People get this perception of Rap from what they hear on the radio.
I know that is cliched but it's true. It hasn't been popular for very long, like maybe two decades, and doesn't have the established SUPERBANDS that rock has like ACDC and Guns and Roses and shit like that.
Imagine if rock was the new thing and all you heard on the radio was shit like My Chemical Romance and Panic! At the Disco
You'd think everyone who listens to rock are emo pussy faggots!
But "Rap" is new and the shit on the radio appeals to the most people (read: people without taste). Big comapnys sign artists that make money, not good music.
For real Hip Hop, you HAVE to look underground. Cunninlynguists, Sage Francis, Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, I-Tech, Louis Logic any of the good shit. Or, you can simply look back into the day of the late 80s to early nineties.
Look for alternative rap. Jazz Rap like A Tribe Called Quest (who have an album widely regarded as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time) or De La Soul.
Dig deeper beneath the surface of "crap" music that you hear on the radio and you'll find good, real music.
Touchdown Steelers.

Okay, enough.
I'm really tired of reading these kinds of threads that generalize Hip Hop/Rap as a genre that's all about 'ghetto this', 'gun clapping', hoes that, etc. What's hillarious is that with the ever expanding vastness that is the internet, people either cannot or choose not to find one song that crushes their infantile and illogical perceptions of this particular genre. I've had to explain it a number of times before in similar threads and it appears I'll have to do so once again...
All these generalizations that is made on the genre only narrow ones understanding of it. People may look at acts such as 50 Cent, Ja Rule, The Game and others as the embodiment of Rap/ Hip Hop, while they make up only a part of it.
If people are turned off by such acts that have aggressive and violent lyrics and the images they give, then they may be surprised to know that much like there is a 'yang', there is a 'yin'. Acts and artists such as Common, Mos Def, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Black Eyed Peas, John Legend, KRS-ONE, Outkast, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Kanye West, Jin, Nappy Roots, and others are not of the current trend that what people see. It's so easy to sit back from a distance and snipe at a genre and make invalid generalizations on it entirely. I challenge anyone to compare the lyrics of 50 Cent and Common and then tell me that ALL Rap/Hip-Hop is the same.
A lot of the artist out merely make 1-2 trendy songs to access the general public so they can be identified. Those songs are played on rotation constanly, yet their more mature songs are left on the cd. They're out there to make money not good music. And please! 50 has no talent whatsoever. I'd buy 20 Common cd's before I'd buy his. As I said, compare the lyrics of 50 Cent and Common and you'll see a difference of what they are saying and trying to get across to fans.
Such narrow views of the genre cause of some talentless artists should be the prevailing thought. Hate on 50 Cent and others like him if you wish, but don't reign in the whole genre in the same category where they do not reside.
And for those interested or too trifling to even do the leg work, I've taken the liberty of helping you out.

I could post music from other artists all night to illustrate how diverse Hip Hop/Rap is, but I'll stop with these. Do you hear some of their music on the radio? Not regularly cause the stations need to make money from advertisers and they can't sell with Common, Royce Da 5' 9" or Murs music. They need 50 Cent or Lil John crap. The same shit (imo) that people vibe that has no deeper meaning other than the literal connotations that they write.
And JUST as Poasty said, took to the underground for the REAL artists. But regardless, stop making fallacious rants and generalizations about a genre that has more layers underneath the trendy bullshit surface that the radios play.

I'm probably the biggest Tupac fan alive, and I must say that today's rap is garbage. Not saying there weren't any other good rappers but rap itself is officially dead. Radio stations have been taken over by southern (c)rap, all about their bling, h03z, cars, houses, rimz, stupid shit.
I'm really sick of today's rap, maybe cuz I'm old school. this new shit is SHIT literally.

Hmmm... didn't address the actual content of my post. Interesting. Well, hopefully the brevity of this one will run contrary to the original epic...
Generalize all you wish, but all that you think you know is not what is entirely true.
Ghostdragon
1. It's simple. The beats could be made with a computer in 15 minutes and the lyrics are written just like a nursery rhyme. A hit could literally be made in a half-hour.
2. It's catchy. The drum patterns of the beats and simple chanting-like lyrics is very catchy and sticks in people's heads.
3. It's trendy. This is the most important one. If you listen to rap, you're cool.
The music (beats) is ok for the most part, but I can't stand the god-awful lyrics not to mention most of the artists have absolutely no musical talent.

