Prima Games: No Official Strategy Guide for Mortal Kombat X
Prima Games Lose Rights to Official Mortal Kombat Strategy Guides

Prima Games have been a constant of the Mortal Kombat release cycle, printing official strategy guides from the misty days of the arcade, right through to the last game: Mortal Kombat (2011).

Sadly, the tradition of official printed strategy guides looks like it will break with the release of Mortal Kombat X. Prima Games has confirmed they do not have the rights to print a guide for the latest title, but "certainly would if we could."

Prima's 2011 strategy guide was marred by errors, but the publisher offered a make good to customers in the form of unique correction cards for each character -- themselves a collectible item.

Past Prima guides have included character bios, artwork and trivia, along with the usual content of combos, strategies and secret inputs. It's a double blow for collectors of printed material - some fans disappointed by Warner Brothers' decision to omit an Art Book from this game's Kollector's Editions.

Know Your Enemy: The Fighting Variations of Kitana
Learn more about the deadly MKX fighting variations of Kitana!

The fighting variations of Kitana were introduced January in a trailer reveal and further demonstrated during NetherRealm Studios' most recent KombatKast Live Stream. What are they all about, though? The developers break it down:

So far we've seen infographics for: D'Vorah, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kano, Quan Chi & Ferra/Torr. Each spotlight explains the basic unique strengths and weaknesses of the Character Variation system - an innovation that reinvents each fighter to create specialist match-ups between individual player styles. Visual tells make variation identification a snap as evidenced when all three are compared! Masked and unmasked variants give away Kitana's game quickly.

Royal Storm: In her Royal Storm Variation, Kitana deploys her regal status defensively. Kitana is able to utilize her Square Wave while airborne to escape dangerous situations and gains a tornado of energy that travels across the ground, allowing Kitana to lift and suspend her opponent from a greater distance.

Assassin: The Assassin Variation allows Kitana to tap into her training at Shao Kahn's hand, turning her into a vicious rushdown kombatant. Assassin Kitana gains a parry that triggers a series of brutal backstabs to the opponent and can sharpen her bladed fans to increase their damage. She is also able to utilize her training as an assassin to quickly cover distance and acrobatically attack her victim with her Assassin Rush.

Mournful: Mournful Kitana honors Jade, her fallen best friend, by wielding her weaponry. Employing the weapons of the deceased master assassin, Mournful Kitana can throw her glaive in multiple directions from the ground, or while airborne. She can guide her glaive while in flight to further confuse her opponent. Kitana also gains access to the extendable staff, allowing the use of klassic Jade special attacks.

Take in more Kitana with the visual spotlights of her official render and concept art gallery. See her in motion in her reveal trailer and intro dialogue opposite Cassie Cage. Or prepare to play with the first look at her Mezco Toys Action Figure!

Rubies Catalogue Teases Mortal Kombat X Sonya Costume
Rubies Costume Catalog includes Sonya Blade in 2015 MKX Line

Costume makers Rubies have released their mammoth 2015 Licensed Catalog, including a section dedicated to coming designs based on Mortal Kombat X. Along with previews of evergreen mascots Sub-Zero & Scorpion - the catalog teases an unrevealed Sonya Blade costume!

Still offered in the catalog is a range of costume attire, masks and accessories inspired by Mortal Kombat (2011). They include deluxe latex masks based on Reptile, Baraka & Shao Kahn!

Male Mortal Kombat X costumes come with mask, tabard, belt and gauntlets in a range of sizes. The Sonya costume is comprised of shirt with vest attached, pants, belt, gauntlet and hat.

Sonya has not yet been confirmed as a playable character in the game, but the design description matches her recent appearance in the Mortal Kombat X comic series. Set between the events of MK2011 and MKX, the comic bridges the story between games. A character believed to either be daughter Cassie Cage or Sonya was seen wearing a beret in the recent Mortal Kombat X: Next Trailer promoting the persistent Faction War mode.

Todd McFarlane Agrees To Spawn Guest Fighter in MKX
McFarlane Claims An Open Agreement With WB For Mortal Kombat X Guest

He's battled his way through demons, cyborgs and Namco's Soulcalibur II. Could the comic book anti-hero Spawn be eyeing up the warriors of Mortal Kombat X next? Creator Todd McFarlane says it's an open possibility in a Toy Fair interview with GamerFitNation.

"We've actually had a short deal with them, so they may put [Spawn] in there..."

The multimedia savvy toymaker and part-time comics artist threw Spawn's spikey gauntlet into the ring this time last year. Where an Injustice guest spot seemed unlikely, this time McFarlane says an outstanding agreement with Warner Bros. is already in place:

"That means that they have access to be able to use the character in a couple of their games if they want to. Again, it's up to their discretion. So, uh... I gave them a window of time. And, so, I'll just leave it to them to be able to do what it is that they want. So, eventually they'll phone me and say 'Hey. We want to use him here. Is that okay?' Well, technically it's okay because we've already said yes."

The Spawn creator also explains he's looking for ways to relaunch the character before expanding back into video games and other merchandising. Based on the interview, no call has been made by WB or MKX with just two months to go, but with an alleged open licensing agreement and 2 guest characters confirmed for post-game DLC, it may also be unnecessary.

