By special request from Shesgotclaws, here's another Full-Kontact Character Beatdown!

THE SIMBERLEEN

Name: "Simberleen" has a nice, smooth MK feel, but "the" is just a little bit rough. Reading ahead, we see that the Simberleen is a semi-sentient virus that is well-known in Chaosrealm -- which leads us to wonder if she is really "the" Simberleen, or if there are others. If there are others (and this is a zombie virus, so yes) then what makes this particular Simberleen special enough to be "the?"

Also, being that this is a virus, would she know she even has a name? For example, if herpes were to mutate and take over a victim's mouth through mind-controlling cold sores, would it introduce itself as "The Herpes" just because that's what we call it?

Maybe the hive-mind virus always calls itself "The Simberleen," in an Ermac-ish sort of way. It seems a little weird for it to call itself that... but if it does, then that's a pretty interesting personality quirk that could've been used a bit more in the overall presentation. Whatever the case, the name is still cool and unique and sounds great coming from the announcer.

Appearance: The primary costume is simple but very effective. It borrows the Silent Hill theme without blatantly copying it (much the way many classic MK characters are tributes to action films) and the result fits MK pretty well. There is existing costume damage and she's weeping blood, so the battle damage model would be a little tricky but not too hard. Maybe some sutures could pop open, and her face can be gruesomely battered. Her alternate costume isn't very distinguished from the primary, as it's just a different kind of hospital garb. It might be more interesting to see her wrapped in odd scraps of clothing torn from victims (perhaps worn incorrectly?) or some other idea to give her appearance more variety.

Story: Pre-infection Kate is the reporter woman from Bloodsport with an intriguing twist. As a journalist she seeks to capture the greatest fighting tournament of our generation, but finds it impossible to really get in close to the events... and then in an ironic turn she becomes one herself. It's an awesome idea. Still, there are a couple places where it contradicts the established MK world. Mostly it's because the ordinary people of Earthrealm are completely clueless about the existence of magic and monsters, yet Kate shows no surprise when people in the tournament throw fireballs and teleport and are acid-spitting lizard men. What should have been the story of the century, of gods and aliens and movie stars with real live superpowers, she leaves behind soon afterward "disheartened" and feeling like a "failure" because nothing interesting happened. Maybe the blood in her eyes was there before the infection, because she'd have to be blind....

The second breach of canon is that the virus is "the most feared parasitic Infection Chaosrealm had to offer." Thing is, Chaos people would have no fear of an anarchy-causing virus (unless they fear the idea of being under control, perhaps). The obvious defense of course is "No, you jackass, it's all the other realms who fear it!" which brings up an important question: how is this the first time the virus invaded Earth? Chaos loves to spread its influence, and portals are all over the freaking place, so why the long wait?

The ending, while cool in its own right, still doesn't venture far from the "kill the boss and gain ultimate power" model. There is no revelation or plot progression that we wouldn't have guessed from the beginning; we don't even have to play the character to know her ending once the word "virus" is spoken. Throwing in an unexpected twist on the virus trope would make this much more fulfilling.

Gameplay: A more crazed and chaotic version of Mileena with a dash of Silent Hill, the fighting style is unique and satisfying, and fills a niche that's very MK-appropriate. She also has a well-rounded mix of special abilities with a solid theme. On the downside, raking claws through the face in an X-ray is a Freddy Krueger signature. Yes, many people would rather ignore Freddy's existence but that doesn't mean he isn't there, and already did that very specific, distinguishing thing.

Her "Vector" Fatality doesn't seem very fatal. If she's only transmitting the virus, then the victim is merely possessed and not entirely dead, kind of like the Lin Kuei cyborgs. Evidence of life and humanity: the survival of Kate's well-spoken Britishness while a demon virus tries to wrestle control of her body. She's a living zombie slave, not dead, and one would assume that the "Fatality" victim would be the same. "Not-so-comical" is an awkward name for her second Fatality, and seems to have little to do with what happens, although it's a splendidly sadistic finisher. But wasn't the Simberleen supposed to convert victims and not completely corpse them up?

