Ok, I'd like to avoid all the "When Baraka gets knocked into the fire in MKA, it's rain!" stuff in this thread, and actually limit it to info people really might not know.
Keeping that in mind, I'd like people to add their own stuff, just not the completely obvious.

So this is what I've noticed / found out over the years:

===
MK1 -
===

- Budget of $20M US
- (Thanks to Ghostdragon for the gross totals)
-Mortal Kombat-
Domestic Gross: $70,454,098
Foreign: $51,741,822
Worldwide: $122,195,920

- Along with Sub Zero, Scorpion leads out the warriors in the “And now for a taste of things to come” scene. He then disappears... (Cut fight scene perhaps? It's rumoured to be a scene where he does a fatality)

- The island’s mountain in the 1st movie represents the MK2 Battle Plan

- The promotional poster seems to remind you of the MK1/2 battle plan as well, specifically Shao Kahn atop the MK2 mountain (but for the movie, Goro, obviously):

- Liu Kang knocks Shang Tsung into the “Pit” (Ok, that one's pretty obvious)

- The arena where Liu Kang fights Reptile has the same window / design as MK2’s Tower stage (thanks to TMK for this one):

- The arena at the start of the fight between Cage and Scorpion is reminiscent of MKII's 'Living Forest"

- Jax is listed as Jaxx in the credits

- Liu Kang is dressed in his MK1outfit for the final fight vs. Shang Tsung

- Trevor Goddard (Kano) died in 2003 from a drug overdose.

- Gregory McKinney (Jaxx) died of a brain anneuryism in 1998 (according to imdb)

- Shang Tsung uses the phrases "Fatality, Flawless Victory and Finish him"

- At the end of the credits, you can hear 3 of Shao Kahn's phrases from MKII: "Excellent, Hahahahahaha, Flawless Victory"

Shao Kahn utters two MK2 game phrases as he appears at the end of the movie: "Bow to me," and "You weak, pathetic fools..." (changed slightly from 'You weak, pathetic fool' - his in-game taunt.)

- On the boat, when Shang Tsung announces "It has begun" - you see an image of Shao Kahn's helmet. (which strangely doesn't look like Shao Kahn at the end of the film...

- Shang Tsung’s boat was originally called the Dragon Wing in the novel

- Liu Kang never once strikes or attempts to attack Kitana in their fight scene, prefering to parry and block her attacks.

- Near the end, when Shang Tsung says 'Seize them" - Kitana exerts her authority (as Princess of Outworld) over the Shadow Priests and commands them to; "Stay where you are!"

Speaking of that scene, here you can see where they got the inspiration for Shang Tsung's Shadow Priests:

- The Outworld is based on the Wastelands of MKII:

- Scorpion uses the game phrases; "Get over here" and "Come here" when talking to his spear. He also uses a made up one that I like, "Get down here", when fighting Johnny Cage.

- During the end credits, an MK3 kombat kode is presented intermittently (I've added the MKIII atrraction message as well):

Haven't had chance to find out which kk that is yet, but I will update when I do.

- Also in the end credits, there is an advertising message for "Otomix clothing".

Otomix were originally planning to advertise in MKII, on Johnny Cage's pants. However, they pulled out at the last minute - probably to avoid a boycott of their product due to the backlash of negative publicity surrounding MKII's blood and gore. The 'otomix pants' can still be seen if you perform Shang Tsung's soul steal fatality on Johnny Cage in MKII:

Or here

- There are a few rumours abound about a couple of deleted scenes from the first movie. Now, I'm not sure if they are from an early version of the script (that somehow someone saw) or just from the novel related to the movie, still -they do sound rather plausible. Here is the info (from imdb):

Scripted but not filmed was a scene where Shang Tsung allowed the "Kombatants" a night to bury Art Lean and mourn his loss. They buried him the Garden of Statues, underneath the statue of Kung Lao; this is the only place where Kung Lao appears in any of the movies. Also scripted but not filmed was a battle between Sonya Blade (who wins, naturally) and Jade, another of Shang Tsung's bodyguards.

