MKX Kombat Kast Episode 7 Live Stream - Characters
New Mortal Kombat X Kombat Kast promises mysterious content

In a short few hours NetherRealm Studios will go live with the seventh episode of their Mortal Kombat X Kombat Kast via Twitch. Be with us to discuss all the highs and lows as you stream it right here and on the forum!

Creative lead Ed Boon dipped back into the scramble days to tease some clues: "slainho" "garnwum" "sheappins" & "gallofend".

Figuring out the first clue is especially easy with a Shaolin Trailer released. "Warmgun" may refer to gunslinging newcomer Erron Black. We're going to assume that's "Happiness" and not Apep Shins, but how that relates to "FallenGod" is anyone's guess. An allusion to Bo' Rai Cho, perhaps? A general state of pleasure amidst the bullets and carnage, perhaps?

Mortal Kombat X: Shaolin Trailer
Liu Kang confirrrrmed! Shaolin Trailer reteams Kang & Kung Lao!

Klassic Shaolin Monks Kung Lao & Liu Kang are back in action in the latest Mortal Kombat X trailer! Released to MAXIM Russia by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment - the Shaolin Trailer is our first look at some familiar faces:

Following the reboot plot of Mortal Kombat (2011): the klassic heroes have risen as revenant slaves of the necromancer Quan Chi and fallen elder god Shinnok!

The trailer features the first confirmed sighting of drunken master and Shaolin mentor Bo' Rai Cho. The Outworld convert was first introduced in 2002's Deadly Alliance and that stage only appears to be a Story Mode cameo. Webseries casting rumors suggest Kung Jin will be taken into the Wu Shi Academy and trained by Cho.

Watch closely and you may notice some never-before-seen sequences from the upcoming game and its much talked about Story Mode. Kommunity Artist fear-sAs Featured in Mortal Kombat X
fear-sAs Kold War Scorpion & Tremor designs featured in MKX!

His work has been featured by the likes of Kotaku, and appropriated by fans across the web. Artist Sergey Svistunov is better known to MK Online users as fear-sas, but fandom at large is about to know him as a Mortal Kombat X designer!

Advertised as a GameSpot exclusive [full story]: Kold War Scorpion [above] was the first piece of design art to elevate fear-sas from highly talented fan, to professionally featured artist.

The design will appear in Mortal Kombat X as a playable DLC skin for the series' most enduring icon. Reimagining the ninja spectre as a ghostly soldier of the Soviet Union; the concept owes at least residual inspiration to the work of Mark Millar & Dave Johnson - the team behind Superman: Red Son. Their 2004 Eisner Award winning mini-series reimagined Superman as a Soviet participant in 1950s cold war tensions. NetherRealm Studios brought the Elseworlds incarnations to life in Injustice: Gods Among Us, also introducing versions of characters not featured in the original story [read more].

Fans watching the trailer reveal for the Mortal Kombat X: Kombat Pack may have recognized another of fear-sas' designs coming to the fore. The surprise downloadable reintroduction of Tremor closely echoes his "Mortal Kombat Tremor" -- a fan-art piece originally created in 2014.

Distancing the character from his Special Forces palette swap origins; the new design conjures popular fan-fiction with a more overtly earth-powered warrior. No longer a mere bruiser pounding the ground - this Tremor literally holds the power of sediment in his rocky hands!

MKX: Behind the Scenes as Downloadable Content Begins
Creative Lead Shares Behind the Scenes Snaps of Future DLC Characters

They've revealed the downloadable characters in the Mortal Kombat X Kombat Pack - but they still have to make them! Creative Director Ed Boon has used Twitter to micro blog NetherRealm Studios' progress as the game goes gold, and production on bonus characters begins:

"Sketching some DLC character moves & stuff for tomorrow's motion capture shoot."

"Motion Capture at NetherEnds Studio with @CarlosPesina."

Boon's trademark stick figure story board offers a glimpse ahead into one or more DLC character's moves. The impression of a projectile that can be read several ways, in favour of Predator's arsenal of high tech weapons, or Tanya's Edenian boomerang.

