I'm shocked that Liu Kang is getting better recieved than Jax. I don't understand what is all the complaining is about, well nobody's complaining but they act like having Jax in is so bad. Believe it or not, Jax is iconic, yeah because he's the first black character, thats the only reason and thats good enough for me.
Ok, I don't wanna complain about people complaining, but lets just let this be a thread where people post why they are or are not happy for Jax's inclusion.

I don't mind Jax in the game. He's not the best but not the worst either. I'd figure people would be more pissed about Captain Marvel being in the game than Jax. At least Jax is unique.

He's a terrible character. There could have been the inclusion of Mileena, Reptile, Baraka, or even Kung Lao, but instead we get Jax, who quite honestly is just the token black guy. He's a cop out and it's really annoying that they're including him. Him and Superman are going to share the ground pound as well.
i'm happy jax is in also. i don't think it has anything to do with him being black though. or atleast i don't think it's the main reason for his iconic status or inclusion in this game.
how is jax a token black guy? especially in a fictional world where race isn't even a major concern. there are four armed monsters for christ sake.

Well, picking between Liu and Jax (for me) is like choosing between a punch in the left ear or the right ear, but I don't hate either of them. I just wanted those slots open for... let us say, for the moment at least, different characters.
But focusing on Jax, he's just not that interesting. We don't need two military characters, although I can see why doing so can be good. New characters are often added to develop old ones. We learned more about Ermac through Kenshi. We learned more about Subzero through Smoke. But after the debut, the characters ought to launch into their own thread. Jax hasn't contributed a lot, and frankly, none of this designs have ever impressed me. I can't even look directly at his MKDA costume without squinting. It isn't ugly, but why so much shit? How did he go from pants + no shirt to having all that shit on him? He looks like he's dressed for an accentric fashion show.
Kai, on the other hand, is black character that doesn't adhere to stereotypes, has a great design, and a rather interesting story.
Is Jax iconic? Well, it's hard to say, but I'm leaning towards yes. He was in both films, debuted in the most nostalgic addition of MK to date, and many casual MK fans could probably recognize him.
But as I've said a thousand times, and forgive me if i've become annoying: Iconicness is a shit-horrible standard. The people buying this game are most likely already fans of one franchise or the other!

I must say I agree. I really think they should go by who matches who rather than iconicness. I mean Havik and Joker are perfect rivals, but I higly doubt the last three spots are for him.

And Havik is a great character, by far my favorite new addition to the contemporary MK games. Although I didn't care for his story attachment to Kabal. I liked Kabal better as the moral vigilante with a respirator. But I would have lost my load if I saw Havik announced (and I'm sure his story existence predates MK1. He's probably old as fuck).
But we're all condemned to this crappy pattern:
Series Reintroduction: Game has mostly MK1 characters; story is driven by "icons."
Nostalgic Sequel: Game uses the foundation of previous installment; plays around with fan response and brings back some happy obscurities, the majority being charactes and stages.
Massive fan-fuckup: the current generation of consoles is close to expiration; no one is interested in making a new graphic or gameplay engine; they base most of the design off fan response, but since fan ideas aren't coherent (we want a good story, but we also want every character in the game), we get a weak product.

I just don't like all the stupid stereotypes, and the fact that, regardless of the now, "1000" some odd war games coming out in the last 10yeas, they STILL refuse to underscore SOLDIER. There's more than ample examples of what a soldier looks, performs, and speaks like now. What's the problem?
Jax is supposed to almost never speak, but to compensate that, his actions should be extremely intelligent. Like watching a Lion or something hunt prey.
He's supposed to be objective oriented, and when he does say something, that generic "Yes Sir" mentality does not apply. Special Forces agents generally, take the mission. But after that, they then pretty much do whatever the fuck they want! Haha.. Model his personality after Wesley Snipes, Michael Jai White, and like Silvester Stalone in the Universal Soldier//Demolition Man movies or something. Or the soldiers in the first couple Predator movies. "We were soldiers", or any other good military movies. sheez man..lol
He's there to cover Sonya. They need to play more Call of Duty, or Tom Clancy games. Hell, mix some of the personality that Battlefield Bad Company has in it's soldiers. That would work beautifully.
Controversial statement:
In MK3-T the bionic arms were fine. But from my perspective, that was only so because they just painted over the guys arms. Looked like his arms were completely replaced instead of augmented. That, and the Terminator was still really prevalent back then.
Now though? Get those ridiculous things off that SOLDIER, give him a gun, and an abrasive, objective oriented, over protective mentality.
And if, like it looks, that they have put the bionic arms back on him, NO GUNS. His arms are the "guns", in a couple of manners of speaking. Use those instead of the over obsessed stereotypical "big huge black guy, with all the power in the world, AND super-technology ON HIM, yet still needs a gun" ?!? Gotta be kidding me..
So, let me get this straight. He's a member of the most respected facet of the U.S. Military.....and he's insecure and doubts his own abilities? lmao! You don't get there with those problems...and if you do, your personality is so sheilded and obscure in comparisons to your actions it doesn't make any sense that you could be those things + high ranked military officer.
That doesn't represent any fighter, let alone "black people" correctly.
So anyway, since they insisted on having him in there, they at least have to make him over right. Until I find out otherwise, I'll continue to like Kai and Jade much better than him.