Mezco Preview Expanded Mortal Kombat X Line at Toy Fair
Mezco Massively Expand Mortal Kombat X Line at Toy Fair!

Mezco Toyz impressed in New York late last year with the unveiling of their new Mortal Kombat X action figures [full story]. The toymaker shined, showing exactly what they could bring to a new era of MK collectibles. They were back in NYC this weekend for Toy Fair, where Figures.com reported a massively expanded line.

Joining perennial favorites Scorpion, Sub-Zero & Raiden in the standard 6" line are a second wave of confirmed characters: Kotal Kahn, Quan Chi & Kitana! Like the figures before them, each preview shows off a greater level of detail than previous series - right down to the ornate carvings of Kitana's jewellery and Quan Chi's chest skull!

Note: The original trio of Scorpion, Sub-Zero & Raiden will now also make-up a scaled down series of 4" action figures baring similar sculpts at a reduced size. September 2015 will also see the arrival of 12" super-sized Scorpion & Sub-Zero dolls. Mezco reportedly aim to fill each variant line with the full Mortal Kombat X roster.

Expanding the line into even further realms are a series of super-deformed variations on Scorpion & Sub-Zero. Bobbleheads bring the highly detailed MKX designs to life with a wink and literal nod. Simplified versions coming in plush and Mini Mez-Itz formats - the latter standing just 2" high!

Review: Mortal Kombat X #2 Chapter 5
Cassie Cage & Jacqui Briggs are on the run from the Black Dragon!

Mortal Kombat Online's review cycle is drifting back from the current digital release schedule, but be warned: the following article will contain spoilers! Visit DC Entertainment to purchase Chapter 5 before continuing!

Mortal Kombat X: Blood Ties continues with Part 2 of the digitally divided "Caged" story. Note: This 2-part story will appear in its entirety in print editions of Mortal Kombat X #2.

Per the trifurcated nature of the digital series, this instalment picks up pretty much where Chapter 4 left off. In doing so, it quickly answers some of the structural questions raised by the last chapter, but does so again suffering for the limited space afforded by digital chapters. Fortunately, Chapter 5 starts to create the sense of story momentum, making it clear these aren't strictly disparate tales that will come together in crescendo at the end. For all the set-up, Raiden appears to be emerging as the through line fans have seen in previous incarnations.

The real meat of the chapter is Cassie Cage's continuing misadventures in the world of underground cage fighting. Last chapter ended with a Frost deathmatch bombshell, and that's picked up and concluded in Chapter 5.

Dexter Soy is really on point with the fighting that ensues and his energetic layouts. As observed previously, Shawn Kittelsen seems to be doing his best work when dealing with the introduction of new characters. These two chapters really tell us a lot about Cassie Cage, who emerges as an individual, as much as a product of her two iconic parents. This character is loud and obnoxious, but when it comes to the crunch, she's tough, gritty and a good soul. The challenge will be for the character in the games to live up to these expectations.

Surpassing all expectations is Frost - who will not yet be joining the dead pool!

An underground deathmatch involving a third-tier ice wielder seemed like a shoo-in for a cheap fatality -- especially when we're not even sure which Sub-Zero is making the cut -- but hope springs eternal as Cassie not only spares her opponent - but helps her out of another deadly encounter! The threat storming the MMA arena? Jarek & Tasia of the Black Dragon Clan!

Last year, a couple of folks took offense to MK Online's cheeky (and still infamous) Special Forces April Fools gag [full story]. Opportunity played a part in the choice, but the fact is, we went with MKSF because it's always been an under valued, valid piece of the canon!

The oddball MKSF villains who fleshed out the Black Dragon's supposedly international criminal organization have been waiting for a serial situation to finally make them work. The characters who came before them all had opportunities to be properly revamped in subsequent outings. This is a nice start for a couple of the easier options!

We're a little disappointed Jarek has his slightly baffling, bulky chested Armageddon design. Something closer to MK4, or completely new, might have been appreciated. The chances of Jarek & Tasia flip jumping their way back into the core games' spotlight is pretty slim, so there's not much use complaining. It reads like a cameo for cameo's sake, but here's hoping the Black Dragon get a chance to develop in hypothetical future appearances.

The chapter ends with Cassie Cage snapping smart phone selfies while running from her and Jacqui Briggs's pursuers. It's a pretty brilliant 'bread crumb' device that makes good use of Cassie's overtly millennial status. Momma Sonya Blade discovers the phone after Cassie & Jacqui are abducted in a portal. It looks like the Black Dragon are working for Kotal Kahn - as evidenced by another voiceless single panel appearance by the elusive Erron Black.

It turns out Kotal Kahn has himself a nifty portal stone, which he's clearly using to hop from place to place with relative ease. Does Erron Black have Black Dragon ties? Is he an Earthrealm gunslinger, or a survivor of a realm where the wild west is alive and well? Questions we will continue ponder as we count down to the April 14th release of the new game.

Kommunity: Fans Rally For Mortal Kombat X Kollector's Art Book
Fans Disappointed by Absence of Art Book in Mortal Kombat X Kollectors Edition

When Warner Bros. revealed their Mortal Kombat: Kollector's Edition back in 2011 - it was a revelation. Stuffed with extras; the various packaged specials helped make Mortal Kombat the highest selling installment in franchise history!

