Battle Arena Semi Finals: Batman v Flash, Superman v Lantern
Battle Arena Reaches the Penultimate Stage!

The court of public opinion is now in session! Injustice Battle Arena is pitting the heroes and villains of the upcoming DC Entertainment fighting game against one another in mortal combat! It's up to fans to decide who will win in the ultimate tournament of Gods Among Us!

New battles unfold every Monday as we count down to the release of Injustice: Gods Among Us! Fans will vote in an elemination style bracket until the grand final decides the ultimate God Among Us, April 8!

Can't decide who would win these epic showdowns? A cavalcade of familiar faces weigh-in for the Semi Final battles! Click the name to load their predictions in the above video space: Tara Strong & Wayne Brady (The Dynamic Duo), Scott Porter & Tim Jo (Team Bandslam), Jason Mewes & Kevin Smith (Jay & Silent Bob), Jason Priestley (of Canadian-American origins), Geoff Johns & Jim Lee (Masters of the Universe) & Jon Huertas & Bas Rutten (UFC Champion & Partner)! Obviously this league of experts has been assembled because they're phenomenally qualified in the superhero arena, but we'd look like a bunch of amateur clowns if we didn't contribute something of substance, so here are some more words and some little pictures:

Semi Final 1: Batman versus The Flash
On the surface it might seem The Dark Knight has met his match, but as the old saying goes: Batman always wins! Both heroes possess a keen mind honed by the crime fighting sciences, but only Flash applied his interests to a vocation, receiving super-human powers in the process! The Scarlet Speedster has sprinted out of close calls against Captain Marvel and Joker, but can he really overcome the ever popular Bat-vote? Having bested Bane and Wonder Woman in previous rounds, Batman proves powers certainly aren't everything. For our money it's any mans match to win, with the result down to motivation and circumstance!

Semi Final 2: Green Lantern versus Superman
Strength and power make Superman's a difficult will to oppose, but if anyone has the authority to step up to The Man of Steel, it's Hal Jordan: Earth's premiere Green Lantern! Supes already beat back another legendary ring slinger in the form of Sinestro and followed with the domination of GL's pal, Green Arrow. Still, wielding the most powerful weapon in the universe; Green Lantern has taken out a powerhouse in Solomon Grundy, and a popular choice in Aquaman. Like the previous Semi, it's a battle that could go any way on any given day, but you've got to suspect a Batman/Superman final could be on the cards!

This week's battles determine the final competitors for the Battle Arena championship! Friday winners will progress to the Tournament Final, where an A-list line-up of Gods Among Us converge to determine the ultimate winner!

Keep up to date with results and weekly superfight previews with our Battle Arena Announcement Hub! Tell us who you think should win and engage in the combat of opinions on the DC Universe Injustice forum! Injustice: Gods Among Us hits home consoles April 16 (17, Australia; 19, Europe).

WizKids to Produce Injustice Dice Building Game
DC Superheroes Take the Battle to Boards & Dice in WizKids Tie-In Game!

Injustice: Gods Among Us is set to go off the board by extending the superhero combat experience to -- you guessed it -- boards! It's the work of game makers WizKids, who will produce their first dice building game based on DC Comics using the gaming property!

ICv2 report the Injustice version will use an all new dice-building system different to that of the Quarriors and Lord of the Rings games. The new superhero system will be devised by dice building innovators Mike Elliott and Eric Lang, of the aforementioned dice building games.

Dice building games combine the concept of deck building from collectible card games, with the simplified interaction of dice games. Quarriors includes upwards of 130 die -- creating a "unique blend of strategy and chance," according to WizKids.

WizKids are no strangers to DC superheroes and stat-based gaming. The group have been responsible for creating Heroclix miniature figures based on the iconic properties since 2006. The Injustice dice building game does not yet have a known release date. Stay tuned to updates on the DC Universe Injustice forum.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Achievement List

Injustice Season Pass Forecasts Four DLC Characters
Injustice Season Pass Gets You 3 New Characters for Price of 4 + Flashpoint Skins!

Additional downloadable content has been on the table since Injustice: Gods Among Us was first announced, way back in mid-2012. With the official endorsement of a Season Pass, DLC gets a little more tangible as we race toward an April release!

Like Mortal Kombat before it [more], it looks as if a DLC Season Pass will buy you four additional characters, with an incentive saving of one hero (or villain).

Additionally; the season pass guarantees three alternate character skins inspired by the Flashpoint comics event. Aquaman, Deathstroke & Wonder Woman offer a bit of variety for the skins -- Emperor Aquaman seen in greater detail in a recent screenshot reveal.