Can I be considered the third one who hates country? I'd like to set fire to the world's most popular country singers.
Anyway, I think rap music should be the least of our worries when it comes to "moral" standards. Sometimes I'll be flipping through my music video channels and come across some kind of rock/heavy metal type song, and after seconds of hearing it, I'll be completely disgusted. I think it's sickening the lyrics that some of those songs have. The singers are not boasting about themselves or anything of that nature, instead they seem to be stating about how f*cked the world is, how everyone is depressed, trapped, etc..... now THAT's disturbing music.
I'd much rather go to a club, listen to some Hip Hop jams, and have fun with my life.

I like some rap. usually Common, Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West, and Mos def are usually my choices, but every once in a while, I'll listen to something from the mainstream but only if it actually sounds like its worth listening to.

Volutarily ignorant and bias? You asked the question:
"Why the hell do most people like crap music, I mean rap music?
Yet did not read the answer met by us who are fans of rap. I suppose it is your choice.
--------------------
Anyhow, I like to bring forth a point for the intelligent here in refernce to the more "gangsta rappers".
I believe there is even a purpose for them. I think they fill the avoided aggressive entity that is in us all. I like some of the battle MC's out there is why I mention this, and yet it seems they are commonly disregarded as subtance lacking because of alot of their content. I find the substance in the entertainment factor even if it is a random puchline like:
*turns on widows media player to find a famous punchliner*..........
Bare with me here, I'll just take LLoyd Banks for a pure example since "L" was the first letter I typed in. Mixed Tape: 10-15sec.
"I aint' really surprised, that I neva see you wit chips--
Cuz you always in the crib like tuna fish--
I got the rap game tamed the fools buggin and my di-amonds look like I been playin' wit food colorin'---
And i'm aware of what a slug a do--
But I'ma shovanist so it's no problem gun buttin' you--
I know you used to ni**az rubbin' you--
but I'll kick a bitch-out fas-ta than 3-L-W"
Entertaining to me but no real substance at all. Ha! i.e. it was funny. In other words, it doesn't have to have a meaning everytime to be entertaining.
Oh, and don't get it twisted....I can't stand 50cent.

Rap music is ok, not a fan but i tend to listen to a few(mostly because of the beat), But what i find funny is the music videos, anybody see Bossy-Kelia= worst music video ive seen in my life. IMO if you like that video your just retarded. Also people don't like rap because of the videos. All you see in a rap video nowadays are new cars/ a guy singen with all his ganster friends/ chicks dancing everywhere(not a bad thing)/ if your lucky you get a fight scene where two tough gangsters are fighting/ thats pretty much it. Don't hate on me if you disagree with we its just my opinion.

I don't know why people like rap, I don't. It sounds all the same to me, usually performed by some black man, talking about the hood and what not. It's a bit sad, that in every video that gets released half naked women dominate it.

well "most" people dont. hip hop has never really been a constant top seller.
"most" people just like music in general. i like rock/metal, and most of the old school rap. todays brand of hiphop is a joke, and has gotten very stale, much like 80's hair metal. everyone is doing the same things, and are basically copying eachother.
its big right now ( and has been for the past few years) because stations like mkt cram it into your ears. a rapper will comeout, have a hit record..then he'll become a producer..create his own label, and repete. and he'll probably show up on other recordings with the same old beats in just different timing sayin "yyyyea" "okaaayyy "what"
this current brand of rap has just about ran its course.

Like what's been stated the current "popular" type of hip-hop/rap is not representitive of the community in general. I mean seriously, if anybody thinks that 50 Cent could win a rap battle against Guru from Gangstarr seriously needs to have their head checked. There's also stuff like A Tribe Called Quest that transcends all types of music with beats and tracks that just feel good to listen to thanks to the jazzy influence.

Its basically already been said before but...
You said that Rap is talking about Violence and shit like that right?
Well, If you listen to Rock you are basically listening to the same thing. Just different beats... Rap : "I'm gonna murder dat ho" Rock" I'm gonna kill that bitch"
And theres a song by KoRn " Y'all wanna single"...Lyrics in it are "Y'all wanna single say fuck that, fuck that fuck that"
Are they singing happy there? No there singing out of hate.
Basically its this...
If your gonna bash a music for the bad lyrics, then you better speak about all music then.
Take Rap...then take Rock....Now Listen....
I like Rap and rock, and I personally have nothing wrong with either of them.