Fans clearly remember it fondly.

With the announcement of Mortal Kombat X: Kollector's Edition - one key omission from the extras line-up has sparked a groundswell for change from within the fan kommunity - and beyond it.

Mortal Kombat Online has learned from reliable sources that various project artists were disappointed their work would not be immortalized in print for the current project. This echoes a chorus of cries from vocal fans - eager to hold a physical record beyond in-game and online images.

When asked by a fan about prospects of a book, long time Moral Kombat Designer John Vogel noted: "... it would be a shame if there wasn't one".

The Art of Mortal Kombat collector's book set a simple but effective benchmark, taking players deep inside the creative process by showcasing the work of various NetherRealm Studios conceptual artists.

Across the many fighting games - Mortal Kombat has demanded some of the most aggressive design revamps of any series. Despite the iconic status of many of its characters, few remain visually similar, undergoing sometimes radical aesthetic changes from game to game. This adds even greater value to the visual record published in art book form, capturing a snapshot in the evolution of the various fighters. It's a quality many fans of the series respond to - and something Mortal Kombat Online can also get behind.

As the Outworld civil war reaches its breaking point, Emperor Kotal Kahn sends his most trusted warriors to take down the would-be Empress Mileena. But what happens when a surprise kombatant joins the fight? Enter GORO, the Shokan prince!

The Emperor means business in Chapter 7, summoning his father Kotal K'Etz to personally enter the fray in possession of the Wrath Hammer of Shao Kahn! The true threat isn't would-be Empress Mileena - but rather the cunning warlord general Reiko who has allied himself with Kahn's adopted daughter in the wake of the Emperor's demise! As the charismatic Kotal notes, history is written in blood, but before the day is done he may come to regret sending his kin.

Also this issue: Prince Goro marches into kombat on behalf of Mileena, but it sounds as if the Shokan warrior may be missing in action very shortly. The pre-order warrior won't be gone for too long. As the trailers promise - Goro Lives, and will be playable from April 14th!

Mortal Kombat X Reptile Concept Art Gallery
Reptile concept art gallery as featured on Kombat Kast!

During the latest Kombat Kast live stream, NetherRealm Studios showed off a gallery of concept arts. Here are some of the designs for Reptile [click to enlarge]:

We looked forward to designing Reptile. With all the possible reptilian elements the character could possess, it gave us a huge amount of ideas to explore.

We began pursuing a more primal-influenced look, featuring bones as a main element of the look. His vicious nature makes this pairing feel right.

Over the years, Reptile has undergone some pretty radical changes. The finished primary look for MKX surprised with its relative familiarity. In the images above, you'll see some more varied designs for one of MK's original palette swaps. Look even closer, and you might even recognize some work in the style of MKOmmunity users like EmperorKahn!

Mortal Kombat X Kitana Concept Art Gallery
Kitana Concept Art from Mortal Kombat X

During the latest Kombat Kast live stream, NetherRealm Studios showed off a gallery of concept arts. Here are some of the designs for Kitana [click to enlarge]:

Kitana is a signature member of the Mortal Kombat roster, so we wanted to come up with something exciting and fresh for her look in Mortal Kombat X.

Past incarnations have tended to favor the royal qualities of the character over the warrior aspects, so we decided to reverse that for her costume. She has a stealthier, more ninja inspired design with blue as an accent color against the black parts of her costume.

Apparently past designs have focused on Kitana's "royal qualities". That's certainly an interesting way of putting it. We might argue that's what's been missing from Kitana's usually pared down designs, especially in the last few games.

Executive Producer Shaun Himmerick recently confirmed a plethora of opportunities for additional DLC skins for Mortal Kombat X. Could one of these be Kitana's? Register to share your favorites on the forum!

Shaun Himmerick Mortal Kombat X Twitter Q&A - DLC, Skins, More
Executive Producer Shaun Himmerick Spilled the Beans on DLC and more!

Mortal Kombat X Executive Producer Shaun Himmerick (@lover_of_tacos) has been fielding questions from fans via social media micro blogging site Twitter. The result is a raft of new details about the April 14 release, including character "unreveals" and DLC specifics.

Another 2nd Generation Fighter Coming
From the outset, Mortal Kombat X has touted the potential for two generations of kombatants to do battle across a 25 year timespan. So far, that distinction has belonged to Cassie Cage, but Himmerick promises at least one more "son or daughter" will make it to the final roster.

The tie-in comic books have already thrown up two convincing next gen candidates: Takeda - Scorpion's apprentice and son of Kenshi, and Jacqui Briggs - kickboxing junior Olympian and daughter to Jax. There's no reason to think both can't find their way into the final playable roster, but equally there's no guarantee it's either of them.

Goro Lives Day 1 & Beyond
There will be no escaping Goro come April 14th! The executive producer confirmed Goro will be playable from Day 1 and fully available for on and offline modes.

While Goro is being touted as a pre-order bonus for all versions (including digital) -- the four-armed Shokan will also be available to players beyond the incentive period. Furthermore, Himmerick confirms Goro is not part of The Kombat Pass.

More info on Goro and his kin below. Read on!

