MORE!!

Characters

1.) Shao Kahn's close up was crazy... See all the detail? The color? Yes please. In the cut scene, he looks better that he did in MKvsDc, but in the in-game shot, he still looks really bulky. I'd just ask that they tighten him up a bit. He looks like the polygons got stretched out too much or something. I need something like a fit pro-football player, or wrestler.

2.) Raiden at the beginning, the detail....including his "screaming like a little bitch". lmao! They played the suspense just right in the trailer, so that really made my eyebrows raise up. "Wow"

I also liked how he moved when he was walking. THAT's the way I remember Raiden from way back when. Dark mooded figure, mysterious even...those glowing blue eyes. Yea baby. I wish we had the tech savvy available to put the lighting all around him in-game now. That'd make my day. I see how close up they got on his hands at the beginning though, so I'm satisfied because they're showing off what they can do a lil bit. I see you baby! Ur mah boi!

The other thing is, I can't tell if his voice is the same guy (probably not gonna be considering the voice from MkvsDc was also Batmans voice, wasn't it?) So it's cool as long as they get it close. He sounds familiar enough.

3.) Johnny Cages' specials look sweet! That design still erks me though. I won't touch him with that silly tattoo on his chest. Looks like something a kid would do with KaK. (wutz dat?)

4.) Reptiles teleport goes nuts. I think i see what they're trying to do with his design, but I'm not sure. I still haven't see a better design for a reptilian character than they did with MKSM//MKA. I still like that one as the best of any game to have a half man, half reptile sort of character. Follow up would be Soul Caliber 4, with Raptor...

I also like the acid spit as a long stream of spray like that, but I don't think they topped how violent it used to look back in the day, yet. It used to have a jolting affect to it because of how quick the assault was. It used to look like it burned REALLY bad. This new one is aesthetically pleasing but, doesn't seem to have as much of an element of surprise, or the "immediately burned by fire" affect that I'm looking for from that move. The "agony factor" once your hit. It used to sound like a snake bite too. That suckers gotta burn like hell....it's acid! lol

Also....force ball?

5.) Nightwolf looks good all the way around. I just hope they give him more moves based on "the spirit of" things. Animals, particularly the wolf...ect. I'd like to see a radical move or two for him, something like what the guys who did Blood Storm experimented with. Stuff like that makes me wonder why they'd insist on sharing elements or powers at all anymore.

The bow and arrow still looks really good (watching that old video, I wonder if the tomahawk axe will come back again?). I like that his model is thinner than in MKDA-A too. He looks alot better refined like that because it's closer to the old sprites.

6.) Mileena looks okay I guess....Nah, let me stop... I don't like it. She's gonna need her alternate costume if that one stays the way it is. I think she needs a tad more cover-up. I think the pinnacle of her designs to date was probably MKD. Primary and Alternate costumes organized like they were. I'd put the costume that is more appropriate for battle out in front as the primary, and the slutty thing as the second or third alt. Maybe even something we'd have to find, unlock, or what have you.

Mileena is MKs eye candy so, I'd have them just try something else that is still provocative as her primary, but that is more....mm...battle ready than what she has on now.

Her moves and stuff look insane though. She looks like she's well put together this go round. That sequence in the trailer was a highlight, definitely.

7.) Sub-Zero looks cool after I sit there and examine the thing for a second. He's got a few cues from the mask-less MK3 Sub-Zero what with the straps around his arm and all that. Gotta change that mask on him though. It's a good look but, the same exact mask? Two games in a row? Ok, maybe it's not exactly the same, but the point is, I can't tell.

I like the padding and the little other changes to his costume. Reminds me of his MKDA alt with the all pale skin & the ponytail. I actually liked that design and thought is was placed correctly as an alt. Made him look like somebodies grandmaster.

That ice sword move is the shit. Keep going that way with his moves creatively a little bit more, and we're golden. I also like how when he "breaks the sword off in your ass", he almost throws the remainder away behind him. He should do that btw, let it fall out of his hand and break into pieces. It looks like disrespect, which would be really cool for that move.

