Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection Update Patch Adds Inter-Console Krossplay
Let the war of realms commence!

Competitive fans of the klassics rejoice! Digital Eclipse has made good on the promise to open the online battlefield even further -- allowing players on different console hardware to challenge each other in various forms of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection! Read on for details and patch notes:

Krossplay is the main feature added in this latest update from Digital Eclipse, but the new additions also add 2 on 2 Online Kombat where it applies in Ultimate MK3 (Arcade, SNES), Mortal Kombat Trilogy (PS1), and Mortal Kombat 4 (Arcade). Variable Refresh Rate is also now available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2 (in handheld mode), and PC, allowing players to sync monitors to non-standard original arcade framerates (eg; 53Hz). This more accurate presentation may improve sensations of input latency as well. Check out the full notes below.

    Patch Notes:
  • Krossplay now enables players across all platforms to play online with other MK fans. PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC gamers can now meet and play in the same online lobbies or Quick Play sessions. (Note: Due to technical limitations, Mortal Kombat Trilogy is not available for online Krossplay matches when playing on original Switch consoles.)
  • The 2-on-2 modes featured in Ultimate MK3 (Arcade), Ultimate MK3 (SNES), Mortal Kombat Trilogy (PS1) and Mortal Kombat 4 (Arcade) are now available for online play. These modes are designated with the words "2 on 2" when they are played in online rooms.
  • In all supported games, players can select their level before an online match.
  • Variable refresh rates (VRR) are now supported for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X, Xbox One S, Nintendo Switch 2 (handheld mode) and PC.
  • Fixed an issue where the minimum connection strength option for rooms was not always working properly.
  • Fixed an issue with Kombat Kard where replays could be accidently erased if unfavorited.
  • Updated localization for various languages.
  • Added various bug fixes and small improvements.

Ed Boon Confirms Cole Young Kameo Fighter Considered for Mortal Kombat 1
Movie protagonist almost appeared in the latest game.

The official theatrical release of Mortal Kombat II is just over a week away -- but it's not just the movie sequel that's making news during interviews! NetherRealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon has confirmed a near-miss connection that would've brought a touch of the recent movies into the world of the video games. Read on for details:

The cast and crew of Mortal Kombat II sat down with ComicBook.com to hype and discuss the next chapter in the movie saga. Among them was series co-creator Ed Boon, who revealed that Cole Young was considered for a Kameo Fighter slot in 2023's Mortal Kombat 1 -- but missed the development window! Boon was also asked Ed has his own cameo in the upcoming movie as Ed The Bartender. Watch the Ticket Sale Trailer for a glimpse.

No spoilers, but Cole Young puts on quite a show in the movie, and I want to know: Are there any chances that Cole could ever appear in a Mortal Kombat video game?

'Yes. He almost did, actually. When we were making Mortal Kombat 1 -- the last game we did -- we had these assist fighters called Kameo Fighters, and for a time we were talking about freaking everybody out and doing Cole Young: Kameo Fighter in the game. Just to kind of connect the games and the films together. Uh, but then we ran out of time, we had to start the next game, and then it just never happened.'

Asked about the best fitting guest character he might like to see, Boon chose Mortal Kombat 11's Spawn, noting: "I thought he was a great match. You know, when you see RoboCop you don't quite think "Mortal Kombat". Right? You see Terminator, you don't quite think "Mortal Kombat", but Spawn has that kind of dark Netherrealm Hell kind of vibe and I think he fits right in there with the MK kind of aesthetic." Watch the full suite of interviews below:

Portrayed by Lewis Tan; Cole Young is a struggling MMA fighter who discovers a bloodline connection to Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada) when he is drawn into the battle between Earthrealm and Outworld. Scorpion was murdered hundreds of years ago in the 2021 film version, which ascribes dragon tattoos to fighters who gain unique powers by harnessing their "Arcana". Cole Young unlocks his ability to manifest armor and weapons from his body over the course of the reboot film, allowing him to defeat Prince Goro in his backyard, and survive a climactic fight with Sub-Zero. A version of the character appeared in early incarnations of the film, to much controversy in 2018. The character returns in Mortal Kombat II for an unknown fate, having appeared minimally in promotional materials.

What do you think about Cole Young crossing over into the world of the video games? Would a Kameo Fighter have been the right way to do it? Penta Enters WWE WrestleMania With Mortal Kombat II Shao Kahn Attire
MKII promotes at wrestling's biggest night!

It's known as the "Showcase of the Immortals" -- but at this year's WrestleMania it looked like a scene out of Mortal Kombat when one of the featured champions made his entrance with a special attire inspired by Shao Kahn! Take a closer look at the WWE/MK crossover that delighted fans of kombat and wrestling alike:

WWE Intercontinental Champion Penta entered Allegiant Stadium on Sunday April 19th, Night 2 of the annual professional wrestling premium event, where he defended his title in a six-man ladder match. His opponents were no doubt intimidated by his fiery entrance -- performed in promotional collaboration with the upcoming Mortal Kombat II movie.

The unique design combined elements of the movie's interpretation of the Outworld Emperor's helmet, complete with an uncharacteristic jaw piece, and flourishes of Penta's own unique spiral-bladed style. Photographer DTFMania captured the grim visage with one of the best images from the event [pictured below]. You can also watch it for yourself in WWE's WrestleMania 42 entrance montage.

It's certainly not the first time wrestling and Mortal Kombat have been in lockstep. Mortal Kombat 11 voice actress Ronda Rousey took inspiration from her character in 2019, with Zelina Vega entering the Royal Rumble dressed like Sindel and Kitana for Halloween, the following year. NetherRealm Studios even sent Johnny Cage into the ring as part of their WWE Immortals mobile game. New Day star and MK11 Reveal Event host, Xavier Woods, also channelled MK's resident thunder god for the app.