The Kombat Pass
Fans who've pre-ordered Mortal Kombat X Kollector's Editions know to expect The Kombat Pass among their swag of bonuses.

As widely speculated, this functions similarly to previous NetherRealm Season Passes - guaranteeing the player 4 additional characters post-release and 15 character skins.

This time around, two of those downloadable characters will be "iconic" guest fighters. Ed Boon has been teasing a reprieve for 2011 near-miss Sweet Tooth, raising fresh questions about console exclusives in the process. Boon told IGN there was a chance for more than one console exclusive fighter, last August..

God of War mascot Kratos appeared as a PlayStation exclusive in Mortal Kombat (2011), later joined by Season Pass download and Nightmare on Elm Street slasher: Freddy Krueger. NetherRealm's 2013 DC Comics fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us included a soft crossover appearance by Scorpion. As in those previous examples, guest characters may not feature alternate costumes.

Alternate Skin Downloads Begin at Launch
While guest characters won't necessarily have their own alternate costumes, there will be plenty of new skins to download - three at a time, in fact!

Himmerick acknowledges the first pack of skins will come on launch, with subsequent skin packs arriving in conjunction with Kombat Pass characters. The packs will also be available for purchase, offering a wide array of inspirations, from klassic designs to more unusual sources - like the "Cold War" Scorpion skin advertised for some versions of the Kollector's Edition. Kollector's Edition bonuses - such as the Coarse designed "Gold" Scorpion - will also become available at a later date.

As has become a NetherRealm Studios tradition - compatibility patches will also provide players with free character skins! You really won't have any shortage of options for a night out kicking arse!

Characters Won't Wear Others' Skins
There may be an abundance of character skins to swap out, but Mortal Kombat X won't be a Buffalo Bills' dream! With a lot of fan theories revolving around presumed character redundancies, the thought of including omitted characters as skins has been floated a lot. Himmerick didn't rule the possibility out completely, but did note a "big deal" character like Kintaro would not be considered for a Goro skin.

While Injustice: Gods Among Us did eventually use skins to create new characters [eg; Professor Zoom, John Stewart] -- it also demonstrated NetherRealm's keen ability to craft unique play styles for similar characters. A feat they should be capable of bringing to MKX, should circumstances require.

Even so, Mortal Kombat X will have more skins than Mortal Kombat (2011) and a few less than Injustice. As already recapped, that's still a whole lot of skins - more than enough to get Reptile through puberty and beyond! [Lizard joke!]

Another Character Reveal in February
According to Himmerick, NetherRealm Studios will be squeezing the month of February for all its worth. At least one more character should be revealed before the end of the month! Likewise - we can expect more information about the mysterious story line that takes the series across twenty-five years.

Invitation Only - The Deadpool Updated
In a blatant act of gimmick infringement, Executive Producer Shaun Himmerick has horned in on the Ed Boon Who's Next? Character Deadpool striking no less than four fighters definitively off the record! Click the link to find the full list of doomed souls.

Other Stuff We Already Knew
Sadly, not every website ore random dude on Twitter (or YouTube) is created equal. With more uncredited sources than ever before - a lot of disinformation and doubt seeps into the kommunity. Himmerick was happy to set a few folks straight, reiterating details that have been lost in the shuffle since E3, or that we'd already assumed.

Among the key points:
- Character select screens seen in demos aren't final.
- Players won't need PlayStation Plus to play Faction Wars etc.
- CPU characters will sometimes wear alternate costumes.
- No DC Universe guest characters [full story].
= Single Fight mode returning.

MKX: Behind the Scenes of Cassie Cage Brazilian Localization
Rockstar voice actor Pitty goes behind-the-scenes and hints at Jax & Sonya.

As we saw with the announcement of the newest game - Mortal Kombat is a global phenomenon! Delivering the series to the world takes a lot of work, and musician Pitty has taken fans behind the scenes of the localization process for Mortal Kombat X. Assista e descubra:

Pitty is a Brazilian rock singer bringing the voice of Cassie Cage to life for the Brazilian Portuguese dub. Pitty speaks glowingly of the trash talking combatant and the strength of the female fighters.

Even more enticing are dialogue references to "Uncle" Jax and Cassie's mother Sonya Blade. Speculation for both klassic characters' inclusion has been running hot since the Mortal Kombat X: Next trailer offered some tantalizing visual clues. Cassie's dialogue seems to suggest story mode scenes that put the fighters in peril. One translation: "Are you okay, Uncle Jax?"

Backstory Notes & Spoilers from Mortal Kombat X #2
The Netherrealm War detailed in DC Comics recap page.

Digital readers of the Mortal Kombat X comic book will have been within their rights to have many questions regarding details glanced since Chapter One. Designed to tell the story between Mortal Kombat (2011) to the April 14 release - many key points have remained unelaborated upon, left to vague references.

MK Online Kommunity User Shadaloo has shared a recap page found in print versions of Mortal Kombat X #2, which details some of the missing the pieces. The following transcript contains SPOILERS. Read on at your own risk.

Even after defeating the evil Shao Kahn, humanity was not safe.

A fallen Elder God named Shinnok rose to lead the undead armies of Netherrealm against us in a war that nearly destroyed Earthrealm. Nearly.

