That would be a very bad thing. You see, even if the console wars as we know them are coming to an end, competition won't. And competition is extremely important when it comes to quality control.

It would be nice to have a system that plays all the different platform games...unfortunately; it would mean no more competition and higher prices since like TTT already stated there would be no competition and thus no reason to have competitive prices. They could just charge whatever they want since they would have a monopoly.

What do you mean "no more competition"? Look at TVs, DVD players, CD players, etc...

They are made by tons of different companies, have different prices/features, and cater to a variety of different media tastes. The competition is in the media the devices play.

I can picture a single type of console that comes out, that plays ALL the games. Different companes could make the consoles, and have different features, such as CD/DVD playback, multimedia support, home network support, etc. The games would be where the competition would lie.

Much like CDs and DVDs, games would be a universal medium that would play on any game console.

For example, Sony could still manufacture game consoles, much like they do with CD/DVD players, along with their brand of games (kinda like they do with their music and movie divisions). However, I could buy a panasonic game player and still be able to play Sony brand games, much like I can buy a Pioneer DVD player and play the Sony Pictures movie "Spiderman" on it

I can see that working while still being profitable to the game makers. Games ARE where the companies truly profit already.

You'd only really hit a hurdle when it comes time to evolve the technology. All the major companies would have to upgrade to take advantage of it in new hardware.

I want whatever the execs at Nintendo are smoking, because it must be really strong and wonderful, especially if they use it while making all of their products (making the N64 cartridge-based, the GCN controller, the Wii controller, the name "Wii"). I mean, if Nintendo's trying to be the laughing stock of the gaming world, they're doing a fine job at perfecting the technique. I love a few of the games that come from their drug-infected minds, but man, this is becoming ridiculous.

Apparently it's named Wii because it's representing how it's like... A gaming family or something. And they didn't call it We because the two i's in Wii look like the Wii controller.

Interesting name choice for Nintendo. Their justification, and explanation of the name is interesting. My main problem is mostly with the logo. It looks too similar to the "WiFi" logo. It would suck for Nintendo if Wi-Fi is trademarked, and the WiFi organization decides to sue Nintendo over logo similarities.

The PS3 and the xbox 360 don't sound to great either. But Really i don't think wii is such a bad name for nintendo new system it actually fits it, i think all the fuss everyone is making is for nothing. Remember it's the games the sell the system not the damn name this applies for all console systems.im still going to buy the system regardless of the name, i heard nights(the old game for the sega saturn) will be for nintendo wii the just a rumor though.

I was mentally prepared for a new name for the "Revolution", but not for the final name. Nintendo is a great company with great games; however, they have lost what is most important in this console fight: a competative spirit. They are content just to sit back and be an alternative system. They want to be different, not necessarily popular...

I remember when Nintendo owned. Sure, Sega paved the way for less censorship and more hardcore games, but Nintendo knew how to market and how to get the right exclusives. Street Fighter II on the Super NES, Super Metroid, and A Link to the Past (along with Mario) killed the Genesis, in my opinion. Back then, they were ruthless with the pretense of being family friendly. Now, they're the much maligned underdog.
Nintendo really doesn't "get" what people want anymore. Nintendo has become a company that makes games, systems, and peripherals, not so much for the public, but for themselves. They say that Wii will grow on people, like Google, Yahoo, or IPod, but, you see, THOSE AREN'T SYSTEMS! Even then, I think those names sound cooler than Wii.
I'm a Nintendo loyalist, but Wii just doesn't cut it for me. You simply can't use it in conversation as easily. They chose "Wii" cause it sounds like "we"? Well, that's the first mistake right there; "we" already has a definition while something like N64, XBox, Playstation, hell, even GameBoy created their own definitions.
Nintendo, God bless their souls, tries too hard to be different and not hard enough on being competative or popular. If they had anybody with a shell of common sense, the Super NES would have been less restricted, the N64 CD-based (with Sony, you dumbasses! You shouldn't have pissed 'em off!), the Gamecube sleeker (default black or silver) without the kiddie handle and WITH Online Play, better controllers, and the "Revolution" a high-end, competative system meant to crush the competition with its raw power, diverse gameplay options, and mass appeal. As it is, everything about the "Wii" is dividing people, NOT bringing them together, as their marketing claims its trying to do. The controller is hit-or-miss; the power of the system is disappointing; the name has caused almost as much division as the controller. The system, I've concluded, will sell, but only because of the name behind it (Nintendo), the price (cheaper), and Nintendo's own home games (Mario, Metroid, Zelda.) That's reason enough to own any Nintendo system, but Nintendo has ceased to be the system I fell in love with and grew up with. It's a niche system, not a contender, and I find that very, very disappointing.