I personally don't "hate" Jax. I just feel that since Sonya's already in there(very similar kind of character Special Forces etc)no need for Jax in a game like this particularly. I felt they could have put someone else in there taken that spot. My opinion. I'll probably get used to him though..maybe.

Bah,i dont have any problem with Jax making the cut even if he's not so "iconic"....worst was when in MK:A every idiot was crying about MEAT not being in the game.

I pretty much agree with you(and thats rare, lol) but I think maybe they should try and have Jax go without the arms for atleast one game. I mean I kinda want Jax to be like you said, strong, firm and brave but I also want him to be a little funny. But not Stereotypical though, not the usual "funny black guy".
MKflegened, I agree, but I hope the last three spots belong to Raiden,Mileena and Shao Kahn, maybe two more mk characters will be hidden so Jade and maybe that "mash-up" villain.

I don't like how the MK team make him sound like the stereotypical gangster with all that ebonic sounding shit. It's caused him to become more of a joke character now than he was in MK2. I don't take his character seriously anymore. I just don't. And this is coming from a half black person, and my black friend would agree with me. He's just nothing special anymore.

Yep, I was for sure Baraka would've gotten in over Jax. A short list?
Baraka
Jonny Cage
Kung Lao
Sindel
Mileena
Sareena - even though she's not iconic or whatever.

Yeah, well I'd much rather have Ermac or Smoke personally even Cyrax. Kabal I'd also like but since Flash is in there with the similar moves I'm sure that's why Kabal's not in this, Baraka...ehhh he's alright, No Kenshi...Ermac is much better lol.
Sareena is cool but has no iconic, staying or much fan power.
Sindel would be cool, Sheeva in different.

i don't think it's fair for him to go from military hero to african american stereotype just based on his portrayal in one game. i mean him saying oh yeah and wearing a dragon medallion is so small.
Wait. I think people are forgetting the BIGGEST reason Jax isn't quite a good choice, why he became a joke character, and why he's "iconic" for all the wrong reasons.
Special Forces
MK: Special Forces. Need I say more? I think the video speaks for itself.

Ow.
A big buff powerful black guy that's dressed up like an O.G. ("Original Gangster" for those who don't know) and has a gun.
It doesn't get anymore stereotypical than that. But then again MK has it's fair share of non-stereotypical black chracters; Kai, Darrius, and whoever I didn't mention.
Is there something wrong with having one stereotyped character?
I mean come on, It's not like all the black characters are like him.
----------------------
I believe that there was a combination of events that led to the horrible reception Jax had at Comic-Con. It's the mixture of having a bad story over that past few games, looking like an O.G.(something that a lot of Americans hate with a passion), being chosen over MK characters that have much more fans, and of course him being revealed at a comic convention that probably had almost no MK fans.

If Jax is in it to add diversity, they should of just used the black Green Lantern.
I don't think of Jax as not necessary because Sonya is there, but I do think of him as the most boring of the boring 5 heros (Lui Kang, Sonya, Jax, Johnny, and Kung Lao) (And don't get me wrong I like all five of those guys).
I wish instead of a gun, they gave Jax that purple beam thing.
Lastly, Jax can still have his bionic arms and be a military hero. You can be the best of the best, but when Shao Kahn appears and these ninjas and everyone with all these inhuman special abilities, you need something that'll let you be able to compete. I kind of think the arms are what make Jax iconic.
