Way to early to judge that
To me its just how they implemented the graphics with the engine. I think they were trying to create a new look with the Unreal Engine kind of like how the game Bioshock did. But I would of preferred it looking just like GOW.
However it is too early to judge it right now.

if anything the graphics and the gameplay will be or are supposed to be one of the best parts of the game.

I looked at the videos and much like everyone else I was shocked... not because of the DC characters but at how bad the graphics and animations looked. Seriously I was expecting graphics on the level of SC4 and saw something that looked very ps2 like. Then to top it off the characters were fighting very stiffly, just like in MKA. WTF? I thought they were using the Unreal engine? They aren't getting my $60, I'm going to buy SC4 and enjoy it. MK is done.

as the designers of soul calibur are known for saying, they strive to keep the soul series in a graphics level that others just cannot achieve, which is mostly true. amazingly, they can usually bring the gameplay to the same astonishing level as the graphics (minus sc3). that said, after mk3 i was never into mk for the graphics since polygons werent as impressive as realistic sprites. i was into mk for what made mk...well...mk...and i think we have all been over what that is, whether people agree or disagree. but i agree, first impressions of the new mk "unreal 3" graphics are...not quite so unreal to me, if ya know what i mean. and i will at least throw this bone to those in love with this new mk...as much as i love soul calibur series....even they have soul calibur legends, a deep dent in their usually glistening suit of armor. but, mk has had more than just 1 dent, it has had too many now. the mk suit of armor is now rusted and ready for the scrap pile.

soul calibur kicks fucking ass. I doubt MK will beat it in gameplay or graphics.
But still.. mk has a lot of awesome shit to offer.. and I don't know what you're talking about.. the trailer seems to really show potential gameplay and graphics wise, dude.
It might not be as good as sc.. but why compair? why don't you just wait until you can see something that actually shows enough for you to judge to start saying "oh, that looks lame".
and darthvader/yoda? I don't see how that's any less sell-outy than MK vs DCU

I could totally understand and relate to a lot of the negativity -- until people start explaining their disappointment...
I've seen venom for the graphics elsewhere, and I'm really surprised.
Especially for MK it seems like they've really stepped it up. The character designs aren't looking great, but the quality of graphics is pretty impressive! I would've thought the preview would've been a real reassurance to those reticent about the Unreal Engine...

I think that's part of the problem right there. It's hard to tell considering we're 7 months away from release, but the models still had that stiff, MKA movement to them...Anyone remember how stiff Kintaro was in MKA? I can wait a while before [passing judgement, but right now, I'm not really impressed.
My personal opinion, which may have SOME merit considering I'm studying computer animation right now, is that the graphics were alright, but underwhelming compared to the competition.
The Unreal Engine does NOT guarantee a good looking game. Midway's own Area 51: Blacksite game proved that you can make a pretty ugly game with the software.
The trailer looked decent, but the fighters moved very robotically, the textures were dark and polygons surprisingly low. It was like watching two dark-hued rock'em sock'em robots duking it out.
I expected more, but being the graphics scholar I am, I was probably spoiled by Soul Calibur's jaw dropping graphics and animation, and Unreal Engine 3.5's Gears of War demo, among others.

I mean the conceptual design more than the models, but I can appreciate what you're saying. After Deception's stiff, narrow character builds, I was actually pretty happy with Armageddon in comparison and still am with MKvsDC.
I tend to expect that sort of stance from Sub-Zero, and I think really the cape is what's casting the illusion of stiffness in Batman. It'd be nice to see some more character put into the cape, if the new physics can allow for it. Something that plays more with the way the character uses the cape asthetically, rather than keeping it swept back like it is.

You gotta be good with patterns.
Why compare?
Because so far....even in the their teaser trailer, MK is not even on par with SC4, or Tekken 6, or VF5. They're not ever close. Listen, they are not-even-close.
Look, go search Youtube for an old MK behind the scenes vid...voice acting even...and you can tell, that in this teaser that we have now, Calos Pesina(guy who was Raiden in the Early games) is the one doing all the voice acting....in this teaser. Batman AND Sub-Zero,is what it sounds like.
How hard is it...to get someone else in the booth, to scream for 2min of recording for the sake of diversifying the vocal cast?
I got SC4 on pre-order already?!? Why do I question renting MK8?
What for? MK Most consistently dwarfs SC....this is ridiculous. I should be at the store, 4am asking if I can pre-order MK8 already, and that is far from the case...
I should be trying to convince you to buy this game.