I also like how people are frozen, but a noticeable step away from MkvsDc would be much appreciated please. That pose they most consistently get frozen in should change somehow.

8.) Sektor looks damn good. His moves and stuff are pretty standard here so I have no complaints. I wanna see what else "techo/pyro" he can do.

9.) Kung Lao's stuff is all straight. No complaints here either.

--

Any one find it odd that they've given up 9 characters on the first trailer? 9 months before release? How big is the roster gonna be? They usually drag it out a little bit more with this part. Interesting...

more later....

I like the fact that it has a more darker appearance, however I don't like the fact that it will have characters from MK1-3(if that's correct). I also like the is back to 2D, I think it works better.

I did find that odd and interesting, and that's why I am thinking it's gonna be somewhere in the 25-30 range. That way they can all be fleshed out and unique, with tons of complexity to each, but also that's a really good amount of fighters. As I stated in the other thread, If they at least get 25 in there, that's all but 7 characters from the MK1-MK3 time period. I figured the most likely not to be playable would be:

Motaro
Goro
Kintaro
Sheeva
Khameleon
Chameleon

Then Rain makes 7, but I could see him making the cut.

So yeah it was surprising, but they have had more time to make this game, plus they had MKvsDC models they already have designed for 10 or so characters that they could just tweak and alter...so I think 25-30 is a safe bet. Plus DLC is most certainly gonna happen too. Which I would assume Quan Chi is a front runner for that.

Very impressed with the trailer, much better than what I anticipated.

PROS:
-Amazing graphics, specifically the arenas; The stages shit all over the MK vs DC arenas. Ridiculous amount of detail and great atmosphere to each level. The updated 'old school' arenas are jaw dropping.

-Classic appearance to all the characters. Since this is a relaunch of the franchise, the decision to give them a revised look on their look works quite well, really gives everything a nice classic feel.

-Fun gameplay; The gameplay looks ridiculously fun just by watching the trailer. Fast paced, and the 2D design to the gameplay was a great choice. Great special moves as well.

-Fatalaties! No more watered down BS, these fatalatities look brutal!

-Excellent character roster; Every character I wanted to appear in MK vs DC that wasn't included returns in this game, and they all look amazing.

CONS:
-Nowhere near as dark and gritty as I expected, although the visuals are indeed very well done.

-Character models, although good, pale in comparison to the level of detail featured in the arenas.

-Some animations look a bit stiff, but that might be because the project is still very early. Still, I am a bit concerned because this was a huge problem with the last couple of games.

Other than that, I'm pumped up for the game. Looks amazing, returning to it's roots, and the developers are taking good care of this project from the looks of it - delaying the game to March of next year means we'll be getting a better product at the end, so I'm all for it.

I've watched the trailer 2 times.

Likes:

1. Shao Kahn has inhuman Dragon Eyes, I hope his helmetless Tobias thornface is used.

2. Reptile's Costume being a fusion of his SM and MK2 looks..with hints of his alt from DA..(random armour and bones and such)

3. TAG KOMBAT!! Made me so excited to see this. I think every fighter needs soem TAG option.

4. Sub-Zero's ice sword stab construct.

5. Kung Lao's Saw Blade Fatality

6. Johnny Cage's X-Ray Fatality.

7. The Speed and fluidity of the gameplay.

8. Mileena's Ivy Dominatrix costume >:3

9. Raiden screaming

Dislikes:

1. Kung Lao's costume is the same as the SM one.

2. General Lack of Scorpion

Now, I know this is just an progress teaser, and it's reasonable that Scorpion is being saved for some Story Trailer or something bigger...

I just couldn't find anything to be negative about hahah grin

I absolutely Love this trailer in many many ways.

Gameplay

The gameplay in this game was the most anticipated part of it for me. Despite all the questions and theories floating around about a reboot, things really got cluttered. It wasnt so much of which direction it went for me, sure I had my preferences but This time around I wanted something great and solid. Every time in this series when we get a fresh concept or Idea, its always the following game that really captializes upon that concept.

