I'm up for a beatdown on Gragtek if you've got the time

Are you kidding?! There's always time for a Full-Kontact Character Beatdown!

GRAGTEK

Name: Our first thought is that the Lin Kuei captured a Zaterran and decided to cyborg it, creating a Mortal Kombat-sized version of Mechagodzilla. That would be so boss to hear the announcer introduce that one onstage. It would be a real goddamn dinosaur laser fight.

Appearance: Unfortunately it's just an older-looking Kano who's spent too many years in the sun. Now we can already hear the objection: For the last time, he's NOT Kano! He's... DIFFERENT than Kano! But that would be an incorrect assertion, and here is a list of reasons why:

1) First and most obviously, it's the face. He has hideous facial damage on one side that he covers with a bionic heat vision viewer. But that's different! Kano has it on his right side, but Gragtek has it on his left! It's totally not the same!

2) Well then, how do you explain the small trophies of his conquests that he ties into his beard, just the way Kano kept a lock of Sonya's hair in MKDA? But Kano kept that because he lost! Gragtek keeps his because he won! That's not just different, it's BETTER!

Story: 3) Oh would you look at that -- he's also a ruthless mercenary thug working for Outworld. But... but he's dif--

4) And also, he got his cyber eye augmentation from (guess where?) the Black Dragons. Yeah well... um... werepiranhas! KANO NEVER HAD WEREPIRANHAS.

Touché, good sir. You win this round. (But considering Kano hails from Australia, the land of the most bizarre and deadly animals on the face of the earth, there's a good chance that he had those too.)

After reading through his story, it seems like Gragtek spends a good chunk of his life not committing any actual genocide, but getting drunk in taverns and telling wild stories about his golden years when he was genociding shit left and right. In his farfetched tavern tales, he's a conquering badass who single-handedly hunted down and destroyed entire species that nobody ever heard of. The one time he claims to have exterminated a people that was actually proven to exist (the cryomancers) it's a race that famously isn't even extinct, and the whole thing turns into a big fish story about the one that got away. We're left to question whether Gragtek was ever involved in the cryomancers' demise at all, or if he's just drunkenly taking credit for the work of Shao Kahn's entire army.

Nowadays Gragtek does nothing to back up his outrageous claims. He spends his years knocking back bottle after bottle of terrible Outworld beer, telling everyone who will pretend to listen that he'd totally go back to doing genocide again, if only Shao Kahn would resurrect him some Zaterrans to kill. In his heart he knows damn well the Emperor would never do that... but that ain't his fault the Emperor's holding him back, now is it?

The bio admits more than once that Gragtek might just be making up a bunch of baloney -- and after hearing his drunken were-fish tales, we're inclined to believe that. In the end, we feel a little sad for the deluded old scuzzball. He tries so hard to be a badass, but winds up sounding more like Grampa Simpson.

Gameplay: First of all, who is John? Is his name, like, John Gragtek or something? That's actually a pretty cool name, like an action hero. Maybe all this posing as a mercenary is just him trying to live up to his name.

Anyway. According to the description, Gragtek's fighting style is apparently based on just making stuff up (like the moves, and the name) which really comes as no surprise. He does carry quite a mixed bag of genocide gear: acid balls, bear traps, everything you need to efficiently wipe out an entire civilization and leave no survivors. The only weapon he carries that's useless for mass murder is his flamethrower, which he never bothers to use in his fights except to club you with it in his X-ray. We figure that's because ordinary, non-Sektor flamethrowers from the local army surplus have such a short fuel supply that he needs to save that limited juice for his Fatalities.

He also has some non-weapon specials, the FHV Fist and the Jumping FHV Fist. After an extensive Google search we're still not sure what "FHV" stands for, but we've narrowed it down to two guesses. Either he punches his victims in the mouth with fists of cat herpes -- or more likely, it stands for "For Hire Vehicle" and John Gragtek's real job is driving a taxi.

