Instead of making new threads for Boon's riddles and hints via twitter, lets sticky this one and start posting them all in here for discussion.

- @noobde (Ed Boon)
- @MK_MortalKombat (Official MK)
- @MK_Online (Mortal Kombat Online)

Thoughts?

Have at it.

Hold it....this:

Ed Boon On Twitter!

Granted it's in the General Forum, not too far from the top of the page. There's still alot more stuff in there than in all these little threads put together.

Hm... although, let me see if there's anything else we can do as far as the Future Forum folks. Maybe move that main one, or use something like that Universal Ed Boon on Twitter thread....Until then, I'm gonna close these little threads. There's just no need for the flood.

/thread

for the time being.....i'm gonna go check some stuff out first, but i will leave this one open for right now in case we do wanna just use this one. It seems like a sound resolution to me but just gimme a sec to come to a conclusion.

Hmm from what I can see on Ed Boons twitter they are using a new fighting engine, not an altogether new engine. I guess this means we're still on Unreal engine but with new combat mechanics. Which sounds awesome! XD

It does indeed sound awesome. At least this shows they're really taking this game seriously. I can't wait for the first bit of news

thePred...I see where your pervious thread is relevant but in reality, when MK9 is revealed, not many will check the "general" forum and Boon will likely post new shit via twitter so an official thread in the "future MK9 forums" seems like a likely go. Please consider.

i rarely check the general if at all. if i do its not for anything MK9 related. a sticky for it is needed in future games also...period. what conclusion do you need? i think it is common sense really.
twitter is for general chat yes,but news on twitter regarding MK9 is future MK right? so there ya go...no brainer. i am with ya on this one TODAY.

because the other thread is closed

@mkreptile8860

U could be right. But like said above, they might use the unreal engine but a totally different fighting mechanic. According to boon's twitter;

@Guitmaster When u say u aren't using the same engine, u mean modified or completely different? Noobde: No I mean FIGHTING engine.

i dont remember where i heard it or read it but i remember stuff being said about either a newly written engine is being applied to a few newer games at the WB...one of them that was mentioned that i can remember was EMotion FX. might not be anything to do with MK9 though. might be an engine to support new games for gaming involving the move or natal but where i was reading about it...it was stating that it was 2D fighter type games that the engine makes.(Edit: or was being planned to be made i should say.)
if i find the site again i will post a link...i found it through searching WB 3d game engine development. (Edit 2: i can't seem to find it but i think it was on http://www.devmaster.net)

EMotion FX is a realtime character animation system that can be applied to Unreal 3's 3D Engine.

It's pretty obvious Boon is talking about the fighting mechanics.
The game engine is still the Unreal 3 engine, which is fine with me as it ran pretty smoothly in Mk vs DCU.
They wouldn't use the U3 engine for some of the game and another engine for the fighting, that makes no sense at all.

Im not convinced the unreal engine is that good for fighters but we shall see.
MKDC wasnt bad but it was stiff and unspectacular engine needs a lot of work.

Every 3d MK game or actually every Mk game, have been a bit on the stiff side. So that haven't got anything to do with the Unreal engine. That's just how the Mk games are made in general, at least till now.

I like the idea of having a Twitter thread in the future section. I drift to some other sections every now and then, but for the most part I'm always in this cozy little nook of the site.

As for the engine... I really hope that Boon & Co don't just trash the MKvsDC fighting engine and start over from scratch.

For one thing, the core engine wasn't bad. Sure, in terms of 3D fighters, it wasn't going to make you forget about how smooth and precise Virtua Fighter is, how fantastic the regular moves are in Soul Calibur or how deep Tekken is or how fast DOA is (or the counter/parry systems for any of those games).

But...

I think that MKvsDC's fighting engine is worth building off of. Take out the stupid rage meter, the free fall kombat, the running through walls and the rock em sock em robots... err, Klose kombat and what are you left with? A solid fighter that while not great, has the FOUNDATION to be a fun experience.

The multitude of special moves (which I hope they expand upon even more in the next game), the pro moves, the combo system... All of those things were among the best parts of an MK fighting system to come along in years.

I think that there are some fairly easy ways to make the system better:

1) Balance characters by giving some counters, escapes and parrys. Every character should have at least one of each.

2) Differentiate characters by adding throws. In other words, one character might use more throws if he's a wrestler, one might use more throws if he's a stereotypical pro wrestler character (not in favor of this in MK), one might use joing locks if he's an MMA type of character or a judo specialist etc.

Each character should have at least 4 throws, but there should also be characters that specialize in grappling or using an opponents momentum against them.

3) Differentiate the regular moves. In other words, have a set of moves that are meant to be part of kombo strings, your standard punches and kicks that you see in every MK game up until now.

But then have another level of moves between these punches/kicks and the special moves. This would character specific moves, or moves specific to that character's style, but they're not flying kicks or teleports or fireballs etc.

They'd be things like cartwheel kicks, double jump kicks, flip kicks, a hard power punch or a quick fury of punches. Types of moves that are useful and fun to look at, perhaps move that could have their own small combos and interact with the kombo punch/kicks and the special moves, but overall, they'd really work to give the character a style all their own.

In my mind, you'd only need about 20 of these moves per character.

Some of this might sound like MK:DA and to an extent I guess it does, but instead of giving Cage one double flip kick and that's the only "special regular move." You give each character 20 of these move/combo/throws etc.

To me, that's a lot of depth without having to absolutely scrap the previous system completely and start over from scratch.

I'm more or less worried that if they start over from scratch, we'll have to wait for that progression. You know, MK1 was good but MK2 was everything that MK1 was only bigger, better and more refined. Same goes with UMK3 vs MK3 or MK:D vs MK:DA.

I've been waiting around for a new true sequel for MK for forever now, I don't want the first decent game, I want the game with the improved/perfected system! grin

Yep this thing is something I noticed too. He's making it so the answers appear in his timeline instead of doing it as a reply. That is no coincidence. We must be getting close now.