Figuring out the motion capture snapshot is a whole lot harder. You can get a better frame of reference by going deeper into the "mokap" process in this week's Story Mode Motion Capture Breakdown!

Each Kombat Pack character download will signify a new playable fighter and three additional costume skins for kombatants on the main roster.

The Ultimate Horror Pack [Pack: May 5th, Sale: May 12th]
Playable character: Jason Voorhees
Horror skins: Vampiress Mileena, Kraken Reptile & Pharoah Ermac.

The Klassic Pack #1
Playable character: Tanya
Klassic skins: Kano, Sonya Blade & Liu Kang

The Predator/Prey Pack
Playable character: Predator

The Klassic Pack #2
Playable character: Tremor
Klassic skins: Quan Chi, Jax & Kung Lao

Additional skins for playable characters finally lock in klassic kombatants Jax and Liu Kang for a Mortal Kombat X return. The inclusion of a Carl Weathers Jax skin caps off unlikely rumors that the Predator and Rocky star would be included as a downloadable extra opposite the alien hunter.

All downloadable characters in the pack represent cult fan favourites who've garnered support in the build to MKX. Jason & Predator have frequently factored into guest character requests, while Tremor has made the journey from obscure spin-off boss to download fighter through the intense support of fans. So evident is the fan influence that Tremor even boasts a fan design by MKOmmunity user fear-sas.

GDC Previews Paint Picture of Mortal Kombat X Story Mode
Mortal Kombat X Story Mode Chapter 1 Was on Display at GDC!

During last week's Game Developers Conference, various press members were granted a hands-on preview with Mortal Kombat X and the first chapter of its exciting new Story Mode! Early word revealed Kenshi & Johnny Cage's playable involvement but with embargoes lifted, new details are flooding in from all sides!

Character speculation will be one of the last topics to die, especially with downloadable content beyond the horizon! Polygon has one of the best previews, revealing the ambitious scope of the game that awaits: "There are battles with hundreds of non-player characters and Mortal Kombat cameos, Urbano said, on a scale that NetherRealm just couldn't pull off before."

Among the "hundreds" of cameos are some expected returns. Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Kenshi, Raiden & Fujin reportedly lead the fight for the home team, while undead revenants of Jax, Sindel, Stryker, Kabal & Smoke battle under the control of Quan Chi. This continues the plot initiated during the last game, where the defeated warriors' souls were seized in the Netherrealm. IGN notes an appearance by Nightwolf, who was also among the dead fighters, as well.

It's the Netherrealm's invasion that is the subject of story mode's opening chapter. This refers to the expected continuation of the new timeline, revisiting the original plot of MK4. We saw glimpses of invading villain Shinnok and his struggle with the heroes in the Story Mode Trailer and again in the Cage Family Trailer. According to IGN, Shinnok is the final battle of Chapter 1.

No one has been able to distinguish the playable roster from the story mode cameos. Shinnok and Jax both appeared in one-on-one fights - each with 3 variations, according to Hardcore Gamers. IGN notes, "We have no idea yet, but there are a bunch more slots on the character select screen that need to be filled..." Polygon adds, "... we did see a couple of unannounced playable fighters, including Erron Black, in the game's attract mode."

Migrating from challenge modes in Mortal Kombat (2011) and Injustice: Gods Among Us into the story are "quick time events". Simple inputs determine the outcome of conflict that doesn't fit into traditional side-to-side kombat. GameInformer have a particularly evocative description of their experience, which explains the continuing sequence involving Johnny Cage and a notably heroic Kenshi:

"They’re en route to Raiden’s Sky Temple, where the lightning god is making a last stand against Shinnok’s forces. Whirring over the on-the-ground action sounds like a pretty great plan until the windshield is pierced by another familiar sight: Scorpion’s chain-blade. The soldiers in the back of the helicopter look around frantically, when Scorpion surprises the crew by appearing in the rear of the aircraft. There’s a battle, of course, and I’m paying such close attention to it all that I miss an unexpected quick-time event. It doesn’t kick me out to a game-over screen, but the action immediately shifts to show Johnny Cage blowing a series of blocks and taking damage. I do a better job of keeping up over the next few sequences, and Johnny reverses the course of the fight. He more than holds his own until Sub-Zero joins the party, freezing a couple of attackers’ heads and shattering them against each other."