A taxi driver who is also a serial killer, because in his second Fatality we learn that he loves to collect faces from his victims. This kind of sordid Ed Gein-style trophy killing isn't quite the same as being a one-man instrument of mass extinction, but at least we give him credit for actually murdering people and not just talking about it. At this point though, we have to demand to see a Werepiranha or Sister face (maybe stitched into his outfit, or worn as a mask) which would be much better proof that he actually killed those things than a random tooth and a scrap of wood.

Personality: At first Gragtek seems like an annoying but lovable old goof at the bar, regaling us with his tall tales and threatening to herpes-punch us if we say we don't believe him. A little irritating, but a good source of entertainment and mostly harmless. But then we imagine him cutting off our faces in the back of a taxi, looking at us upside-down and saying, "Soon I can only see your body with my natural eye...." and suddenly we're praying that he didn't secretly lace our beers with Rohypnol.

Conclusion: Gragtek is a surprisingly disturbing character, but probably not in any way that was intended. His moves are playable, and he seems to be based on an interesting idea as a leader of Kahn's extermination squads. But the more his bio makes jokes about his past and his fighting skills, the less we're able to take him seriously.

Beatdown Lineup: Mizrath

Thank you for the beatdown

Oh blazes, how in the living crap did I overlook that? Of course it was the fighting style. Once I got to the part about how the name was just meaningless syllables I guess I forgot it even existed. Whoops....

Lurker_of_Rapture Wrote:
Wouldn't mind one of those character beatdowns for my character.

Then grab a spoon, 'cause here comes another heaping helping of Full-Kontact Character Beatdown!

MIZRATH

Name: A portmanteau of "misery" and "wrath," the name implies a character both grim and powerful. Some kind of hellspawned eldritch horror that creeps onstage accompanied by its own ominous Latin chorus. One minor issue is that those syllables together don't roll off the tongue quite as easily as names like "Motaro," or even more similar-sounding names like "Ashrah." The zr combination gives the name a slightly stilted rhythm.

Appearance: The Moloch-sized Mizrath strikes a very powerful and scary first impression, and his overall beastly theme is pure 14-karat Mortal Kombat gold. (Not the game. Screw that game, obviously.) Considering that Minotaurs are supposed to be a thing in MK even though they haven't been well explored, we wonder if Mizrath is a demonic transformation of one of those. The cattle skull element provides some interesting new possibilities for facial battle damage: fractured bone, broken horns, caved-in eye sockets, etc. Although having an already-exposed skull might make head-breaking X-rays look a little comical. The enormous bony sword he carries makes both an intimidating weapon and a convenient dick joke, and it must be a truly ancient artifact carved from the leg bone of a dragon or an indricothere or something.

For his alternate costume, he wears the Elder Gods armor from MKA Kreate-a-Fighter. Now this has us curious: is Mizrath in fact an Elder God, based on primal beast-god archetypes like Anubis or the red buffalo man from American Gods? That would be a very interesting and realistic take, and plausible even though the Elder Gods are almost always portrayed as human-looking. If the Elder Gods can masquerade as dragons then surely they need not always look human, right? Gods in MK can go by different names, so different faces don't seem like much of a stretch. This would be a unique, exciting, and innovative progression from the norm.

Story: ... And here's where our high expectations get smartly slaughtered like a Sindel massacre.

The Elder Gods may be lazy and ineffective, but we don't remember them being so idiotic that they'd purposely create a monster that would destroy them all. The only time the Elder Gods ever lift a finger to do anything is when they need to save their own hides, and creating an indesructible abomination that is specifically designed to devour them and then starving the thing for eons is the bitter eternal arch-opposite of everything they stand for.

But we haven't even reached the limits of the Gods' failure here. First, they somehow failed to notice that lesser gods like Raiden are perfectly capable of defeating an Elder God, since that's exactly how Shinnok's first rebellion ended back in the dinosaur days. Then they wasted over fifty million years trying to think up the most insanely terrible "fail-safe" imaginable, finally deciding to desecrate the bones of one of their own fallen brothers to intentionally create the instrument of their own destruction. With logic like this, we almost think they got those Elder God bones by murdering one themselves. You know, just because.

