I sat there in blind shock as B_C stormed in. He grabbed the gun out of my mouth, and was talking his usual annoying babbel. 'Was I really about to shoot myself over one mission?' I thought.

"Wow, I am pathetic. I said aloud. B_C replied with another one of his snide comments, and I snapped. I grabbed the pistol from the floor and held it to his face.

The Nurse is her office, now you have three seconds to leave. One.... two... By that time, B_C, not really afraid, just walked out.

I smiled at the thought of being called a lunatic. I got fully dressed, deposited the weapons at the armory, and stopped by the General's office. He wasn't in there quite yet, so I placed the boat on his desk, before stepping out. I wanted to releave some stress.

I headed over to the Training room, and to my surprise, and dismay, X was in there, with a set of goggles on his head. I picked up my goggles, and linked ours.

He was startled at being pulled from his simulation into my dueling one, but the surprise ended quick.

Payback's a bitch. I said before charging.

Guys, later today, I'm gonna give everyone a sort of breakdown of the mission. I wanna talk about how things went, the good, the bad, the kinda good but a little bad if you really think about it, and the very bad but good in a weird kind of way.

The large, fluorescent set of four red numbers on the wall of the Debriefing Room shows "11:34 PM". It's mildly late, and even the biggest party animal on Earth would want to fall onto a bed after withstanding a mission like the one in Hobart. Still, the agents who took part in the case come in as a group the moment the door is unlocked.

I watch them walk in showing no emotion just yet. I notice that Soul_Stealer, Keith, and naturally X, have a few bruises and scratches on their faces.

I position myself atop the dais of the room, next to an enhanced projector, clear my throat, and begin to speak to the group.

"First thing I want to do is ask that you all hold your comments or statements until the end of this brief session.

Anyway, before I speak of each one of the Rookies in the room individually, I want to mention the mission as a whole.

What everything boils down to is that the mission was a success in the end, and regardless of the means, the end result was great."

I project an image of Mount Wellington on the silver wall.

"We discovered that the abnormal readings we had been picking up were caused by a group of men who had been unsuccessfully trying to open a portal on Mount Wellington. They were using this..."

The crystal emerges.

"... to make it happen in secrecy. I can't tell you what this crystal is or how it works just yet. It's being studied carefully by our top researchers, and all information will be revealed to you when the time comes. What we do know is that it is of alien origin and something within it can weaken the barriers of two realms, bringing forth a clear path between them.

We also know that this item was brought here to Earth by a being from a realm called Vaeternus, which is filled with some fanged sons of bitches that are apparantly dying to make our world their personal McDonalds. Luckily, said being has been killed and all threats similar to the one he posed have gone with him, at least for now.

All in all, I am very happy with how this mission turned out. You are all here, safe and sound, the enemy has been eliminated, and we even got a bonus."

I flash a big smile that gradually dies out.

"Now let's break this mission down into pieces... not all of which are as excellent as the results."

My eyes roam each of the faces before me, carefully, scrutinizing the expressions on them. I stop at Soul_Stealer.

"S_S, how are you feeling?"

Soul_Stealer (puzzled): "Good..."

"Good."

I think for a few seconds. Soul_Stealer begins to look around at the others warily.

"Well, I wanna say that I admired what you went through and what you did during the mission in Hobart. You drew up an interest on some shady night club down there, is that right? I have to tell you that that was a bit... strange, to tell you the truth. I honestly didn't see where the sudden interest came from and why you were so caught up with that night club. Still, you eventually found out, after a while, that it had little to do with the mission. So that was the only 'minus' in your mission, if you ask me.

Although you kind of strayed off into an unknown path, you still did accomplish a few things that I was gladly impressed by. The highlight was when you found yourself cornered by that so, so depressing Black Dragon and his goons. I honestly feared for your life right there, and I told myself not to be surprised if you left that nightclub with a few limbs missing. But you handled yourself better than I expected from a Rookie in their first tight situation. Eventually, the goons were put to sleep... no one's gonna miss them... and the Black Dragon thug himself was tied up, if I'm not mistaken. Now, I don't know if you'll agree with me or not, but I think that B.D. thug would be much more useful to us HERE, imprisoned and spilling some secrets, than back at the nightclub waiting for his boss to get out of the joint.

All in all, I feel like you were an asset to the mission despite the fact that you steered on the wrong way for a while. You did find out X's and Keith's whereabouts when they got the leads and joined them in time to jump back into the right path, and a few of those Black Dragons were filled with holes, so I enjoyed following your progress."

With a nod, I signal to Soul_Stealer the end of my words to him. My eyes resume their journey, excavating into the emotions the agents are allowing to seep through and onto their features.

"X, let's get you out of the way."

X straightens his posture... damn, I was expecting a little grin at my slight bit of sarcasm. I shoot him a dirty look before addressing him.

"I'm not gonna call you the 'hero' of the story because this ain't no damn comic book, and you already know that you technically went the furthest in the mission.

