Hey, people I found this on youtube. It's the animated "prequel" to the movie. (Even though it has nothing to do with the movie in the long run due to the many contradictions)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=WjdmOeLJP1I
It's based on the first MK game. (After all, it has all of the MK1 characters except for Kano... who is briefly mentioned though.) It tries to combine traditional animation with CGI animation. To... mediocre effects. I'll get this out of the way. The CGI in this movie is horribly outdated even for its time 10 years ago.
But now on to the characters themselves.
Liu Kang's story is kind of a mix between his game and movie story. Well, actually, the only thing taken from the movies is that he's a descendant of the original Kung Lao. (who looks like the current Kung Lao in his flashback fight against Goro. I don't think the original Kung Lao wore that hat) Overall, Liu Kang's potrayel isn't particulary bad. But particulary good either but... not bad either.
Johnny Cage is pretty much how you'd expect him to be. Egotistical, a bit of an idiot, flirting with Sonya. He's the comic relief of the movie. And... believe it or not there are actually a few signs where he's used well in that regard. Of course, with Cage, you're never laughing with him, you're laughing at him.
His interaction in Sonya was particulary hilarious.
Johnny Cage: I was born to win this tournament!
Sonya: You were born to annoy people.
(After Shang Tsung greets the tournament entrants)
Johnny Cage: (whispering) Do you think Prince Charming wants us to bow down and grovel just a little?
Sonya: ...Look who's talking Mr. Modesty himself.
Sonya is how you'd expect her to be. Though Kano is never shown. (At least not to my memory) It is implied that Sonya's after him. She spends most of the movie making fun of Johnny Cage or brushing the tournament aside because she just wants to find Kano.
Sub-Zero is well... prepare to be disappointed Sub-Zero fans. Here he's just one of Shang Tsung's bodyguards though also stated to be a member of the Lin Q. (Yes, they called it the "Lin Q" Why? I have no idea) And even more screwed up is that they say that the "Lin Q" is an Outworld clan. And he's got a pretty terrible voice. (Sub-Zero never gets good luck with voices. His MK:DOTR voice, provided by 90210's Luke Perry was just as bad really)
Scorpion... I'm happy to say that for once in a medium outside of the games... SCORPION IS NEUTRAL! YAY!!!!
...sorry. It's just after seeing Scorpion potrayed as evil for no real apparent reason other than making him evil over in both movies, MK:DOTR, MK: Conquest, and the comics, it was refreshing to finally see something where Scorpion was the good guy and Sub-Zero was the bad guy after it had been the other way around so many other times. Though they use that "Scorpion must kill Sub-Zero to be allowed into Secred Hall of his dead clan" plot that Malibu Comics used and then threw aside in favor of making Scorpion a general for Shao Kahn for no apparent reason.
Scorpion does attack the Earthrealm warriors, but only because Shang Tsung warned that if Sub-Zero was killed by the Earthrealm warriors then he'd never get his revenge and he'd risk "eternal oblivion". He's never seen fighting against the Earthrealm warriors after that, preferring instead to just stalk Sub-Zero and fight for his chance to fight him.
Frankly, everyone seemed to just automatically assume Scorpion and Sub-Zero were from rival clans. (Scorpion's clan is also from Outworld in this movie. WTF?) The games didn't establish such a thing until MKM:SZ. (Frankly, I wold've preferred it if Scorpion was just a guy who the Lin Kuei had marked for death instead of being from a rival clan like Scorpion's MK1 ending said but oh well...)
Raiden, well, he's the mentor of the Earthrealm warriors and there's not much to say about him. His voice is just awful in this movie.
Shang Tsung, I don't have much to say about him quite frankly. I can tell he's voice by Jim Cummings, who I usually find to be a great voice actor, but it doesn't really fit Shang. I guess it shows that even the best voice actors have a miss here and there. (I should know, I usually like Kevin Michael Richardson's voice acting. I thought he could do no bad voice. That is, until I heard his Joker on "The Batman". Ugh... such a horrendous miscast)
One last character, Goro has completely new backstory in this film... you'd have to see it for yourselves.
Well, it's not particulary awful despite some horrendous CGI, but it's nothing special either.

I've watched the first part. It's pretty crappy when it comes to art (both in 2D and 3D), but storywise it's way cool.
I wish I knew how Johnny Cage and Kung Lao would look if they appeared in Defenders of the Realm, but I know I wouldn't find it here.

Pretty sure that was the story from the games, too.