Netherrealm War: Fujin & Raiden battle fallen elder god Shinnok.

Polygon's Michael McWhertor notes the radical shift in balance between passive and active experiences in the new mode, "The ratio of cutscene to playable fighting game leans heavily toward the former; I was a little surprised to see how little I actually played compared to how much I passively watched as Johnny Cage and his Earthrealm allies talked about what was going on." He describes the content as entertaining enough to hold his interest - a safe bet for diehard fans of the series! GameInformer's Jeff Cork echoed these sentiments, "With the setup out of the way, I was eager to do more than tap buttons every once in a while to keep the action going. Soon enough, I got my wish."

Gameplay has elicited few complaints from available previews. The newly revealed Johnny Cage fights with variations called A-List, Fisticuffs & Stunt Double. Like other characters [eg; Kitana], each variation entails different risks, rewards and gimmicks, leaving the usual Shadow Kick and Split Punch neutral to all styles.

According to Polygon; A-List boasts charge benefits for Cage's special moves - slower to execute, but worth more damage. Fisticuffs adds the golden "CAGE" knucks seen in the Cage Family gameplay, which can be enhanced with a "fist bump" to increase damage and add flashy combos. Stunt Double promises to be the most controversial, introducing a yellow clone that can execute special moves, or absorb impact. In function, it bares some similarity to Noob Saibot's shadow clone, and Sub-Zero's ice clones. Although, with Mortal Kombat X making tangible upgrades to the latter -- including the ability to toss ice clones -- these similarities are fleeting.

Cage's Stunt Double style also limits projectiles, as Polygon explain, "Instead of tossing two fireballs in two different arcs, a la Mortal Kombat 2, Stunt Double Cage can only throw them in a straight horizontal line, as in the original Mortal Kombat." Projectiles summed up IGN's breakdown of Shinnok in-game, "... he seemed to have [Shang Tsung]'s move-set, with fireballs that come up from the bottom of the screen." GamesRadar elaborate with "red lightning" and a returning old trick:

It's also interesting to note that, at one point during the fight, Shinnok busted out Johnny Cage's Shadow Kick. I was playing as Cage, but couldn't tell if Shinnok had performed a move that let him copy my Shadow Kick, or if he could just use the move innately because I was Cage. At any rate, it seems Shinnok has been all-but-confirmed to be playable, considering he was all anyone was talking about during the story, and I even saw him fighting during the game's attract mode.

No Special Effects: Johnny Cage performs his Shadow Kick on Scorpion.

If increasingly visceral fatalities haven't been a winner for you yet, more creative finishers may entice. If you haven't seen the "Here's Johnny!" fatality - you really need to watch the Cage Family Trailer right now! Polygon's McWhertor had the pleasure of watching Ermac's fatality over breakfast, sickened by the telekinetically achieved human ball of broken bones and its big finish of an oral extraction of entrails. [You can hear it in an official teaser.]

Concluding their in depth preview, Polygon also highlight the unlockable benefit of the recently announced Mortal Kombat X Mobile. Among the costumes on offer will be Jim Lee designed Injustice Scorpion, and curiously "something called a farmer Jax skin."

Mortal Kombat X: Official Cage Family Trailer
Here's Johnny! Meet the Cages in Gameplay & Story Mode Trailer!

It's official! Jonny Cage & Sonya Blade are back! Check out the whole brood as the Mortal Kombat X: Cage Family trailer shows off father, mother and daughter in devastating gameplay action!

You can't have a second generation without the first! The reveal of Mortal Kombat (2011) survivors Sonya Blade & Johnny Cage ends almost a year of speculation after the reveal of daughter Cassie (at E3 2014)! Cassie and the next generation were formally introduced in a recent Story Mode Trailer.