When we first got our hands on MKDA, many MK fans were loving it. It braught new graphics, story and gameplay engine. Sure it took a bashing compared to Tekken and other series, But it still struck a new point in the series. Then we got MK Deception which in my mind, perfected the formula and offered us exactly what the team was aiming for.

After Playing MKDC and getting my brain full of the combat system, I was looking forward to MK9 even more. The fact that special moves were able to be integrated into the combat system completely blew the book right open on what a person could create or personally come up with. I myself am a person who explores combo potential to the teeth and MKDC just opened up so many doors, instead of juggling a combos with special moves before, in between or at the end, I could whip off a freeze or spear in the middle of a combo that I would otherwise have to complete under the right circumstances to be able to complete.

Watching the trailer, They took that freedom to a whole new Level. Sektor was able to link Missiles, 2 teleport-punches and 2 melee contacts in a seemingly small period. Johny cage can just ambush people with force balls and combos. Kung lao will be a great character with hit hat and teleport abilities combined with combos. I would immagine Mileena to be one of the best once mastered.

I am very glad to read Pred's notice of johny cage's fatality NOT being a portrait of Klose Kombat. It turned a great fight into a Rock-Paper-Scissors tournament. I feel it took much away. Test your might looks to be gone aswell which makes me very happy.

The one thing that I really liked was at the end of the trailer, when Kung Lao is about to finish off subzero, It DIDDN'T fade to black or grey in the background. The force of a fully lit area mixed with the blunt end of a life and the gore to ensue actually gave me a cringe. Its like seeing fresh roadkill on the road. Gives a new meaning to gritty and gory.

I feel Johny cage's fatality and what it is showing perhaps needed to be dark to really get the x-ray vision to be appealing. I would think they tooled around with this a bit before deciding so. Things like this are often the contributing factor. An all out external gore fest, I would Immagine would still be in the light as the Still form the MK E3 booth shows another Kung fatality looking to not be in a black area. The shine of the light in the gore would also probably play a factor with the new engine to seem more appealing and shocking.

Options

2v2 kombat looks amazing. The concept should have stayed since we went to 3d. This game being a great focus on online interaction and competition will pose great ambition for many users to come and compete whether it is friends or random people for fun. The one thing I hope for are the transitional moves/co-op moves to be able to be fluently integrated into the kombos as special moves are. this leaves open the option of chaining combos together with more than one character. In the right hands, this could be extremely deadly and interesting to watch. Somebody who experiments an in-depth view of the combo system will be absolutely unstoppable.

Faster Gameplay

This time around, I feel that the MK game should really focus on the dedicated player. goin 2D for a mechanical combat system was amazing. This prevents sidestepping spammers from just palying chicken until they get a clear shot. The fact that every attack will have to be jumped, ducked or blocked in the correct sequence is absolutely mouthwatering. The skilled players are going to shine in this game and there will be nobody to cheese players out anywhere as close to the amount of previous games. The people who play more will just keep getting better and better.

Roster

Looking at the roster clearly has a stress on MK1-MK3. This is where most of the diehards jumped in on the series. Characters like Reptile, Nightwolf, Kung Lao, Sektor, Mileena, Cage etc. are really a message from the team that they are paying attention to us this time around. We demanded a Revamped, more rooted-esque reptile and we got him. Nightwolf looks amazing, Sektor looks brutal, and Mileena looks like a babe as always. They have really targeted the icons of the franchise. I cannot wait to see scorpion and the rest of the characters.

CGI

We have always gotten usually one cool cut-scene in each game renderred by CGI. It seems that we are going to get something great this time around. Shao Kahn looked absolutely amazing and Raiden looks more Raw and pure. These characters are really being given the attention that they deserve and with the story mode, I feel its really going to come to life. If any of the game has CGI renderred as good as the trailer, we are in for one hell of a ride and all of us will gasp and have our fanboy minds blown at one point.

