The MIA characters
The MIA characters
With the "official" list supposedly (and likely) leaked, the first thing any good MK fan will notice are some rather glaring omissions. While we can debate endlessly over whether Kano deserves to be in this game over Reptile or Mileena (*cough* hell no *cough*), I figured it wouldn't hurt to talk about the characters you believe SHOULD have been in this game and WHY you think so.
For me, for example...
MK:
Mileena - She's Kitana's evil twin and, with the exception of MK:A, hasn't been in a game with Kitana in a long while. Which is sad, because she's part of the female ninjas that Boon dubbed the "female Scorpion and Sub-Zero". But while Scorpion and Sub-Zero have been able to trade blows in nearly every single game, these two intense rivals have been left out, and it looks like that'll be the case yet again.
Reptile - Sure, you could argue that the absence of ninjas was a conscious decision.... but you'd also be lying to yourself if you didn't think the ninjas were way more popular than any of the "normal" cast, and Reptile was hardly an exception. From his incredible secret appearance in MK1 to arguably the best fight in the MK movie against Liu Kang, Reptile's much more than a "palette" swap ninja, and far more deserving over a slot over even the likes of Jax or arguably Shang Tsung.
DC:
Lobo - He was tailor made for this game. A badass fighter with a love for blood and violence..... so why isn't he here and "Shazam" is? Seriously, his "hook-chain" is almost a direct parallel to Scorpion's spear, and he fits in with the gritty visual style of MK far more than even Batman and definitely Superman ever will.
Martian Manhunter - Yeah, lots of love to the green guy.... who has been absolutely forgotten about. This founding member of the JLA is the only founding member of the JLA unaccounted for and the game just feels incomplete without his brooding presence.
What are some of your choices and why?

Mileena is more original and more fun then kitana imho, so I would have rathered her, plus shed make an excellent rival for catwoman
I would have also liked tanya or sheeva as evil women, but I knew that was never going to happen
in regards DC, i think aqua man would actually be pretty cool,
and poisen Ivy ould also fit well

Same for me and Reptile, hell I'm only getting this game now for a DC fighting game. MK is my punching bag. Those fucking writers over at MK team. Bastards wouldn't know iconic if it bit them in the ass. KANO?! Only in because of Sonya. Jax, only in because of the race card. Baraka is to MK as was the cinnamon roll I ahd a few minutes ago, unneded and will end up hurting more than helping. C marvel could make a story cameo as could Lex, as neither of them belong. And finally Catwoman, she doesn't actually FIGHT all that much, she could make a story cameo too! Bull. sorry if I ranted to long, but I felt it was necessary
Have to hope for downloadable content I suppose. Baraka and Jax were bad choices in my mind. As for the DC roster, it is what it is. No one complained that much about the Joker but have huge problems with Luthor, even though in my mind Luthor has proven himself a more capable fighter and villain in the comics. Joker's recent popularity is solely thanks to Ledger, at least that's my opinion on the matter.
My top list would be:
MK:
1) Quan Chi - I really wanted to see them break the proverbial Mortal Kombat 2 mold. In my mind he's the most popular, iconic, important, whatever term of the day you want to use, character. I realize this isn't a canon entry in the MK series, but nevertheless, Quan Chi has played a larger role in recent MK than the large majority of the characters that did make the roster. Obviously the recent MKs did not sell as well as the older ones did, but they still sold. Why completely forget your current fanbase that has kept you afloat and attempt to revisit people who haven't played MK in forever in hopes that they will have some sort of restored interest in the series? It's just not going to happen; stick with what was working before and stop trying to recapture the past. I'm all for putting in the most well known characters, but seriously, who buys that Baraka and Jax (who doesn't even LOOK like Jax did) would be more well known that Reptile and Kung Lao by the casual, non-recent MK fan? No one, that's who.
2) Kung Lao - See above, minus the obvious part.
DC:
1) Nightwing - I know no one wants an overflow of Batman characters, but they just fit the best and they are typically the ones I like.
2) Solomon Grundy - This guy would have been a great fit with the MK characters.

