I don't see any risks with MKX. I see gimmicks.

I do not agree that a reboot constitutes a complete overhaul. A reboot should be a restart, refresh, or retelling.

Therefore I'm disappointed that with this 'reboot' we are concerned that many MK4(in particular) characters won't make it.

The risk NRS should be taking at this point is the same risk they took with Stryker. Variations, this living tower mess, all of that is exciting and NEW. That should be the new we are getting. Not tons of new characters and throwing away the past ones.

I personally want all of the MK4 characters in.

I think MK would be fine if they refined the story instead of remaking it into this crazy shitshow they have. All they need to do is steer clear of the events of Armageddon.

Sorry if it's already been said but Nash/Charlie a risky roster addition?

Bwa Ha ha!

Sorry (again), just had to laugh. Bringing back Charlie is about as risky as scratching your head. Remy, now that would be a riskier returnee. Others would include Ingrid, Twelve, Q, Oro, R.Mika, Sodom, Birdie, Eagle and Hakan.

I understand the point the OP was trying to make, but Charlie/Nash is so not a sign of Capcom being more daring. Neither MKX nor Street fighter V are taking huge risks right now, roster-wise. As far as I'm concerned, the Predator as a guest is the most risky character rumored for MKX.

Street Fighter V is not taking chances as CAPCOM is ON THE VERGE OF GOING TITS UP in the shitter.

Seriously, you think SF is risky? NONE of the games recently were risky.

just take a look at their view count on their videos

https://www.youtube.com/user/CapcomSF/videos

Street Fighter V's trailers barely have any views compared to the ones released by Mortal Kombat (when MKX's trailer was first released, it had MILLIONS of views). Its safe to say SF will be taking no risks at all since they have ZERO hype. they're really on the verge of a downfall soon due to all those years of re-releases and add-ons for SF4. Charlie isn't even that much of an obscure character. People know him as the Guile knockoff! And they've had only 4 main games? its hard to say that they've had taken risks with their roster when there haven't been many main games released where as MK has 9 main titles released (8 if you don't count MKvsDC)

In fact when was the last time they changed the main designs/moves of any of the characters? its the same special moves and same costume design every game! "risk taking" my ass....

Street Fighter is going down HARD and i will be the one laughing out loud. Especially towards Crapcom who screwed over their fans with the whole exclusive to PS4 bullshit.

SFV is being paid by Sony that's why it's exclusive to PS4/PC with crossplay,im a fan of fighting games in general including MK from the Arcade days but i see you are just a hater and from what you say you dont like fighting games.

Well, just seen the latest trailer for Street Fighter V. They could easily have re-skinned the SF2 era characters again with some new stages/variations etc but the third released character is Charlie Nash!!

Last time he was on the playable roster was in Street Fighter Alpha 3 in 1998 and never in the main series!! Brilliant to see a major developer taking some calculated roster risks and giving some love to their long-standing hard fans, not rehasing the same returning characters again and again. Very brave to be using such a character early in the marketing too!!

See, it can be done NRS!! You were once cutting edge, what happened?!

See Also; Street Fighter 5 announced...PS4 & PC exclusive.

Did you even see the end of the trailer where they revealed Bison? Charlie looks awesome, but Bison [and even Akuma] are long played out and past their sell by date.

He's bitter and disillusioned and probably has no real concern for his life at this point; he could be MK's first nihilistic, apathetic character who kills just to scrape a living, because he has nothing better to do.

You've nailed precisely why I've become a fan of the character.

I would love for him to show up in the comic but that's wishful thinking.

Who here besides me would like to see the following characters return?

Ingrid
R. Mika
Maki
Juli and Juni (as a duo, with new, original moves)
Twelve
Q
Oro
Birdie
Eagle
Sodom
Hakan
Gill
Remy (preferably with his own moves)

Characters that actually would be risky additions, unlike Charlie/Nash, a Guile rip-off they've tried to sell as the original (I read he taught Guile his moves) whose most interesting trait is wearing glasses he doesn't need. I know Remy had Guile's moves too, but his design and personality were completely different.

