Ed Boon Discusses Guest Fighters Past, Present, Future

As speculation over Mortal Kombat X's content future defiantly simmers post-MKXL; GameInformer have tapped into the always engaging, often contentious subject of guest characters - past, present and future.

Ed Boon revealed the best selling downloadable characters of the most recent game were Alien and Predator. It follows a trend started by Freddy Kreuger and Scorpion, who topped DLC sales in Mortal Kombat (2011) and Injustice: Gods Among Us respectively.

Mortal Kombat X featured the most downloadable characters of any NetherRealm Studios fighting game to date: eight in total. Four of those were guest fighters, meaning the combative Alien vs Predator mega-franchise trumped classic horror icons Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) and Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) in latest sales. That fact hasn't stopped Ed Boon being open to the idea of a dedicated horror fighting game [full story].

Evo 2014: Mortal Kombat X Guest Character Confirmed (Again)

The Dark Knight in MK vs DCA Polygon Evo interview with NetherRealm Studios' Ed Boon is again drawing attention toward the likelihood of guest character(s) in 2015's Mortal Kombat X.

The profitable return of crossover fighters hasn't been much of a secret. As well as various references on Twitter -- Boon made guest character considerations known to various outlets during last month's E3 launch [Related Article: E3 2014: Gamespot Full Match Videos & Demo Stream].

Answering questions about a possible return crossover between NetherRealm's two established fighting franchises - Boon leaned toward the negative, "I'd be hard-pressed to have a DC character as a downloadable character in Mortal Kombat X."

This, of course, goes against the grain of Scorpion making the leap to Injustice: Gods Among Us, but there's an explanation for that rooted in the differences between the two franchises. "The main reason is, I have no desire to cut Batman's head off. I have no desire to kill Superman."

Speculation: Could a 2015 Movie Tie-In Provide MKX's Guest Fighter?

Nightmare on DLCThere are a select few certainties in this life. Rating highest among them are death, taxes and fighting game guest characters.

The success of Freddy Krueger [pictured top] and Scorpion have all but ensured NetherRealm Studios will always entertain the idea of a guest fighter in their games. Why wouldn't they? According to Creative Director Ed Boon -- both characters went on to be the highest selling downloadable content (DLC) for their respective games [Mortal Kombat & Injustice: Gods Among Us].

During his Gamespot Stage Demo appearance at this year's E3 -- Boon also made it known there would indeed be considerations for a new guest character in Mortal Kombat X. He ruled out a return for 2011 Sony exclusive Kratos (God of War) via Twitter. So. Who will it be?...
