i understand ur point of view but Ed Boon said Iconic characters. Quan Chi is not very iconic apparently. They're looking for characters that were in multiple games and other media.

Reptile = MK1, MK2, MK4, MK5, MK7, Shaolin Monks, Unchained.
Kung Lao = MK2, MK3, MK Gold, MK5, MK7, Shaolin Monks, Unchained.
Mileena = MK2, MK Gold, MK6, MK7, Shaolin Monks, Unchained.

Quan Chi = MK4, MK5, MK7, Shaolin Monks, MKTE, Defenders of the Realm, MK Conquest

Other media much? Your argument is full of holes. The MK team clearly like Quan Chi a lot to put him in a game (MKSM) that many wouldn't have thought he had anything to do with. Plus he and Shang Tsung did things none of the other crummy villains (like Reptile and Mileena) ever did. Kill a hero. I like Reptile, but he's just never done anything of importance. Is he really that iconic outside of the main MK fanbase? Would a casual gaming fan really know him above Quan Chi? I would say that's a debate.

Reptile was te first true hidden character in a fighting game. People know who he is. Quan Chi? Not so much.

And if we're playing this game....

Reptile: MK1, MK2, UMK3, MKT, MK4, MK5, MKTE, MK7, MKSM, Defenders of the Realm, Mortal Kombat movies

Quan chi: MKMSZ, MK4, MK5, MK7, Defenders of the realm, conquest.

I doubt either of them are getting in, I'd rather see Cage, Mileena, Baraka, or Kung Lao.

Wonder Woman and Raiden were basically confirmed from the word "go." So no surprise there. Deathstroke is a nice surprise. Kano... hmmm. Well, I have to admit I'm a bit shocked by that. Not that I dislike the character or anything (like I've said before, I could take or leave him. Kinda neutral when it comes to him.) Meh..it could be cool. We'll see.

I wonder though, is he gonna fight with the knives instead of his fists? Cause that would be cool. I thought from the beginning that any character who heavily relies on weapons normally (Mileena, Baraka etc etc..) should fight with their weapons as their style. It keeps them in character.

For what it's worth, Quan Chi was long attached to be the lead villain in a third film. It's hard to disagree with whoever it was, [~Crow~], that pointed out the MK team clearly have a liking for Quan Chi.

You've got to think he'll be there for a guest appearance, at the very least.

I feel a little better about Kano being in now than I did earlier...but what ThePredator151 said: They gotta give him a fresh, cool new look, perhaps modeled off Trevor Goddard from MK1.

One of the problems I have with Kano is not his story role or character, but his appearance. In every game he's appeared in, his outfit always seems thrown together and uninspired.

The only other character I feel HAS to be in is Mileena...from there it's take your pick: Reptile, Cage, Kung Lao...

Raiden looks awesome. Kano looks good too. I REALLY hope the next character is Reptile. He should really be in there. But Kung Lao is a big character too. confused

Let's see....

Raiden: I'm not surprised that he's in, and I'm glad he made it. He looks ok, It's not his best look, imo.

Kano: I understand why they chose him, and I bet he's one of the characters that they argued about when choosing the MK side of the roster. I'm personally not happy with this choice as I don't really like Kano much at all. I would have much preferred other characters such as Mileena, Shao Kahn and even ones like Sindel and Baraka.

Wonder Woman: This was definitely not a surprise and a necessary choice, imo. I don't like her render that much, but the background is pretty good.

Deathstroke: He's an interesting choice and not a bad one either. I'd like to see how he turns out.

Kano gives me the conclusion that Johnny Cage will be a playable character.

It's a shame because I'd rather have Mileena, Reptile, and Kung Lao.

This whole debate on iconic, just seems to be a coverup word for people who want characters they favor more. What surprised me is how so many people are dissapointed to see Kano, only to say they would rather have someone less deserving and "iconic" instead. I don't care who you like, anyone who doesn't appreciate the classics and fails to get that feeling of nostalgia when it comes to the characters being chosen for this game, obviously didn't start playing MK until around MK3 +. Anybody who started playing MK, with MK1, should be estatic with the characters in this game. We have the originals, the classics, and quite possibly the "faces" of MK throughout all MK media created.