Against all odds, Raiden and his champions prevailed. Shinnok was imprisoned and his undead army was driven back to Netherrealm - except for a fortunate few, miraculously restored to life, and granted the opportunity to set things right...

Previously in Mortal Kombat X:

Given a second chance at life, Hanzo Hasashi aka "Scorpion" reformed the Shirai Ryu clan and took in Takeda, son of the swordsman Kenshi, as his latest apprentice. But after a demon posessed one of Hanzo's students via an ancient dagger and massacred the rest of his clan, Scorpion vowed to finish the being who had originally given him the dagger - Raiden!

Meanwhile...

After Emperor Shao Kahn's death, his sole heir Mileena claimed the throne of Outworld. As the war between Earthrealm and Netherrealm threatened to spread to Outworld, Empress Mileena refused to coordinate a defense effort, ignoring the pleas of her War Chief, Kotal. Finally, after a great battle, Mileena was overthrown. Those who sided with the would-be Empress became enemies of the new Emperor, now calling himself Kotal Kahn.

And thus the Outworld Civil War began...

Cast list:

Hanzo Hasashi AKA Scorpion: Grandmaster of the Shirai Ryu. Former Netherrealm agent.
Kenshi: Special Forces agent. Absentee father.
Raiden: God of Thunder. Protector of Earthrealm.
Sonya Blade: Commander of Earthrealm Strategic Defense.
Jacqui Briggs; Daughter of Jackson "Jax" Briggs.
Cassie Cage: Daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade.
Erron Black: A mysterious mercenary living in Outworld.
D'Vorah: First minister to Kotal Kahn.
Kotal Kahn: Emperor of Outworld. Osh-Tekk warrior.

It remains unknown if details of the Netherrealm war -- an apparent reference to the plot originally told in Mortal Kombat 4 (prior to the 2011 reboot) -- will be featured in Mortal Kombat X's story mode.

After last issue’s shocking conclusion, Sub-Zero reflects on the path that brought him face-to-face with Scorpion. Meanwhile, Reptile, Kotal Kahn and D’Vorah must stand their ground against the onslaught of King Gorbak and his Shokan army! The game will be available April 14, 2015.

The issue reportedly builds off a showdown between klassic mascot rivals Scorpion & Sub-Zero - while also continuing the Outworld war between Kotal Kahn and his merry band of misfits, and Mileena's army of Shokan allies! Team Kotal consists of D'Vorah, Reptile & Ferra/Torr -- all apparent survivors of conquered realms. No signs of the mysterious Erron Black.

The influence of King Gorbak -- father of Goro -- doesn't sound like good news for the prince, either, but fret not! As trailers for the pre-order bonus character have told us - Goro Lives! The comic provides backstory for the video game, coming April 14th [read more].

Super Bowl Runner-Up Welcomes Baby Rayden Into World
Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman fathers baby Rayden.

The Seattle Seahawks may have come up short earlier in February at Super Bowl XLIX, but controversial cornerback Richard Sherman found personal victory with the birth of his first child, last week.

Born February 5th to mother Ashley Moss, the child of a football star wouldn't ordinarily be big MK news -- but ESPN report the baby's name is Rayden!

Not surprisingly, the news has many outlets speculating a Mortal Kombat connection. Better known as Raiden in the original games - the thunder god appeared frequently in multimedia with the modified "Rayden" moniker, including movies, television, and even ported versions of the games.

Sherman wouldn't be the first to draw inspiration from the popular fighting game series! MK Online staffer paid loose homage to Jax when naming his son, Jackson.

Congratulations to the new parents! Watch Sherman's teammate Marshawn "Beast Mode" Lynch enter the Mortal Kombat arena to take on Patriots' Rob Gronkowski in Conan's Clueless Gamer!

Official Mortal Kombat X Screenshots - Destroyed City Stage
Ermac & Raiden do battle in the Destroyed City!

NetherRealm Studios have sent us two new official screenshots from Mortal Kombat X. They feature returning warriors Ermac & Raiden doing battle in the Destroyed City stage, and newcomers Ferra/Torr on the all new Living Tower. Click to enlarge:

We got a glimpse of the Destroyed City in a previous screenshot and the corresponding Kitana & Kung Lao Trailer. A suitably apocalyptic scene for some time in the 25 years of Mortal Komabt X's future.

We learned more about The Living Tower and the other adaptive online modes in the recent Mortal Kombat X: Next trailer. The Living Tower suggests more kombatants and kameos, with IGN reporting references to Cyrax and Rain in a recent preview [full story].

MKX Character Dialogues - Cassie Cage vs Kitana
Cassie Cage & Kitana face-off in an all-girl MKX character dialogue preview!

Later this week Kitana will face-off against Reptile in the next live stream Kombat Kast from NetherRealm Studios. Before the demo shows off the character's fighting variations, the developer is letting her do the talking against Cassie Cage in the latest pre-fight dialogue clip. Check it out:

Cassie Cage: Princess.
Kitana: Your very presence mocks me!
Cassie Cage: Sorry. Did you just say 'kick my ass'?

Cassie Cage carries the comedic torch into the next generation, providing irreverent relief for the self-serious warrior princess: Kitana. No surprise. We've heard it all before, previously previewed in Kotal Kahn v Cassie Cage.

