I always thought he is one of best, original, different and cool characters of the series. He's looks are great, the stripes and all are really cool.
He's special moves are also fantastic. The uprising/ downrising fireballs, The kick.
With MKDA/MKD/MKA crappy enginge it was impossible to implement any capoera or any other style fitting to Kai. With MK8 new (and hopefully good) engine great stuff can be done to him.
MK8 is a chance to flush out all the old characters who really have no where to go. Kai is a really cool character that can really evolve and become a popular cool and unique. Both in terms of story and moves.

Yes most definitely Kai is an interesting character. I love the way he projects hes fireballs. What with the Unreal 3 engine and all it should be a great great thing.
Yes, I would also like to see him return. He's one of my favorite characters, and I don't think his story has been explored well enough yet. His MK: Armageddon ending seems to hint that he is a prophet of sorts, being able to meditate and see past and future events, I think that could be a great help to the new heroes. He might be able to for see a new threat that is coming and warn the others. I see him as allying with Kung Lao and Fujin to stop their old allies Liu and Raiden. He could take Raiden's staff in memory of what he once stood for.
I wish that if they bring him back, they make him stronger gameplay wise. He was the worst character in MK4, and one of the worst in MK:A. I liked his gameplay, and it felt more fun in MK:A, but it suffered because he had no good mids, both his styles were bad, and his specials were too slow. I would love to see him with a Capoeira-based style that involved a lot of low hitting attacks, combos, takedowns, and sweeps. I would like to see him use Raiden's staff as a weapon, or the Spiked Club which was cool tool.

I'm going to be honest
I am really not that interested in seeing Kai in future MK games.
Kai might have had potential to replace Lui in being the next champion of earthrelm, but really I doubt the MK team would do that because they probably want a new character to take the lead for symplicity ( meaning so that new comers would not have to look up the characters history and it would be this generations MK "hero") and for the sake of "bringing as much new to this game".

Here's exactly the argument for a fewer amount of characters.

I was never a fan of Kai's. To tell you the truth, he did have a cool moveset. I also like his appearence in MKA, way better than MK4. Overall, I don't see him returning at all, but if he does I don't think that he would be the one to replace Liu Kang. He just doesn't have that status of becoming the "hero" type. Someone really should make a *sticky* about wanting characters back in MK8. It'd be a place where whoever wants a certain character to return, that would be the place to post. Certainly if there are gonna be multiple threads for different characters.

I like him alot...
But I like him mainly because he's not "the sterotype". I also would like to see him grow into the "main hero" role, and I think if they don't use him in some way similar would be a huge waste.
I don't really care to see him with "only" capoeira. Though, I don't mind hues of that style within the way he fights, I just don't wanna see "another one of those". I'd go for a mix between capoeira and whatever Tony Jaa's style is. I also liked how he would fight on his hands in Mk4...with his feet. i think that would be crazy to see Mk style with the new graphics.
Far as his story, there's almost too much potential there for him to be an extremely likable character that sticks around for a while. Just because, they haven't done much of anything with him so far...and yea, it'd be cool to see what happened with Raiden giving him the staff.
His MkA ending was one of the better, more sensible ones. But again, it's likely just because there's not been alot done with him up to this point. So they basically could have gone almost any way with him and it could have worked out. eh..

There are issues surrounding Jax, but as it is right now, I'd still prefer Kai over Jax or Darrius 10:1. Especially Darrius, I despise the character, even though some of his stuff was cool.

I can understand why people like Kai, but he's never really been for me. I never understood how he could just pop out of nowhere and be considered a good fighter. I mean, within the terms of the story. Why wasn't he helping to fight Shao Kahn during the invasion of Earthrealm? I guess he was "finding himself" or whatever, but it just made him seem whiny to me.
More thought really needed to go into his story, I think. He'd have been way better off if he was Edenia's answer to Liu Kang, or something. Maybe develop a bit of a rivalry with Liu Kang over Kitana's love? But it's a bit too late to retcon him that much.
They really made a mistake by not making him and Fujin the main protagonists in MK:DA, instead of Kung Lao and Raiden. Nothing against the hat-wearers, or anything, but Raiden seemed poised to retire after MK4, finally being accepted into the Elder Gods. Kung Lao also seemed like he was meant to die in MK3, and provide Liu Kang with the motivation he needed to actually kill Shao Kahn this time.
I like Kung Lao and Raiden well enough, but it just seemed that they were characters that were meant to be stepping aside for newer ones. Kai with Raiden's staff and Fujin as Protector of Earthrealm. We didn't really see either again.

kai was alright, there are charecters with more potential though

Yeah, just re-iterating: Kai should have been in the Kung Lao role in MK:DA. I think the whole post-MK3 arc really could have been done a lot better, and moved in better directions.

I've never seen that picture before. That's the type of stuff I'm looking for in Kai. Just great.
Now lets talk MKA. Am I the only thinks Kai's primary MKA appearance is utterly horrible? I mean come on, what's up with all that bulky shit. It looks like he had a look through Jarek's wardrobe. It totally doesn't suit his character.
Story wise, I see lots and lots of potential:
Like 151 said, what happened with Raiden giving him the the thunder staff. According to Raiden, It can show one the way the way to immortality. Now that one powerful weapon. It's definitely up there with the Shinnok's Amulet.
When he finally does find him self, what will that self be like?
Kai is searching for what his true self is really like right, what if that self is not good but instead evil. As a matter of fact, if that were to happen, he'd be the first MK character to do that.
Like I said lots of potential.
---
Though Jax is a stereotype, I still think he's an O.K. character. Darrius on the other hand is utterly useless. The only thing cool about him is his weapon. His alternate costume was... Words can't describe it.

I like Kai a lot but there's nothing that tells me he should be the next hero, I just don't see it.

I actually liked it alot. But the Hung Goatee made him seem really old.

I was never greatly interested in Kai. I always preferred Reiko.

I liked Kai until I saw him in MKA (that game just killed a lot of characters for me).
I like his new special moves, but I like MK4 a lot better.