@Umbrascitor
I like your analysis of Dairou's character. I agree the character is promising.

Capcom accepted that money because they don't really have money. Fighters also sell better on playstation and with how much the ps4 is outselling the xbox1 I don't think its going to bite them in the ass at all.

SF brought back 1 lesser known character...woohoo! That's not that big of a risk, MKX already has 7 all new characters on the roster, its safer to bring back an old lesser known character than it is to introduce a bunch of new ones IMO

And unfortunately, this is something I don't think many of the fans, or even NRS realize. If painted in the right context, you can pretty much take any of the "shitty" characters from that era and develop them into something much more.

Of course, you'll still have a few of those fans who will just flat out refuse to like them because the hate has been embedded. That, or won't change their tune for fear of being called a hypocrite.

I've never particularly cared for Dairou, and I'll admit, have bashed him in my younger days, but I still think he could have become more than what he is now. In the eyes of the fans anyway. Same for all those other "shitty" or "boring" characters from that era.

Charlie may not be as well known to the layman as Guile but within the SF community he's arguably more well-liked.

I don't understand how even if he were super obscure, this constitutes as "risks". The other three characters (2 confirmed, 1 hinted) are in a massive amount of SF games.

Okay, so I got bitch-slapped down a few months back for pointing out that Capcom were taking a few risks on the SFV roster. A legitimate leak source is now pointing out that this is the full SF5 roster:

Already shown:

Ryu
Chun Li
Nash
Bison
Cammy
Birdie

Still to come:

Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)

Eagle
Ken
Akuma
Si-won (NEW)
Karin
Dhalsim
Sabrina (NEW)
Urien
Lucia (NEW)
Juri
Sakura
Alex
Guile
Zephyr (NEW)
Akira: (From Rival Schools)
Vega

For me, the final cast is still the greatest disappointment in MKX. We had a total of 16 characters return from MK9 and just 2 returnees from the wider MK-verse.

If this list proves correct - and there few doubters in the SF community, Capcom is taking a HUGE gamble by returning just 11 characters from SF4 (bear in mind that final cast had over 40 characters). There are 3 newbies and the rest of the cast draws from some of the more obscure picks in SF history, most haven't been in a fighting game for over 10 years!!

I thought it was pretty clear Capcom were taking risks when they debuted Nash - of all characters - third but got roasted here on MKO. And good on them!!

How do you feel about the MKX/SF5 cast now? I'm still gutted NRS took the lazy option. No Fujin is still pretty raw and a slap in the face to every MK fan. Look at the surprise popularity of Tanya!!

Reiko, Fujin, Havik - some of these faces should have been in this cast.

Fujin is the Martian Manhunter of MK, he will be sold as dlc separately.
Personally I'd love to have Sareena and Havik back, but they will be mk11 main returnees.

Now, instead of "risks" about returning characters, what about the new ones?

Erron Black and Takeda have been well received, Cassie and Kung Jin are on par. D'Vorah is awesome and despite his look Kotal Kahn is very interesting.

Only Jacquie wasn't well received, Ferra/Torr have a
Lot of unused potential.

Overall the new additions in the roster are great.

What about Street Fighter newer characters?

Hakan. My god, he is Kobra level....

Different strokes maybe, but I absolutely adore Hakan. The oil mechanic is really interesting, and his design is beast. The only thing I would change is the mini-domes on his hair. That's it. His moves are awesome. His design is awesome. His wife is awesome.

haha I like to get descriptive sometimes! Idk why I dislike it as much as I do, I find it very unappealing. Gameplay is slow, presentation is sub par, and the roster , oh man! People ripped MKX for their roster (justifiable) Street fighter characters are just bland, nothing jumps off the page when you look at them or read their bios. Perfect comparison is Dairou, most will consider him a throwaway character from the 3d era, but his backstory is incredible! All of MKs "throwaway" characters except Mokap and meat will likely be revamped and remastered in future installments. The main reason I don't like it is the cartoony vibe it has. For fighting games I either want realistic (tekken, fight night champion) or over the top HFS that just happend which is the glory of MK grin
