Ed Boon Teases Big Mortal Kombat Surprise In 2020
Creative Director teases an end and the future!

With this month's release of The Terminator: Mortal Kombat 11 is now halfway through its Kombat Pack DLC expansion. The sixth and final character will arrive March next year, but in an interview at the Brasil Game Show, Ed Boon has suggested there may still be a big surprise to come in 2020! Read on for details:

Asked via translator if there was any news he could share about new or future Mortal Kombat projects, Boon answered with a reserved and slightly cryptic "yes and no".

The Creative Director went on to allude to Mortal Kombat 11 being viewed as an end to the Mortal Kombat story, with more characters still coming to the game, and a "big surprise" in 2020. The Sao Paolo interview clip can be watched in the embedded video above.

The story of Mortal Kombat, we're pretty much calling this one the end of the story, but we're certainly not through with Mortal Kombat. You know, there's more characters that are going to come, and we have a big surprise coming next year for Mortal Kombat.

The MK11 Kombat Pack is scheduled to release Sindel in November, with comic book guest characters The Joker and Spawn bringing it to conclusion next year. The final download release is forecast as late as March.

Data-mining of the game revealed the possibility for additional characters still to be revealed for subsequent release. Listings for undetermined "Environments" and "Story" were also noted in the examined files. Data-mining and "Kombat Pack 2" have since been playfully referenced in-game via Terminator's victory sequence. Ed Boon previously confirmed the leak of the main roster in an interview with Gameinformer, but plans for additional characters remain unverified.

It's unclear if Boon's interview has simply ruled out the possibility of additional DLC chapters for Story Mode, or if Mortal Kombat 11's time-bending plotline will indeed serve as an end to the saga.

MK11's story closed with the defeat of Kronika and the rise of Liu Kang as a god who will oversee the creation of a new timeline. It presents an ambiguously open-ended future for the series, similiar to 2006's Armageddon, with the prospect of another cyclical reboot similar in circumstance to 2011's Mortal Kombat, which served as a slightly altered retelling of the original three games.

Avenues for speculation about the series' future span the mundane to the radical, with some fans choosing to put their hopes in remastered re-releases of past games. The schedule of the last decade has conditioned fans to expect an Injustice sequel around the corner, but a big surprise involving Mortal Kombat might spell something different. Rumors of animation and comic book projects continue to linger without result.

Big things are certainly on the horizon for the Mortal Kombat franchise as a whole. Filming in Australia will continue next year for a theatrical reboot release coming in 2021. Free Mortal Kombat 11 Scorpion & Terminator PS4 Theme
Kommunity themes by BossLogic!

PlayStation now has a new Mortal Kombat 11 PS4 Theme you can download completely for free from the PlayStation Store! The "Kommunity Art" offering features the work of digital artist BossLogic. Take a look:

Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden appear in a fiery all-star MK background, while the second design celebrates the downloadable release of The Terminator guest character, with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a cyborg-eyed Dragon Logo! The artist explained his enthusiasm for the series and creative process in a post to PlayStation.Blog:

Video games are life and Mortal Kombat has been a mainstay for me. Sadly, I have less and less time to play these days — that’s why I play fighting games: they’re quick and fun. I love MK, I love Street Fighter, Tekken… these got me through some tough times. So when Sony and WB reached out to see if I could help design a new PS4 Theme to celebrate the release of Terminator and the MK Kommunity, I was onboard instantly.

Designing this Theme was an easy process. I started with the Terminator. When I think of Terminator, I think dark, post-apocalyptic world. I generally prefer stylization & simplicity, and I wanted the focus to be on Arnold. WB loved the piece so much, they asked for a second one featuring the iconic original MK characters. I decided to make Scorpion the focus of this one, with Raiden and Sub-Zero featured as well. I originally had others in there, like Noob Saibot, but it didn’t work for the Theme. I love the distinctive, bright imagery and I wanted to capture each character’s personality using their iconic colors. My favorite part was putting Scorpion on a mound of skulls. To me, that just screams vengeance.

BossLogic has made a name for himself with a variety of digital creations, including envisioning the live-action Mortal Kombat cast in costume and new movie logo. His work can be found on Twitter and Instagram, as well as digital campaigns for the Avengers films.

You can download the Mortal Kombat 11 Community Art Theme right now! Got designs of your own you'd like to share? Submit your work to the MK Online Kreations archive and like, disuss, and share artist's work on the forum! Find and discuss more from the latest game on the Mortal Kombat 11 forum!

NBA Jam Book Released Today!
A detailed look inside inside a historic chapter at Midway Games.

