HOW?
The same way they've been doing it so far. Update patches.

Everyone gets patches when the DLC comes out. You have to pay to unlock the content. Like every other game to ever have DLC.
Oh my god. RAGE! You have no idea how wrong this is. Smoke was top tier in UMK3. Scorpion was mid to bottom! Smoke wasn't just a copycat of Scorpion in UMK3. He was quite a bit better. Only someone who knows nothing about anything would say that. "He has same moves." Yeah. Not a valid defense.
I know guys, feeding into trolls never helps, I just had to correct that horrible error.

Smoke takes Rains spot? Where the hell did I say that, anyway I hate Smoke because he's another ninja, and the most boring one, in my favorite MK games he was just a copycat and I can name more reasons why I disliked him.
In this version however, I might grow on him, while his fans turn their fantasy-less backs on him.

How the hell does it not look like Smoke!? He has the UMK3 gray outfit. He just happens to not be wearing a hood thus we can see his hair.
And holy Christ, how can you be down on something from a small blurry image? OH NO EYES ARE WRONG COLOR! OH NO THIS CHARACTER WHOSE HAIR WE"VE NEVER SEEN IS NOW LONG AND I DIDN'T PICTURE IT THAT WAY! I mean c'mon guys. Some of this is just too much.

I'm sorry but I cannot see anything on this character that tells me it is Smoke due to the blurriness that I see when I zoom in on the picture. Sure, there are a lot of hints of gray everywhere on the torso, and sure, its a new touch if it is Smoke with the hair, but honestly, I cannot see how this is Smoke unless I see a better image of the character.
And I can see how some people would react to this if it was Smoke. As in, we've never seen these character's full hair except for Sub-Zero's. It would be unusual to see a character whose been wearing a hood for the longest time reveal the Fabio-like hair of his. So, of course, this reaction would be expected if this is a major change in character. A lot of the characters have stayed the same, if Smoke is the only character that's getting a drastic make-over, then deal with the reactions.

The problem is that it isn't a major change. We've never seen his hair. People can't call something that was never established a change. Okay, you don't LIKE the decision to give him long hair? Okay, fine. It's not a big deal. But, whatever tickles your pickle. That's the way I see it.

Ah, so this really isn't a whole lot different than having the content right on the disk itself. I guess it's slightly different, because they can pretend that they didn't have it ready in time for release, but you're still paying to unlock something you already own.Everyone gets patches when the DLC comes out. Ah, MKO, constantly upset about shit.
I for one think that design is AWESOME. Truly hope that is Smoke.

Yeah they can. Every new look a character gets is a change. Hence Reptile. He's gotten a completely new look, you can't say that his appearance isn't a change when it totally is.
Seeing Smoke like this, its a change because no one knew what this character had underneath his hood. That's a changed look.
Me personally, I wouldn't have an issue with this look. Some might, but that's their opinion. But you can't say that this isn't a change in look because it is. If something new gets added, then it's a change.
Mileena's eyes, Reptile's appearance, Noob's outfit... They're all changes, whether they're that drastic or not.

Not a bad idea! After I saw that image, I was immediately hoping that Reptile's alt costume would look something like that.

I guess you can look at it that way but it's the only way you can get people who paid for the DLC and people that didn't pay for the DLC to play together.
You don't technically own the data for the DLC character since it is for free.

If Smoke only has long white hair, I could live with that.
But as he stands, he looks like Voldo wearing a Fujin wig. I realize that could be because of the battle damage, and I realize that this may not even be Smoke, but we're basing conclusions off assumed premises. Of course, if it turns out not to be Smoke, or if he's not actually an old man, and his costume is less revealing than that, I'm not going to be as upset.
We're not saying Smoke is going to look exactly like how we perceive him in this photo; we're just saying that if he does, these are our conclusions.

All fair Temp, I just don't think anyone can get enough out of that grainy image to make a conclusion. Not that you are or anything.

If that is Smoke I can already see him in his intro saying "Long hair don't care. Where there is Smoke there is fire." Random one liners lol.

I am more curious with what smoke effects on Smoke will look like. Will it be emanating from him constantly? Will it be trails of wispy smoke? Will it be billowing clouds of soot?
I do like this Smoke look but it is kind of barebones since it's just a slightly upgraded MK3/UMK Ninja costume. Awesome smoke effects would give it the visual POP the character needs.

you guys are sad. Does anyone actually know what human smoke looked like? Are you sure this is a huge departure?
He's wearing an all black body suit with the same big grey shoulder strap / vest deal that all the other non-ermac ninjas wear now. It just looks wacky because its a shitty pic and he's got full battle damage on. And he has salty grey hair, because he's a goddamned grey ninja. Do you want yet another character with blonde or black hair?
Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
The new plot says he's from Prague, so a pale european white guy with long hair makes total sense.

Dammit... I guess I wasn't the only one who saw Lucius Malfoy wearing Smoke's old outfit. Or Sephiroth.
My condolences to fans of Smoke who aren't digging it.
Know I feel the same way about Rain's hair in MKA.

My money's on billowy. It's hard enough to make good-looking wispy smoke using non-realtime methods- limited to sprites as games are, billowy is the only option that won't look like crap.

Are we even sure it's the final design? Hell maybe it's Smoke's alt.

Why wouldn't you be able to use realtime methods in this game?