As to the identity of the mystery four characters -- that's ripe for speculation! With an expected playable cast of twenty-odd characters [twenty-two of which have been revealed], and a lot of big talk about content volume and fan satisfaction -- four hardly seems enough!

Popular icons like Martian Manhunter, Doctor Fate, Darkseid & Killer Croc are among those expected to be consigned to cameo appearances come April. Back in 2012; Mortal Kombat Online considered some of the Heroes & Villains we'd love to see, offering a few more possibilities for DLC extras.

Downloadable content has been a major part of the pre-release agenda for Injustice: Gods Among Us. Exclusive pre-order bonus packs promote DLC codes for Superman: Red Son, Blackest Night, Arkham City & The CW's Arrow. Future plans for this DLC and others remains as yet unspecified.

Will you be taking advantage of the Season Pass? Which characters do you hope or expect to see? Check out the new Harley Quinn Trailer to expand your horizons of imagination and tell us more on the DC Universe Injustice forum!

Double Entendre: Gods Among Us Harley Quinn Trailer
Harley Quinn Goes Vigilante in Xbox Trailer & The Joker Returns!

If you've been wondering how The Joker bounces back from that encounter with Superman -- the punchline lies ahead in a new Harley Quinn trailer from Xbox!

Flirtations with crime fighting come to the fore in Injustice: Gods Among Us where a mourning Harley Quinn has turned vigilante on the streets of Gotham City! She's flipped the switch and having a helluva time doing it, at least until the Ex turns up to spoil the broth!

You'd think the Joker's favourite gal would be smitten all over again when he makes a return from the grave, but this isn't Harley's Clown Prince Charming and the romance sure as heck isn't there!

True to the old addage, it seems the simplest explanation is the right one: Joker's dice with death has been solved through the ol' miracle of parallel universe counterparts.

Signs of inter-dimensional influence first emerged in February, with character design artwork labelled "Alternate Earth V" [full story]. Injustice has since racked up a few more parallel versions of characters, using skins to represent the alternate realities of Superman: Red Son, Flashpoint & Arkham City. On the subject -- keep your eyes peeled for an Arkham inspired special cameo by Scarecrow in the trailer!

The question begs: is the story of Injustice: Gods Among Us a simple battle between good and evil, or is this set to spiral out into a Crisis of Multiple Earths? Get more of the backstory from the Death of Metropolis trailer and join the speculation on the DC Universe Injustice forum!

Gods Among Us Headhunted in Mystery Screenshot
Heroes Lose Their Head in Boney New Teaser Screenshot!

Every good superhero saga needs a dose of peril, but when the Justice League are reduced to a row of skulls and masks, you've really got to ask yourself -- 'What the hell has happened to the DC heroes?!'

Injustice Creative Director Ed Boon (@noobde) dropped the puzzling teaser [pictured above] via Twitter. If seeing is believing, then it appears as if Batman, Nightwing, Green Lantern, Raven & Flash will meet nasty ends in some fashion. Either that, or Batman'spenchant for gothic theatricality and trophys has gotten way out of hand!

We know Blackest Night pre-order downloadable content comes with a special Zombie Mode [read more], but the rate of decay pictured seems to have foregone decaying flesh in favour of a more boney motif.

So, is this a vision of things to come, or a whole other ball game entirely? A hoax? A dream? Your guess is as good as ours! Join the speculation on the DC Universe Injustice forum!

Gods Among Japan: NetherRealm Returns to Fighting Mecca
Injustice Takes NetherRealm Studios Back to Japan!

NetherRealm Studios will again be beyond familiar territory when Injustice: Gods Among Us takes the developer back to the fighting game stronghold of Japan!

Despite a traditionally difficult market for Western gaming; Mortal Kombat received at least a trial run in Japan, last year [full story]. The iconic American superheroes will fight their way onto shelves with a Japanese launch date of June 6th.

As reported last month by Siliconera; Injustice will join other multi-platform titles skipping the struggling Microsoft Xbox 360, in favour of focusing on more popular Japanese consoles: PlayStation 3 & Nintendo Wii U.

The game will enter a densely populated field, where a slew of new fighting game titles has been blamed by Capcom for poor sales of Street Fighter X Tekken. Injustice will be up against existing arcade and console powerhouses like; Persona 4, Gundam, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Virtua Fighter 6 & Street Fighter IV.

Those looking to get their hands on Japanese copies of Injustice: Gods Among Us -- complete with a localized unique cover [pictured above] -- can pre-order from Amazon Japan [PS3 & Wii U].

