Today has been miserable from the start. Been recently having the worst headaches I've ever had, and today's took heavy amounts of medications for killing pain, including a Px one, to KO it. Even then, I'll bet it's just gonna come back again tomorrow. Right now, I'm the only room in the house without heat in this FRIGID arctic bite because the pipes going to my baseboard heating are frozen... it's due to where they go before getting to my room. God only knows if it's contributing to my massive headaches, and who knows how badly on the pipes they're frozen up and if they'll make it to the warmer, not-as-cold days without bursting and having a big-ticket fix needing to happen...

And then I've got THIS to worry about on top of all that.

It never ends with me, does it...

I concentrated mainly on the visual presentation, because as stated above I do think it is the most immportant.

I seem to have the opposite philosophy, seeing as I make a special point not to consider the art quality of these entries. For one, it's a matter of fairness: not everyone here has access to amazing artwork, but we all have access to ideas, and the idea is what we're ultimately judging.

If you believe that a character's appearance is their biggest selling point, consider this: On the character select screen, you might choose to play the coolest looking character first. But if the gameplay sucks and playing that character isn't fun, how long will you stick with it? How long before you say "this guy sucks" and switch to someone else?

Also, look around at the fan chatter whenever a new character is announced, or an old one is redesigned. At first you will hear a lot of complaints about how "this character looks stupid," but people quickly get over it. However, if a character's story is stupid or their gameplay is stupid, you will never, ever hear the end of it. Perfect example: Cyber Sub-Zero. When he was first announced, did you hear even one person say a single word about his costume? Or was everybody too much in an uproar about his story and how it supposedly ruined Mortal Kombat forever? People care so much more about Sub-Zero's story than they ever did about his ever-changing wardrobe.

I honestly think that in a contest where we're creating characters and not just drawing pictures for the fan subs, the art is of little importance. Sure, you can focus on visual presentation and earn a lot of votes for your artwork -- but if people are so dazzled by the art that they forget to read and think about the rest of it, then those votes may win the contest but they won't do you any good as a creator.

When the MK developers gather around a table and pitch ideas, they use spoken words and napkin doodles, not fully rendered artwork. And pitching ideas is exactly what we're doing here. Popular characters like the Simberleen, Mizrath, and Blight don't even have pictures, and two of them have excellent win records. Art definitely helps to get immediate attention, but it's not everything, and not even the biggest thing. In the end, a napkin doodle of Raiden and a JAX007 drawing of Raiden are both about the same character.

By the way I have a question for you, did you pay money for your artwork or was it a favor from a friend, because I think I can do alot more justice for your character in the art departament ( no offence to the original creator).

The anime style doesn't really suit his ruggid appearance .

If you must know, it was a mutual favor. I paid for an art commission to help out a friend who needed it, and she gave me a drawing that came out much better than I could hope to have done myself. I'm very satisfied with the result, being in the top three or four art pieces in the whole contest, and as I said, art isn't a big concern for me anyway. I really just wanted a clear image because he has too many details to describe briefly in words.

But if you would like to draw him, go on ahead! I'd love to see what you come up with.

Anime style? I'm not seeing it. Not from any anime I've come across anyway.

How is this fair? In a contest , the better contender wins, right? Some people offer what others can't therefore they lose due to this fact. There is nothing fair in your idea it's straight communism.
Think about it, if I sumbmitted a blank page and just two drawings would It be fair to say, that i don't have any ideas for the story or moves but atleast I have a pretty good drawings going on.

I could not disagree more, you see when a character is in developpement, IN FIGHTING GAMES in particular , it is not the art that is drawn on sticky notes.

It is actually the general idea for the character his basic story, moves ,gameplay and origins on which they will expand later on . Then these notes are given to a professional concept artist who has to come up with atleast 8 to 10 concepts for said character. We are talking about fully rendered paitings ,and before you say that this would take up so much time if a proffessional knows what he is doing it will take about 6 to 8 hours.
A picture tells a thousand words...

For me drawing is nothing special , anybody can learn it . I am going to use a metaphor I heard from one of the best digital artists today.

Paiting is like a language, sure you know english but can you write poems with it? Can you top Shakespere or Ernest Hemingway, just by knowing the english language?

So in other words, drawing is easy if you are serious about it , you can perfect it for around 6 to 8 months ( I am no where near serious enough with my art, that is why i still have some major flaws), But it's the ideas and presentation that is of most importance . If something is not aesthetically pleasing to the eye, most people will NEVER take the time and read through mountains of text.

"Also, look around at the fan chatter whenever a new character is announced, or an old one is redesigned. To be honest you are not being fair. Sub-Zero is one of MK's icons , a well established character and they tried to change his appearance and story so much that he is hardly recognisable. It's like turning Scorpion into a mortal peacefull monk. And by the way people did care about his appearance , he is just a generic cyborg like cyrax ,smoke and sektor before him. They turned one of the most original characters in video game history ( in 1992 the freeze move along side with scorpion's spear were unheard of ) and turned him into a generic bot.

As for people "getting over how stupid a new character looks" is still debatable. I can't see alot of Cobra,Kira , Hsu Hao, Darrius ,Dairouetc etc fans around here.BUT if a new character is done properly like Reiko or Kenshi, even Havik and Hotaru you can actually see the comunity's approval.

Actually, the character's biography is intended to be the focal point of the entire competition; the artwork is merely eye candy. Case in point: "This year we're giving away ... artwork based on the winning entry by Felipe "JAX007" Aguir." So, submitting your own illustration is optional and shouldn't have an impact, marginal or otherwise, on whether or not your entry collects votes. Besides, in my honest opinion, the artwork you submitted for your character isn't all that impressive anyway.

I agree my artwork is majorly flawed and is nowhere near the artistic value of some people on this site.

Just as I predicted, Xorah is the deciding factor to whether or not Persephone stays in this competition.

If my Persephone loses to her, she's out of the tournament. In addition, in order for Persephone to qualify for the quarter-finals, Kira must lose her final match.

I don't think I'll be voting in Kira's round. I want the outcome to be as fair as possible.

Kira and I must win and Ameerah has to lose against her other opponent as well if I have any chance at making it into the D1 slot.

If I'm in D2, then I may as well exit the competition.

Oh, for what it's worth, today I wasn't sick. One day out of six.

Thanks. I thought that giving him a costume where it was just what he looked like while, for lack of a better term "alive" would be boring. So this came to mind instead.

Someone please explain this to me. Assuming the same no. of wins, is X-1-0 BETTER than X-0-1? I don't see how that makes sense if it is supposed to be better. Surely a tie reflects better than a loss??