(Thanks to superliu for this one) Liu Kang may perform the cartwheel part of his MK1 & 2 Fatality in the first fight of the tournament. It is defintely very similar, though he uses the stick for balance, and could very well have been inspired by the game.

-----------------------------------
MK1/MK2 special moves:
-----------------------------------
- Johnny Cage performs a Shadow Kick (vs. Scorpion) and a Splits Punch (vs. Goro)
He also performs (accidently) his MK2 Friendship: (thanks to RulerofFire-Inferno for reminding me of this one)

- Scorpion performs a Spear (against Cage), a teleport punch (w/out the punch against Cage) and attempts a Toasty fatality

- Kang performs a Bike Kick (vs. Reptile) and a fireball (vs. Shang Tsung)

- Sonya performs a Leg Grab (vs. Kano) and Neck Snap fatality(?)

- Sub Zero performs an ice blast / ice shatter fatality (vs. fighting monk)

- Reptile uses his acid spit (vs. Liu Kang) and invisibility

- Shang Tsung morphs (into Master Boyd and Chan Kang) and uses his Soul Steal fatality

- Jax, Kitana and Shao Kahn never used any of their special moves from the games

- Sonya uses both an uppercut (disarms Kano of his knife) and sweep (vs. monk in the dining room)

- Kano performs a knife swipe (vs. Sonya)

===

MKA -

===

-Mortal Kombat: Annihilation-
Domestic: $35,927,406
Foreign: $15,449,455
Worldwide: $51,376,861
- Raiden defeats the final Raptor by uppercutting him through the roof, then follows him up before seeing he is defeated. This is reference to the two tiered levels in the MK3 series of games.

- MKA had a budget of $30M US

- The elder god of wind is the one to lie to Raiden in the Temple of the Elder Gods. At the end, the fire and water gods reprimand Shinnok. You can assume then, that Shinnok was the elder of wind (which kinda connects to the father / son plotline)

- Mileena, Baraka, Cyrax, Noob Saibot and Ermac appear in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, but are never mentioned by their MK game name. All but Cyrax are also left out of the movie theme song.

- Kung Lao, Kintaro, Sektor, Kabal, Kurtis Stryker are the only characters from the first 3 Mortal Kombat games that never appeared in either MK movie.

- Liu Kang performs his MKII/MK3 dragon Animality (if you can call it that)

- Like in the first film with Kitana, Liu Kang never once strikes or attempts to attack Jade in their fight scene, prefering to parry and block her attacks.

===

MKTJB -

===

- The floor of the arena where the Great Kung Lao fights Goro has the same face as the floor of the Goro vs. Art Lean fight in the 1st MK movie.

- Scorpion and Sub Zero, who are inaccurately dubbed as being from Outworld, seem to have their original fight for the 'honour of their clans' in MKII's Wasteland.

===

MK Conquest

===

In the first episode of MKC, after Kung Lao defeats Shang Tsung he performs a MERCY, allowing him to live rather than kill him like Shao Kahn wants him too. Obvious reference to the MK3 series of games.

---

I'll add more when I remember them, feel free to add your own interesting info. MKC stuff is welcome too.

You missed somethings.

1. Jax does do a special move, the Ground Pound, when he's fighting Motaro.

2. Shao Kahn uses both his shoulder charge, and projectile attack in MKA.

3. Sonya does a Kiss of Death to Cyrax in MKA.

Yeah I didn't include MKA cus they were more obvious in their approach to replicating the games moves. The first MK was much more subtle, or imaginative (think Reptile's acid spit) when incorporating the game features.

For MKA off the top of my head, Cyrax used his bombs and net (though it was acid), Raiden did his torpedo, Motaro his tail sweep etc. The list can go on and on, and I'm trying to list the stuff that isn't all that obvious, ya know?