Sometimes, I wonder what the other fighting game forums' fans argue over...
"Guile's hair should so be longer!"
"Why are Ivy's boobs so big?"
"Hey DBZ fans, heard about MK vs DC? Why couldn't WE get Goku to fight Superman instead! That would rock!"

I've been bitching about fairly similer issues on the Capcom boards, a lot.
I personally think the entire industry is suffering under the license design houses are given by an audience becoming increasingly young.
I think we're at the point where the market share has officially clicked in to a new generation that doesn't quie have the scope or interest in well developed and conceptually grounded products. Combine that, for long running franchises, with changing design teams and complacency, and you get a lot of homogenization and loss of identity in the industry.
On the hole the emphasis seems to have drifted far away from story and concept, too. I think most of the beat 'em up franchises are suffering these complaints to varying degrees. It just so happens MK has slammed it out of the park with what could be perceived as the biggest betrayal for an established brand.
Personally I feel pretty safe in the thought that the MK team has control of the game and will definitely be maintaining the asthetic and concept of MK characters, despite the intrusion of another medium. I think it's going to be DC that makes the most compromise, largely due to their limited involvement.
Street Fighter, on the other hand, looks to be pottering away without good understanding of the brand, and a lot of mixed intentions... BUT I DIGRESS!...
This is my first post on this forum but not the first visit. Being a huge fan of the MK serries, this is the first time when I feel the need to say something about Mortal Kombat and all this because of the bad news that took the fans by storm in the past couple of days.
It's needless to say that this MK could be the biggest failure of the serries and that this could kill the classic concept of the MK universe. On the other hand, we all might have a big surprise and actually enjoy the game and accept the (ridiculous) cross-over idea that the Midway team came up with. One funny thing I'm expecting to see is Superman, wearing his classic red underwear over his strech pants, fighting any of the MK characters.
To stay on topic, I would say that the graphics look good, but not amazing. One thing I noticed is the lack of facial expretions, especially on the face of Batman. I've colected a few images from the trailer vid and you can see here http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u176/The_Kruger/MKvsDC.jpg what I'm talking about. But I was happy to see that there is blood in this game. It loks dark and kinda violent but I didn't say "WOW!" when after watching the trailer for the first time and, in my oppinion, this is a big minus when it comes to appreciate a game's appearel.
The gameplay. It is very rational to think that it's too early to talk about this and any comments would be just stupid and pointless.

I'm in these games for the character and story, and I've always joined the moral majority in kinda looking down my nose at the gore and silliness of the violence -- especially around fans who seem to just get off on that.
That said, I think my argument of homogenization really has to acknowledge that that's a big part of the MK identity, and they shouldn't lose that. Fortunately, I think MKvsDC is still going to represent a lot of the violence and cheap tricks the series is known for, albeit without the death toll. So, like I said, in a strange way I think MK has the least to worry about.
SF is wandering in the dark, and Tekken, another series I'm a big fan of, seems to be stuck in it's own rut, as well.

Garlador...dbz is a pretty awesome fighter...control wise its a bit basic but its fast and the graphics dont have to be spectacular because its anime. im curious to see what dbz will bring to the next gen consoles. (speaking of burst limits) hopefully the view isnt the same as tenkaichi 2 & 3. i havent looked or seen it yet.
on another note to get back on topic...as far as graphics go from what i saw of the trailor...the graphics were alright. what made the graphics look better was the falling and the movement surrounding the characters.

Firstly, mkflegend your comments on Soul Calibur are so wrong they gave me cancer.
The whole point of the trailer is to excite the viewer and doesn't do that for me. Not because its MK Vs DC. The gameplay doesn't seem to have moved on from Armageddon that much.
The animation still looks too rigid and unhuman.
But this is based on some 30 seconds of gameplay from the trailer. Its too early to say until E3.
The graphics really aren't all that impressive for this game. Especially when you compare them to VF5 and SCIV which run on the same console. They don't even look as good as its TNA Impact! cousin.
I hope that I'm wrong and the E3 build fixes the issues with the game but don't delude yourself by saying the game looks graphically better than its rivals, at this point in time. Because it just isn't.

please point out what is bad about the graphics and point out what is bad about the gameplay.
No you cant do that from a small trailer.
So make this thread again when there is some high-res footage and a real gameplay movie, then you can tell us wich graphical effects SC4 have that MK VS DCU is lagging, thank you.
rather then compare graphics with other games, i world rather compare with older mk games, and there is a world of difference.
so please do that and not say: shit shit shit shit... : )
