Friday, July 26th will see NetherRealm Studios return to SDCC for a special Year 2 presentation for the most recent installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise. It will roughly coincide with Takeda early access, and MK's return to the Evo World Championship -- which saw a slight uptick in overall signups.

Update: The panel is officially scheduled to begin at 2:00PM PDT and run for an hour, with Ed Boon joined by voice actors Erika Ishii and Kaiji Tang (MK1 Sub-Zero), with NetherRealm Studios Cinematic Development Director Marty Stoltz and, Principal Cinematic Artist Joshua Slingerland on hand to discuss "continuing story, future fighters, and new game features" coming to MK1.

Chief Creative Officer and general ambassador for the series, Ed Boon, has shared extensive plans for short term fixes with the Takeda update, including gameplay updates boasting buffs for characters like Nitara, Li Mei, Quan Chi, and Scorpion, improvement buffs for Frost, Scorpion, Sektor, Cyrax, and Goro Kameo Fighters, and various other improvements.

Although no official announcements have been made, the Year 2 presentation is also expected to elaborate more on future downloadable content characters, and a previously confirmed Story Mode addition, which will reportedly precede another big surprise.

Street Fighter 6 Director Positive About Mortal Kombat Guest Character
A fan-favourite garners warm response from rival developer.

Will they, or won't they? It's been a question asked by Mortal Kombat fans for many years now, escalating discussions well beyond the old arcade fantasy fights -- and although Street Fighter 6 Director Takayuki Nakayama isn't making any promises -- he has expressed his interest in the possible benefits of incorporating a crossover kombatant into his own game. It presents new hope for fans angling for a showdown, but it isn't the first time an idea like it has been proposed to the developer. Read on for the whole gory tale:

In an interview with VG247, Nakayama expressed positivity towards the phenomenon of wild fan requests inspired by the recent announcement of Street Fighter 6's Year 2 downloadable content. Among the additions will be two characters from the rival Fatal Fury and King of Fighters franchises: Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui. For Nakayama, the request for a Mortal Kombat guest presents a larger philosophical gain:

I don't see it as a negative! In fact, like you just mentioned... What about Sub-Zero? Well, there may well be Street Fighter 6 players who aren't as familiar with the Mortal Kombat IP. So if the goal is to get more people interested in fighting games in general, and a crossover like that gets people talking about which characters should cross over...

I mean, obviously I can't make any promises. But the fact that we're having this conversation just means that more and more people are getting interested. There is a chance for the fighting game community to reach a whole new audience - so we see it as a positive thing, and we encourage that kind of discussion and comments.

This isn't the first time a prospective crossover between Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter has been seriously discussed. In fact, it isn't even the first time a guest character has been floated. Previous Street Fighter director Yoshinori Ono revealed that Capcom rejected a proposal for an inclusion in Mortal Kombat 11. Every aspect of the scenario calls to recollections of the past, which may have informed Nakayama's perspective.

In the nineteen-nineties MK and SF battled for dominion over arcades and consoles in various regions around the world, but much less so in Japan. Never the less, drawing inspirations from popular martial arts movies and tropes of the genre, their international fighting tournament casts drew natural comparison upon the debut of Mortal Kombat - a year after Street Fighter II revolutionized the genre.

In the mid-nineties the battle continued on magazine covers, and went to the big screen, with MK scoring a moral victory in the adaptation from game sprites to live-action. Capcom's Street Fighter series got ahead of the game in slumping years however, pioneering inter-company crossovers with the hugely successful Capcom vs SNK and Capcom vs Marvel series. The latter was just announced to receive a long awaited collection for modern consoles later this year, while the former is the savory basis for the return of Terry and Mai to Street Fighter's hallowed grounds.

After a lackluster also-ran crossover with the DC Universe coincided with the end of parent developer Midway Games; Mortal Kombat found its own gimmick by incorporating God of War's Kratos and horror icon Freddy Krueger into a 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot. The decision to include guest characters changed the game forevermore, tapping in to a growing pop culture trend of profitably mining existing properties for unexpected crossovers. A trend that has reached other prominent series, such as Tekken, and become a pillar of every subsequent NetherRealm Studios game, most recently MK1's superhero-stuffed Kombat Pack.

Street Fighter 6 marks the first time the Japanese series will include inter-company guests into a mainline entry. 2012's Street Fighter x Tekken included unrelated additions, such as main characters from Sony's Infamous and Doko Demo Issyo, while previous installments, like the Street Fighter Alpha series, have created connections with other Capcom franchises, most notably Final Fight.