Bane - One look at him and you know he was made for this game. Though there are alot of batman characters, I would be willing to trade out Catwoman or Joker for him if I had to, and I'd trade Lex for Him in a split second. He just seems to fit the Fighting Genre.
On MK side I like the roster, It looks great. Though I'd rather swap sonya out for Reptile, Noob, Ermac, Smoke, Mileena, Kung Lao, or even Quan Chi. But that's just my opinion

MK:
Mileena- I don't like to say "If Kitana is in, then Mileena shuold be in" or vice versa...I don't think they need each other, although they do complement one another...but I do think Mileena is MK's iconic "femme fatale" and I believe that's something worth keeping. Also, if Mileena were in, we could've avoided this Kitana getting the Ground Roll nonsense.
Reptile- One could make the ninja overkill agrument with Reptile...and Mileena as well...but I think they've evolved enough design-wise to escape that stereotype. Also, as far as lower-level henchmen villains go, I think he's a far superior choice than Kano.
Quan Chi- I agree with Crow that it would've been nice to get someone outside the MK1/MK2 box. Icon or no, Quan Chi is one of the main villains of MK and has become one of the most important characters. He sure as shit could've been involved. And you know what, if Quan Chi's not an icon, this could've been the game to MAKE him one. People like to say the characters from MK1 and MK2 are the only icons...well, as long as the MK team keeps parading them around as such, that will never change.
DC:
Black Canary- Recently, DC has tried pushing Black Canary as the Number 2 heroine after Wonder Woman...so I think she could've been a nice addition. She's also portrayed as one of DC's best martial artists and I think she would've made a good counterpart to Sonya.
Circe- Longshot and not a very well-known character outside the comics, but I think it would've been nice, since Batman got his arch-nemesis and Superman got his, if Wonder Woman got hers. Also, an evil sorceress wouldn't exactly be out of place in Mortal Kombat.
Mileena- I don't like to say "If Kitana is in, then Mileena shuold be in" or vice versa...I don't think they need each other, although they do complement one another...but I do think Mileena is MK's iconic "femme fatale" and I believe that's something worth keeping. MORTAL KOMBAT
Mileena - I think Garlador pretty much explained my reasons for Mileena needing to be in this one. It just makes sense. I don't really need to go into any further detail. Shame on the Mk team for not choosing her.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
DC UNIVERSE
Poison Ivy - I feel it was an extremely bad decision to leave her out of the roster. Of course her presence has been debated on this forum back and forth, and much has been provided to prove that she would fit quite well into this game, despite others arguing that she lacks combat skills. Which only proves my point further that if we were using that logic, The Joker should not and would not be in MK vs DC either, for is fighting ability is less than stellar.
Ivy has nature at her command, the special moves they would have been able to pull off would have been endless, and visually stunning to watch. A character like Ivy would have pushed the MK team creatively to come up with something more than just the average hand to hand. Vines sweeping enemies off their feet, snapping through the air in whip like motions, snaking around the ankles of her opponent to make he or she immobile. Ivy could blow a kiss, emitting potent pheromones (aka love dust as seen in B&R) that has staggering effects. I could go on and on about what could be.
Arguably Poison Ivy is more popular than lets say Deathstroke. And she most certainly is on of the most recognizable female villains in Batman's universe, right up there with Catwoman & Harley Quinn. So why she was left out really baffles my mind.