Kitana appears unmasked in what is likely a visual cue for one of her Character Variations. One of which - according to IGN - reflects a state of mourning for fellow combatant Jade. Does Jade's passing have something to do with the offense taken to Cassie's presence? It's difficult to tell if this is just verbal tit-for-tat, or if there's something to be read into.

MKX: IGN Living Tower Preview Theories - Cyrax, Rain, Jade
IGN Speculate About Mortal Kombat X Living Tower

IGN are getting into the spirit of speculation following a special preview of Mortal Kombat X. The Next Trailer finally offered everyone a full preview of dynamic online features coming in 2015: Faction War and Living Tower sparking a firestorm of character spotting and fan curiosity! With hands-on experience, IGN report chances for two more fan-favourite characters: Cyrax & Rain:

In the newly announced Living Towers mode, which adds unique gameplay modifiers to standard matches, both Cyrax and Rain had mods named after them. More significantly, these mods involved fully modeled graphical assets related to each of them: Cyrax's trademark bombs, and Rain's water-bubble attack.

Alas; things aren't nearly so positive for Jade. The green clad Edenian assassin is represented by Kitana in a Variation style called Mournful. IGN note, "it specifically mentions that in this style, Kitana uses both the staff and glaive belonging to Jade, a fellow former assassin, and long-time friend."

Do Cyrax & Rain have a shot - or is it all just part of the game? Register to share your thoughts on the Mortal Kombat X forum!

Who's Next? Official Ermac Mortal Kombat X Trailer
Ermac battles Sub-Zero in a bone crushing Mortal Kombat X trailer!

If you were watching the NetherRealm Studios Stream Reveal, you witnessed the unveiling of Ermac live. For those who didn't - the official trailer shows off a whole new bag of tricks for MK's resident soul man!

It isn't just Ermac's design that's changed! The soul warrior is taking the to skies, carrying over some of NetherRealm's work from Injustice: Gods Among Us to get more aerial in his offense!

Sub-Zero bears the brunt of Ermac's bone crushing 3-stage diving X-Ray - and the telekinetic cube compact Fatality is apparently too gruesome to show! If you want to fill in the blanks, you can use your imagination with an audio teaser.

Mortal Kombat X is coming April 14th to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 & PC! You can now pre-order the Kollector's Edition to score a variety of bonus content! Discuss these topics and more on the Mortal Kombat X forum.

Reintroducing Ermac - Official Mortal Kombat X Render
Ermac returns with a brand new look in Mortal Kombat X!

From humble hoax beginnings to cult and fan-favourite status: Ermac has become a much loved regular in the MK mythologies. The creature of souls returns in Mortal Kombat X with a new look. Take a closer look:

Click Image to Enlarge in New Window

Ermac's new look draws inspiration from a variety of sources, featuring familiar elements from the last generation. Many of the characters feature klassically inspired designs, but Ermac and Reptile may be the most literal visual continuations - somewhat unusual, for this series.

Ermac's appearance echoes his Mortal Kombat (2011) jacketed alternate costume [see more], with an interlocking belt design first seen in Deception. Next generation textures bring to life a rich leather look - distinct from the red fabrics that popped in previous incarnations.

Ermac has kept himself literally enshrouded in mystery for quite some time, hiding his face beneath black wraps and masks. For the first time the bandages are pulled back to reveal a decaying face right out of The Mummy's Tomb. Web vein gloves defy explanation, but with green soul energy, maintain the recognized trademarks of the character. Could they suggest one of the souls Ermac has absorbed? They don't look like Shao Kahn's gloves, but perhaps another past warrior?

Ermac is many - and you can be too! Register to follow and discuss all the news on the Mortal Kombat X kommunity forum! Like and share stories via @MK_Online, Facebook & YouTube!

Reintroducing Reptile - Official Mortal Kombat X Render
Reptile returns in Mortal Kombat X character wallpaper!

It was a big double reveal last week as Mortal Kombat X welcomed back two klassic kombatants! Not to be overshadowed by a subsequent spotlight - Reptile returned in an exciting gameplay reveal trailer. Take a closer look at the Reptile's new skin:

Click Image to Enlarge in New Window

Many returning characters have seen klassic influences embedded within their designs, but the through line from Reptile's last appearance, to now, is one of its most surprising qualities.

The new design addresses some of the weaker elements of the 2011 look. A heftier, armored face mask eliminates the store bought quality of the 2011 cowl and mask combo - even while retaining the (literal) connection. between each headpiece Though still connected, their shape is much less round than the previous incarnation, taking away the slightly comic, cutesy nature of the last design.

Reptile's chin can clearly be seen protruding from the bottom of the new metallic mask. It hinges horizontally to allow for an acid spew without the fuss of exposing his face. It's an interesting idea that almost reminds us of the strange, muzzle-like adaptation of ninja masks use in Mortal Kombat 4.

Mortal Kombat X: Next Generation Trailer
Preview Faction Wars & The Living Tower in new MKX trailer!

Mortal Kombat X introduces a new generation of fighters, story and experience when it arrives for home consoles, April 14! Players will enter the battle with a whole new array of characters and modes to choose from - as previewed in this exciting new trailer!