I particularly enjoyed "following" you throughout the past few days. The 'situations' you got yourself in and the events that happened to you were all very useful, and also very entertaining. I'm not gonna lie, I did chuckle just a little bit when you got hit by the car chasing after that brat, but I'm pretty sure that even YOU would laugh at that right now. I may be exagerating a little bit, or I might not, when I say that I was at the edge of my seat almost 100% of the time when monitoring you. Sure, the parts where you were making your bed or wandering around your hotel room were pretty boring, as it was for everyone else, but all the times when you were out of that bedroom and putting work into the mission, I was anxious to see where you were going to go and what you were going to do next.

I wanna get specific for a second and say that I admired the actions you took to make sure you discovered as much as you could and DID as much as you could. You going after that brat ... Ryan was his name, right? Well, you going after that brat as soon as you knew where he was staying is a good example. You handled the encounter with the suspect Reynold exceptionally as well. Using just enough force to subdue the suspect so that you could draw the information from him is exactly how I expect top operatives of the agency to act in a similar situation. Considering that kind of... went down the drain for reasons I will get to eventually... you still got just enough out of Reynold to put the last pieces of the puzzle together and wrap up the case.

The way you acted when you came face-to-face with the enemy was also impressive, in my opinion. You showed no fear, you stood your ground, and you didn't hesitate to charge into battle, even though that was probably your first clash with an otherwordly being. The 'climax', if you will, of the mission was more eventful and more surprising than I anticipated when I sent you to Hobart, but partially thanks to your actions during, everything ended as it should have."

My gaze shifts a couple seats over... to Barakaz_cuz. He pretends to be amazed by the mural on the wall beside him. Hm... he's convincing! Almost fooled me into letting him off the hook for now.

"B_C, I have absolutely no idea what happened to you in Hobart. I honestly feared that you had been kidnapped or you got lost in some random forest and we were never gonna find you again.

When I saw you detach yourself from the group with such perseverance and go after the owner of that plant place, I honestly thought to myself: 'Hm, it's very possible that he's gonna take the lead in this mission and end up shutting the case very soon.' And after that, I never got a request from your cam again! Really, I can't possibly imagine what happened to you or what you got caught up doing, but it was kind of sad that I unwillingly forgot about you during this mission. Maybe it would've been best if you had sat this one out?

On the plus side, you WERE the first one to hear about the disappearence, unless I'm mistaken. But the other agents' shadows fell over that discovery a couple hours later. That's all I think I wanted to say."

I get the strange feeling B_C wanted to respond, but following my primary request, he contended himself with a silent motion of his head. Sitting two seats over was sibunad.

"Sibunad, the biggest plus from you in the Hobart mission was that you were really trying. Granted you didn't gather that much information, I did see hints of effort in your attempts to do so. Personally, I'd rather see an agent not reach his goal completely, but TRY to, rather than the agent just giving up or turning the other cheek. So congrats on that department.

Next time you find yourself lost or unsure of what to do next, contact another one of the agents that have been sent with you. Most of the times, two or more agents will be sent to investigate a situation for the purpose of backing each other up and helping each other out. So in future mission, count on your comrades in times of desperation. Another advice I could give you is to never assume that a certain situation is the right one to look into just because it seems suspicious. I say this thinking back to when you tried to draw information from workers in an ambulance, carrying a patient.

Overall, it was good to see that you were active.

Now last but not least...

Keith shifts in his seat. Was he falling asleep?

"Keith, I think you started out very well, taking the lead in the mission for a moment. It was unfortunate that you let that slip from your hands with recklessness.

Let's review: you were the very first person to realize that Mount Wellington harbored something. In fact, we now know that Mount Wellington played the biggest part in this mission, so in a way, you uncovered the most important, hidden fact Hobart had to offer.

When you arrived at Mount Wellington, however, your methods of handling the situation were, for lack of a better word, crude. Words that come to mind are 'exageration' and 'unecessary actions'. We're all human beings in this Earth, whether here or in Australia; no one in this planet can talk when they're an inch from death. And unfortunately, that's exactly where you put the most vital piece of the puzzle: Reynold. You now know that Reynold, although a direct suspect, was the one who knew everything we needed to know. What I THOUGHT you were going to do is go in there, attack Reynold, and subdue him in order to ask the questions. What I saw, though, was completely different: you purposively went to the limit and beyond with how you attacked Reynold, and as a consequence, you were left behind in the mission and the "show was stolen" from you for the life you claimed prematurely.

I don't think I need to keep talking, not only because you look very sleepy, but also because I think you know where I'm getting at better than I or anyone else. So in conclusion, beautiful work climbing up the hill, but tearful defeat rolling down the other side.

That's all for this debriefing, Rookies. Once again, I am very happy with the results of this mission. You are dismissed, but feel free to speak with me before leaving. I'm staying up all night tonight."

I gave one last look at Leo, shaking my head. He was right, I did fail. I started to walk out of the room, and right when I got to the door, I yelled to Leo

How do you like the boat?

before heading out of the briefing room. I sat down in one of the chairs, right outside fo the room, and procsessed my thoughts.

I hadn't meant to kill him. It really wasn't my intention.
How could I have let X take me out so easily?