Fans in the United States can look forward to a much earlier street date of April 16. Australia receives a simultaneous release, local date April 17; while Europe will have to wait a couple of days longer, April 19. Planning to buy the Japanese version? Share your stories on the DC Universe Injustice forum!

All but a freshly confirmed Black Adam [full story] have their very own high quality character render [Update 3/22: Black Adam now included.]. The present playable roster of twenty-two characters is otherwise accounted for, with a few more names still expected before we divert full attention to future downloadable content.

Alternate costume packs are set to put a different spin on the various Gods Among Us. Actor Stephen Amell provides the voice for an Arrow inspired version of Green Arrow [read more], while Black Lantern Batman offers an additional character via comic book technicality [full story]. Black Adam Officially Joins Playable Gods Among Us
SHAZAM! Black Adam Confirmed - New Gods Among Us Screenshots!

Through rumor and speculation, he's already been a constant presence looming over Injustice: Gods Among Us. He was one of Mortal Kombat Online's top wishlist characters in 2012, and appeared in frequent story mode sightings published by magazines [full story]. After a long wait, Black Adam has now officially joined the playable roster!

True to speculation, the Black Marvel was previously featured in story mode trailers. Clad in Egyptian inspired alternate attire, he made a significant appearance during the recent Lex Luthor Trailer -- seen pursuing the armored villain through the skies over 'Regime City.'

Black Adam is one of the oldest characters appearing in Injustice, acquired into the DC Comics stable with the purchase of Fawcett Comics and their Captain Marvel properties, in the seventies. Despite a published debut in 1945's Marvel Family #1, the black sheep of the Shazam clan did not become a regular fixture until the DC purchase.

Having endured various revisions to his origin story; "Teth-Adam" is defined as the distant forebear of the power of Shazam -- a corrupt champion chosen in Ancient Egypt. He possesses abilities inspired by the deities of the era: The stamina of Shu; the swiftness of Heru; the strength of Amon; the wisdom of Zehuti; the power of Aton & the courage of Mehen. Like Captain Marvel, he transforms into his mystically powered alter-ego by saying the Wizard's name - Shazam. Unlike Marvel, however, Black Adam typically chooses to remain in his powered form.

Black Adam remained a villainous presence through to the nineties, battling Captain Marvel as his dark counterpart, and even Superman in some stories. It was in the early 2000s that the character reached new popularity as a morally ambiguous figure appearing in the pages of JSA and Hawkman.

During the Black Reign storyline, he returned to his ancient home in the modern day fictional nation of Khandaq. Leading a small band of allies [including Atom Smasher], he launched a brutal coup, conquering the nation to become its new ruler in opposition to the corrupt forces at play. He continued his rule, establishing his own Black Marvel Family until their murder by a new incarnation of the Monster Society. The emotional blow led Black Adam to invade the neighbouring nation of Bialya, where he single-handedly slaughtered almost three million of its citizens.

With some less than subtle parallels between Black Adam's comic book trials and the Gods Among Us transformation of Superman -- it's easy to imagine where the characters allegiances will lie in Injustice! Will it be that straight forward, though? Your guess is as good as ours.

Screenshots: Comic Book Inspired Alternate Skins & More
Black Lantern Batman, Emperor Aquaman & More in Alternate Skin Screenshots!

With no Injustice Battle Arena this week, we've got new screenshots of two of the heavyhitting heroes' alternate skins [via Facebook]. Aquaman & Batman lead the charge, wearing duds inspired by two of DC Comics' biggest events!

Batman comes from Blackest Night -- the bonus DLC pack based on the hit 2009 comic book event. The exact terms of longterm availability remain unclear, but the Blackest Night skin & accompanying Zombie Mode are available with pre-orders are participating stores [full story]. A German trailer for the bonus content has been released [watch].

As a member of the undead Black Lantern Corps; this particular version of Batman was actually an imperfect clone created by the order of Darkseid. Risen from death by a black powerring, Blackest Night Batman made a brief but bold impact on the heroes of the DCU who were moved by his "return." Like all Black Lanterns, The Dead Knight was attracted to intense emotion, seeking the hearts of all who would dare live.

Aquaman owes this relatively traditional appearance to Flashpoint -- a 2011 series that created a twisted parallel version of the DC Universe! This pocket reality adventure resulted in the shock line-wide reboot of DC's properties as part of the New 52!

