I just watched the uncensored version of White Robe, t.A.T.u's new(ish) vid, and i am very, very disappointed..
SPOILER ALERT in case anyone hasnt seen the uncensored version of White Robe, seeing as it only came out like an hour ago...
The censored version was mainly focused on the final scene, where the pregnant Yulia, innocently dressed in her White Robe, was savagely shot right in the stomach by Lena, who was dressed like a WWII soldier. The video was about showing t.A.T.u's extreme, up-front view of abortion, and how no matter the intent, you are killing an innocent creature, and just because the creature hasn't yet been born, you are no different from those murderers from wars by killing it.
Just like in the Dangerous and Moving days where they focused on powerful messages (such as "Lyudi Invalidi" and being an "Obezyanka Nol") I thought that White Robe was a song about questioning whats right and whats wrong, about challenging something that many people consider wrong but never challenge themselves. I was expecting the uncensored version to show a more gruesome representation of Yulia being shot, being more focused on this scene and allowing people to realise just how disgusting a thing abortion is.
This new uncensored version, however, does nothing of the sort! I am really disappointed in it, and its not just cause my expectations were'nt fulfilled, but they completely spat/stepped,shat on their original idea.
The shooting scene is clouded with clips of people watching Yulia getting shot, drinking alcohol and laughing. Okay, this is a good idea, it emphasises the way in which people don't take aborion seriously. However, they just do it to excess, showing these shots until boredom. I swear, of the minute dedicated to this final shooting scene (which is already not enough time considering the video is 6 minutes in length and the whole point of the video is that one scene), most of it is taken up by showing people watching and not by the actual killing? They aren't focusing on the powerful message, but rather trying to fill in time to make the video as long as the very, very bad remix of the song they chose to use as opposed to the original track. They don't even show the actual shooting in the uncensored version, it is exactly the same as the censored one, the only reason why its considered uncensored is because of...
Sex! While I definitely do think that Yulia and especially Lena are very, very sexy women and usually I would definitely not mind seeing them naked hehe, the sex is taking over the powerful message the video was originally about. t.A.T.u were meant to have surpassed those days of faux lesbianism and selling sex, but now they are just going back to it. And over what? Over a sincerely powerful, deep message that is a real issue in modern society. Seriously.. wtf were they thinking?
The censored video was a good length at 3 minutes, it had the original track and the main focus was the last half - the shooting scene. It portrayed the main message about abortion and it was just sickening to see poor Yulia getting shot like that.
The new uncensored video takes away from Yulia's innocence by having her sticking her middle finger up and making her seem kinda rude and unlikeable, which weakens the final message. Furthermore, it is drawn out for 6 long frikken minutes and the music isn't even good because they used some lame remix. And worst of all, the "uncensored" didnt refer to the gore from the shooting scene, but rather to Yulia's shower scenes (with her boobs showing) and of Lena getting undressed and suggestively lying naked on her bed. Why stoop to Britney Spears' level? You had a good message, and the uncensored version SHOULD have shown Yulia getting shot in a violent way, making it more gruesome and shocking to make people think about abortion in such a gross way, rather than making people link abortion to sexy naked Russian women. Their songs used to be deep, meaningful, but this new video just makes me think of them as sell outs.
I'm still gonna buy Waste Management and am still eagerly awaiting the vid for 220, but I dunno.. I'm disappointed, i thought that t.A.T.u had gone past that.