One of the MK2011 casualties can also be seen in the trailer: Jax battles Johnny in the Netherrealm -- still apparently suffering the effects of Quan Chi's control over his revenant form. Similar incarnations of Sindel and Kitana were also seen in the Story Trailer. Also in the trailer in Special Forces agent Kenshi - who was recently seen in MKX mobile screenshots.

Hollywood action hero Johnny Cage entered his first Mortal Kombat tournament for the publicity. Raiden observed that the arrogant, loquacious Cage, was 'a hero. .. though he may not yet know it.' Raiden was correct, of course: Johnny's martial arts skills were not special effects--and were pivotal in EarthRealm's victory.

Shang Tsung fulfilled Shao Kahn's order by fusing Tarkatan DNA with Kitana’s. The resulting hybrid Mileena is as bloodthirsty and vicious as a Tarkatan, but possesses the martial artistry and poise of an Edenian.

The dual being known as Ferra/Torr is mysterious even to their closest allies. It's rumored that Torr and Ferra were Outworld citizens, captured and permanently tethered to each other by the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung in the bowels of his Flesh Pits. They're more likely members of a forgotten symbiotic race, in which the 'rider' bonds with a 'mount.' The rider, Ferra, serves as the de facto brains of the duo, while the hulking Torr is the muscle. It's possible they communicate with each other telepathically, or that Ferra can actually understand Torr’s booming grunts. Found roaming the Tarkatan Wastes by Kotal Kahn’s troops, Ferra/Torr were pressed into service as the emperor’s personal bodyguards.

Kotal Khan was a young boy in the warrior realm of Osh-Tekk when it was merged with Outworld by Shao Kahn. He grew up admiring the Outworld emperor. But Kotal kept hidden from Shao Kahn a secret Osh-Tekk portal to EarthRealm. Kotal's 'magical' appearances and demonstrations of great power in EarthRealm led its inhabitants to declare him a god, whom they called Buluc. After Shao Kahn was killed in the war with EarthRealm, Kotal served Shao Kahn’s heir Mileena. But her instability eventually led Kotal to overthrow her and assume the emperorship.

In the video -- since removed for unknown reasons -- Urbano describes Cage's brutality as one of his favourites.

Returning fighter Kenshi was also confirmed for the console & PC versions, having already been revealed for MKX Mobile on the IGN App. IGN also picked up the Game Crate story.

Rumor Mill: Is This A Mortal Kombat X Animality Hint?
My goodness! My animality! Could this be the first look at a new fatality?

The rumor mill has been working overtime since NetherRealm Studios shared an image of Tyler Lansdown's visit to Nerdist. The Instagram image - featuring NetherRealm's bearded male Kombat Kast host, and someone who may or may not be Nerdist's Chris Hardwick - has drawn attention for the bloody polar bears appearing on a screen behind.

We can't rule out the possibility that the blood splattered, gore-faced polar bears are from a completely unrelated, incidental image. Given that they were there to play Mortal Kombat X, though, we also won't blame anyone leaping to the conclusion that this may be our first look at a Stage Fatality or even some form of Animality!

Brutality finishers made a formal return during the last Kombat Kast Stream - revised to force players to initiate their kombo while the match is still playing! Even so, stage fatalities and a new finisher have remained on the table since E3 2014. Faction Kills are a possible explanation for the unseen move [read more].

34.2% of fans felt we were onto something when Mortal Kombat Online featured a story on the concept of Stage Animalities. Could this be a hint? Register to share your thoughts or knowledge on the Mortal Kombat X forum!

MKX: Alleged Leak Include Jax, Sonya & Johnny Cage
Twitter User Fantim Claims Leak Access - Reveals Jax Artwork & More

Twitter follower Timo Frazier (@fantim) has sent forward claims of having access to new Mortal Kombat X preview material. The material released so far includes cut scene screenshots, concept art and production renderings. The legitimacy of the material could not be verified at the time of this reporting.

Jax features most heavily, revamped with a low key Special Forces jacket design and klassically inspired chrome cybernetic arms. One screenshot suggest a revenant alternate, similar to the Sindel & Kitana seen fighting in the recent Story Mode Trailer. Jax was one of several casualties at the conclusion of Mortal Kombat (2011), held under the control of Quan Chi.