After the Wonder Woman of the Flashpoint universe killed Aquaman's wife - Mera - the Atlantean monarch leads an all-out war against the Amazons. A more callous version of the deepsea ruler, this Aquaman is responsible for plunging masses of Europe beneath the ocean! It all went down in the three-part mini-series Flashpoint: Emperor Aquaman.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is set to feature various alternate skins in both bonus and in-game content. Designs based on Superman: Red Son and Batman: Arkham City can be found through various pre-order schemes. Injustice specific costumes were on show in this week's Battle Arena spotlights. Screenshots were released through various social networking outlets [below].

Official release is less than a month away! Injustice: Gods Among Us hits PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 & Nintendo Wii U in global rapidfire: April 16 (United States), April 17 (Australia) & April 19 (Europe). Discuss it all on the DC Universe Injustice forum.

Injustice: Blackest Night Downloadable Content Trailer
Ich bin eine Zombie!!! Blackest Night DLC Bonus Gets a Trailer!

IN LESS THAN ONE MONTH THE DEAD WILL RISE -- provided, of course, you've chosen to pre-order Injustice: Gods Among Us at the correct participating outlet. Blackest Night is the subject of one of several pre-order DLC bonuses, first revealed via Amazon.de [full story]. In keeping with the source, IGN offer the German trailer.

Blackest Night was the 2009 comic book saga that gripped the entire DC Universe, bursting from the pages of Green Lantern. The event saw the realization of an ancient prophecy -- a Black Lantern Corps created from the corpses of the dead, intent on claiming the existence of all living things.

Classic GL villain Black Hand was the first to be claimed by the undead Corps, agent to their true leader - a personification of death known as Nekron! It took the combined might of the entire spectrum of Lantern Corps to defeat the villain, with the birth of a White Lantern Corps of life providing the final victory.

The Blackest Night downloadable bonus includes a Blackest Night Batman character skin, as well as a Zombie Mode that leaves the heroes and villains of Injustice looking a little worse for wear. They aren't quite Black Lanterns, but what's a new game without a zombie mode?

DC fanboys will remember the Batman in question was not actually Bruce Wayne, but rather a doomed clone created at the whims of Darkseid. It is as yet unknown if the fine folks at NetherRealm Studios are quite that pedantic in their references.

Europeans can purchase the Blackest Night pre-order version from Amazon for PlayStation 3 & Xbox 360. Americans will find it at Best Buy while stocks last (PS3 & 360); Aussies should check out JB Hifi for their pre-order (PS3 & 360).

Pre-order bonuses based on Superman: Red Son and Arkham City are also available. The game hits home consoles (including Wii U) April 16 [17th AU, 19th EU]. Find more info & discussion on the DC Universe Injustice forum.

Lex Express: Gods Among Us Luthor Story Trailer
Lex Luthor Picks the Winning Side in Epic Gods Among Us Story Trailer!

In a world where the greatest heroes have become our deadliest enemies, will a villain rise to save the day? Lex Luthor stars in an epic trailer for Injustice: Gods Among Us -- but whose side is he really on?

In the past, he campaigned against a Superman whose alien influence dominated the common man. In the world of Injustice, it looks as if Lex Luthor may in fact join the oppresive forces of The Man of Steel's Regime - but will he stay with them?

Indecision was a feature of the Aquaman trailer [full story], which introduced the difficult choice between the total rule of The Regime and dangerous alliance of Batman''s Insurgency. In the tradition of Kingdom Come you would expect Lex Luthor to side with the rebellious human element, but for a man who always picks the winning side, the final option may yet prove to be himself.

The epic story mode trailer -- which raises twice as many questions as it answers -- debuted during the off-week of Injustice Battle Arena. With rousing score, the trailer brings Metropolis' criminal mastermind into conflict with the likes of Hawkgirl, Captain Marvel, Solomon Grundy and a mystery warrior who may or may not be Black Adam!

Developer Diary: Injustice Red Son Special Content
NetherRealm Studios Discuss Communist Superman in Red Son Developer Diary.

Cold War hostilities are alive and well thanks to NetherRealm Studios and the Injustice: Gods Among Us Red Son pre-order bonus!

During last week's Battle Arena break; NetherRealm offered a closer look at the origins of their extra missions and bonus costumes in the first developer diary for 2013.

Created by Mark Millar and Dave Johnson; Superman: Red Son is an Eisner Award winning 2004 mini-series published by DC Comics.

A popular Elseworlds tale [divergent from the main DC Universe]; the series tells of a reality where Superman's Kryptonian rocket ship crash landed in 1950s Soviet Russia. The hammer & sickel replace the S of the iconic shield logo as Superman becomes a champion of the USSR and communism.