Online modes are more alive and interactive than ever before! Faction War is the much discussed persistent online mode that pits players from around the globe against one another in weekly wars! Fans can choose to represent one of five well known clans: White Lotus, Lin Kuei, Special Forces, Black Dragon & Brotherhood of Shadows. Completing tasks accumulates points for each team in pursuit of victory, and unlocks new bonuses.

A massively revamped challenge system also includes The Living Tower -- an adaptive, updating tower of tasks that will challenge players in ever evolving, interesting ways. There are also a variety of traditional goals to help you sharpen your skills.

The trailer includes a reference to brutalities - quite possibly the touted returning -ality. Are there glimpses of Sonya Blade in the faction war mode? Is that Jax and a mystery warrior on the Living Tower?

Review: Mortal Kombat X #2 Chapter 4
Cassie Cage & Kotal Kahn shine in Mortal Kombat X second issue start!

The review cycle has drifted back from the current digital releases, but be warned: the following article contains spoilers!

Mortal Kombat X: Blood Ties continues with Chapter 4 - the first section of print issue #2, and Part 1 of digital story arc "Caged". Make sure you follow links to buy the chapter from DC Entertainment before you continue!

Continuation is a topic very much in mind at the open of Chapter 4. If you read Chapter 3 [review], you know Raiden is dabbling in dangerous Kamidogu blood magik. If you know that, the reminder at the start of this chapter will probably seem continually ominous, but fairly unnecessary. We've spent a lot of time navel gazing over the virtues and foibles of digital versus print - this little curio makes you wonder how it'll read once collected for trade.

It's a lot of fun to see Fujin in action - even if it's just taking a gut wound from a protector god with a pretty sketchy record since the 2011 story reboot. The take away from this B-plot overlap is that big things are coming, but the real meat of this issue delivers us to two of the debuting Mortal Kombat X characters: Cassie Cage and Kotal Kahn.

A surprise already explored extensively by fandom [since the preview] is the introduction of another second generation fighter! Jacqui is a none too subtle allusion to Jax -- the Outerworld Investigation Agency partner of Cassie's mom: Sonya Blade.

Jacqui definitely doesn't shine as much as the already confirmed playable character [Cassie], but conditioned expectation, and her status as a "Junior Olympic" kickboxer inevitably raises tie-in questions. During the fight that introduces her, she's made to appear far more mortal than the average playable character. It's tough to say if unflattering comparisons to her cybernetically enhanced father are setting the pace for expectation, or foreshadowing robo-legs. If we get a fast moving kickboxer in the game, either would be fine.

Cassie wins with inspiration from her father's trademark Shadow Kick and the aftermath opens the door to exploring her better known parents. Note an obligatory "Ninja Mime" reference, nodding to Cage's body of work, and a broken razzy stand-in, reminding us that the days of cheering for Hollywood action movie stars are well behind us. Bummer.

As known at the end of MK2011, Johnny Cage & Sonya Blade survived Shao Kahn's invasion plot. The experience may have brought them close enough together to conceive a child, but any warm and fuzzy feelings aren't here. The parents are split. Cage is living it up in Venice, California. Sonya Blade is still living the military life - and keeping some surprising company!

We've known details about Kotal Kahn for quite some time. At some point he will have claimed the throne of Outworld, he will lose it, he includes D'Vorah among his allies, and he considers his goals somewhat virtuous. That's all here on first appearance - but if you thought you knew the Incan inspired fighter, you might be surprised.

A casual visit to Earthrealm to plead for clemency in his war to own Outworld did not rank high on our list of expectations. Never the less, Kotal Kahn is the willingly chained visitor of Sonya and the Special Forces, flanked by D'Vorah and another new character: Erron Black. Like "Jacqui", Erron Black has sparked rampant speculation, despite saying and doing almost nothing in his brief appearance. A testament to the appeal of an archetypal Man With No Name gunslinger, perhaps? [Don't call him Erron Blackmo].

Despite a peaceful introduction, this scene, like most so far, leads to a breakout of violence. The X-Ray gimmick of the games is incorporated. It's been used several times already, and it's an interesting if superfluous device. Just as in the games, there are no discernible consequences for the bone shattering violence, and in a sequential story driven medium, that's less forgivable than a game mechanic.

Like the situation itself, Kotal Kahn's delivery subverts expectation. There's something a little bit off about a character like this borrowing casual phrases. It might have been more natural to simply speak with intent when saying "desperate times call for desperate measures", rather than calling attention to it as terran. He's written a little too pedestrian to live up to the stature of the design and art, but some of that is owed to circumstances.

This is, never the less, perhaps the most intriguing plot line introduced so far, for a character who shows early signs of being an addition who can having staying power, if results allow. So far Kahn's primary rival is Mileena - a logical heir to Shao Kahn's throne who has apparently been warring with Kotal for 10 years. We saw the teaser last issue that paired her with Reiko - an embellishment with a lot of potential! Apparently she's orchestrated a deal with the Red Dragon - a callback to Chapter 1 that should bring a lot of things together.

The chapter's underground MMA cage match - as announced in solicitations - finishes the chapter big!

