i'd like to see a new character wield the same weapon as billy kane from the king of fighters. it be pretty sweet to see. i'm sure namco/bandai could put there own twist on this weapon.

if no one knows what i'm talking about is a staff that seperates into several pieces connected by a chain. i'm thinking he'd be very similar to kilik and maxi in terms of gameplay wise.

are there any weapons youd like to see in this installment which wasn't in before.

what do you think.

Oh you mean a 3 section staff. that would would be pretty cool to see a character wield that weapon.

I can get behind the idea of mostly new characters (after having thought it over), I'm just praying that my worst fear about it won't come to pass: New characters with recycled moves/weapons. Don't give someone else the weapon of the character you kicked out. If you're going to do that, then why replace the character to begin with? They've already done it (more or less) with the new guy. I really hope he's the only one. I truly wish that they take this as an chance to introduce so new and fresh ideas to the game. This includes weapon sets. There are plenty of weapons they've not ever touched on in the series yet. Let them be original about it.

I disagree. I don't think a fighting game should consistently change the fighting style of the characters and the roster inbetween games. That is my biggest problem with Mortal Kombat. You played one game, and you have to entirely relearn it for the next one. At least with Soulcalibur, when an old character exits, their fighting style is kept alive with a new character. I think it's a completely fair way to evolve the roster and keep the playability throughout the franchise.

Think there's a bit of a misunderstanding. I'm not saying don't use the weapons sets that are there... I'm saying that if you're going to kick characters out and use brand new ones with the same weapon sets, what's the use of doing away with the original characters in the first place? What's the fun in a bunch of clone characters? If they're going to bring in new characters, they should have weapons unique to them, not recycled weapons from cut fighters. That's all I'm saying. If you bring in new characters, make them as fresh as possible.. otherwise, what's the point?

The point is presumably to remain a logical throughline for bloodlines and relevant connections in the fiction, while also satisfying players who will no doubt miss certain omissions if they aren't there in any fashion. One of the undeniable successes of Tekken 3's jump forward was its ability to render old styles onto new characters. With any luck, Soul Calibur will do much the same, utilizing old weapons in ways that are both familiar, but new.

Some sense of continuity is surely better than an arbitrary blank restart...

I don't know... I certainly don't begrudge anyone their opinion.. I just find it kind of redundant. If you're going to use new characters with the same weapons, then IMO, it makes no sense to take the originals out in the first place. Just doesn't make any sense to me to put the effort into making a new character and working them into the story... if you're not going to make them unique.. but rather a slightly tweaked copy of a "missed" character. Makes more sense to just have that "missed" character in there in the first place. *shrugs* that's just my thought though.

Why do people redecorate instead of demolishing their home?

At some point I think you have accept the practicality of it, that they have built themselves a familiar franchise and as much as they might want to move forward, they need to maintain those throughlines. I think that's how you have to look at the mechanics and creativity of it.

From a fictional standing it makes sense to have those throughlines.
It would be a little bit nonsensical for a serial to completely abandon any touchstones from its well established past. Layer in the expectations of familiar fans and perhaps the practical limitations of a weapons based fighting game and I think it makes more sense to expect some fashion of returning powers, even if they're trying to press forward in the story, and/or put a fresh coat of paint and some new sofas on the series.

I'm really not a Soul Calibur guy, but I would like to be more interested in the series than I am and from an outsider perspective, I'm interested in what they're doing to move forward. At the same time, if this installment is my 'in' to the series, I relish the possibility of using it to track backward. I think it's the overlooked compromise to a 'reboot' that more franchises should get back to addressing.

I do get what you're saying.. I do. I just don't like new characters made out to be like costume changes for already existing characters. I will agree that you make great points. However my answer is still this: If you want those characters skills/Weapon sets to be in the game.. then include the character they belong to. Don't make a tweaked copy playing dress up as a new character. That's how the create-a-character in SC4 was.. which made it kind of boring to me. At least in SC3 they had a few other weapon choices that were different enough from the main character's weapons.

Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this. However, I wouldn't worry. They're far more likely to go your route (and probably for the exact reasons you pointed out) So I'm not hopeful the new characters will be unique in any way. Which, IMO, is a sad waste of creative potential.

I just hope they add a few new (not before seen in a Soul Calibur game) Weapon sets. Just give me a Sai style (at least in Create-a-Character mode if not a sai-wielding new fighter), and have Kilik return (I believe that he was young enough that 17yrs won't effect him that much) and I'll be more or less happy.

at ign or gamespot they said there will be guest characters. so my question to you is who would you choose as a guest character and why. sorry i can't find the article.

i'd choose kunimitzu because of having yoshimitzu already in the soul calibur series. she'd be more of an agile fighter like taki but have more throws and unblockable attacks, etc. plus i'd like to see how soul calibur would make kunimitzu to here tekken counter part.

my other choice would haohmau from samurai showdown series. he'd be the perfect rival to mitsirugi. i'm thinking his unblockable attack could be where he throws a tornado at his opponet using his sword and could have a similar knockdown effect like yoshimitzu poison breath.

both these fighters would make good guest character and both wield weapons, are from different games besides the sc series.

do you like my choices and who would you like as a guest character or guest characters.

I wouldn't mind seeing Kunimitzu actually. I liked her and I think she'd be a great fit in the SC universe.

Haohmaru, on the other hand, I think is just a tad too much like Mitsurugi. If they were going to to go with someone from the Samurai Showdown series... I'd say either Amakusa, Tam Tam, or Nicotine... just for something a little different. That's only my opinion though.

Personally I'd love to see some of the last Bronx characters in here. Nagi, Lisa, or Yusaku would all be cool choices.

Hurm...Loved SCII, didn't care for SCIII, and SCIV's character creator is the only thing that kept me around. I'll have to give this more time before I put much judgement on it. Don't really care for what I'm seeing for the main character, though.

A trailer with the same music, sound effects, and stages as Soul Calibur IV, only with a geriatric Mitsurugi, a Siegfrield I initially took for Raphael, possibly the prettiest boy swordsman in a good long while, and a girl 98% of people think is Cassandra but isn't.

.... This is the first time I've NOT been excited for Soul Calibur.

I'll need to see more than reused assets and bland new characters to pay attention after the inane Star Wars crossover, gimped story mode, generic character builds, and "everything's cover in vasaline" shine that's on everything from skin to hair to clothes.

Ivy's costume looks cool, but it's really nothing more than a clothed version of her SC3 costume.

I'd love to see her in something beyond what she usually wears as a primary.

Reeeeeeally hope the gameplay steps up. I mean, I've always enjoyed the series, but as fighting games they've been pretty mediocre for the most part.

to Ion3008 i can't find the article on gamespot or ign but i know they said there would be guest characters. sc has been doing guest characters for years. for example spawn on x-box,link on gamecube, heihachi on ps2. these were the guest characters for sc2. in soul calibur 4 you had yoda, darth vader, the apprentice from star wars force unleashed. in soul calibur broken destiny they had kratos.

i'm just hoping the guest character will be good.

other games that are new to doing guest characters is mortal kombat with freddy. street fighter x tekken is having the character from infamous. and etc.

i'm sure you could find the article in the archieve on gamespot or ign if you don't believe me. i'm not the type of person that lies.