Here are some of my personal preferences for characters that look to have been excluded.
MK
Quan Chi - definitely. Quan Chi is perhaps second only to Shao Kahn as the greatest MK villain of all time, having bested the Elder God Shinnok and beaten Shang Tsung to a pulp, as well as being Scorpion's current arch-nemesis. Quan Chi's got a ton of visual flair, and storywise has been involved in events since before MK1, meaning he could easily have been in this MK2-themed roster. Quan Chi is easily the villain with the biggest charisma and potential, so having an list of "icons" (which include Kano) and neglecting him is sorely disappointing.
Kenshi - To be fair, MK's cast has been rather unpopular since so many new faces sprang up in MK3. Kenshi, IMO, was a stand out of good design, conception, and execution during the "modern" era of MK. Though his story faltered, his original moves, stances, storyline, and character design were enough to make me a serious fan of him, even if I was crap with him in actual gameplay.
Sareena - Those who know me know I adore Sareena like no tomorrow. While I admit her somewhat generic goth look is a tad vanilla, her story and personal character development is immensely above 95% of the entire MK cast. She's a hero, a villain, a victim, an oppressor, a beauty, a beast, a monster, a lover, a slave, and a wildcard, and quite frankly I'm still terribly upset that she's only been playable in ONE console game thus far when her rich history and dynamic relationships with Sub-Zero, Noob Saibot, and Quan Chi deserve much more fleshing out.
Noob Saibot - On that note, it's debatable that the biggest news ever to rock the MK community in the past console generation was that the mysterious ninja of the League of Shadow was in fact the original Sub-Zero and the current Sub-Zero's brother in a twist worthy of "Luke, I am your father". Sadly, this has rarely been touched upon or developed, with only the occassional, and forced, off-hand comments by Sub-Zero letting us know that his brother is, yes, still evil and, yes, still out to kill him. The concept of the "good" brother versus the "evil" brother is a motif that's been huge in stories, mythology, and popular media for a long time, and for a reason. I want to see more of Noob and how Sub-Zero will ultimately deal with his corrupted and powerful older sibling.
DC
Bane - Definitely agree here. This is a friggin' FIGHTING game and I'm sorely disappointed at the lack of actual FIGHTERS on the DC side, when there are so many they could have, and should have, chosen. Bane is one of them, a highly skilled martial artist, with the same visual flourish that would lend itself well to the MK world. But, no, instead he's passed over in favor of more colorful, and far less suited, characters.
Azrael - He was an insane longshot, and obviously wasn't even a consideration. Azrael is the man who beat Bane and did what the Dark Knight couldn't. He also went crazy a few times. But regardless, he's got the same extended blade techniques that Baraka has... only they're on fire. His costume is arguably one of the most visually stunning creations in the history of comics, with his blood-red angel-of-death motif, and his pension for violence and brutality, while still remaining on the side of good, would have made him an excellent addition to the cast.
Dr. Fate - "Shazam" (dammit, Captain Marvel) seemed to get the nod as the de facto magic user from the DC side, but Dr. Fate, or even Zatanna (as was the case with the last Justice League game), are probably far more suited to that role, with more unique, interesting powers and better visual motifs. I guess neither of them were as "iconic" as the Big Red Cheese.... as ill-suited to this game as he is.
Green Arrow - Sure, you could argue that a man with a bow and arrow wouldn't be right for this game.... except Green Arrow kicks a serious amount of ass. He's an incredibly capable fighter with or without his trick arrows, and even then if Nightwolf can have arrows, why couldn't they include Green Arrow? Green Arrow's a fighter, much more so than Flash or Green Lantern ever were, and has shown himself able to go toe-to-toe with even the likes of Batman. His omission is sorely missed.
MK
Quan Chi - definitely. Retrospectively it should have been MK Vs Gotham City... Batman's rogue's gallery is awesome.
I do think the MK roster is probably spot on really. They only need to add to both rosters really:
On the plus side though, didn't they say there would be a lot of cameos and "clone characters" you would fight.
MK:
Goro: Not only one of the most recognisable MK characters of all time, the big man is one on the most recognisable characters of all time. Full Stop. You aren't gonna miss him. So why did you miss him Ed?
Mileena: Kitana's evil twin and all round naughty girl.
Kung Lao: The Hatman cometh... Always preferred him over Liu Kang.
Quan Chi: Perhaps the only post MK3 character to achieve the status of "legendary" MK character.
Johnny Cage: The man is a dick. But I want to see him get smacked upside the head by Wonder Woman... Plus the Hero side is lacking in the arrogance department.
DC:
Martian Manhunter: He probably isn't in it for the same reason Shang Tsung doesn't have morphs really. But then again: GL has all those ring powers.
Cheetah: I thought that Cheetah was the main Wonder Woman enemy, really. But then again someone will say that the Nazis were Wonder Woman's true enemy. Very vague outside of the comic world who is the main villian for some of these guys...
Power Girl: I thought she was given the tip of the hat by Ed to a journalist. Curse that guy for lying. That isn't cricket Edward. She'll be a cool addition.
Bizarro: ME AM NOT LIKE BIZARRO. BIZARRO'S ADDITION AM MAKE NO SENSE TO ME.
Lobo: He was cool in the cartoon.