Frost makes a final page appearance that packs a surprising punch for a now relatively obscure character. When introduced in Deadly Alliance, she was a star recruit for Sub-Zero's new Lin Kuei. We knew her as a rambunctious pupil with one or two delusions of grandeur, and a need for training. It feels a little odd for the amateur ice wielder to be thought of as refining her skills in an MMA cage - even before finding the LIn Kuei - but it's not out of the question.

Many great fighting game characters are bolstered by having good rivals and nemesis - and utilizing Frost to boost Cassie is a nice idea. Sadly, with a death match stipulation and Hsu Hao as precedent, we have to assume the fixation with fatalities has Frost on the chopping block. Given the scene, it might have been a better place to embellish street brawl Kobra, but we're getting ahead of ourselves.

At twenty-odd digital pages (potentially half in print) - this is a very satisfying read. Kittelsen seems to be getting the most out of his work when he's writing the newer characters. Is this because we have less established expectations, or is there greater freedom to create these new characters on the page? Whatever the case, Cassie & Kotal are stand-outs.

In past reviews, we haven't said enough about Dexter Soy (art) and Veronica Gandini (colors). In the print world, colorists have recently joined the front page credits and Gandini is the perfect case for why. Solid colors do the world of good, making MKX look clean, glossy and modern. I hope we get a lot more from them as a team, but I have to think this proving ground will seem them elevated to bigger titles on the DC Comics slate.

Retronauts Podcast - When Mortal Kombat Jumped The Shark
Did Mortal Kombat Jump The Shark? Retronauts Investigate.

Animality!Cinema's fractured white knight Harvey Dent warned, "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain." It's the perilous reality every long running video game franchise faces, sooner or later. Some series rise to the challenge, enjoying the vigour of reinvention. Others smash face-first into the pounding surf as they descend steeply from their wayward trip across the proverbial shark's back.

This week on Retronauts, the evergreen podcast tackled the subject of When Games Jump The Shark. You'll be shocked and appalled to hear Mortal Kombat among the list - but the Retronauts are taking the good with the bad.

US Gamer's Kat Bailey submits the series for grilling [00:34:38], targeting its first adventure spin-off: Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. The topic sparks a debate about the series' lowest moment, with the excesses of its final digitized instalments battling for dishonors. Fret not - as the Retronauts note: there's a happy ending.

Kat Bailey: ... Specifically, when Mortal Kombat got into the [...] kinda the N64/PlayStation era, and started making Mortal Kombat adventures, starring, like, Sub-Zero.

Bob Mackey: I kinda stopped after 3, uh...

Mikel Reparaz: Shaolin Monks was actually pretty good. I don't know if you ever played that.

KB: I never thought Mortal Kombat was that great, but it was definitely a huge game, and--

MR: I would say it jumped the shark before that. I would say it jumped the shark with 3, where it added the run button, and just introduced a tonne of ridiculous palette swap characters.

KB: ... But, 3 was still recognizably Mortal Kombat, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 came out, and most people seemed to really like that. Uh, but then they started making the spin-offs for the N64 - and then Mortal Kombat 4 came out and it was in 3D, and it was pretty bad!

BM: I'm kind of on Mikel's side, where I feel like Mortal Kombat 3 was self-parody, where it's like, 'there's eighteen different ninja palette swaps! And then there's like, babalities and animalities!'

KB: Mortal Kombat was always self parody!

BM: Uhhh... but they brought it really, they brought it really far with 3, I think.

KB: Well, I think they were exhausting the concept by 3, but the Sub-Zero adventures and all that stuff was, uh, pretty much the shark jumping moment.[Mortal Kombat Mythologies!] It actually sort of came back with Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, on the PS2. Because they had an actual kind of good 3D engine.

MR: I think the first reboot.

KB: It brought it back to 'not as bad'. And then there were like three of those. And then finally they rebooted it for real. And now people like it again.

BM: Yeah. Some people like it.

For those who might not know - 'jumping the shark' refers to a phenomenon identified by a 1977 Season 5 episode of TV's Happy Days. When Henry Winkler's icon of cool ("The Fonz") jumped a shark on water skis - the show's ultimate decline was sealed. For this reason, pop culture now views it as the measure of a moment when something has lost its way, forsaking its past strengths with an act of dubious quality.

As noted, Mortal Kombat had started to lose its way by the turn of the century, but bounced back in 2002 with the generational high of Deadly Alliance. If you don't agree that MK3 (1995) or Mythologies: Sub-Zero (1997) took the series into realms of frivolity, then the plagued third-person shooter Mortal Kombat: Special Forces is probably your moment. Abruptly released exclusively to PlayStation in 2000 -- the Jax centric shooter was an indistinct prequel to the first game, following Jax's pursuit of the Black Dragon clan across Earth, and eventually Outworld.

Of course, behind the poorly executed MKSF was a fine idea, which leads Mortal Kombat Online to look later for a 'jump the shark' moment. Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe proved to be Midway's last effort before bankruptcy, concluding with a shallow and unimpressive crossover in the vein of the more memorable Capcom versus Marvel series. 2006's Armageddon may also be remembered for its high stakes, but we have to consider it's follow-up - Mortal Kombat (2011) - as a potential candidate for a clumsy story that rendered the previous mythology dead. A disappointing turn for a fighting game with a uniquely progressing saga.