Using my mic, I let every agent know that if they needed me, I'd be in the training room.
Edit - Is everybody on page with DD? The new episode's been out. Lol.

Man, edit your damn post. This is around the 3rd time you've done something like this. I have to agree with keith here, there is absolutely no way all this shit just "happens" to you. It's like you're always in the right place at the right time. Honestly, just cool off posting for a minute. Maybe read a book. Jesus, I'm going to pop a blood vessel.

I walk in, a light stubble dotting my face. My OIA patch is still worn brightly on my tatterted clothing. I look over at the receptionist, who eyes mequestioningly. She must have been in her late twenties, and she wasn't too bad looking. I flashed her a smile, and immedieatdly she recognized me.

"Nice to see you back." "Yeah, too you as well. Is my room still in the same location?" "Nothing has been changed." "Thanks."

I continued past her, to an elevator in the wall, that looked like a large painting of Napoleon on a horse.I touched the French Conqueror's head, horse's head, and hilt of the sword in sequencial order, and the painting rised, revealing an elevator. I stepped inside, the elevator immedieatdly dropping.

Thirty Minutes Later
I step out of my room, my face cleanly shaven, wearing a crisp new uniform, his OIA patch emblazened on the left breast pocket. I headed over to the Briefing room, where I was told to await the arrival of the General, and my old comrades.

I stepped inside the all too familiar room, where I was chewed out for being an asshole, and failing my job. I took a seat, surprised at I, myself, being the first one there, out of all of my comrades. The General stood at his usual seat.

"Good evening General, Keith, reporting for duty!" Isnapped off a crisp salute.

About Me

01/14/2008 02:48 AM (UTC)
0
The last time I'd stepped into the Briefing Room, my mind was weighing heavy. Everything in my head was a cluttered mess as a result of the mission in Hobart... fanged psychos breaking into our home, seemingly-uninteresting stones opening up portals, blood, blood, blood, and just a little more blood... it was the most action the base has seen in a good number of months.

But myself and all the other operatives had more than enough time to cool down and get our minds straight while the crystal was being studied by our top researchers and engineers. But there'll never be such a thing as TOO much resting time in the O.I.A. and, as expected, things were looking like they were gonna heat up again very fast. But delay is a scared man's scapegoat, and it was about time I shared our findings with the Agency members who made the task in Hobart a success.

"After long last, we have made considerable progress in the diagnosis of the crystal found in Hobart during our last mission."

"Different worlds share similar terrestrial characteristics and structure in certain areas. What I mean by this is that one area of Earth might be similar to an area of, say, Vaeternus. This alien element has the power to locate and link the two similar landscapes, simultaneously weakening the precise region of the barrier between the two. If handled correctly, the result of this would, obviously, be a clear pathway between the two worlds.

Using this theory, it's easy to determine how the being Awrius gained entry into this world. Perhaps through tales of his kind of past excursions into our realm, he determined that Mount Wellington shared very similar aspects to a particular area of his home world. Using this information, he used this crystal to form a pathway that sent him straight into Hobart. The fact that we located him in a cave in the Hobart Zoo remains also indicates that Awrius was reminded of yet a second area of his home world, and consequently, plotted to open a second passageway between his world and ours for his "friends". After all, what better place for a vermin like him to act than a secluded, underground cavernous structure. Clearly, Awrius was far from an idiot, which is a lot more than we can say for his lackeys.

So now that you know all there is to know as of now about this bizarre object, it's time for the bad news. So straighten up in your seats and open your minds.

I have spoken with the current Lieutenant as well as a board of superior operatives, and we have all come to the conclusion that possibilities are extremely high that there are more of these crystals out there. The composition of this crystal is, in actually, very simple when compared to other known elements throughout our neighboring realms... essentially, you would be likely to find more of them if you were to look through surrounding worlds. This, of course, is a bitter discovery, as this intriguing little item poses a huge, huge danger for our civilization. We cannot possibly imagine who else is in possession of a crystal like this one, and we don't even want to think what would happen if it fell into the wrong hands in our own home.

Our next course of action is to resume further study of the crystal in hopes that we will come across a finding that will clue us in as to where we should look for another one and, who knows, maybe even the being who first made one of these. When it is not under study, the crystal will be kept under heavy security in the 8th-Floor Depository. I suggest that none of you make the mistake of trying to get near it, lest you be followed by a bullet or two.

Ah yes, this brings me to another point...

Soul_Stealer, you came across a Black Dragon base operating in Hobart. I mentioned this to the others, and we do fear that knowledge of the crystal may have been what attracted the Dragons there in the first place. Even if this is not true, chance still exists that they gained some amount of information from simply being in the right place at the right time. Basically, let's not discard the possibility that someone out there knows about this crystal and may deduce where it's being kept.

Be on the lookout for anything suspicious, and you all have full authorization to question strange faces around the base. We're going to be tightening up security around here, and this place is going to become a fortress for the next few weeks. May all of you be ready for anything, and may none of you do anything remotely stupid. As always, I welcome all inquiries, comments, concerns, thoughts, or ideas.

You're dismissed, and will be kept posted."
