In the video it is stated that the brother is killed before the tournament.
It seems to me that this could just be a retcon of Sub-Zero's story.
Killing off the brother before the game even starts makes it less convoluted and easier to follow for newcomers to the series.
They already did something similar with the meantioning of Quan-chi being the one who resurrected Scorpion.

Why would they create a story vignette that takes place in the middle of the games plot?

So my take is that the killing of Sub-Zero's brother is now just his backstory, not something that happens during the game.

Well now......that's some stuff. I'm really screwed in the mind now.... What the hell is going on anyway? Are they retconning things already, because the only things that should be retconned are the things that Raiden changes. They can't just change things or tweak things just because.

No one seems to realize the retcon that passed. Seriously. Remember John Tobias' story regarding the Sub-Zero origins? The reason why it's Sub-Zero V & Sub-Zero VI and not Sub-Zero I & II.

Sub-Zero IV was the father of both Sub-Zero V (Now Noob Saibot) & Sub-Zero VI (Now leader of the Lin Kuei.) Sub Zero IV was in America on a mission for a few years. He got with an american woman for cover, got 3 children. One of which was female. When the mission was over he took his kids (with the exception of the girl) to China, leaving the young girl with her mother.

That's what I said earlier in the thread - they should've mentioned that their own father abducted them from their mother's care and brought them back to his clan.

But just because they didn't mention it right now,in what is obviously a short,concise introductory video into a character's origins,does not mean it was retconned.

On a sidenote,I always thought that the sister grew up to be Frost. :3 I mean,it's been implied that you basically have to have cryomancer blood in you in order to have ice powers,so what are the chances that there's another descendant of an extinct Outworld tribe in Earthrealm,that she's unrelated to Sub and that she just happened to show up on his doorstep?

They never became "friends" as such, but in Mortal Kombat 4 Scorpion realized that Quan Chi was the one who murdered his clan and family, not Subbie, and thus they made peace with one another.

why is it that whenever the team posts something storywise it only ends up confusing us even more? i mean, i'm grateful that the theory of cyber-Sub-Zero is all but dismissed now. but someone needs to pull Ed or one of the writers to the side in an interview and ask plainly what's the deal with Sub-Zero in this game.

People ahve to start thinking in more than "this is what it is and thats it" because that isnt going to work here. Some of the things mentioned to be fact are actually amtters of canon perspective by the character. We know for timeline reasons that Quan Chi, this time around has STILL killed Scorpions family. But yet his vignette sais its Subzero. This si a mask for new palyers who dont know anything to still experience new twists. That is from Scorpions perspective saying "He kileld them all (which he was LEAD TO BELIEVE) and I am going to kill him".

This game is based upon 3 games. Scorpions Vignette clearly takes place before/beginning of MK1. But this Subzero vignette doesn't have me quite as convinced. I think that perhaps BOTH Subzeros will appear in this game, but primarily, the younger one will be the playable. During MK1 storyline we know Scorpion is going to Kill the elder Sub-zero (forshadowed in his vignette and confirmed in subbys vignette). Now its not like its gonna be the younger brother that he kills, so there is going to be some sort of mediation in how this goes down. With the possible eye-scar not happening, this could get real interesting in terms of player models used or what they decide to do.

I think they will make a slight change to the original sub-zero representing the elder, we WONT play as him in the MK1 section and instead, we will kick off the MK2 section of the game with him giving us our younger, playable subby.

Again, the "im going to kill scorpion" train of thought is moreso for state of mind and hype. This is Deffinately the younger brother still. Why would a "Game for fans" (Ed Boon) suddenly change the storylines of 2 (3 technecally) characters that have a huge fanbase possibly eliminating one or 2? No reason

This is the younger sub. thats it. done deal. Yes they said the screenshots were of older and he would be in this game. Guess what, they were telling the truth but I believe it will only be for story purposes so we can kill him with our own control of scorpion.

Young Sub-Zero is in, awesome! In Sub's MK2 bio didn't it say that it was the original Sub-Zero as well? So the MK Website saying that the original Subby had been resurrected sort of fits in with the MK2 story.

Really glad that the MK team put the Young Sub-Zero in over the original.

Everyone seems to forget that even though the elder Sub Zero (Bi Han) Killed scorpion on the mission to retrieve the map to the temple of the elements, Quan Chi exterminates the Shirai Ryu clan (Scorpion's clan) and delivers the remains of the founder (Takaeda) as payment for the Lin Kuei's services. When Bi Han encounters Scorpion in the netherrealm, Scorpion is under the impression that Bi Han was responsible for the deaths of his family and clan. When they meet at the tournament, Scorpion kills Bi Han as vengeance for the death of himself, his family and clan. Therefore he DOES unjustly murder Bi Han. Learning about this, His younger brother Kwai Liang trains to take his brother's place and accepts the mission to take out Shang Tsung but with the ulterior motive of taking revenge on his brother's murderer.

Being that the game will encompass MK 1, 2 and 3, In story mode Dub Zero will first be Bi Han up until he is killed by Scorpion. Afterwards it will be Kwai Liang. Later in the story we will see Bi Han resurrected as Noob Saibot.

And as for the cyborg twist...It IS possible that during the MK3 period of the game, Kwai Liang COULD be captured and converted with Smoke escaping instead.

2. Just "some guy" took them this time, instead of their father this time? Or is that guy their father? When they show that part, their are two parental figures there watching the children be "abducted".

3. Where's their little sister? Not that they had to show her in Sub-Zero's viginette. But the question still stands.

Great stuff overall. If you watch this one, and then Scorpions, you start to get a good grasp on the confusion behind why these two are fighting in the first place . haha...

Phew, from watching that I think we will pretty much get Young Sub as our main Sub-Zero, which is what i wanted. Was so peeved when I first heard it was older sub.

To be honest I have no idea why people wanted the older Sub so bad, if he stayed, there would be no young subby, the one most have come to know and love much more, and there could of been a chance of a cyber Sub-Zero. Hell no. So happy about this, now Noob will hopefully be in, which is great!

So why is everyone assuming that Bi Han (O.Subby)'s death will not be included in the story mode? I'm pretty sure we're going to play as O.Subby and then when he dies switch to Y.Subby. They'll just be alternate costumes... and play identically.

Although I'm still skeptical about the way the story will be done in this game, I have to say that I'm impressed with what they did for this viginette. It's great that we now know the names of the Sub-Zero brothers, and I'm glad to know the younger Sub-Zero is in this game. I look forward to both him and Noob Saibot (granted that he'll be in this one). That previous bio for Sub-Zero was a bit confusing, but I'm kind of glad they went in this direction instead.
