umbrascitor, if you could please, do your worst for my Persephone.

My worst, eh? Then get ready for a Full-Kontact Character Beatdown!

PERSEPHONE

Name: "Persephone" sounds great for Mortal Kombat. In Greek mythology, Persephone at first appears to be a perpetual damsel of distress, being the slave-bride of Hades. But her predicament also makes her the Queen of the Underworld, who "carries into effect the curses of men upon the souls of the dead," which is in all ways legitimately badass. The name brings the promise of a complex and powerful character, so let's see how she holds up.

Appearance: Persephone appears to be a goddess/knight with light and dark aspects, which is thematically very appropriate for the mythical Persephone. She looks like a SoulCalibur character, but it seems she was built in the SC creator by necessity, so let's forgive that. The question is, could this character design work in MK or can it be altered easily enough to fit MK's aesthetic? With Ashrah as a model, perhaps it can. Now let's learn more about Persephone, the divine mistress of the shado--

Story: -- oh. Our Greek mythology assumptions were just a tiny bit off. This Persephone is basically the Eywa of Zaterra, the living consciousness of an entire realm, like the semi-sentient planetary life forces from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. It seems a little over the top at first glance, but it does have a home in MK. After all, MKD established the existence of a sentient One Being whom the Elder Gods divided into the many mortal realms. This life force, therefore, is just a fragment of that ancient cosmic entity. Presumably when the Kamidogu of Zaterra was broken (the minor realms have Kamidogu too, right NRS?) the energy was unbound from its realm and fled to the Elder Gods for safety.

Boy was that a mistake. True to their nature the Elder Gods didn't give a shit, and decided to take one instead. In their infinite wisdom they completely overlooked the existence of Khameleon, and drove the life force to sacrifice its planet-ness to breed with Reptile and start the incest train a-chuggin'. And because a humanoid goddess intimately touching a lizard's cloaca is totally gross, the Elder Gods disavowed having any hand in this madness and cast her into the Void under an assumed name. They called their harlot Persephone after Shinnok's dead daughter, because maybe they didn't like Shinnok for some reason, who knows.

The Elder Gods' sadistic Saw games with Persephone end in tragedy when she later learns that there was already a female Zaterran (making her sacrifice pointless) and Reptile has no interest in copulating anyway (making her entire mission pointless). We assume the Gods have a hearty laugh, and that's the end.

Wait a minute, what? That's the end? So... Persephone has no more plans for the future? Her story just sort of... stops? This story was really going somewhere until that point. But now it's just kind of depressing and, well, pointless. All of this dramatic stuff happened, and there is no closure or progression for us to look forward to.

Unless of course the next act ventures into girl-on-girl fanfic territory so that Persephone and Khameleon can somehow restart their race themselves. Because when it comes to dinosaurs, life finds a way.

Gameplay: While her story fits together well enough while being pretty freaking bizarre, her gameplay is just pretty freaking bizarre. Without the ability to jump or crouch, and only being able to dodge using three-step teleport inputs, she would be utterly crippled in a fast-paced tournament setting -- or even in a normal game against anyone with decent skills. In order to even survive she has to spam the Buffalo-Heart tactic, which would be tedious to the player and infuriating to the opponent.

Thematically, we wonder why she summons animal spirits that are actually modern Earth animals that would have evolved long after the evacuation of the dinosaurs. Wouldn't Zaterra have had its own alien fauna to live on in Persephone's memory? That would've been cool to see.

The X-ray seems to have little to do with swastikas or sundials, but rather the points of a compass -- and the bone breaks still don't quite correspond to those points. So while the attack itself might be a clever and brutal use of her planetary magnetic field, the name and description don't bear that conclusion, or any conclusion at all as to what is happening.

And the Fatalities... dying of grief? Like Dampierre's thing? And what about that fade-to-black Fatality? At least when Sub-Zero did it we got to hear some screams, and it still was a big let-down: a joke finisher to make fun of MK censorship in the old days. We as a general audience do not have, need, or want non-violent Fatalities, as evidenced by the near-unanimous public outcry against MKvsDC, resulting in the much-praised ultramegaviolence we have in MK9.