9.5/10 for me. -0.5 for not being longer. It should have been a 10. I will be the first in line for this game just absed off of the trailer. I cannot wait for further E3 coverage.

like:

returning characters new looks (for most of em)

new looks for old stages. some of them have a shaolin monks vibe to me.
i feel some need to be darker and some need to be lighter.

the return of actual fatalities.

new tag mode

dislike:

clunky looking gameplay that looks and sounds like a mkdc rehash with its re-used sounds and animations

the fact that some chars that shoulda been killed off are back,

sub-zeros mask is pretty much identical to the way it was in mkdc.

cages chest tattoo. wtf?

all and all i wasnt really impressed by it. to me it looks like mkdc without the dc.

A lot of "classicness."

Sektor and Reptile are in.

No crappy new characters. I'm not opposed to new characters, but c'mon, we've got over 60 characters as it is, MK needs a little focus. Even the old characters haven't been utilized to their full potential. If they can't get their bread and butter characters right, I don't care what kind of new characters they have to offer. Fix what you got before you add more.

Dislike:

Looks like the same engine, albeit a bit more polished graphically. Hopefully it's not as slow and clunky as the last few games have been. My first MK was MK3 and the first thing that struck me about it was how fast and brutal it was. I need to get that feeling again for the magic to come back.

The characters still look kind of plastic and the animation seems to have improved only slightly.

I really don't feel that it has to be 2D in order to return to the days of glory. If it is, fine, I can live with it, but there are plenty of brutal, hard hitting fighting games out there that are fully 3D.

It seems that gameplay is a huge focus this time around. I think this is a good move for the series. Mortal Kombat has dropped off the radar a little bit since some other fighting franchises adapted to the new era of video games a little better. Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter with their deeper engines, for example. It seems that this next MK is going to focus on being a "fun game," with tag mode, co-op and all that sort of thing. The roster is also indicative of that, including a lot of cult favourites.

I've never been the loudest supporter of a reboot -- but if attention is paid to the story, it could really be enhanced by a re-imaging like this. You can take out some redundant characters, and thus give others a bigger part. Reptile may not be a complete bitch this time out. Scorpion's story may not get fucked. I love Cyrax, don't get me wrong, but one of the only reasons we got both Sektor and Cyrax was because palette swapping was an easy way to create extra characters for MK3. If this is a reboot, then Sektor can be the one cybernetic ninja in this new continuity.

It also makes me hopeful that we may only get Sonya, and that Jax might miss out. And even though he is the "main hero," since we have Kung Lao, we don't really need Liu Kang. Since we've got Reptile, we don't really need Baraka. That sort of thing. Reptile can play of the role of Shao Kahn's chief warrior. The Sub-Zero/Noob Saibot/Scorpion triangle could play out in this game in a much more sensical sort of way.

Samples from the leaked voice actor casting sheet for you, sir:

[ MALE 5 ] (Sektor)
Race: Asian, becomes a Cyborg Country of origin: unknown Allegiance: neutral Voice: low, powerful, slight accent Age: 30s Male 5 is possibly the most ruthless of the secretive assassins. A technology enthusiast, he volunteered to be the first to undergo transformation to a cyborg. His enhanced skills and hard-hearted nature make him the perfect killing machine. He now searches for rogue clan members in order to bring them back to for cyber-conversion.

[ MALE 9 ] (Cyrax)
Race: African-American Allegiance: neutral, becomes a villain Age: 20s Male 9 is a member of the secretive ninja assassins’ guild. As such, he’s loyal to whoever pays him. Unlike his fellow members, however, there are certain lines he won’t cross. His interest in the guild seems to be waning, especially after learning of their plans to convert some of their members into cyborgs.

[ MALE 13 ] (Jax)
Race: African-American Allegiance: U.S. Special Forces (hero) Age: 30s Male 13 is the commander of a secret Special Forces unit. While pursuing a black-market arms dealer, he and his subordinate are forced to participate in the Mortal Kombat tournament. They try to complete their mission in the midst of otherworldly creatures wielding fearsome magical powers. He is built like a linebacker and is proficient in cutting-edge technology. Eventually his kombat skill is increased when his arms are replaced with super-powerful cybernetic prosthetics.