Superman & Wonder Woman appear with alternate skins very close to the Dave Johnson designs featured in the comic. Solomon Grundy receives the third costume -- an original creation for the game that supersedes other characters from the comic, such as President Lex Luthor, Batman, or Green Lantern.

The Red Son pre-order incentive is available with PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions of the standard game. Injustice: Gods Among Us officially hits shelves April 16, in the United States, with a simultaneous release in Australia [17th local]. Europe won't be far behind, April 19.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Red Son Pre-Order Options:
  • Gamestop: PS3 & 360 (United States)
  • EB Games: PS3 & 360 (Australia)
  • GAME: PS3 & 360 (United Kingdom)

Other pre-order bonuses from participating outlets feature Blackest Night and Arkham City costume packs [full story]. TV's Stephen Amell reprises his Arrow starring role for a special Green Arrow skin inspired by the hit CW programme [full story].

You can get your hands on the source material by purchasing Superman: Red Son digitally from DC Entertainment or collected in print via Amazon. Watch the Injustice Red Son trailer & discuss it all on the DC Universe Injustice forum.

Rumor Mill: Mortal Kombat PC Hits Amazon UK
Mortal Kombat PC - Coming Soon, or Too Good to be True?

PC gaming may have come a long way in the last decade or so, but old habits have a way of dying hard.

It's fair to say the preference of a majority of fighting game fans remains the best in available arcade and home console hardware. Even so, that hasn't stopped a hardcore audience forming around the desire for a new PC Mortal Kombat experience.

Hopes will have no doubt been raised by the surprise sighting of a PC "Mortal Kombat Game of the Year" edition, listed by Amazon UK.

With a noted release of June 14, 2013, it would appear the prayers of PC gamers have finally been answered. The June date puts it shortly after a belated Australian Komplete Edition (May 28), but with no other details available, we have to advise a certain amount of caution.

Amazon list a PEGI rating of 18+, but the PC version is not present in PEGI's database at the time of this writing. The "GOTY" tag was superseded by Komplete Edition for previous releases, raising additional suspicion.

When asked recently about a PC release of their upcoming fighter (Injustice: Gods Among Us); NetherRealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon was cagey in his dismissal [embedded below]. The unlikelihood of a PC Mortal Kombat has been addressed many times in the past by the series co-creator.

Rival developers broke from expectation, releasing versions of Street Fighter IV to PC, followed by their Namco crossover: Street Fighter X Tekken. Capcom Senior Vice-President Christian Svensson responded to the flagship release in 2009, "... I'm cautiously encouraged by the early support..."

Despite contemporary reluctance, MK has a storied history with PC editions. 1994 saw the first release of ports based on Mortal Kombat & Mortal Kombat II, with sequels following in '96 (MK3), '97 (MK Trilogy) & '98 (MK4). After extensive delays, Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection was released February, 2012, bundling new ported versions of the first three games [substituting MK3 for its later Ultimate version].

During promotion for Deadly Alliance at E3 2002; Midway Marketing staff (David Tokheim & Randy Severin) told Mortal Kombat Online that PC versions had notoriously failed to return cost. Piracy remains a frequently cited contributor to PC sale losses. Mortal Kombat Online will continue to monitor developments in the current story.

Raven Joins Gods Among Us in New Trailer
Raven Battles Catwoman in Character Reveal Trailer

GameTrailers have the first look at Raven -- the newest addition to the cast of Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Raven brings a touch of the dark arts -- familiar territory for the makers of Mortal Kombat! She appears opposite Catwoman, in the trailer, demonstrating various mystic-based telekinetic techniques. Her super-move provides another cameo appearance, this time for her father, the interdimensional demon Trigon!

Raven can now be officially confirmed as playable, having previously appeared in a much talked about screenshot published by Official Xbox Magazine [full story]. The story mode image places Raven alongside Nightwing & Catwoman, possibly in opposition to villains Lex Luthor & Bane, whose true roles in the game remain subject to speculation.

She's the third character with Titans membership. Nightwing & Cyborg represent the junior team, while classic arch-villain Deathstroke provides traditional menace in modern form. It's a slightly surprising choice given available alternatives, even if we already knew to expect Doctor Fate relegated to background cameo.

The Teen Titans have enjoyed considerable success away from comics, starring in two animated series: Teen Titans and Young Justice. The former returns in 2013 as Teen Titans Go.

Raven follows the reveal of Doomsday, bringing the confirmed playable roster up to twenty-one. Discuss all things Gods Among Us on the DC Universe Injustice forum.