MK originals Johnny Cage & Sonya Blade have been rumoured continuously throughout production. Cage joined Sonya in the pages of the DC Comics tie-in, seen in Chapter 9 previews. Rumored casting leaks from the live-action webseries suggest Cage leads a secret unit of the Special Forces [full story].

All three klassic characters have been long rumoured, despite siring a second generation of kombatants featured in the game. Cassie Cage was part of a launch unveiling during last year's E3, while Jacqui Briggs has appeared in tie-in comics before being featured in the story trailer.

Among Fantim's claims is also the inclusion of cult character Tremoras post-game downloadable content [Kombat Pass]. All claims are at this stage unsubstantiated.

IGN Feature Kenshi Mobile Screenshot On App
IGN Release First Screenshots of Kenshi in Mortal Kombat X Mobile!

The blind sword saint is back! IGN has featured the first screenshot of Kenshi, battling Kotal Kahn in the newly announced Mortal Kombat X mobile.

A thumbnail appeared as a story preview on the site, with the full screenshot appearing exclusively on the IGN mobile app. A fitting home for the mobile reveal of a new character. No word on Kenshi's status for consoles & PC. NetherRealm Studios' previous console counterpart mobile title Injustice: Gods Among Us did not feature exclusive characters until later in its lifespan.

The screenshot ends months of speculation about the character, who was last seen as a downloadable extra included in Mortal Kombat (2011). Rumors of a Mortal Kombat X return began in October, when Creative Director Ed Boon shared a photo from the motion capture studio. Further teases ensued, including fantasy film casting.

Kenshi was the first character to appear on the page in Mortal Kombat X - the brand's first comic book maxi-series in twenty years [preview]. The story revealed a new relationship between Kenshi and Scorpion, bridged by the introduction of his son (and Scorpion's new apprentice) - Takashi Takeda [full story]. Takeda quickly found himself confronted by a powerful demon -- potentially explaining Kenshi's Possessed Variation in the screenshot.

Takeda was introduced to the playable roster in the recent Story Mode Trailer. Is Kenshi soon to follow? Register to discuss who's next in the Mortal Kombat X forum! Special thanks to MK Online User JaymzHetfield for sharing images.

Mortal Kombat X: Mobile Edition Trailer
Mortal Kombat X Takes The Fight Anywhere with Mobile Announcement

In one of the most unexpected developments in the Mortal Kombat X cycle - NetherRealm Studios have announced a mobile version of the April console fighter!

NetherRealm Studios has been building its mobile cache since contributing to Arkham City: Lockdown in 2011. The studio developed a card trading game for Injustice: Gods Among Us and recently launched the massively successful WWE: Immortals.

Update: Available April, Mortal Kombat X will be a free-to-play fighting/card battle hybrid in the vein of Injustice Mobile for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch and Android users. Once the console and PC version of the game is out, players will be able to unlock content for mobile platforms (and vice versa) by playing both versions. A version of the persistent Faction War mode will also be present.

"NetherRealm Studios has created a Mortal Kombat X mobile experience that allows more players than ever before to play this over-the-top fighting game through their ever-present smartphones, tablets or other devices," said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “What’s more, we’ve expanded the unique cross-connectivity feature that links the mobile and console versions of Mortal Kombat X, delivering unique rewards to all players for simply playing the mobile game."

[Related Topic: Injustice Mobile Adding MKX Scorpion, Static & More]

The trailer features 2D klassic kombat heavily, noting milestones along the Mortal Kombat release timeline before settling on Mortal Kombat X. Could this suggest a special tie to the original titles, or the pre-reboot timeline? It's difficult to draw any conclusions at this early stage. Interesting to note that none of the 3D klassic titles are seen.

MKX: Tremor Fan Petition Reaches Milestone
Tremor Fan Petition Reaches 4000 Votes & Ed Boon Responds!

Update: Fans will be pleased to know Tremor will join the game as part of The Kombat Pack. The DLC fighter was revealed in a trailer along with Tanya in March, 2015.

