Group 1: Eastwind

Umbra dose it again. I feel Eastwind has a real chance at becoming a fighter on the actual MK roster. His sand powers and attacks are interesting, his back story and ending are woven well into the MK universe, and his design is original yet not to over the top. And while Remnant has these things as well, his look just feels more at home in the Fallout games, and his story has a few hiccups in my opinion. Out of the two west walkers, Eastwind is my favorite in the match, and in the overall lineup.

Group 2: Blight

Two champions of Chaosrealm after my champions own heart. Blight has cool undead motif going for him, as well as interesting description. I would have loved to see some artwork. Sogratse felt like a good start, but not completely finished. Also, his moves came off as confusing and more self destructive. If they had been just confusing, but when punched into a decent combo that hashed out a lot of damage to the opponent, then I could understand. but I feel very few would want to play a fighter in a fighting game that hurts himself as much as his opponent.

Group 3: Wei-Lu

The old wandering warrior has my vote for this round. I like his ties to Shang Tsung and his fighting style history. Sadly, Phantom loses my vote for the same reasons as last time, that he's more of a boss than a fighter.

Group 4: Xorah

I don't.....I....-stares at Gus's profile- confused
I vote for Xorah. That's all I'm gonna say.

Luren & Uresula are really good characters, though I think I'd rather they be individual than a tag team. Rik'Ki is a very strong character, and I can see her in all kinds of fighting games. Soulcalibur, Tekken, Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, you name it. However, I can't for the life of me see her in MK. Nevertheless, Rik'Ki is a bomb ass character, and I'm making her as soon as I get Soulcalibur V.

My judgment:

Group A:
Rik'Ki - Anyone who is 5'3" shouldn't be competing in a tournament with individuals who are between six and eight feet in height. It would be plausible if Rik'Ki possessed abilities that outweighed her physical limitations, but I see nothing in this bio that would indicate such an advantage. Personally, she gives the impression of being a cheap knockoff of Chaos from "Primal Rage", especially given the so-called "Vomit Bomb" coupled with the witchdoctor guise. There is a bit of overkill in terms of the chanting as well.

Remnant - The appearance seems a bit uninspired, as do the bio and ending, but the special moves seem to possess a bit more ingenuity. This is especially true for the "Time Travel" move and the enhanced versions of each of the "...of the Dead" variants. Remnant's fatalities are also believably sadistic, a trait that is almost demanded in the MK universe and something that Rik'Ki fails to achieve.

Final verdict: Remnant, who, with some minor tweaking, seems like a plausible member of the MK cast.

Group B:
Luren-Uresula - I am in awe of the inventiveness behind this character, though "they" seem a bit more suited for "Soul Calibur". That is not to say that the character doesn't possess the potential of being a part of the MK universe. In terms of appearance, especially, Luren-Uresula seem(s) better suited for the "Soul Calibur" universe.

The originality in the bio, the ending, and the ingenuity in the fighting style certainly lend themselves to something that the MK universe has yet to experience. Luren-Uresula is comparable to Noob-Smoke, but with a lot more creative talent behind "their" plot.

Dai Kahn - This bio has me questioning whether or not a grammar-checking tool exists in this user's word processor. The bio was so poorly written (contrasts in past and present tense, most notably) that I could barely stand to make it to the middle before I shrugged off the increasingly unlikely possibility that things would improve. Quite the contrary, it got worse the deeper I delved into it until I decided that I could no longer take the incessant rambling. The special moves and fatalities by no means required any creative talent and are simple rehashes of existing attacks coined for characters in the MK universe.

Final verdict: Luren-Uresula, and it's not even close.

Group A: Rik'Ki: I like Rik'Ki as a character. I think she's cool. I especially love her outfit, and it's nice to see a South American fighter, which MK doesn't have. However, in terms of storyline, I think she might be too powerful, or too similar to Nightwolf. Also, a Demi-God is a half-god (like Rain), where I think you were trying to mean something like an Elder God, or some kind of more-powerful-than-a-normal-god spirit.

Remnant is also a likable character. The mask switching fighting style is quite original and I can't say I don't like the cowpoke aspect of the character. Again, though, maybe a little too powerful, with the "being unleashed upon Shang Tsung and then Quan Chi and then Shao Kahn" aspect.

I think I'm going with Remnant, though, because he's more morbid and I really like that mask-switching thing.

Group B: Luren-Uresula: I'm going to go with what's been said here (if it has already) and reiterate the idea that these characters might be more suited to a Soul Calibur type game. The idea of bringing in another entirely new realm, while I'm not against it, I'm not particularly for it, either. But the inventiveness of the characters' moveset and their great costume designs are quite compelling. Yes, I can see how they're like Noob-Smoke, but how do the game mechanics work if they're in a tag team mode?

Dai Kahn: Your little fanfic was fun to read, but I don't really think Shao Kahn needs a brother. His moveset is almost identical, too.

Going with Luren-Uresula here. Well done.

