MKA was not the turning point point for the series, MKDC will be. Boon has alot of balls to ride his baby on a potential one way ticket to the point of no return. People dont like to see their favorite series' change this dramatically. Let's hope the masses dont give up on Mortal Kombat after seeing this leap of faith. Godspeed.

yeah I agree with Bezou. the only way to save the franchise would for the next MK to be phenominally great.

Yea, doesn't look good right now..

I still remember when I first looked at a Game Informer magazine and seeing MKDA, but I dont remember reading anything about the gameplay. This one Boon is more than ecstatic about the new fighting feature in the game. I really think this one will be fuckin awesome once they show new, full length gameplay.
But still think it would of been better just MK8 with the same fighting mechanic (which it would of).

If this fails and they say their going back to their roots again i'm going to laugh.
I wonder if more DC fans would by this game or MK fans.

It'll make, once it hits shelves

I think that this game has the potential to sell well, but the reviews have to be there. I think that even hardcore MK fans will be curious enough to buy, despite how jaded they/we are right now. But not if this game gets 5/10 or 6/10.
As for making or breaking the series? Nah. If the game gets bad reviews and it tanks sales-wise, then the MK team will realize that this was a misstep. However, I do think that if they come back with an MK8 and it rocks, people will consider it to be a rise from the ashes type of accomplishment.
If MK vs DC bombs, then it'll put the MK franchise further out of the public eye, further into that category of "irrelevant old games in the past" etc. But I don't think that it would "kill" the franchise.
All that said, I think this is a mistake. People wanted something different for MK (a new story with new characters and oh, I dunno, top notch, next gen quality gameplay perhaps????), not different from MK (a versus game, or add ons to the gameplay system that started showing signs of aging even back when MK:D failed to grow the combat system).
I'll say this, the trailer showed alot of recycled animations. If the gameplay isn't drastically different than in the past, and they're basically taking DC characters and putting them into a last gen MK game with gussied up graphics, than this game will be seen, even by MK fans, as the absolute low point of this once proud franchise.
The gameplay has been the key sticking point ever since MK abandoned what worked in 2D and ripped off KI's dial a combo system for MK3. MK:DA was extremely promising, but MK:D was a huge step back and MK:A was basically a stripped down game with a fun, albeit odd air juggle system. If the MK team can't go away from that whole system entirely, than I don't even know why they're bothering.
Gameplay is the single most important aspect if a next gen fighter is to be successful in a market that doesn't seem to be in much need of fighting games. If this game isn't fun... If it's just "wow look! Superman's fighting Sub Zero!" than it will fail miserably.

I haven't thought about it, but if MKvDC flops then yeah, this franchise is rooted. Midway would be hard pressed to make a comeback from something like that I think. I think they'd try, but it'd be a big ask to get the public excited about a Mortal Kombat game again for a while.
I don't have too strong of an option about making or breaking the franchise. MK has been steadily been producing games for years. I think the Mk fans are just a tad on edge.
I just wanted to add that with the new batman movie comming out and more importantly... LEGO batman! I think that should help with sales a bit. And I do think Mortal Kombat is rather iconic among gamers.

MK3 didn't rip off KI, it's limited in MK and works very differently. Had damage protection and different properties. If anything KI ripped off MK and SF with their overall "game gimmick" dark with cheesy version of MK fatalities and having similar specials to SF games....Jago screams Ryu and Ken....

If this game does flop, I can imagine we might get ANTOHER Mortal Kombat drought like we did with between MK4 and MK Deadly Alliance
The combo's were nice in MK 3, but it didn't work as good as in KI IMO. It only came to justice with certain characters. Further, MK didn't rip it tottaly off from KI, but it wasn't like
"WOW MK has something called combo's now!!!"
Still it was a real nice addition that could've worked out better.

BREAK
It has the potential to be a huge success, or a roaring failure, all depending on how they work the gameplay, as I see it. It is an interesting concept that I, as a fan of both MK and DC since a young age, have hope for it. New graphics, new gameplay, it can work, as long as the MK team really puts their all behind it, and really works out that fighting engine. *also, I don't see why everyone's so worried about violence, look at Risk, who got both his arms ripped off by Superboy Prime in two different events, one last summer/fall. Hard Teen rating can work for brutality, and it did for the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre too.*

the game has potential but looking back on midway's record I think this game will definitely break the franchise. the graphics are horrible compared to other fighting games released and future releases on next-gen.. yeh, Soul calibur 4 will rock.

I haven't seen anything yet that makes me believe MK vs DC is going to be any better than what Deadly Alliance was to fans. And I'm not talking about all the 9 year olds out there that are so easily pleased with any piece of shit game they play. I can't take their opinions seriously enough to consider their reviews/critiques on the game.
The franchise is broken, and has been that way for a while now. You ask me, MKA killed it.
Boon's little spiel about being excited for the "new" fighting engine? Throw-away comment to try and appears the fans who want a decent fighting system. There'll be twenty things wrong with it.
The very fact that the game's main attraction is a showdown against DC heroes proves they're sticking with their strategy: throw in something big and flashy (mini-games, krypt, konquest mode) to make the package seem more appealing, whilst consistently ignoring, - or quick-patching - the gameplay's basic flaws.
Hasn't been a truly decent MK fighting game in years. Never will be again. They should either just throw in the towel and let the series go the way of the dodo, or hand it over to some other company.
SFIV's going to pee all over this one so bad it'll hurt. Hurt people's sides. You know, from all the side-splitting laughter.

Don't be quick to judge, ^^ I know many SF fans that hate SF4 already just like some MK fans hate this idea....SF4 is nothing more then SFII revamped with cell shaded graphics which look alright btw, nothing to go ape about honestly.
This game will not be peed on, I already know several fans that "hated this idea" initially that are liking it now that we're actually seeing more of the game. Besides, SF isn't nearly as "great" as it once was same as MK in that sense.
But to each his own, SF 4 is doing what Midway did with MKD with the characters, going "down the nostalgia route" so for that reason alone it'll attract SOME fans, but not all. The thing with MK vs. DC is that it'll attract the "casual/curious gamer" as well as DC fans because let's face it, DC has been beyond dead in the video game world until now....what I will be laughing at are the "haters" or doubters once this game sells bigtime and owns.

SF isn't that great IMO. It stopped being fun after the third version of SF2. {yeah like they expect you to keep buying the same game over and over again}
SF4 is going to probably be just like every other SF game with some 3D and possibly less annoying voices. Then again this is just what I think and since I've yet to see anything about it this could change.
I just don't get why some people lose their collective shit over SF.