Personality: The Simberleen is a strangely sexualized character that evokes some... rather disturbing mixed feelings. Something about her seems genuinely temptress-like, and it comes across much more naturally and for better reasons than it does for Mileena. It's as if the virus's hunger and Kate's repressed emotions have combined into something that triggers both uncontrollable vomiting and uncontrollable... um... other physical reactions. This is sexuality done more correctly than almost anywhere in the real MK world, let alone the fan characters. Also, the victory pose is beastly. 500 Ruby Koins for a job well done.

Conclusion: All things considered, the Simberleen doesn't need much improvement. The story has some hiccups and the ending is predictable, but otherwise it's pretty solid. The Simberleen is likely to be a Final Eight member.

Thx for the comments. However the sand thing is something I thought about initially and decided to keep for a reason. There are certain characters in the actual game who have a specific power that really defines them. For example Smoke imo became really cool when they relied on his element for his special powers. Smoke is what defines him as a fighter and you can tell by his powers the way he uses it to teleport himself, his opponent, to evade attacks etc. So it's a matter of taste but I really wanted to give her the "elusive" fighter persona with the sand ;) Nevertheless thx for the feedback.
Now since you requested some feedback for Sphere, I was initially going to present reviews along with the brackets but yours is the first I did (randomly) so here it goes :P
Sphere: First of all I hate it when people use the "he/she is the only one who can stop the..." thingy. Makes your characters look way overpowered and in this case you dont point out what the reason is for her to be "the only one" so powerful in a game full of ninjas, sorcerers, mosters etc. Moving on, I really like the idea of a female that is neutral and gets her jobs done whatever her boss is evil or good. I also like the black latex outfit though I dont get why she looks totally different in her alt. You give no explanation for that and appearance should be special for new characters to help them gain some identity. Now about her powers, I like that she has gadgets for her specials (kinda like Stryker but in a cooler way) but imho you went way too far with all the different stuff she has. You should keep it more simple coz the general idea is very nice ;)
^That was the initial review I did when I first read Sphere and now that I read it again I found it funny how your "too much sand" comment is similar to my "too many gadgets" comment lol.

Now about my votes in this bracket: -Rik'Ki -Sogratse -Simberleen -Persephone
I will present their reviews later

Group A: Eastwind

It's no secret that Eastwind is one of my favorite characters on this over all roster. Yet, I have some note regarding Rik'Ki. the idea of a witch doctor fighter is cool, and her artwork is pretty. Also, her magic theme fighting style is savvy. But I also feel her profile and information is really jumbled, and at certain points don't make sense. Lets take her Chicken X-ray. Why bother to turn your opponent into a chicken if your just gonna change them back? this feels more like a fatality than an X-ray. this is just one of a few moments that things just don't make sense with Rik'Ki as a playable fighter.

Group B: Alloy
Alloy may be another fighting robot, but it's a twist on the fighting robot that makes him stand out among the others. He has a few holes and 'leaps of faith' in his ending and move set, but still it would be enjoyable to try and tackle his combos. I have already stated my personal feelings on Sogratse during his first match.

Group C: The Simberleen
The sentient virus is an fascinating concept, and the gore factor the character brings to the ring just screams MK. I would be interested to see a fight between the Simberleen and Ermac. "We are many.....so are you, apparently." As you know, I mentioned my qualms with Saphira last round.

Group D: Persephone

I have been waiting for this deadly lady to make her entrance. One of the most intriguing female fan champions to date, in my opinion. The idea of a mortal Saurian soul in a immortal human body is a cool quirk, and her fighting style reflects it. And as for Gus, the less said the better.

I have great feelings on Eastwind, The Simberleen and especially Persephone.