My favorite character is Cyrax. He has been my favorite since MK3 and on, but you don't see me campaigning and arguing that he should be in the game. I am 100% satisfied with the characters chosen so far in this game, from both MK and DC rosters. Think about it. When you ask anyone what characters represent MK in its prime (MK1-MK3)...the list will almost always start out with MK1 characters being said first, then unto MK2, then MK3 etc.

The characters that have been chosen have been in since the first 2 games, and have been in multiple games since. Beyond just games though, they also have been in the MK movies, MK comics, MK cartoon, on MK merchandise...etc. The characters from MK1-MK2 ARE MK. Sure, they're are more characters from later games that made quite a big impact on MK, and can be viewed as "iconic", but thats only to diehard MK fans. So those asking for Mileena, she probobly won't be included. Why? Not because she isn't important enough, or "iconic" enough, but simply because people outside of your regular MK fan, wouldn't know who she is. Plus, they're are still characters that are going to be higher up on the selection list that still haven't been announced yet. Think of it as a game of dodgeball when you are picking your team, and your job is to pick 11 of the most recognized MK characters, they're are still a couple that would be picked before her. This is how I see the remaining chances:

Johnny Cage
Kung Lao
Reptile
Baraka
Mileena
Noob Saibot
Smoke

Those are the remaining characters from MK1-MK2 that have not been picked. I would say Johnny Cage and Kung Lao have the best chances of being the last two, with the rest being first in line for possible future DL content candidates. If I had to pick one character who would possibly picked instead of Cage or Lao, I would say either Reptile or Baraka have the best chances, with Reptile having the better chances of the two.

All of this is just my own opinion of course.

So, that leaves Reptile, Kung Lao, and Mileena. All playing a prominant role in the series during the MK2 - MK3 timeline.

The whole "between MK2 & MK3" thing was just meant to be a frame of reference...not something to be taken literally. Johnny Cage could definitely be in it, as could later characters like Quan Chi....whom, despite not being as "iconic" as some of the other sacred cows, is one of MK's main villains.

Says who?
It certainly seems literal at the moment. No characters that first appeared in MK3 are in the list yet. Only those in MK1/MK2. So I am taking it in a literal way.

I agree with immortaldestiny that Cage is probably dead at the time so he won't be included. MK3+ characters won't be included because it's before their time.

Kano is a great choice for the game, and you know.. I wouldn't be surprised if he had something to do with the "cataclysmic" event that takes place for the 2 worlds to collide.

According to the story, Johnny Cage was killed in MK2 - MK3 storyline. It also said that his soul could not transfer to the Heavens because of the merger of Outworld and Earthrealm during Kahn's invasion and he was forced back into his own body and made his return in MK4.

With that in mind, possibly the events that collided the DC world with the MK world are another reason that johnny's soul could not reach the Heavens. Of course, i know this game isn't cannon but they could work that scenerio into the game's mythology. Thereby explaining JOhnny Cage's disappearance from MK vs. DC.

I kind of agree with you and others on that. If people of the casual gaming crowd were asked to name characters from MK, they would probably list Everyone from MK 1 and 2 maybe 3 and might be a few from MK4-present.

I disagree. Like you just said the characters from MK 1 and MK2 are MK. Mileena debuted in MK2. She is an Icon of the series. Sure some casual gamers may not know her by name, but they can definitely remember the chick in purple who debuted with the chick with the fans.

Scorpion and Sub-Zero are the male mascots of the series, Kitana and Mileena are the female mascots. Besides everyone's favorite blue and yellow ninja, she was one of the characters used to promote MK: Deception along side Baraka. Why? Because Mileena is recognizable outside the die hard MK fan base.