My reasons are very simple, but I believe this is a simple game.
KUNG LAO:
Kung Lao looks cool as hell and he throws a sweet hat. Baraka's alright, but I'd rather have replaced him with Kung Lao. Kung Lao is definitely iconic enough.
JOHNNY CAGE:
Johnny Cage has a lot of hate thrown at him over the years, and he's been criticized for being a joke character. But I believe, that like Scorpion, his character never gets old. He's basically MK's equivalent of Captain Falcon. If Johnny Cage had a theme tune, you know it would have awesome guitar riffs.
The guy nutsacks people. Who doesn't want to punish the DC cast (and Sonya) with that move? He wears shades and he's from Hollywood, that's all he'll ever need. Nobody's as cocky in MK.
You can't exactly say he isn't iconic either, even if his cheesy nature has resulted in unpopularity.
DC side.
LOBO:
Lobo is made for MK! He's violent, vulgar, cheesy, badass, and lowbrow. To not include him is a cop out.
BANE: Bane is another very dark character who snapped Batman's spine. Same reason as Lobo really.

Well, lets see here:
MK:
1. Noob Saibot // Reptile - Either one really. I'd be cool with finding out that one or both of them are secret characters. Actually, Ermac fits here too. I think they deserve to be in a game like this, since this is a mortal kombat game. I figure, if they wanna expose the DC fanboys to something cool, those characters are the mules.
They're comic-book-y characters too. Y'know, "deceptively human" all these wild special powers..ect. Shoe-ins iMo.
2. Kung Lao - Really surprised he's not in there. What with his historic value to the MK Universe and all. To me, he's a big part of why Fatalities are so "needed" too. That hat slice fatality back in MK2 overshadowed so many others back then. Anyway, he's cooler than Kang too. We got Raiden in there, but I think alot of the "Mortal Kombat swagger" is his and Raidens responsibility to carry in a MK game.
3. Jade // Mileena - Pretty much the same as Noob Saibot, Reptile, and Ermac.
4. Kintaro // Motaro // Goro - I'm surprised that none of these guys made it in. I'm cool with Shao Kahn and Baraka, but even still, it feels like we need more high powered monsters in the game without them in there.
I mean, isn't that one of the things MK is known for? The larger than life boss characters, and really visceral monster characters?
5. Onaga // Shinnok - a chance to really make these guys as powerful as they could have ever been. Missed.
6. Johnny Cage - Just kinda strange he didn't make it in an "all star" game like this. Counter him with maybe Booster Gold from DC....idk.
DC
1. Martian Manhunter // Red Tornado - WtF? Like, really? These are a couple of the coolest characters in the Justice League.
2. Lobo // Bane - WtF? SHOE-IN....right?
3. Solomon Grundy // Bizzaro - hu? Couple more shoe - ins
4. Dr Fate - c'mon man.
5. Cheetah - I understand with this one though, they've been saying for some-time now that doing morphs is out of the question at this time. I still like her though.
6. Huntress - I like her better than Catwoman. Don't know why either.
7. Captain Atom // Mr Terrific - ?? Aren't these characters shoe-ins?
8. Fire (the green fire chick) // StarFire // FireStorm (the guy) - Fire looks pretty good in this game, I'd think they'd want to finally put one of these fire engulfed characters in there.....I mean, at least as a None Playable Character.
And on and on....
See, I'm not at all disappointed that some of these characters are missing. I'm more surprised that some of them are not there.
Ultimately though, I agree with the person who said they probably should just add to the roster that's there.
Um....I didn't have many expectations after this game was announced so, I'm pretty much content with Raiden and Green Lantern.

About Me
When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yes sir, the check is in the mail."