So you can see that not only are both cyborgs in it, but it'll be justified by illustrating their personality differences before conversion.

If anyone's gonna get fucked by someone thinking they're redundant, it's Smoke. But he's got the "Sub-Zero tragically loses his best friend" angle working in his favor.
In fact, here's something to consider: the team knows every character from the first three games has a LOT of fans who'll whine and complain if they get erased. The only ones they could possibly get away with leaving out are, like, Stryker and Rain, maybe Kintaro...

Yeah it's kinda dumb to try and play the "palette swap" card for Cyrax, and not use the same excuse as to why we shouldn't just get rid of Reptile, Scorp or Sub Zero, Ermac, Rain, Noob, Smoke, Sektor, Jade, Mileena, Khameleon, and Chameleon etc. in the process. They were all essentially palette swaps of one another in the beginning, but the fact is, they had different stories and different move sets as they developed. So I would have to disagree on getting rid of a character based on the fact that in the 2D days they were just a color swap of another character in terms of looks.

Absolutely agree with you. Palette swapping was something done out of necessity, not laziness. The arcade games and cartridges could only hold so much data, and palette swapping was an easy way to include more characters while making the most of that limited space.

Also, did we really need Rain in MKT? Fuck that guy >_>

Liked:

Characters most of my favourites were in the trailer. The refined looks were great. I liked some of the details on characters for example Sektor's jets on his back.

Stage/Arenas were the standout for me. The volcano, characters and movement in the background.

Gameplay being back in 2D and looking much faster like MK1-3.

The darker tone seems good too.

Return of Fatalities

CGI intro looked great

Tag mode

Dislikes:

Although I liked the characters looks they seemed a bit cartoony.

Some stiff animations

Lack of blood, however I'm assuming its just for the trailer. The real reveal of the gore will be saved for E3.

After watching it about 20 times, i won't lie. The trailer for MkvsDC had me more in suspense mainly cause we never seen a cross over game with MK before. Violence doesn't attract me to any game anymore as it did when I was a kid, mainly for the fact that I never seen any of that when I was young and now I seen so much its not something that makes me go, WOW I really gotta play this cause I want to see it. Sure its all great and awesome but it won't win me over if the gameplay sucks or isn't better than previous MK games.

Does it look like a fun game? Sure, but imo it really has to be fun to play and honestly, yeah the graphics really should be on par with other fighting games as the gameplay should be smooth as well.

Will I buy it? Hell yes I will, mainly cause I am a hard core MK fan like the most of you and I love playing a new MK game. So after watching it, I am sure the finish product will still have issues and at the end of the day things promised or talked about at E3 won't show up and some stuff that gets shown that looks really cool will probably get taken out for no reason whatsoever like what happen to MKvsDC(im am talking about the graveyard stage). And even though it may end up being the best MK game(only your opinion will tell that) not all fans will be happy and even I will bet there will be things that probably should have been added or fixed that won't or we will hear about a patch that never officially gets announced but some of us will talk about like it did and bitch why their not patching it.

Anyways lol I am getting ahead of myself but I bet so much that even the finish product will probably look just like this has their track record has shown before. But only time will tell.

For me, with WB backing them and I bet they are, there's really no excuse for this game to be a f*** up and theres no excuse not to have a patch this time around to fix issues. Oh and by backing them up i mean, giving them time and money to ensure the best MK game possible.

At the end of the day, I hope they do enough to please as much of the fans as they can to where we all just have fun playing it and hope they do the best job they can to not have infi combos.

I'm just worried that if this is a reboot, they're going to wreck the story worse than MKSM did. That, and I wanted to see a sequel to MKA and find out what happened after that. The thing I keep coming back to though, is Ed Boon swearing up and down that this game would be as new and fresh as possible, and then he cranks out a trailer that's the exact opposite of that. We'll see, I guess. I should know better than to trust Boon's hype machine.