Granted, I'd love to have Mileena in the game, but she might be outmatched because of Johnny Cage and Reptile. Johnny Cage is the dude who punches people in the nuts, and Reptile completes the original ninja trio of Scorpion and Subzero. And they were both in MK1. They might have a larger fan base and may be more popular than Mileena in the general gaming population, but that doesn't mean that casual gamers don't know who she is.

And on a side note, I think that MK3 characters could be considered classic and Iconic too. I'm sure people would remember that 'lady who screams loud and whips people with her hair' and that 'yellow robot dude'.

Also:

Raiden and Wonder Woman, yay. We all knew because everyone who's played or heard of Mortal Kombat knows who Raiden is, and Wonder Woman the female icon of DC.

Kano, meh. Jax, meh. DeathStroke/Slade, I don't know much about him since I've never heard of him or seen him outside of the Teen Titans cartoon, but he looks cool. Green Lantern, he's awesome.

Still, the moment Kitana was confirmed, I was sold over anyway into getting this game. That image of her cutting Superman with her fans...it just brings a tear of joy to my eye.

I really feel like there's an argument to be made for Quan Chi very specifically representing a shift in the MK asthetic. I think he's very iconic to the 'modern' era of Mortal Kombat, arguably the face of this change!
In a game that, on the surface, is a fairly arbitrary collection of recognisable and vaguely suitable characters, I think there's a real argument for Quan Chi. There's arguments for other characters that might keep him out, but I think that importance is definitely there.

Actually, he was in heaven prior to MK4 (having past once Kahn's invasion was thwarted), and was allowed to return under the weighty circumstances of Shinnok's attacks. Of course, that doesn't matter because the game isn't thematically attached to any specific period, despite a narrow focus for drafting ideas.

I'm now sold.

From the footage I've been watching on Gametrailers.com of the 2D centric gameplay and interviews, to them now including my favourite DC character Villain/Anti-hero Deathstroke the Terminator (thank you for not tagging him "Slade"), whom I had a certainty they would not include at all, plus his blue/orange outfit from the books?...this game's getting a pre-order wherever it's available at near me.

Here's a better look at the character for those unfamiliar with him:

[edited with a different pic of him vs flash]
And Anyone who can beat the hell out of the Batman deserves to be in the game.

Yes, "Slade Wilson" is probably the best character introduced so far from DC's side.

Now bring on Lobo! He was basically tailor made for MK's over-the-top violence and blood!

Yeah, I'd like to see DC's "Wolverine" too. Lobo would be cool with his hook chain.
On the MK side I'd like to see Sektor, but odds are against that initially at least.

The thing we all are forgetting is that they could easily add a ton of characters to be downloadable later on for free or pay (odds are the latter) and everyone goes home happy. grin

Awesome, I would've expected two new characters...not 4 so this is a good surprise!

Finally Raiden and WW are announced. Awesome, and they looke pretty good too. Although I wish I could see Raiden's costume more clearly.

Kano was quite a surprise imo. I knew he was iconic but I was expecting Reptile to be announced. Anyway, I think he's a good character for the game considering he was in the first MK. Not to mention, the render of his kinda looks like Trevor Goddard's look doesn't it?

Great to see Deathstroke. I kinda knew with the ninja villian hint from Kotaku that he'd be one of the characters to make it in the game (even though he isn't really a ninja). But still, he looks pretty awesome and I can't wait to fight as him.

Finally two of the most likely characters have been announced and its even better...Raiden back in his 'classic' blue and white. Figured he would be since this is suppose to take place before he went dark.

Kano as much as I don't like him, he is one of those characters whose name you hear and think 'Mortal Kombat.'

Let's see...of the originals we got Kano, Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Shang Tsung and Raiden confirmed. Guess that leaves either Goro and/or Johnny left out in the cold.

Which is kinda funny since Johnny was based off of a certain actor that was in the movie that the original MK game was gonna be based off of but the rights didn't go through so instead of the hero they made him the clown.