Arrow Star Provides Voice for Alternate Character Skin
Stephen Amell Provides Voice for TV Inspired Green Arrow Alternate Costume.

The game makers at NetherRealm Studios have made some bold claims about the volume of content they intend to dish up for their newest console fighter. With the DC Entertainment stable at their backs, it looks like they might just deliver -- adding the star of CW's Arrow to a growing list of comic book features.

TV Guide report Stephen Amell will reprise his role as TV's Green Arrow, providing the voice for a special in-game alternate skin based on the live-action programme.

Amell joins an already impressive stable of celebrity voice actors, many of whom return to roles made famous in other DC Entertainment projects. Kevin Conroy leads the animated series alumni, having been the voice of Batman for over twenty years as star of critically acclaimed television, animated films and video games.

The Arrow skin is one of two alternate costumes afforded the emerald archer [full story]. The costume has already been offered as a downloadable prize to fans voting in the Injustice Battle Arena promotion. Amell appeared as a guest expert during Week 2 & Week 4 of the fan tournament. Further details regarding in-game access are as yet unknown.

NetherRealm's 2011 reboot of Mortal Kombat offered four additional characters as download, none of which had unique voice acting.

Injustice: Gods Among Us hits home consoles April 16. Participating pre-order deals offer bonus skins based on Superman: Red Son, Blackest Night & Arkham City. Discuss these versions and more on the DC Universe Injustice forum.

Review: Injustice: Gods Among Us #2
Injustice: Gods Among Us enters Anthology territory in digital/print split.

When it comes to the Injusice: Gods Among Us tie-in series from DC Comics, there are a few inescapable truths.

For one; this is a tie-in product for a video game, which invariably means there's some consideration given to the new audience it will hopefully attract. By extension, it's impossible to ignore the word-of-mouth success the series has already claimed in just a few short months. Gamers are flocking to digital chapters to learn more about the playable characters; while comics readers are intrigued by a corporate comic dwelling on the fall of its greatest hero.

Injustice: God Among Us #2 [released February 27] is written by Tom Taylor, with shared art chores by Mike S. Miller & Bruno Redondo. Mortal Kombat Online is reviewing the digital version of this issue, which encompasses weekly Chapters 4 through 6 [read more]. Much moreso than #1, this is an episodic collection, each chapter much more readily isolated as a stand-alone read.

The issue picks up immediately where the last issue ended -- following the fall-out of a bombshell twist that saw Superman - acting under the influence of Scarecrow's fear toxin - inadvertently kill Lois Lane and trigger a nuclear bomb in Metropolis. Anyone who has been following promotion for the game knows that this is the pivotal moment that sets up the Gods Among Us beat 'em up universe.

The murder plot is the work of The Joker: not traditionally a Superman opponent, but certainly no more partial to The Man of Steel than he is The Dark Knight Detective.

You get a sense that there is - or should be - more to this story than we know. Joker's reasons for being in Metropolis -- a trip that includes the casual, quickly forgotten murder of Superman's pal, Jimmy Olsen [see; Issue #1] -- aren't explained. To think a comic focused on backstory would gloss over this catalytic detail seems like a discredit to the creators involved. Joker may have a reputation for being a wildcard, but his actions are rarely so incongruous or shallow, particularly in a story that derives from them. There are enough masterminds in play to suspect manipulations by someone more motivated, like Lex Luthor, but doubt lingers. Depth, detail, and causality certainly weren't strengths of the first issue.

Even with the benefit of a grander conspiracy, there are those inescapable truths about the series. It's difficult to ignore the sense of reverse-engineering that is the plot of a tie-in. The high concept of the lead product is a world where Superman has turned tyrant, leading to superhero civil war. Without the fundamental alterations of a story like Red Son, it takes the death of Lois Lane (and Metropolis) to turn Superman heel and no more than that. It's the ends that are most important here, not the means. It feels that way throughout.

If obligations to a conclusion have robbed the story of any of its own complexity, then it becomes troublesome that there is an obvious eye for a new reader, as well.

Rather than sell the virtues of enduring characters and their developed history, the popular wisdom of the day is to pitch lobbed soft balls. Deft writers can weave layers that satisfy new and old readers with the right sense of familiarity beneath a scene, but that isn't the case in Injustice #1 or #2.

At times, the script rings untrue, offering shadow versions of scenes you'll recognize from other stories, without any real sense of referencial wisdom. They depict characters as slightly unfamiliar with each other, presumably to the expectation of an unfamiliar reader. This is evident in a bizarrely restrained interrogation scene between Batman and arch-nemesis Joker. Set immediately after the total annihilation of one of DCU America's biggest and brightest cities - Metropolis - it's all a bit shallow.