A return to SNK fighters is a soft entry point for Street Fighter to finally dabble in muddying its waters. Year 1 DLC character Akuma previously met with another SNK character, Geese Howard, and Negan from The Walking Dead, in Tekken 7. Which in turn could finally see channels open between SF and Mortal Kombat as well. An encounter MKvsDC producer Hector Sanchez described as an inevitability in 2010, and drew support from Capcom's VP of Strategic Planning and Business Development, that same year.

With its much quicker and loose embracing of the crossover guest fighter fad, Tekken seemed the more likely franchise to exchange a Mortal Kombat character. Like his contemporary, Tekken Director Katsuhiro Harada expressed interest in Sub-Zero in 2021, also including Raiden in his prospective wishlist.

Mortal Kombat 1 Posts Small Increase in Debut Evo Signups
New game draws modest crowd at annual championship.

Mortal Kombat 1 was part of the preview showcase at last year's Evo World Championship, but the 2024 event later this month will see its official competition debut. Evo has posted official sign-up numbers for all the featured games, and although Mortal Kombat recorded a franchise uptick from last year, its seen a dramatic drop off from the debut of Mortal Kombat 11. Read on for the full story:

It will be a bittersweet return for Mortal Kombat at this year's World Championship when a respectable 645 registered players compete for bragging rights in the latest entry in the series. This was up from a reported 449 players for Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate last year, but still ranks a distant second-last behind powerhouse rival franchises Tekken and Street Fighter.

The latter garnered not only a gargantuan 5,265 players for the sixth & current entry in the series, but also attracted over one thousand competitors for the anniversary nostalgia return of 1999's Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. Only King of Fighters XV failed to draw a smaller registration - two years since its initial release.

Mortal Kombat traditionally lagged behind the other major franchises when it came to serious tournament competition, but enjoyed a massive entry into the organized eSports space with its 2011 reboot, Mortal Kombat. NetherRealm Studios games have been a consistent presence since, despite a close call with omission at the subsequently cancelled 2020 event.

Bolstered by the organized support of the Warner Brothers sponsored Pro Kompetition; Mortal Kombat 11 debuted at Evo 2019 with 1,567 registrants -- more than double the first-time turnout for the latest game!

Mortal Kombat 1 continues to be a divisive entry for the series, challenging the established install base with sweeping changes to basic gameplay sensation and mechanics, while rebooting the fictional universe for a second time with an altered version of early events.

Ed Boon Shares First Official Look at Mortal Kombat 1 Takeda
Teaser introduces Kombat Pack 1's final fighter.

The final fighter in Mortal Kombat 1's first wave of DLC is scheduled to arrive next month, but the first official look at Takeda is already upon us! The whip-wielding warrior clashes with Kuai Liang in a tasty teaser that pits the young fighter against MK1's unlikely Scorpion for a dazzling demonstration of moves. Take a look:

The 18 second teaser was posted to X [formerly Twitter] by NetherRealm Studios Chief Creative Officer Ed Boon to preview the final inclusion in the MK1 Kombat Pack. Takeda is scheduled for early access July 23rd after a recent delay rescheduled kameo fighter Ferra for the same date.

It will have been roughly ten months since the release of Mortal Kombat 1 when Takeda touches down, but Boon's tease comes with a guarantee that there is still much more to come from the game. This is in keeping with an expectation that MK1 will have the longest support cycle of any NetherRealm game, with additional DLC story and a big surprise still to come.

In the spirit of continued support and refinement of Mortal Kombat 1, Boon has also polled fans on prospective updates to the game. The developer solicited five fighters who 'need the most love', garnering popular suggestions such as Sub-Zero and Shang Tsung. He also asked for five kameos to buff, and polled preferences for Kameo updates. With 14,762 votes counted, more Kameo Fighters leads with 39.7%, ahead of more Ambush Moves (35%), and more Special Moves (25.3%).

Chronal anomalies still leave questions about the exact identity of the upcoming character, with Mortal Kombat 1's new timeline replacing the reality that birthed Takahashi Takeda as the son of Kenshi. It seems all bets are off in a game that switched the erstwhile Sub-Zero & Scorpion, and introduced a gender-swapped alternate-reality Johnny Cage.

One thing is clear from the teaser: this Takeda can still crack the whip. What do you think of the upcoming addition to MK1? What would you like to see from future updates? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below and go deeper into discussion in the Mortal Kombat 1 category.