Again, Jack Burton finds himself in agreement with ThePredator151.
I'm not as upset as I am surprised by the characters that made it in versus the ones who didn't. My only grief, and this seems to be shared by the multitiude, is the fact that the likes of Kano and Jax made it in over guys like Kung Lao and Reptile, for example. Hell, I'm even hearing from guys like me, who played MK from the first day the first game came out, that Kano shouldn't be in this game. I really think the MK team should listen to that.
Raiden is my all-time favorite character in the MK universe, hands-down. I instantly became a "Raiden worshipper' when I first popped the original MK into my SNES (I know, that version had no blood and stuff, but that's all I had at the time, don't bust me in the balls over that) at four years old. When MK2 came around, I found another character to love, and that was Kung Lao. I don't know quite what did it for me, if it was his overall play style or just his kick-ass hat, but I came to idolize him in almost the same respect as Raiden. I guess the whole hat thing is really what made me like them, I really can't tell you anymore at this point. I'm just a big fan of who they are, what they do, and what they're about.
Kung Lao is every bit as iconic to me as Raiden is, and I agree with the point made by ThePredator151 about Raiden and Lao "carrying the MK swagger" so-to-speak. I think Lao and Raiden are the best ones of doing that. I also agree with the point he made about Lao being cooler than Liu Kang; up until MKD, I loved Kung Lao more. It wasn't until the zombified Liu Kang came out that my interest in him really ignited. I say that Lao and Kang are about equal in awesomeness to me, but I'd be slightly more likely still to choose Lao over Kang...again, possibly because of the hat.
To see that Kung Lao hasn't made the roster is a bit hurtful to me, but that doesn't stop me from praying for downloadable content and characters! I hope he does make it in somehow, and for the rest of you out there hoping your favorites make it in as well, I wish you the best of luck.
Before closing, I will address the whole idea of Lobo and Bane in the game: why the hell not? Lobo is a great character to have in this game, and Bane would be awesome. I know the whole "multitude of Batman characters" had got some frustrated, but you have to admit: a lot of the Batman characters are almost tailored for a game like this.
And THAT'S what Jack Burton has to say about that.

Johnny Cage- Obviously my fav of all time. I dont know I just liked all his moves n all sure theres alot of people that hate his cocky but is a very great character whom I hope is downloadable.
Basically what I wish they would do is make a downloadable package like this:
Johnny Cage
Millena
Reptile
Kung Lao
Either make them free or at least buyable for a good amount of spending points
DC I dont know leaves it to boon or midway to decide
I hope they make downloadable stuff so bad it would make the game perfect.

I really wanted Lobo in the game and now that he wont be I'm rather pissed off. Sure Deathstroke is fine but Lobo was made for MK. Fuck. You. Boon.

Captain Marvel made it in over Green Arrow.....*throws a werewolf at a communist bear* FUCK! I thought Green Arrow would make it into the last two spots.
AND WTF IS UP WITH BARAKA! Baraka, Jax and Kano should be out, Kung Lao, cage and Goro should be in.
No Johnny Cage makes me a sad panda

Kung Lao, Mileena, Reptile and Quan Chi should be in there on the MK side. Having Kano and Jax in there over any of those 4 is disgraceful, imo. Even Baraka shouldn't be there over them, imo. I just hope they are unlockable or downloadable.
MK:
Johnny Cage
Reptile
Mileena
Kung Lao
DC:
To be honest, I've expected everyone of those characters (besides like one) after the Kotaku hints were thrown out. But, I've wanted to see Lobo though.
I'm actually fine with the roster in the MK side. I may be the minority, but I always thought that Jax made sense to be in this game and I couldn't see why not. Sure he's not so likeable (especially for me, I didn't like his character in MKDA - MKA), but I always thought that maybe Jax in this game would be better and that it made sense since Jax was pretty iconic imo back in MK2-MK3 days.
Kano however could've been without but I can't complain since he's already in.
Hopefully we have downloadable content so we could get DLC's.
My guess (if 2 per side):
MK
Johnny Cage
Reptile
DC
Lobo
Aquaman (with hook) or any other hero like Hawkman/Green Arrow/Nightwing/etc.
Johnny Cage
Reptile
Mileena
Kung Lao

There were only 4 other characters I wanted.
& if DLC is happening, then 3 of my 4 are guaranteed.
1.) Mileena: Was absolutely enraged when she didn't make the roster. She is very iconic! Dead Cert DLC.
2.) Kung Lao - I love this character, and his abilities are brilliant! Dead Cert DLC.
3.) Sindel: She was inspired by comic books and would fit into one perfectly. Maybe her abilities could have finally been realised on Next-Gen. Potential suprise DLC.
4.) Reptile. - Brilliant character. You have to have him in. My moneys on DLC, but could pop up as a secret character! Dead Cert DLC.

Not agreed. I like Baraka, Jax (don't hate me) AND Kano. Kung Lao and Goro are cool enough but Cage? Cage is so lame dude. MK: I don't know DC: Brainiac