Joker, like the first issue, meanders through frustratingly uncomplicated observations of what is about to occur. Batman is surly, but accomodating and ineffective. They'd be cartoon versions of themselves, if the cartoons hadn't already set that bar higher.

The counter-culture appeal of both characters makes them easy targets for a gaming audience, but these heavyhitters usually demand more on their home turf. With a structure built around bombastic reveals, it all becomes killing time, rather than Killing Joke. It must be said that this is undeniably valid and successful for attracting unfamiliar eyes, but even they will notice everything feels a little inconsequential as things develop and the game arrives.

Bad Cop: Superman gives Joker a hand during interrogation.

Where issue #1 had a flowing sense of belonging in a printed complete issue - the value of digital chapters becomes evident through issue #2. Things take a harsh detour as soon as the big reveal is delivered at the end of Chapter 4 (the first third of the print issue) -- a super-hand through the Joker's chest [pictured above] gives way to a tangent starring Harley Quinn.

The brief episode has the risk of tripping on the same oh-so ironic cutesy dialogue of earlier chapters, but in isolation, plays its hand much funnier, and as a better orchestrated skit. Taken completely on its own, it's an enjoyable introduction to both Harley Quinn and Green Arrow. It doesn't go much deeper than the elephant in the room: the slight absurdity of Green Arrow's origins as an arrow-themed Bat-knockoff -- but it tackles the subject well.

In keeping with the Bat v Arrow theme, the chapter is very The Killing Joke! It must be said it's much less brutal and intricate than the famed Alan Moore story, but works toward the same objective of a laugh from the stoic hero.

Bruno Redondo gives the chapter the look of the kinds of comics you might've been reading throughout the last decade, much moreso than Rhaapack or Miller. Redondo's layouts are key to the success of the chapter, showing skils as a comics workman, versus the style of the other Injustice artists. The contrast works in its favour, earning the time of the episode, with a tighter urban space. When Miller returns, the slick hyper reality hits strong.

Punchline: Harley Quinn Gets the Last Laugh out of Green Arrow.

The third segment [Chapter 6] brings us back to the important bits and is perhaps the strongest to date. It's fast and familiar, rooted in popular cliches, but it gets the job done. We're confirming the change; the definitive turning point that takes Superman from hero to tyrant, truth and justice still in tact. Its slow to start, but it's got the meat of a good action sequence.

Superman as villain has become a stock standard of the independents, who've always had the freedom to commit to the idea more than the corporates. The fact that this has the illusion of an on-going story where it's really Superman is attractive. As a DCU like the most recognized version - even moreso than the current New 52 version - it has impact! It's surprising we're heading there so soon, but it feels like things are hitting their stride. We're in territory characters like Black Adam and Iron Man have dwelled in, but it's neutral territory and has us on our way.

The ghost of Kingdom Come shrieks for attention during Superman's address to the world. Flanked by Wonder Woman; Superman has a less poignant message to spur in the final scene, but fair enough. It is what it is and as much as it would be nice to feel a sense of knowing in every panel, that's not what new readers want.

The noise made about this series' distinction as removed from the usual tropes and habits of tie-ins and gaming fodder works against it. It isn't earning those accolades just yet. It is, however, connecting with an audience and bringing a strong readership in. Dominating sales charts on stores like Amazon Kindle, this is one of the most successful digital outings for comics. It's working and that's worth something.

It will be interesting to see where Injustice: Gods Among Us goes from here. The first issue dwelled in a thin First Act, this issue brings us through the Second. How they're going to sustain a series that doesn't completely overlap with the game - I have no idea! I'm intrigued to see what they do! I'm wondering if the pace slows from here, or if we really will get more detail about the backstory to the backstory.

You can find the full print issue at all good comic stores! If you'd rather go digital, pick up the individual chapters for 99c each via; DC Entertainment, Comixology or Amazon Kindle Store! Injustice: Gods Among Us Presents Doomsday
The Monster That Killed Superman Tangles With Earth's Mightiest Mortal

In 1992 DC introduced the world to a creature that would change comics forever.  This creature, Doomsday, has earned his place in comics lore for doing the impossible.  In a brutal, drag out brawl staged in the streets of Metropolis, this monstrosity from prehistoric Krypton led the world to bear witness to the unthinkable - the Death of Superman!  And now in Injustice: Gods Among Us he returns to wage battle against Earth's Mightiest Mortal, Captain Marvel!