The nebulous world of the fan petition is far from an exact science, often ranging from the absurd, to the unlikely. Change.org hosts the good and the bad indiscriminately, offering a free platform to collect e-signatures for just about anything. The distinction of supporters is dubious, but every now and then a petition garners so much interest it stands out from the crowd. Such is the case with Make Tremor A Playable Kombatant in Mortal Kombat X.

The petition has freshly counted more than 4,000 supporters, with more arriving each day. Even taking into account inflated numbers supplied by dummy posts and spoof votes, that's an impressive figure for a character whose existence dwells in spin-off obscurity, trivia, and fan-fiction.

Tremor first officially appeared in the ill fated 2000 third-person shooter: Mortal Kombat: Special Forces. He was given an unlikely reprieve in 2012 -- as featured by Mortal Kombat Online -- finding his way into PlayStation Vita versions of Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition.

Fans in the Twittersphere will have become aware of the campaign through the tireless dedication of @TremorBD and the FeelTheTremor hashtag. His efforts as petition founder supporter have also been shared by various NetherRealm Studios staff, including Executive Producer Shaun Himmerick, and beleaguered series co-creator/notorious Special Forces denier: Ed Boon.

So, why Tremor?... In their petition outline, [@mk10news & @mk102015] make the case, "Tremor would make a good addition to Mortal Kombat X's roster due to the fact he has a unique relationship with the Black Dragon and the Lin Kuei, the latter of which he was rumored to abandon, the first Lin Kuei ninja to do so and live."

As a burly bruiser with a ground pound special among his most prominent weapons, he made a convincing counterpart warrior for Jax, when finally appearing. Fan-fiction has expanded on Special Forces to reimagine him as an elementally based earth warrior -- a valid option to embellish an incomplete character visually, and functionally. The thought of a modern grappler in MK, also attractive. [See; Bane (Injustice)]

Popular Tremor Fan Design by Artist jaggudada.

When Mortal Kombat Online discussed the character with series co-creator John Tobias, he offered a tantalizing tease of what might have been, "I do remember having big plans for Tremor, but when I conceived him, he wasn't a member of the Black Dragon. He was a Lin Kuei hired as muscle by a mad man who was trying to open a gateway between Earth and Outworld."

What ever the outcome, it's clear fans are eager to see what the developer could do with these basic ideas. The characters of Special Forces may have been condemned to star in an unimpressive, troubled project, but their existence has helped flesh out the criminal underbelly of the Black Dragon clan, and added to the mystique of the sprawling fictional universe. With MKSF sub-bosses Jarek & Tasia showing up in the comics, and fan created costumes confirmed for DLC - now seems as good a time as any to make the leap!

Review: Mortal Kombat X #2 Chapter 6
Kotal Kahn's origins are revealed in a massive secret origin!

Note: The following review contains spoilers! If you haven't read digital Chapter 6 (or Mortal Kombat X #2 in print) you should visit DC Entertainment to purchase unread chapters for 99c each!

Mortal Kombat X: Blood Ties continues with a sharp turn away from the previous chapter's cliff hanger ending - toward a solo spotlight in a mini-story aptly titled "Kotal Kahn: Sekret Origin".

It's an incidental detail, but it's fun to see the comic book tradition of the "secret origin" incorporated into Mortal Kombat. Long time fans know the ties between MK and comics. It's a small acknowledgement of the fusion of cultures that is now stronger than ever. It's also a very effective way to get the root of one of the most interesting new characters introduced to Mortal Kombat in a very long time! Kotal is character we've been eager to learn more about since his E3 2014 unveiling, and abrupt introduction to the comics, in chains, during Chapter 4.

The epic backstory is condensed into a simple but effective episode. In many ways, it's reminiscent of the klassic video game character bios, spread out to show what it also tells.

It starts with the conquest of a golden realm called Osh-Tekk, many ages ago. Shao Kahn and the forces of Outworld [above] reintroduce its ruler Kotal K'etz to the forgotten concept of defeat.