After blindly stumbling into the Mortal Kombat tournament and eating Shao Kahn, Mizrath's built-in insatiable hunger is surprisingly left unsatisfied, and this six and a half-foot bull man proceeds to devour not only six septillion kilograms of planet Earth but also the entire entirety of the entire freaking multiverse.

You know what the worst part is? All that mass has to go somewhere when Mizrath eats it. There is no mention of him ever becoming a cosmic black hole, so we're forced to assume that all of it passed through his digestive tract, meaning that the Gods' stupidity has literally turned the universe to shit. Bull shit.

There are not enough italics to fully emphasize how incompetent this plan really is. It can only be described with bold print, and maybe SOME CAPITAL LETTERS. YOU FAIL, ELDER GODS. YOU FAIL SO HARD WE CAN'T EVEN FINISH THIS SENTENCE BECAUSE MIZRATH ATE ALL TH

Gameplay: Mizrath is clearly intended to be a big-boss rather than a playable character, and with his numerous nulling and draining specials he would certainly be a challenge. Blade of the Devourer is a projectile that kills EX meter on contact, making it almost impossible to use use X-rays or even Breakers to save yourself. He can also disable your specials, forcing you to get close enough for him to bite you and drain your health. Oh, and he doesn't just eat you... he also eats your projectiles. Taken all together, you might as well just forget about fighting him -- unless they bring back the Hara-Kiri feature from MKD, there is no way you can face this battle and still die as a human being.

There isn't anything particularly wrong with this character if he were made into a Challenge Tower encounter, but his moves are far too overpowered to fit in the Arcade ladder. Goro, Kintaro, Shao Kahn, Moloch, Onaga, and even the cheapest boss of them all, Motaro, would not stand a chance against him. This was probably the intention, to make him awesome and über-powerful -- but it also makes him unusable as anything but a Challenge mission.

On a side note, it seems strange that Mizrath can swallow a projectile while roaring loudly, which involves breathing out with considerable force. It would make more sense for this move to work like Kintaro's "Breathe" special from MKA when he inhales and sucks the opponent closer. But we can't really argue the point with him, because our lungs are currently being digested.

Personality: Mizrath is hungry. That's all he is and all he ever has to be, and all the annals of time will remember of him.

Conclusion: Mizrath has a striking image and a well-developed devourer theme, but he really has no place in the story or the game except as a non-canon sideshow. Which is a shame, because if he had more human-level story elements and gameplay he might have been outstanding. Maybe if he really was an Elder God avatar who came down for a specific purpose, or an Oni set loose by Quan Chi to ambush the Earth warriors outside the tournament, or one of Shang Tsung's experiments gone out of hand -- almost any other story base might have produced a fearsome, memorable, playable character.

We'll probably change the system slightly for the finals, but the exact way we'll do that is to be determined, pending a few uncertain factors.

Please don't change the system it is very crucial to avoid favorism in a contest like this, and "strategies" , "alliances " and other forms of misjudgement.

A contest should be decided by the judges WITH the help of the community, but in the end the people giving away the prizes should be the deciding factor.

I think that's an important factor to remember. Always looking for the right balance, though. Hopefully this year's slight softening of the judge sway and the longer format has given everyone a chance to have some fun.

The biggest difference to the finals will probably just involve eliminating the possibility of draws. We might have a bigger panel of judges, but that's the uncertain factor we're waiting on. There may be a slight delay before the finals [forewarning], but we'll see how it goes and try to fill any short break.

I had some requests for character reviews before/early in the contest.
If there's time (obviously I've been busy today), we might start adding some more specific judge comments about the characters themselves. Don't hold me to the minute, but we'll try.

FYI: Round Robin Table updated, folks. Cheers!