Born on a prehistoric Krypton, Doomsday was bred to be the ultimate living being, killed and reborn stronger over and over again by his creator, Bertron.  A science project gone horribly wrong, Doomsday eventually rebelled against his creator and continued to grow ever stronger on his own, never able to be killed the same way twice due to his amazing adaptability.

Eventually finding himself on Earth, Doomsday went on a violent rampage and barreled through the Justice League, eventually meeting Superman in a one on one battle that left both dead.  Ever since that historic event, Doomsday has had a place as one of the Man of Steel's most dangerous foes and this trailer demonstrates why, giving us a look at both Doomsday and Captain Marvel's skills with teleports and grapples galore.  Doomsday is a dangerous presence in the best of times so only time will tell what kind of damage he can do while the heroes we know and love are busy fighting each other.

Battle Arena QF: Aquaman v G. Lantern, Superman v G. Arrow
Fans decide as Aquaman faces Green Lantern & Superman defends against Green Arrow!

Surrender to the celebrities among us who have offered their opinions: Kevin Smith & Jason Mewes (Purveyors of Comics), Stan "The Man" Lee & Jace Hall (Creator of Comics & Producer of Things Based on Comics) & Brian Bloom, Steven Blum & Fred Tatasciore (Voices of Things Based on Comics)! Not quite convinced? Maybe if you read more comics you'd know left from right. Hey! No sweat, jack. MKO knows the skinny, you dig?

Quarter Final 3: Aquaman versus Green Lantern
One commands the vast oceans, the other patrols the entire galactic sector. Aquaman may have left behind the sneering skepticism associated with his well known 'fish telepathy,' but up against one of the most powerful weapons in the universe is even a new veneer of cool -- ironic, or not -- enough? Green Lantern packs a potent punch with the ability to manifest whatever he can will into being. The power ring requires routine recharge, but when you're conjuring a convoy of glowing green bombers to crush your enemy, battery life has a way of being a non-issue. If GL's cinematic outing taught us nothing else, it's that you can never count-out human error - but the whale of infamy will have to get up pretty early to earn his master this win.

Quarter Final 4: Superman versus Green Arrow
One can't help but wonder if the witness hasn't already been led to an obvious conclusion. Nevermind the fact Green Arrow is woefully under powered when tustling with Superman -- the cover of the very game this is based around pretty much presents this as a foregone conclusion. This is comic books, which means there's always a way for anyone to win. Renowned for his spirit and activism, Green Arrow has thrown in the face of The Man of Steel (as tyrant) before, but you've got to think it's a big ask to take out the series antagonist so early. Even if he has supplanted Superman for mastery over shy, watered down TV versions of super heroes.

This week's battles determine the final four competitors for the Battle Arena tournament! Friday winners will progress to the Semi Finals, where an A-list line-up of Gods Among Us converge on the eve of victory! Not quite convinced? Hey, you can always count on MKO to tell you what to think!

Quarter Final 1: Batman versus Wonder Woman
It's the ingenuity of The Dark Knight against the raw power of the Amazon Princess! Round 1 showcased the Batman's penchant for tustling with more powerful opponents; while Wonder Woman had no trouble besting one of the Gotham riff-raff in a bit of a mismatch. Bane couldn't break the bat - can Wonder Woman?
With strength to rival Superman and none of the weaknesses typically exploited in frequent sparring sessions between the World's Finest, Wonder Woman compelling argument! Theatricality and deception are powerful agents for Batman, but bound by the lasso of truth, could even he be forced to face the truth that he is merely a man among gods? The popular vote all but guarantees a Bat-victory, but there's a case to be made.

Quarter Final 2: Flash versus Joker
The villains of Arkham Asylum may get all the press, but in Central City, The Rogues give The Flash more than a run for his super-fast money. Joker may have a quick wit, but against the fastest man alive sight gags will be too slow! In Round 1, Joker proved there are no odds he can't make a mockery of; Flash endured one of the closest match-ups against Captain Marvel, escaping defeat by narrow margin. It's tough to go past Flash in what looks like a gross mismatch, but everybody loves a clown...

Flight, super strength, and a big honkin' mace could not save Hawkgirl from the trick shooting finesse of Green Arrow.  The Hall of Justice served as battle ground for not just one battle but two.  As Oliver Queen dominated his fight, Atom Smasher and Giganta towered above, locked in their own brawl.  And, thanks to a conveniently placed boom tube, the despot Darkseid got a chance to weigh in, apparently siding with the voters in support of Green Arrow as he gave Hawkgirl a beating as penalty for the the unexpected intrusion.
