife very rarely loved one another in the Western sense, and even more rarely expressed that, and especially not in the form of a kiss!
Lame as it would have been, a bow between them would have been more appropriate.
Even today, kissing between couples in public isn't as common as it is in the West. Not even close.

But hey, I'm being nitpicky. The timeline incongruity is way more of an issue!

I liked the episode. I never really cared for Scorpion before the episode, but found myself liking him more after. It was interesting to me that KT chose to cast Scorpion in the light of the protagonist and Sub-Zero in the role of antagonist. It's a complete reversal from anyway their rivialry has been portrayed before. Even as a SZ fan, I still really enjoyed it.
