I'm all for this game, really I am. I've had hopes for this game even when everyone else began bitching about fatalities. But now that I see more gameplay I realize this game feels way too generic. I mean, Mortal Kombat always maintained a certain 70's kung fu movie meets death metal america feel to it. But this game looks WAY too polished for me to enjoy it all that much.
The roster doesn't excite me all that much either. I mean hell yeah we get classics but it's those random choices that get me all fired up. I can remember when they said Kabal and Sindel were returning for MKD, I was happy as hell. I really wish that alot of the characters were locked and were unannounced. It would have made for a much more exciting game. I pray that the game has a better feel to it when I play it but I do fear for the worst.

70s kung fu meets I wouldn't say "American Death Metal", but 70s kung fu meets 80s horror, action and sci fi was Mortal Kombat.
And it has been dying slowly.
MKSM brought it back in style, but with a half ass storyline.
MKDA, MKD, and MKA were a steady decline in this

It's alright that it feels very wrong for you, AngelOfTheFallen. Of course, it's not going to fully please all the MK fans, and that's understanding. I respect your decisions and I'm thrilled you managed to calmly and rationally type your reasons in a response I could read and understand completely, rather than screaming and uttering incoherently at the top of your lungs.

Haha! Love it!

Ahnka is gonna have a fit when he ( or she / it ) finds out he missed this opportunity... what a pleasant thought.
Anyway, staying on topic, Angel was talking about unannounced characters that would make the game more exciting etc. Who said there aren't unannounced characters? I heard somewhere that Jimmy Palmiotti might make the cut as a fighter, but that could have been a joke and I never really followed up on that. I'm sure there'll be some surprises that are currently unannounced, whether it's characters or something else
( hopefully 'Cooking with Scorpion... and Batman' or something funny ).
We'll be finding out in a few weeks anyway.

- Technical
I think what you may be keying in on, are some of the technical attributes in this games' mechanics that appear to be fixed as opposed to some of the previous games. You see, when things in the gameplay mechanism work right, the game performs more smoothly, and can appear to be more "polished". As you put it.
So, in a 3D game like this is, that's exactly what you want. Because it's a signification that things are working correctly in the mechanics. A.k.a., "The camera is moving around right, frames of animation react to when we push on buttons properly"....that sort of thing.
- Aesthetic
Secondly, I also think that you might be keying in on the fact that this games mechanic doesn't really have a great concept vested in the way it looks to play. There really is no "theme" that seems to be there besides "punches and kicks and special powers".
Stuff like that "70's Kung Fu" thematic quality you're talking about, is something that the older games sort of just had in them, right?
I can't vouch for them on this because we haven't played it yet but, that could be because they weren't really concerned with a concept for the way fighting should look. It could be that they were more concentrated on "how fighting works right in a 3D environment" with this game.
==
If it's beyond those things, I dunno how to answer your concern. But that's two different perspectives that I've found on "how fans look at gameplay" in MK.
It's either from a technical standpoint, or from a aesthetic standpoint.
hope that helps.

It's mainly an aesthetic complaint, each game had it's own mojo. I mean MK1, 2, and MKD were my favorites because of their overall feel. But this new game doesn't have a specific feel to it, just a bland game. It doesn't feel like Midway made it but maybe EA on a bad day. I hope I'm wrong once I play it but this doesn't look all that great to me. As far as unannounced characters go, they've shown a full roster character selection screen, I don't think that they'll come up with a last minute touch up. But if they do manage to do so, I'd be the happiest fan alive. Only time will tell but if I am right then I do hope that Boon & Co. learn a lesson from the game.

mk-forever you are most certainly not starting out on the right foot. You're going to ruin every discussion? I think you need to read over the MKO rules and guidelines before you post any further so that you will avoid a ban. I can hope you were joking, if not, I find your immature behavior disturbing.

That famous MK "70's Kung Fu aesthetic" was always created by the arenas and the music more than anything else.
The problem with this game, thus, is that because of the addition of the superheroes, we're now mostly hearing epic superhero orchestral music, and seeing DC stages like Metropolis and Gotham (and may I say that the two most heavily seen MK stages, the Graveyard and Hell, look just terribly bland and un-MK-like).
I think the stage that so far best captures the MK feel is, unfortunately, the Half-Themyscira, Half-Shang Tsung's Island stage. (Because the Shang's island half has pagodas and a big gong and all that classic MK type stuff)
That said, I'm still looking forward to the game 100% because the feel isn't so important to me in a non-canon game, all I care about is how accurate the characters are to their old MK2 and 3 selves.
Because I loved DA and Deception, but was always extremely disappointed by the imperfections like Johnny's Shadow Kick not having actual shadows, or Sonya not having her Leg Grab, or Raiden not having the Flying Tackle and Teleport until after he became dark and was no longer "really" Raiden. (Don't get me wrong, I like Dark Raiden's storyline...he just looks so wrong in those colors. Maybe if it was black and blue...What the f*ck does the color red have to do with lightning?)
So now that all the characters' moves are there and look right, I am stoked for an MK game that will feel like the MK of old. Especially knowing that the next REAL MK game will be using this one's engine.

OK, MK is always generic
Starting from MK1 to MK4 all characters have the same normal moves. And We liked that way.
MKDA and MKD were a step in the right direction. With the fighting styles, things were less generic, because every fighter had own move sets.
I really like the idea of the fighting styles and I was hoping that Midway expands that idea in future games, with different movements, better motion capture, things more real.
Add more special moves, specially the classics and we have a real game.
Now the DC's Mortal Kombat. Sigh...
