So far most of these look great. They seem to be going for a more armored up appearance for the Outworld characters, which I'm mixed on. It looks good on Sub-zero, but I think Shang Tsung should be dressed in mostly robes.
My opinions on what we have so far:
Max Huang as Kung Lao - Perfect. He looks exactly like Kung Lao. This is the best wardrobe shown so far for sure.
Chin Han as Shang Tsung - Looks really good, I'm surprised how much this look conveys Shang Tsung. It reminds me quite a bit of Cary Tagawa. Like I said, could use more robes and less armor, but the overall look does say "shang tsung" well enough.
Sisi Stringer as Mileena - she looks good, except for the mouth. Looks more like the Joker smile than a natural tarkatan mouth.
Josh Lawson as Kano - I don't really like this one, but it does look better dolled up in the poster. The lack of metal plate over the eye takes away a lot of pizzazz from the look, and the rest of the look doesnt make up for it much.
Jessica McNamee as Sonya Balde- She is looking great as Sonya Blade. The outfit is pretty plain, but Sonya has historically worn pretty basic gear. She looks awesome aside from that, but what's the deal with those knives? Is she Kano Jr?
Joe Taslim as Sub-zero - Neat and fitting design. I think if it were my choice I'd have eased up on the armor for him too, but as it is, he looks like a cool ice warrior, which is good for the character.
Lewis Tan as Cole Young- Who is this guy again? But for real, all the respect to Lewis Tan, I'm just not on board with an OC being the star of the show. He looks alright, if not a little boring. I think Lewis Tan would work really well as Kuai Liang instead.
Ludi Lin as Liu Kang- he looks better every time I see him; Ludi Lin has really transformed to match this part. He looks like a combination of MK11's and MKX's designs, but a little more stripped down and with more subdued colors. I was happy to learn that he actually has some red and black trim on his outfit. I do wish he had his red headband though.
Tadanobu Asano as Raiden - at first glance, I didn't like this look; I thought the hat looked big and awkward. However, looking over it some more, I see his face is a really good match for Raiden, and I appreciate the detail. I think the hat looks awkward because he doesn't have his hood or hair covering up his ears or the side of his face. If he had that, I think it would look great.
Mechad Brooka as Jax - I saw him before, and I gotta say the shirt makes it look significantly less good. I would have also really loved if he had a crew cut like in MK2 and 3 instead of having his head completely shaven. They did right with those metal arms though.
Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion - This one looks good. I recently saw a picture of Scorpion from the original MK movie, and I appreciate how much better this one looks. Same with many other characters, I would have eased up on the armor just a little, but overall looks good. Can't wait to see this in action!
I'm pretty impressed overall with the character designs here. They do mostly seem true to the spirit of the characters' in game counterparts. And despite my gripes with some of the story decisions, I am hoping to enjoy this movie, and fingers crossed that it will be the one to show that videogame based movies can be good.