First initially reported by Mortal Kombat Online last fall, a new book about the history of NBA Jam — and more broadly, Midway and the ‘90s arcade scene — is coming out today! Published by Boss Fight Books, NBA Jam by Reyan Ali is an intimate look at the making of the hit arcade game (which featured Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, and Raiden as secret characters in NBA Jam: Tournament Edition) and life at Midway’s office in Chicago around it.

The book’s story is built off over 60 original interviews, including ones with Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias, Sal DiVita (NBA Jam artist and Nightwolf/Sektor/Cyrax/Smoke in MK3), Kerri Hoskins (Jam cheerleader and Sonya in MK3), Doom co-creator John Romero, players Shaquille O’Neal and Glen Rice, secret characters DJ Jazzy Jeff and George Clinton, and the original NBA Jam team (including lead designer Mark Turmell, who worked closely with a young John Tobias at Midway on Smash T.V. and Total Carnage).

It also goes into the story of Midway’s downfall in depth, looking at the company before the company went bankrupt and the brand was bought by Warner Bros. in 2009.

NBA Jam is out in ebook formats today through Boss Fight Books’ site and Amazon Kindle ($4.99), and available for pre-order in print edition ($14.95) or paperback and ebook ($16.95). Click here to read an excerpt about the first night the public played NBA Jam at an arcade in Chicago in 1992.

In conjunction with the book’s release, Mortal Kombat Online is giving away a vintage mint-condition Mortal Kombat flyer. Midway sent these flyers like these to arcade owners to promote their new games and encourage them to buy them. This is an original piece of Mortal Kombat history — not a reproduction!

Terminator Pokes Fun at Mortal Kombat 11 Leaks
T-800 data mines Kombat Pack 2 & more.

The killing machine of the future has made its way to the present of Mortal Kombat 11, but does The Terminator hold information about our future? The guest character's victory sequence has got fans taking, making fun of pre-game data mining leaks with a list of prospective Kombat Pack 2 fighters. Read on for details:

Upon defeating an opponent, The Terminator will scan his victim with the iconic first-person data readout seen in now classic films. His analysis will assess an opponent's threat level, running through data directories that show folders for every fighter in the game, including Kombat Pack additions, and a list of unexpected names under a "\DLC\KP2\" directory [pictured above].

The fighters listed in the readout include Mileena, Rain, Li Mei, Sareena, Meat, and Mokap.

If you weren't already thinking this is just a joke, the last two names will almost certainly get you there. Meat and Mokap are avatars for Mortal Kombat's lighter side, last appearing together in 2006's compilation roster Armageddon, after debuting as comedic secret characters in Mortal Kombat 4, and Deadly Alliance, respectively.

Mileena and Rain remain sought-after fighters from the Trilogy era referenced by Mortal Kombat 11's time-bending story. Both appeared as opponents in Mortal Kombat X, where Li Mei and Sareena also made story mode cameos. Oblique references to the fighters can be found throughout MK11, with much of Mileena's oeuvre accessible through Kitana customization options. Rain, who was a non-playable opponent in MKX, can be seen falling to an impailed death in The Krypt.

Mortal Kombat X released a second Kombat Pack, but so far the only indications of additional character DLC, beyond next year's Spawn, come from data-mined references to Sheeva, Fujin, and Ash.

In an interview with Gameinformer, Creative Director Ed Boon acknowledged the roster had been leaked. It's presently unclear if this reference included the three unaccounted characters, or just those later confirmed with an official reveal. Ash vs Evil Dead actor Bruce Campbell denied involvement with the game.

The original data-mined leaks also reference DLC for "EnvironmentName", "StoryName", and "GOTY". The Terminator's analysis sequence also shows Environment, with additional DLC finishers referencing the series' past: Friendship, Babality, Animality, Hara-Kiri, and Ultra Kombo.

Do you think some or all of these things are in our future -- or is it just a joke? Share your wild theories about Judgment Day in the comments section below and ride into the Mortal Kombat 11 forum for more discussion topics. Special thanks to MK Online user Eyes_of_Wind for suggesting we take a closer look at this story!

Mortal Kombat Funko Pop! Wave 2 Klassics
Klassic Kombat gets Funko fresh with new Pops!

Funko are back with a second wave of their super-deformed Mortal Kombat Pop! vinyl figures! Wave 2 is coming soon, getting klassic with a character selection of four fan-favourite fighters from the original arcade series! Check out the preview:

Liu Kang, Raiden, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion have jumped right out of the earliest games to feature designs inspired by Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II!

Liu Kang and Raiden most notably have their pared back designs from the first game, where Liu Kang was kicking it in simple black pant with white shoes, while Raiden wore predominantely white on black. The retro tinged palette swaps of Sub-Zero and Scorpion are differentiated with ice ball and spear rope dart, featuring designs that borrow heavily from the first MK, with perhaps a little nod to MKII Sub-Zero. You can click the thumbnails above to examine each fighter more closely!