Group C: Phantom: I'm sorry, I don't really understand the bio very well. He's like a child of the elder gods chosen to save the universe? So he's kind of like Taven? Or kind of like a "Shujinko gone right?" Hotaru is from Orderrealm/Seido, not Edenia, btw. I really like the moveset and opening/closing, though; I think the plasma thing is pretty cool. Kind of like the Capri Sun children, or like Alex Mac.

Saphira: It's clear to me that you used a machine translator, but that's okay. However, she's basically just Jade, except she uses a bow and arrow. I guess since we-- oh wait, Nightwolf. Nevermind. Nice drawings, though!

Choosing Phantom.

Group D: Gragtek: Now here's the thing. I legitimately like Gragtek. I think this is a really interesting, fun character (if not a little Kano-ish), with the hunter aspect and the not-all-powerful but integrated-into-canon aspect, and the fun moves (although they're not that cohesive). Wish I could have seen a picture.

But the problem is that

Gus McDaniel! Why did it have to be you?! How can I possibly vote against you and your brilliant, brilliant Gus?! Incredible! Amazing! Original! Heart-wrenching!

Sorry, though, McD, gonna have to go with Gragtek.

My judgment (Part II):

Group C:
Phantom - Quite honestly, after taking a glance at the eyesores that are the sprite edits, my initial thought process was that there was no way that I was going to enjoy the rambling nonsense that followed. Boy, do I hate being right all the time. Note to the author: When a conversation occurs, it is essential that you start a new paragraph each time that one individual stops talking and another begins. You should probably do a little more digging when it comes to certain characters and from which realm they hail (i.e., Hotaru originated from Order Realm). Those sorts of inconsistencies are inexcusable.

Moreover, the special moves appear to have been hurriedly slapped together and some (Distinct Snake, for example) are too vague in description to provide any real impression of what's happening. At least they're consistent with the character's personality--in some form or fashion, anyway. The fatalities are a bit exaggerated, but I suppose that they do hold some semblance to what one would expect in the MK universe.

Saphira - Get a spell checker and a grammer checker, or a ghost reader, or learn to check (and double-check) your own material for errors because the number of mistakes in this is unforgivable. The most obvious of those errors is the constant back-and-forth of gender indicators, like there was a battle of the sexes taking place in your word processor while you typed up this debacle. If only for the sake of the "author's" dignity, there's no need to provide further assessment of this disasterpiece. Moving on...

Final verdict: Phantom, by default. Though, I find it necessary to mention that had this been placed against any of the other entries, it'd have suffered a fate not unlike its current opposition.

I'll review the final group at a later time. For the most part, reading this drivel has been nearly unbearable. I do appreciate the effort and ingenuity devoted to two of the entries thus far, though. So, at least there's that...

Luren-Uresula - Might as well, heh...
Phantom - Hm.
Gragtek - Werepiranhas, foo'.

CaTigeReptile Wrote:

I thought about that too! Heh... Maybe I should have written more in their fighting style section, I just didn't want it to be too long. Luren/Uresula don't function as two separate characters, they would share life and meter. Switching between them is done through specific button inputs (which is only hinted at in their description) that make the partner immediately take the exact place of the other hunter in a flash of "magical video game fog sparkles", heh, that way it wouldn't interfere with tag team mechanics... I could elaborate on this from a 'lore' perspective, but again, I wanted to try and make the entry as brief as possible without oversimplifying, so any information that wasn't absolutely necessary was cut. My basic idea was that outside of their home realm (where they strive to always feel connected to nature, as is said in Luren's alternate costume description, I think) they lose that nature connection, their individual life forces are greatly weakened, thus they must connect with each other in a similar way (a living thing from their home world) to maintain their power and general health. This ties in with their race's affinity for spirits.

I'm sorry, I didn't want to answer that question with a huge paragraph... But I did. sleep

acidslayer Wrote:
Sphere? I’d like to know what you guys/girls think of my character. Your thoughts and opinions good/bad.

Well since you asked, here comes a Full-Kontact Character Beatdown!

SPHERE

Name: The name is certainly MK worthy, falling into the "characters named after things" convention. Out of 64 playable characters in the series, 17 of them (just over a quarter) follow this pattern, so one more really doesn't hurt. The name "Sphere" sounds futuristic, high-tech, and possibly alien. It sounds natural enough coming from the announcer's voice. "Sphere Wins... Flawless Victory!"

Appearance: Her primary appearance fits the profile that her name suggests: she is a futuristic mercenary with a slight Batman feel. She seems to have a lot of battle damage, and while the old wounds are pretty good for MK, the sheer number and gruesomeness of the burns and staples and existing costume damage will make it hard to make a battle damage model in the game. She looks like she's already taken all the beatings she can possibly take.

Her alternate appearance completely does away with all this hyper-badassery and transforms her into a virginal schoolgirl who is "completely beautiful and not disfigured in any way," who also shows her underwear -- which instantly undoes everything we have come to know and respect about this character. It's hard to make a schoolgirl type seem believable in the world of MK; Gogo Yubari from Kill Bill could potentially work, but even then it's a little out of place. That's more of a Tekken-type character, where characters fit more into anime styles than they do in MK.