I know it sounds strange, but the main thing I don't like about most rap music that I've heard is the beat. It just seems so repetitive. "Oh this beat sounds good, lets use it though the whole song. Change in tempo? Nah."
Obviously it is wrong to classify a whole genre, but there are many cases where an artist defines themselves by the genre instead of just making the music that feels right. It happens in all genres, but esp. country (I know, I'm a hater). If it is the kind of music that you really like though, you notice the subtle differences in each artist. I will grudgingly accept this as art though i'm not going to listen to every song to find one I like.

I repeat, "Because it speaks to me directly." Just the same as the "White Man" screaming(or monotoned "whinning") over accoustics does for you.
Emo is a product of rock, now that's sad. Decently wealthy and still compalining. Hahahahahaaaa. No.
---------------------------------------
*sighs again*
Rap is about struggle. Rap is about the come up out of an oppressive situation and the journey thereof. Rap is competition. Rap is about gorgeous women, the big cars, the huge house we are arrested for walking up to and now can have. Rap is about how many people like yourself misunderstand the next persons upbringings and try endlessly to conclude the celebration. Rap is about becoming an active citizen in whatever neighborhood or city you were confined to. Notice none of these things have a "color" associated with them. Rap is all things in life litterally.
A rapper worth listening to will not hide the fact of life from a listener. So that's why you see half naked women in a video. Further, little do you seem to understand, those women in that video are more than respected. Remember it's a business. Everybody plays their part....we all get paid, because the masses like what they see and want a piece of that. The masses=every nationality, every age if willing to join. Look at the movement of the south.
(Btw, is what I believe people refer to when talking about the current state of the rap industry. The "Southern Smoke")
A wide majority of the artist coming out of the southern states are connected. Hand-shakes and the words "Lets Get This Money". Less, more.
Something I think the rest of the entertainment industry is currently coming to terms with.
I don't think any of you who don't understand why people like rap, realize that your favorite genre of music is exactly the same on paper either.
Contractually, market wise, popularity, content wise, and anything general you'd like to try and bring to light about rap. It's the exact same. If you don't appeal, if you can't sell a record, make a dollar....."G'thfuck ah-da-heh"
This does not exclude Music of A-N-Y genre.
-----------------
Nothing is different. Not lyrics.....Not what's in the video, not the "message" nothing is different except who prefers to listen to whatever genre. Even the people not listening to rap are infected by the language and styles associated. Mr and Mrs."My Bad" and "Loose Fitting Jeans and Apple Bottoms", jump in a Big Cadillac Escalade on "Dub duces" oh, excuse me 22 inch rims. Ha! Ridicule
The disposition here is taste. Which is respectable if you guys would allow your minds to span beyond a spoiled child and just come to terms with that. Instead you choose to deny things like GhostDragons post. A clear source for the answers to your questions abroad. Silly...silly humans.

I don't really have anything against rap. Aside from the occasion song, I usually don't care for. More of a hard rock guy, myself.
What bugs me about rap music really is the upper-middle class suburban white kids who think just because they listen to a few rap songs they're "gangsta." I run into this jack-offs a lot in the bar and to them, the solution to every problem is start fighting.
I'd like to see this punks live in a real ghetto for a few days and see how "gangsta" they really are.
But I don't blame rap music for that....just the assholes who take it too far.

^Lol
I myself am not really into rap, more of an R&B person, but sometimes they cross over which is kinda cool.
And to those people who say rap is all the same, all that I can say is that is complete bullshit. You are entitled to your own opinion, but you obviously haven't heard enough to make such a generalization. To me, all rock songs are the same - lots of drum, guitars and some emo looking guy singing - that is just because I dont enjoy the genre of music and havent really taken in the meaning of the music.
And also, to those people saying that rap is all about gangstas and shooting people and living in the ghetto or whatever... you haven't heard much, have you. There are rap songs with deeper meaning, and some that talk about things of great importance - such things as love or religion are common topics in rap.
I have nothing against any genre of music, and rap is no exception. I dont think it is all the same, nor is it crap...