Personally, I can see Kira going up against Eastwind and Persephone at separate occasions, and not showing too much aggression because she can somehow sense their aims. They are both noble and I admire that.

thanks for the review projectzero00 and everyone else who reviwed Sphere.
I wouldn't mind seeing more reviews guys/girls on Sphere. keep them coming. it's helping me understand what improvements i can make in the next tournament. the next tournament i'll have a new character for sure. i had couple different ideas for characters but i decide to use this 1.

by the way when ever i say to much of whatever i mean that i see something used in finishers, special moves,x-ray,victory pose and etc.

this character i really wanted a weapon head. to answer your question why her alt is so different. that's what she looked like before she went through various jobs and missions for the eldar gods. that's why she looks human then all disfigured. if you you guys/girls have any questions about my character i'd gladly answer them.

There seems to have been a misunderstanding regarding Persephone's origins.

Persephone is not a Saurian, but the realm Zaterra itself.

In a sense, she is their mother.

I wasn't going to waste my time with reviews of the character biographies, but I feel inclined to point out a shitload of gripes that I have with one "character" (who is, in fact, a realm) in particular.

Persephone is easily the most absurd out of all of the entries. She's not even a living entity and was christened after the nonexistent daughter of an Elder God.

Before I continue, I'd like to point out that it's illogical to assume that Shinnok, a fallen Elder God, would possess the capacity to procreate when his one true motive has always been to become all-powerful. Procreation would only prove to serve as a hindrance, if only for the reason that his enemies could use his progeny as a means of ransom (that is, if he possessed the faculty to care for this child). It's also been pretty plainly stated that the Elder Gods do not possess emotion, and the act in which one must participate to bring about procreation requires at least some emotion. That's not even the real issue here, though.

Plainly put, Persephone's story is vague and doesn't provide a clear image of exactly what in Hell she's supposed to be. Given that all of her moves begin with "Persephone projects a bolt of energy", one can only assume that she's a statuesque entity that is too dim-witted to learn how to throw a kick or a punch.

The fact that she's a fucking realm is absurd in its own right, but the absurdity is snowballed by the obtuse reasoning that, instead of actually being a material entity, she's a lifeless, witless windup toy of the Elder Gods whose only means of offense and defense is the emission of projectiles. So, employing that line of reasoning, her opponents would only have await an opening (which couldn't take long), take hold of her, choke her out, and move on with their lives.

The ending, for all intents and purposes, doesn't even serve as an ending at all. So, she realizes that Reptile is a traitor, for lack of a better term. What next? I mean, it just leads one to believe that Persephone's entire existence is futile and that the Elder Gods were completely oblivious that, in fact, a female Saurian actually existed. Why didn't the Elder Gods inform her of Khameleon's existence? All this could have been avoided if she'd been aware of that lone and pretty damn significant detail.

Finally, "The End of Eternity" can't even be truly labeled a "Fatality" given its vague and inconclusive "description" (if you can even call it that). In short, you can't be certain that her opponent died. Everything goes white, and then black. Oh my!--Someone turned off the lights! No screams, no explosions, no bone-crunching, and no wet slapping sounds as entrails smack into solid objects. Just be glad that this massive heap of garbage wasn't around when my site (and others like it) was still active. If Persephone was to compete, I wouldn't give her a week before she was decimated at the hands of...name a character. *laughs* I just wish I'd had the time to compose an entry for this thing. (Thank God for Ameerah, though.) That is all.

I was honestly hoping that you'd provide an explanation for a lot of the unexplained material in her bio, man. For instance: If the Elder Gods are aware of Reptile, then they should be aware of Khameleon as well. I mean, they're Gods; they're all-seeing and all-knowing.

The initial concept was intriguing, but the execution was dismal to say the least. I just wish that you would've provided more information instead of hastily and carelessly throwing things together. A lot of important plot points appear rushed or blatantly ignored.

Nah, I'm pretty content with how she is, and she's a whole lot better than my last entry. lol

I don't really mind if people don't like her, or even think she's downright horrible. At least I gave it a shot, you know?

And I think she's pretty sweet, so even if she doesn't make it to the finals, I'm cool with her.

Yeah, I can appreciate that line of reasoning, in spite of the fact that it clashes with how I view my own work. I can see how I can come off as quite the asshole on occasion, specifically when it comes to my manner of criticism, but my only goal is to see that the artist/author draws on my experience and puts at least a portion of my analysis into practice.
