Ok, as someone who's messed around with MUGEN four or five years back, I can warn you about two things:

1) It's stupid. I don't mean that as an insult to the program because it's surprisingly malleable. But it's stupid as far as how the characters work.

Balance is damn near impossible. And we're not talking minor instances of imbalance. We're talking Character A being a cut-and-paste of Ryu from Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Character B having a jab that combos into itself, a throw that does 50%, and an unblockable projectile. And that's not even taking into account that he probably also has a one button super attack that hits the entire screen, breaks through a guard, and gives you a seizure to boot.

This might be a result of a bad MUGEN community hell bent on having bouts of 999 hit combos but the end result is the need to essentially build your characters from scratch because most of the existing ones are ludicrously overpowered trash.

2) Since you have to build your characters from scratch because decent ones online are few and far between, you're now stuck doing all the busy work calculating frames and collision boxes. It's doable but it's slow. This is especially true if you have to redraw every frame.

Take the sprite I made for myself:



I used Leo from Red Earth and changed him up from there. It didn't take too long.

But Capcom's sprites often have 70-100 frames of animation. And those are CPS2 sprites. I expect CPS3 ones like Leo to have more.

SNK sprites from the King of Fighters games can have around 200 frames.

Some basic math: I'm not an artist so I'm not exactly a crackshot at sprite editing. But the one frame I did took maybe 20 minutes. If Leo has even 150 frames (a very low number considering the fluidity of CPS3) that's 50 hours of work for just the sprite alone.

All in all, that's a lot of editing if you want a "complete" character. MUGEN may give a lot of freedom but it does little to alleviate the tedium. In fact, it's extremely tedious because once all the sprites are drawn and hitboxes noted, you have to go through and calculate speed, damage values, and other stuff which are a pain and a half because you're constantly "playtesting" to make sure no moves are either overpowered or totally useless. And this is only for the characters. If you want custom backgrounds and a custom GUI (rather than ripping ones straight from an existing fighting game) that's even more work involved.

I'm not looking to discourage anybody but I do want everyone to understand that this won't be easy and could take months to complete even 10 characters if only one or two people are doing the work.

Why of course it's an edit. Still needs some work too as a matter of fact but, yea.

Took a couple hours to do all the frames. Animating it was easy for me.

Oh, that original sprite is in this thread somewhere. I never play KOF but, the guys name is apparently Mukai. I'll see how I feel after one or two super moves. So yea, I'm gonna try some moves. Worst come to worst, I'll have some sprites of myself to play with.

Dunno if you still need char's, but here's a quick edit I did. (Its a full sheet...)

Special Moves would be the the special moves on the sheet.
Super Moves would be a quick combo ending with a standing version of the special moves. (Example from SF3... Starts at :30.)
Super move would be accented with fire, specials wouldn't.

So... yeah.

I'll work on the sprite later. I just got the idea of a tan Sagat with a black fade hair cut, a tanktop, athletic shorts, you know, the works.

EDIT: Got the spirte. Finished it in twenty minutes on paint, so don't be too impressed >_>

Just throw in a gray tanktop, and I'll be set. eh, making the pants and hair look better wouldn't hurt either =P


Defensive, bulky, slow, long range and strong. You know, the works. Since everyone is going to pick some quick character, I might as well be original and standout. Besides, I am supah muscular and powahful!

Specials. I'll include input commands and whatnot.

Diving Powerbomb - A short ranged (the character can short hop forward) grab. My character grabs the opponent, jumps into the air, and powerbombs the opponent. Simple enough. Put a little bit of lag if I miss.

Input: Down, Forward, Kick
Damage: High

Vacuum Wave - Exactly like Sonic Boom.

Input: Down, Forward, Punch
Damage: Low

Rising Air German Suplex - My character leaps into the air in a grabbing motion, grabs the opponent, and lands a German Suplex. Just your average air coverage attack.

Input: Forward, Down, Forward, Punch
Damage: Medium

Supers:

Power Wave - Just like Guile's Super Art in MvC2. The one where he unleashed a Sonic Boom that comes out, spins around a lot around Guile, and deals high damage.

Input: Down, Forward, Two Punch buttons at the same time (like how MvC supers are)

Incredible Power - My character dashes forward, grabs the opponent, and unleashes a devestating combo, then finishes with a giant uppercut. While the opponent is flying in the air, my character taunts by flexing (AHHH YEAH!)

Input: Down, Forward 2 Kick buttons at the same time

Falcon Pawnch - My character does a close range Falcon Punch for a ton of damage. Simple and awesome

Input: Charge Back, Forward punch

Hypers:

Downword Spiral - Jumps halfway across the screen, grabs the opponent, and jumps up high into the air with them, then comes crashing into the ground with the opponent. So basically a super awesome Charizard like Seismic Toss. XD

Input: Down, Back, Down, Back Punch and Kick

I'll try to get some sprites of what I want the animations to look like. Good luck trying to make this one, you're earning a ton of respect from me =P

Umm, yeah, I'm gonna go with glitch. I figured, hey, short range, but she uses MOD POWAZ to attack, guess it didn't go over well

You can give me an idea of a stage you want, and I've been having trouble with music on MUGEN, but I'll try to fix it. By the way, I'm home, so expect a completed Pink_Ranger by the end of the week.

Well now, I more than triple checked everything (waay more than triple checked), and I still can't get PR in Mugen for some reason. Everything matches, and there's even a slot for her with her name on the select screen that I can toggle.

However, I can't see the sprite, and I can't select her.

Maybe someone can tell me what I did or didn't do that was wrong?

I'm done with my select screen pose thing, but I'll have to upload it later.

currently, I have yet to implement a render or select screenpic (sorry, it's a beta) just pick it, and if it doesn't work, go into data>select.def and make sure in the characetrs section you have "Pink_Ranger" typed in and have Pink_Ranger in the char folder

I just tried pink ranger for myself and the character doesn't work.