Sweet ghost man, I had seen those figures once, but didn't know them off hand. I'll add them to the list, thanks.
Awesome thread man, glad this is stickied.

I cant beleive MK:A still made of 50M worldwide.

Heres hoping MK3 will surpass both those movies gross earnings combinedgrin

In the T.V. series Mortal Kombat Konquest,

1. "Konquest is in the title! I take it as a hint for the Konquest mode in MKD and on.

2. Kiera Knightly (Terminator 3) plays as Kaja(?) Oddly enough looks just like a new character to come "Kira".

3. Daniel Berhart also plays in this series as Kiera Knightlys' accomplis and again oddly, he looks strykingly similar to an earlier "new" character in MKDA "Kenshi".

4. TJ Storm is in this series and looks almost exactly like the revamped "Kai".

5. Shang Tsung is played in this series too(can't remember his real name) and again, looks almost exactly like the MKDA revamped Shang Tsung.

Ways the MK Team went to create new characters? IDK. But, it is subtle and interesting at the same time.

As far as media, did anyone know Raiden is nearly beaten by Kano? Shao Khan gives Kano power and a fight to determine "who's the most powerful" happens. Raiden does not win, but escapes outworld.

Another, Raiden has two servants in the comics...."Rayne" and "Wynd". Both female charaters in the series that cater to the Thunder God Raidens' every need.

Maybe obvious maybe not....

my answer
1 Damn right!
2 Kiera Knightly is not the actress of Terminator 3 and Conquest,but her name is Kristanna Locken,however is true Kira is very similar to TAJA not KAJA!
3 Daniel Bernarnt have nothing to do with Kenshi for two reasons:
a Kenshi is blind and a swordman and Siro not
b kenshi is asian and Siro not
4 Who in the hell is TJ storm?
5 is half true and half not:bruce locke seems a lot like the DA Tsung,but hs attire is differnt very different.
In Conquest Tsung is weared like Sahng tsung in the first movie!

Hmmm....not to be picky but the show was called Mortal Kombat: Conquest not Konquest. If you have the DVD's or recorded the shows on tape you can verify this. (Had recorded shows until lost tapes, I now have the UK version of DVDs)

Well, actually LR has a point. And it's been a contentious point between many MK nerd... er ... fans, that Conquest is one of the few times in the series where C wasn't substituted for K.

As for this thread, I'll update again soon, with more stuff you may or may not know grin

For Krsx66:that's not true,Konquest is taken from the Tv movie show,in fact both of them are placed during Shao kahn invasion(Conquest ending and Konquest during the journey on Edenia).
Therefore C/Konquest is a way to say "Shao kahn is here!",and will kick our asses!
Another resemnblance between Conquest and Konquest is that both of them try to explain(in a uncanonical way) the origins of Mortal Kombat before the asctual heroes (Liu Kang,cage,Sonya,ecc) and try to explain the history a lot of years before that events.
Thereofore with this evident resemblance i think that Konquest is taken from Conquest
PS:in all Mk games there's homages to the movies or cartoon show or comics,i think that Konquest mode is a homage to tv series.

That's cool, I didn't even remember that.

Hey, LF89:

Go in here And scroll down to the third post.

You mean to tell me there is no influence. None? Slap a red rag or small scarf over Daniel Bernharts face and tah dah! Kenshi. Haha!. Pokin fun.

And I've never known Kenshi to be Asian, just a martial artist with a profound past in martial arts. Show me and I'll reform. Even in the Konquest mode of MKDA when you go talk to him he doesn't resemble or sound like an asian man. Meh. Anyway, the only difference between him and Kenshi, is the blindness. Daniel is even a real life accomplished swordsman and martial artist......AND He played a roll in MK Conquest!? C'mon. Height, figure, eveything is virtually the same. How can that not be a nod for the real life person that is Daniel Bernhart?