Raiden will also be available with a GameStop exclusive variant that poses the lightning-wielding thunder god in a Funko Pop! version of his iconic win stance. Both versions of Raiden will hold the power of lightning in their fingers.

Wave 2 doesn't have an official release date yet. If you're lucky, you still might be able to find all four of these fighters in their Mortal Kombat X and 2011 inspired Wave 1 Funko Pop! incarnations. No signs of Kitana or Goro in the new series.

Who else would you like to see get the Funko Pop! treatment? What do you think of the klassic designs? Teleport to the comments below to share your thoughts and keep your eyes peeled to the Media & Merchandise forum for more discussion and updates!

Terminator T-800 Mortal Kombat 11 Character Render
A dark fate awaits MK11 in October!

A dark fate awaits Mortal Kombat 11 when the next crossover guest fighter arrives this week! Terminator T-800 is comes to Kombat Pack downloadable content starting Tuesday. Know your enemy with a closer look at the cinematic icon::

The likeness of Arnold Schwarzenegger graces the iconic T-800. He may have aged for the present day of Skydance and Paramount Picture's upcoming November sequel Terminator: Dark Fate, but with black leather jacket and steely cold stare -- he's instantly recognizable as the cyborg killing machine of the future!

You can see more of the T-800 in action in the official Terminator Gameplay Trailer. Early access begins October 8th, with new downloadable skins and modes on their way, including Harley Quinn Cassie Cage!

Sadly, Schwarzenegger's voice doesn't appear in game, but how do you like the realistic recreation of one of action cinema's most recognizable faces? Slide into the comments below to tell us what you think! Find and discuss more from the game in the Mortal Kombat 11 forum!

Cassie Cage Cosplays Harley Quinn in New MK11 Skin
A touch of madness in Mortal Kombat 11!

Players who've purchased the Mortal Kombat 11 Kombat Pack can look forward to Cassie Cage falling in with the wrong crowd with a DC Comics inspired skin! See the full official render here:

"Cassie Quinn" pays homage to DC's Gotham City siren Harley Quinn, who's become a staple of the NetherRealm Studios developed fighting series: Injustice.

Harley made playable appearances in Injustice: Gods Among Us and Injustice 2, as well as featuring in related tie-in merchandise, such as Injustice comic books and action figures. She's also been in the news appearing in trailers for the 2020 theatrical release of Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), starring Margot Robbie.

We've seen Cassie Cage go punk for Mortal Kombat Mobile, and just like Harley Quinn, she's all about kicking ass and chewing bubble gum. Does the red and black harlequinn homage therefore make plenty of make sense? You be the judge in the comments below and when the new skin becomes available October 8th!

Cassie Quinn will also join guest fighter The Terminator in the new update, along with other skins and updates. Watch the T-800 Terminator trailer and join the discussion on the Mortal Kombat 11 forum for more!

T-800 Terminator Enters Mortal Kombat 11 in Trailer
Terminator T-800 targets Jax, Kano and Scorpion!

Some action heroes are getting too old for this, but the Terminator T-800 is still carrying out his programming with supreme eficiency and maximum prejudice! Watch the killing machine of the future take on Jax and Kano in the latest Mortal Kombat 11 trailer!

A box of Johnny Cage action figures hides a nasty surprise as the aged Arnold Schwarzenegger enters the fight. It's one of several callbacks to iconic scenes from the long running Terminator film franchise, which began in 1984.

The actor's likeness is taken directly from the upcoming Terminator: Dark Fate sequel in theatres November 1st. Earlier reports that a soundalike would need to be used appear to be accurate, with line readings robotic, but slightly unconvincing.

The T-800's organic outer layer may appear matured, but his fighting moves show no signs of rust! The Terminator is notably spry, closing distance quickly to unleash hard hitting moves and grappling, with an arsenal of shotgun and automatic pistol fire to inflict significant damage at range! When Scorpion bathes him in hellfire, or he takes a Fatal Blow, his metal endoskeleton is exposed to all.

Terminator has been a long time coming as one of several guest characters discussed for Mortal Kombat X! He was pipped by the likes of horror icon Jason Voorhees, but comparisons to the plodding slasher will be surprisingly difficult to draw. The only thing they share in common in Mortal Kombat is that they won't stop. Ever!

The Terminator arrives as the first guest fighter from the downloadable The Kombat Pack with early access starting October 8th. How does he stack up on Judgment Day? Jump into the comments below to share your thoughts and join the resistance on the Mortal Kombat 11 forum!