Story: She's a purpose-driven mercenary created by the Elder Gods from the souls of fallen Earthrealm fighters, sent to stave off Shinnok's invasion in a future game. So far, Sphere delivers on the promises made by her name and primary outfit. It's a great base for a story, but it has some holes when it comes to fitting the MK universe. First, why are the Elder Gods tampering with souls that are rightfully the property of the Netherrealm? The Elder Gods have a long, ridiculous history of keeping their hands out of worldly affairs, even when the very universe is at stake. They either wait until it's way too late to intervene (MKD, MK9) or they sit back and do butt squat through the whole war (MK4), or they make up a half-assed plan that basically comes down to "let's wait and see what happens" (MKA). So in a way, Sphere's story actually makes a little too much sense to work in MK because it relies heavily on semi-competent gods who actually care. It's a good story, but it could be improved by having the gods act in-character.

Her ending makes a Deadly Alliance reference. MK9 already makes two different Deadly Alliance jokes (Shang/Quan, Scorp/Sub) with almost the exact same wording about not being able to stop this Deadly Alliance, and by now the phrase Deadly Alliance has become tiresome and meaningless. Deadly Alliance is a perfectly good place to go for the next phase of her story, but a different mode of storytelling would really help against this Deadly Alliance.

Gameplay: Not too bad so far, but the gameplay is where she starts to get a little shaky. For one, all her advanced weapons don't feel right for a divine champion forged from the souls of several mystic warriors. Second, several of her specials have way too much wind-up time to be practical -- like when she pulls out a mortar, grabs some ninja stars, coats them in poison, loads them, then finally fires them at the enemy. By the time she has even gotten to Step 3 of the animation, Cyrax has scored a Double Flawless and diced her to pieces. Also, a mortar is a small cannon, which is wildly impractical even if she did have it miniaturized in her belt. Third, she has 3 moves that are either unblockable or have a confusing block scheme that doesn't match the animations or hit range. Bubble Rocket is a potential game-ender unless the enemy can teleport.

Also, this fighter has way too many weapons going on. She uses more weapons than Stryker and any two cyborgs of your choice combined. Having so many wildly different weapons takes away from her having a strong, signature theme.

Personality: Why is this champion of the Elder Gods so oversexualized? This is one female MK fighter one would expect to have some dignity. But instead she "gives the opponent the finger, show her tits, and laughs." Shows her tits? Given how horribly maimed this woman is, it's genuinely surprising that she still has both her tits. And it's also hard to imagine her saying "love what you can't have" with six staples in her cheek, without her sounding like a stroke victim. Sooo not sexy. Definitely not a divine enforcer.

Conclusion: Sphere is a character with abundant potential as a mercenary for the Elder Gods. Tighten up her gameplay, give her a weapon set with a more focused theme, and for the love of the Gods let her have some self-respect, and this character can go a long way.

Group 1: Rik’Ki
One of the main things I am judging champions on is if they fill a fighter gap in the MK universe, and if they fill that gap with few problems as possible. Out of the two here, I feel Rik’Ki accomplishes both of those roles, where Remnant seems to only do fill the second. Also, both are described in their bios as magic users. Rik’Ki performs magic in the majority of her Special Move set, X-Ray, and second Finisher. Remnant, however, appears to use his magic skills for only one Special Move and one Fatality. This may be a nit-pick on my part, but it clashes with the character bio and ending.

Group 2: Dai Kahn
This was a difficult and painful choice. Luren and Uresula are AMAZING characters, and it is obvious a lot of time and thought went into the design, the back story, and the move set. It is one of the best profiles I have seen. But the big nagging problem to me was they don’t feel like MK characters. They feel like they belong in their own story, their own videogame, and their own novel what say you. As I stated before, I look to see if the champion fits into the MK Universe. And sadly, these two don’t. It’s a single reason, but a big one to me, and that’s the only reason I voted for Dai Kahn over them.

Group 3: Phantom
For all the overpowered skills, lucky run-ins with all the factions and fighters of the tournament, at least Phantom is his own creation. Saphira is a female ninja clone without any thing unique. Jade and Melina were clones of Katina, but they had their own brand of female warrior. It’s a good start, but then what made her interesting wasn’t there. Phantom gets a vote this time because he has more than enough of that ‘something special’.

Group 4: Gragtek

Maybe some people want to know what other people think of the character that they put the time in to create. I don't think that there's anything wrong with a little critique (though not a wall of text, as you said) and if you don't like it, then just scroll past it.

I'm not as big on the negative critiques though. Constructive criticism is one thing, but no need to insult something that someone else took time on here. None of us are the NRS creative team after all.

If people want to throw a little of their opinion at some of the creators, then cool. If not, and they just want to submit their picks, that's cool too.