I scewed up the names on the Kristana Loken // Kira character thing, but that's what I meant, so I guess you got me there. heh.

Looking for more stuff now.

Wonderful post ... just thought I'd add a few tidbits.

In Mortal Kombat: The Movie there is a couple of seconds of film edited out. You may be able to find these few seconds in an early promotional trailer if you can track one down.

After Lui Kang defeats Shang Tsung's summoned warriors near the end of the film he look above to see Shang Tsung standing atop the "pit" if you could call it that. Lui Kang looks to him and says "You can't run from me Shang!". Tsung then points at him and replies, "I don't NEED to run!". This was either edited out or changed once it was released to video being that now the dialogue has become Tsung saying to Lui, "Lui Kang, I have seen into your soul, YOU ... WILL ... DIE!"

Apparently the Region 2 DVD version of the movie has a "Making Of" featurette and deleted scenes. This I cannot confim, though I am looking into it.

Also, another user mentioned the fact that Brian Thompson, who played Shao Kahn in MK: Annihilation, was in Joe Dirt. One other character from Joe Dirt was also featured in the Mortal Kombat universe and that was Jaime Pressly who played Mika in the Mortal Kombat: Conquest TV series. She was only in 3 episodes but how can you forget a face like hers? Quick Edit: I found a link to the original trailer - it shows the above mentioned scene between Lui and Tsung for a second or two. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QN8hYF3XmCQ

Thank you sir, I also noticed this.

Did anyone notice the Centaur statue in the backround? Is it coincidence that the 4 characters happen to stop and talk right in front of the statue that slightly resembles the winning pose of Motaro? You be the judge. --sorry for the editing again, I'm working on a widescreen high def monitor at 1440x900 so the images I see as average must be too big for the site, so I'm having trouble judging what's small enough to fit and too small.--

Nice thread.

Im not exactly sure how true this is, but I once read (Im sure it was an interview with Marjean Holden aka MKA's Sheeva, I cant remember where it was sadly) that Sheeva was originally supposed to have two fight scenes in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

The first scene was supposed to be between Liu Kang and Rayden in the Edenian ruins, as a way of seperating the fighters so that Jade could 'defeat' Sindel.

The second, was a fight with Kitana after Liu Kang freed her from Shao Kahn. During this she was to be killed by Kitana.

The reason the scene were rewritten and omitted were because it would have cost $1.5million for all the retakes and effects that needed to be done on Sheeva to get her arms in, moving effectively etc.

Woulda been great to see Kitana kill Sheeva, rather than her be squished liked a bug. This excuse does kinda make sense (however suck-tastic it is), as both ladies end up with rather lackluster parts in MKA. Kitana's only real fight is with her mother in the film (tho she beats the shit outta the extermination squads with her fans hehe), and Sheevas appearance is limited too.

----------------------------------------

Also, did people notice how Kitana doesnt use her fans in MK1, but does in MK:Annihilation. The shape and style of the fans is very similar to those used in MK:Conquest, yet both are very different from the ones Kitana uses in the games.

Also, in MKA when Sonya fights Mileena, she mistakes her for Kitana
Sonya: 'Kitana!?'
Mileena: 'You Wish!'

This is never brought up however. Which to me seems a bit.....strange. They were obviously going for the Kitana/Mileena twin issue, yet it gets forgotten about as soon the fights over. Sonya neither checks nor confronts Kitana about someone who looks identical to her. Strange. Also Mileena is played by Dana Hee, who plays Siann in MKC (the MKC version of Sareena..in that shes Quan Chis lead assassin and has Sareenas costume).

-------------------------------------

in MKC, Siann, Mika and Sorra VERY closely resemble Sareena, Kia and Jataaka (respectively) costume wise.

------------------------------------

Sonya only has one fight scene in the first movie, but she was supposed to fight another, which is in the novel. (I think it was Jade tho not 100% sure). Also Jax (or Jaxx) plays a larger role in the novel than he does in the film
