Alright Im going to explain rap throughly so you can get a devils advacate opinion on this subject( i listen to everything except gospel and country [eww country]).
There are a few different types rap there are: gangsta rap,rap gospel(RIP tupac),freestyle rap(mixtape like ocapella),houston/ATL rap(about cars, ladies, ice, grillz, and drinking expensize drinks),ghetto rap(rapping at hardships and living through hell as a child), and death rap(rap talking about killing people or talking about them someday dying[sometimes known as suicide rap, like biggy smalls was and tupac. O and i cant forgot prison rap like akon(thats kinda obvious wat tht is).
those are the different types that Ive heard are sub categories of rap/hip hop

I'm really sick of today's rap, maybe cuz I'm old school. this new shit is SHIT literally.

U are totally right SC u couldnt have said it any better. Most of the stuff I have in my playlist is before 2005 bs. Most of the stuff I have is old school stuff from the 90s like Nas' Illmatic and most of Nas' albums and all of Jay-Z's albums. Listen to the stuff before Jay-Z retired (not sayin hes almighty) and u will understand the real Hip-Hop. Some people that rap for real are Talib Kweli, Mos Def etc. The 10 albums that are the blueprint of real hip-hop are: (Not in order)
1. Illmatic - Nas
2. Reasonable Doubt - Jay-Z
3. Both of Notorious B.I.G.'s albums
4. Tupac before he died (too tired to name them all)
5. The Chronic -Dr. Dre
6. Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) - Wu-Tang Clan
7. Straight Outta Compton - NWA
8. Any Eric B. & Rakim album
9. The Infamous - Mobb Deep
10. It's Dark & Hell Is Hot - DMX
Honorable Mention : Doggystyle - Snoop Dogg, Any Public Enemy, Any Run DMC

couldn't agree with you more, oh and another thing, in rock they SING in rap they SPEAK (and even that is debateable)

I agree with the title for the most part, I'll still respect it for the most part but I don't like rap at all with the exception of the beats and nothing but.
I feel it has a negative influence on young people with the vulgar words often used in rap.
But hey, like everyone else that's my view.
I prefer techno(trance, hardcore, deep beats) and rock(classic, 70's, 80's, 90's present and industrial) personally.
Don't like rap, r & b, country, opera or deaf metal.

I don't know ja, ja ja. I don't even know what the difference is between hip hop and rap. Mabe not as much chains. I don't know what language little john speaks. I am a lucky one I only have an aerial, so I don't get mtv and all those annoying stations.

well number one narrow headed people such as yourself open your mouth speaking about something you know nothing about alot of people who hate on hip hop do not understand it and people who do not understand things are automatically frightened by it i like hip hop for it's skill beats and sick rhymes and i am offened by your comments honestly so keep them to yourself or watch how you say things and i am not sure if you are aware of this at all or not but hip hop producers are into every form of music imaginable thats where they get there samples from so people involved in hip hop have more knowledge about music in general then most people and to awnser the person above me rapping is rapping the rhymes the words how you flow etc.... and hip hop is a whole way of living it is a life style

But at least rock music is diverse. Rap music is literally the same shit over and over again. There's probably more rappers than guitar players in the world, and they can all just get a record deal and put out a shit album, and someone will like it, because MTV plays it.
IMO music should be fun and nonsensical. That's the best kind.

I figure the majority (if not most) rock/metal music has no mention of death nor the "devil stereotypes" (The rest probably being Black Metal) In fact most songs have strong lyrical meanings and backgrounds to them if you bother to pay attention to them.
Lyrics shouldn't stop someone from listening to the music and still liking it anyways. As long as it has some kickass melodic/symphonic instruments and solos, and the vocals are strong and fit well into the rest of the music.
Here's an interesting article from WikiPedia:
"Melodic death metal, though from the same geographic area as black metal, rarely speaks of Satanism or the downfall of Christianity, but has more poetic themes, which vary greatly. Traditionally, lyrics deal with more expressionist themes."
Keep in mind that looks (and vocals) can be deceiving.

Okay, rap can be somewhat diverse, but nowhere near as diverse as rock.
With rock, there's everything from hard rock to pop rock to industrial to emo to punk to grunge to classic to goth to acoustic rock.

That's a really ignorant thing to say. Not to intentionally insult you either man, I speak of the actual definition of ignorant (basiclly : That's a really "Non-knowing" thing to say)
Why in purgatory do you think rap rivals rock? It's because they share just as many simularities//variations as the other. "Not nearly as diverse"? Think again.
Rap has proven that it is:
1. Rock (M.O.P., Ice T [remember the "Fuck the Police" controversy? Presidential Attention to "address that issue"])
2. Pop (Nelly)
3. R&B (Twista, Do or Die, and all those duets you're sick of hearing on the radio like J-Lo and Ja-Rule)
4. Hip Hop (Nas, Common Sense, Lupe Fiassco, among a shitload of others.
There is an undeniable difference between "Rap" and
"Hip Hop". Notably, Hip Hop is consistantly more concious than "Rap". You'll find more obvious "Battle" oreinted Rap artist than Hip Hop artist. Although Hip Hop indefinatly shares this quality. Shit, that's what it started from: Freestyles and Battle sessions.< There's a difference you can bank on. Anywhere you go, if you know that difference, it will approve. Trust me.....I Know.
5. Rythme and Blues. (that can be technical, usually left up to the producers of the music. Look to producers like: Jus Blaze, The Neptunes, Snoop Doggs' BAND!!)
{THE ROOTS!!}
6. Jazz (Duh)
7. Collaborations pretty much handle the rest. (Jay-Z to Ice-Cube to Run-D MC to ect....ect....ect.)
Point is, there is no limit in the variations of rap. From underground to mainstream. No Limit!.. pretty much everything is covered. An then there's the pure variations of "Rap" to stand alone themselves.

Not so much, expecially because we have at least a part of all music within Rap. There's even Arabic beats out there now!! HA! Latin, Raegge....ect.
Not "missing" anything man. Not at all.

The quotes are there. You're fine.
Even if you didn't "like" Rap, I can see you're capable of understanding and respecting each of the the genre's differences and similarities.

Very well said. If the music that you like moves you and inspires you then that's all that matters.
