Original article here.

Exact quote from Boon:

"...the game spans Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3, retelling the story with an enlightened Raiden, and he's changing the course of things, so everything you've seen happen before – Liu Kang winning, the guys turning into cybernetic ninjas, are changed around, so you might see a character become cybernetic who wasn't before, and so you see a different version [of events]."

I guess that means that either Cyrax or Smoke will not be a robot, and perhaps another major character will be? Stryker, anyone?

Wow. Thoughts?

It's talking about Smoke who was not a cyber-ninja during MK2 but became one just before MK3.

You know, when I figured this to be a remake, I was ready to forgive a lot, but now that we're screwing with the canon story, I'm no longer comfortable with this.

It turns out we have a sequel/remake/reboot all happening at the same time.
Edit: IVLIVS, could you elaborate what you mean?

Didn't they do this in MK Conquest? Where Raiden goes back in time and sets events in a different way to save everyone?

In my scowling grumpy about a reboot mind, this suggests that it's a post-Armageddon re-do of the universe. Which would make me only slightly less grumpy about it.

Y'know, I REALLY hate the idea of either Smoke staying human or Sub-Zero ending up a cyborg.

That better have been an example off the top of his head and not something that happens in the actual game.

Absolutely. If Smoke doesn't get automated, his gimmick as the tragic victim is basically gone.

And Subzero a cyborg? The fan reaction might be fun, but otherwise, hell no, hell no, and hell no.

Well, you guys realize we've already seen Sub-Zero and he's not a cyborg so that's out the door. Ed may have just been making a "what if" to give us an idea of what he was talking about. He's always loved to play games like that, so I would take the statement with a grain of salt.

There are a few changes I'd be able to tolerate under the whole "Raiden knows the future and is deliberately changing it" excuse, but I just...

I hate Human Smoke as a character. I always have. And I've hated people who wanted him to go back to being Human Smoke even worse. He was a complete ripoff of Scorpion but wearing gray, what the fuck was ever cool about that?

And the idea of a Cyborg Sub-Zero would basically ruin Subbie for me.

This is true, but it could be something that occurs deep into the story mode, with the cyber form becoming his alt costume.

Many have speculated that Smoke's capture was due to helping Subzero escape. Perhaps now it's the reverse.

It sais a character who WASNT cybernetic before may BECOME cybernetic.

this shouldn't have to do with anybody but smoke if they dont plan on f***ing with everything.

Something interesting I really diddnt wanna know before... I seen a picture of subzero, and he has no scar on his eye. This is recycled, somebody look at MKvsDC, if he ahs a scar there, then somethings up with him this time arounmd, maybe the original and the brother actually is turned??

I am still calling "Smoke" on this. and its way too early to even start freakign out until we know more. where was this quote from??

Logically, If a character from MK1 or 2 became a cyborg, he wouldn't START the game as one. They'd have to create a before version and an after version.

sad furious sad

I'm not sure I like the sound of that......at all.

I expected SOME changes, BIG and SMALL, but I also expected them to remain truthful and loyal to the canon storyline.

This is basically ("kind of") talking about some form of "time-travel" (not literally, of course) where things get twisted around because one character (Raiden) knows what's going to happen.

I don't want to see the original story altered and have Liu Kang NOT winning the original tournament.

What's next? Kano never makes it to the boat, so, he basically doesn't exist in this time-line? Kung Lao is the one who beats Shang Tsung? or is it one of the predictable ninjas? Jax never gets his cyber arms? etc etc etc? I know these are rather stupid examples, but, geezz, I'm upset they are not respecting the original storyline.

I'm find with adding changes such as SOMEHOW giving Ashrah or Kenshi a reason to be around these events, but NOT by suddenly having a new champion, etc.

Hmmmmm.

Not to be rude, but I have a hard time believing they'd make a game in depth enough where the alternate costumes are "MK3" appearances and the main costumes represent MK1-MK2.

If there were to be a cyborg Sub-Zero, he would more likely be a separate, perhaps even hidden character, than an alt costume. Since he'd have to have different animations for robotic versions of his special moves.

By the way, if we really are going to take that quote from Ed literal, than the only other character that fits this option is none other than: JAX.

Hasn't he been turning into some robotic-machine for the past few games? MKA's Konquest hint this and his ending confirms it. And we got more of this in MKvsDC.

Maybe its Jax.....maybe it was just a "what if", a simple example.

Obviously it means cyborg Hydro is confirmed.

Possibly the dreaded master of cyber-organic-mega-powers, The Kombatant, as well. Duhz.

LMAO its always nice to tweak a few things just to make the story feel fresh in a remake of whatever, but lol wow I dunno about that though. If subzero turned into a bot I would be like, wow and or if smoke does not, just lol wow. Whatever though, not the end of the world though or maybe it is i dunno lol

Kano
Jax
Smoke

But I think he was just giving an example of the kinds of changes that are being made.

And wait a minute....Raiden's finally omnipotent?

YAY!

IMO, Raiden won MK:A, discontented with the way things had shaped up to be, he decides "What the hey, let's do it all again, if I don't like something, I'll change it, IT'S FOR EARTHREALM!"

EDIT: Nvm, just read the article, that's kinda cool I guess

Here's another thing that just occured to me and strikes me as odd.

So Ed says that the game's story starts at the end of Armageddon, with Raiden trying to basically prevent that from coming to pass.

Well all the terrible stuff in the MK universe that led to Armageddon happening wasn't even caused by MK1-3 characters, it was caused by Quan Chi and Shinnok.

MK3 had a Good Ending for all the good guys the first time around. Raiden can really only screw it up.