We've always known Shao Kahn conquered and merged many realms into his empire of Outworld, so it's nice to go back to a time before the conflict with Earthrealm, to see another of the fallen cultures. A culture that, as it turns out, succumbed willingly after their bitter defeat. It was a gambit that allowed Kotal K'etz to retain his treasures - chief among them a "portal stone". This portal stone answers the question raised in the previous chapter: why is Kotal Kahn so casually visiting the Special Forces of Earthrealm? As it turns out, he has deep ties to our world through the use of this stone!

As it turns out, Kotal Kahn doesn't just resemble an Aztec deity - he is one! Much as we've learned Raiden is known by other names to other cultures (such as Haokah); Kotal Kahn is identified with the Aztec war god Buluc. He gained this mantle through an Osh-Tekk rite of passage called the "Realmwalk", which sent him into the harsh, warring world of Earthrealm. It's a familiar concept for strengthening a young warrior -- popularly identified with the Spartan agoge -- and a fine wrinkle to tie him to our world.

Where things start to break down a little is in the timeline. Sticklers for the original series fiction will remember Goro as the undefeated champion of Mortal Kombat for 500 years. As fate has it, Kotal Kahn arrives in The Amazon jungle at the same time as the Spanish conquistadors. This places the story around 1519 -- meaning the conquest of Osh-Tekk was close to Goro's first tournament win, possibly after (depending on the elastic determination of "the present"). We know Goro defeated Earthrealm's last great champion: The Great Kung Lao. The rules of the Elder Gods' tournament were in place for quite some time before Shao Kahn and Goro conquered the golden realm. Given the stretch of time between Mortal Kombat tournaments,

it's not unreasonable to think Outworld was monitoring other interests whilst pursuing Earthrealm through sporadic tournaments, but we've certainly never thought of it that way, and the conquest is not depicted with any sense of the Elder Gods' rules. If there's more story here, we welcome it. Perhaps the Osh-Tekk were forsaken by the Elder Gods, had no godly representation, or was a "realm" of Outworld in the traditional sense, rather than the otherworldly MK sense. After the 2011 reboot, we just hope it was thought about, rather than glossed over.

In any case - from the perspective of creating Kotal Kahn, the timing is obviously perfect. He's ingrained in the warring human culture his father forewarned. He participates in protecting his unidentified tribe -- possibly the famed inhabitants of Tenochtitlan -- fighting both rival tribes, and the Spanish invaders. This piece of history also provides a final flourish that fits the blood ties motif running throughout the series, although, timelines again become a little sketchy.

Kotal Kahn returns to Outworld when the Aztec enemies dwindle and he grows bored. While his realmwalk is complete, papa K'etz is unimpressed by his son's efforts. He sees a bigger picture. When Kotal rejects his father's doom saying, he discovers the Amazon tribe are dead. Killed by the ritual drinking of their enemies' blood, which was infected with unseen disease and pestilence. History fans know smallpox and typhus really did decimate the Aztec people. It's tough to line it up with Kotal Kahn reaching adulthood in The Amazon, but the warped history deserves a gimme.

While we might question attention to detail, the broad strokes here are excellent. Kotal Kahn has instantly become one of the great new Mortal Kombat characters - a warrior we hope can endure into future instalments. It's expected his ties to Earthrealm and Outworld will play well into the game and continuing story.

We presume the broad strokes have come from NetherRealm Studios, but as in previous chapters, Shawn Kittelsen has been at his best when writing these fertile, new characters. Artist Geraldo Borges lacks the slick inks and completed art of Dexter Soy, but his compositions serve the story well.

This chapter reads exceptionally as a stand-alone episode, but when packaged in print with the two previous chapters, it should compliment Kotal Kahn's first appearance, wrapping around to answer those questions we had regarding his entrance. The story is open to continue in a big way - too! In present day, Mileena has been deposed as Empress of Outworld, but we see Reiko and Goro working alongside her in the final pages! Excellent!

Mortal Kombat X is on sale now! Visit DC Entertainment to pick up all the digital chapters for 99c each! Bookmark the MKO Comics Directory for more previews, reviews and purchase links. Register to share your review and discuss other issues via the Media & Merchandise forum!