Personality: Being that planetary consciousness beings aren't the most outgoing types, her shining lack of personality is somewhat forgivable. She just sort of floats there and kind of moves in a direction, like a planet does. That being the case, why is she jeopardizing everything she's trying to preserve by picking fights with random, immensely powerful warriors who will quickly murder her and destroy all hope for Zaterra simply because she's incapable of ducking under a punch? This character's entire presence in the game appears to revolve around a fiery cosmic ball of bad decision-making, tidally locked so that her mistakes are constantly burning her in the face with no hope of escape.

Conclusion: Persephone starts out looking really good for Mortal Kombat, but unfortunately the splendor fades quickly once you squint a bit and see past the dazzle. This is a character who, according to every written description in her story and game presence, literally accomplishes nothing. It sounds like an unspeakably harsh judgment, but as painful as it is to say, it appears that the realm of Zaterra was lost for a reason.

I'm curious as to what people think of my character.

This one's a little shorter, so for tonight here's one last Full-Kontact Character Beatdown!

BLIGHT

Name: Pure MK goodness. "Blight" is disease and death incarnate. Nothin' much to say about that.

Appearance: While Drahmin, Meat, and zombie Liu Kang already have a rotting corpse thing going on, Blight manages to take the idea and make something sort of unique out of it. However, this would probably be the very last rotting corpse we'd be willing to add to the roster, because like the robots and ninjas and cryomancers there's only so much of one thing that we can handle.

One major problem though is that he is missing many internal organs that feature in certain characters' X-rays and Fatalities. How silly would it look for Mileena to grab him and viciously stab the empty space where his stomach should be? Or for Reptile to plunge his claws into nothing, then rip nothing out of it, then hold nothing over his head in triumph?

Story: Blight's tale of having his world torn apart and finding solace in his dark magics is truly gripping, and somehow we can feel for him and cheer him on as he searches for purpose, delves into his studies, and finally assaults the Heavens. His combined traits of necromancer, scholar, and madman make him unique and welcome in the world of MK. Trouble is, he makes quite a few enemies with the basic canon.

One false claim is that Blight's tainted soul would drive Shao Kahn insane, when the Emperor himself is so proficient in dark magic that his power drives sorcerers insane. Of course, Shao Kahn may not have been as powerful back then as he is now, so the Dragon King's top sorcerer could possibly best him, right? Wrong, because the Dragon King had no need of sorcerers in the first place. According to many official sources, the Dragon King did all the raising of the dead by himself. So technically speaking, this character should not exist.

Gameplay: Blight borrows the skeleton hand grab from MKA Shinnok, the leaping bite from MK9 Mileena, and the gas cloud from MKA Smoke. The only somewhat original special move is his Ligament Smash, which works just like Mavado's dash kick but with stretchy arms instead of stretchy ropes.

It's a dismal start, but Blight's originality really kicks in with his Fatalities, especially the one where he rips off his own torso and then tears the other guy in half and steals his fricken legs because holy shit, this chaotic necromancer is a complete badass! If this level of savagery and originality came out in the rest of his fight, then forget all that crap about his story being impossible -- this guy would be fun as fuck. And how fun is fuck? Fuckin' fun.

Personality: His entry and victory poses are also awesome, although the arm rip in his victory pose is a little too close to being a Fatality. Sure, Stryker gets to blow a chunk out of somebody and Shang Tsung steals a little bit of soul, but they're only doing a small bit of rub-it-in-your-face damage (the kind of damage they already inflict during the fight) while Blight is taking a whole arm. It's a cheater's half-Fatality.

Throughout his presentation his madness comes across pretty well, but we never really know what the heck he's doing in the tournament. He hasn't taken any sides (which would seem to be a requirement to get in the tournament) and since he "forgot who he was or where he came from" he wouldn't even remember Shao Kahn's treachery. Yes, Blight has a sense of purpose in his life, but it would help to make it clear what his purpose is in the events of the game.

Conclusion: Blight is positively crawling with potential, and his character really stands out. Build a bridge to get him into the tournament, give him a more distinctive moveset, and fix his broken links to the established canon, and this guy could be a winner.

Yeah, the two things I regretted was giving him the moves I did and the "make Kahn go insane" piece. But then again, your critique about it driving Kahn to the brink of insanity and the need for a necromancer in Onaga's court are unrelated. The taint in his soul comes from the necromantic magic he practices. If you want to say that "Onaga doesn't need necromancers because he does the raising himself" that's fine. Still with an army as large as the one Onaga had acquired, even he can't be in all places at once. So why not have at least one other who could help keep the numbers strong.

But if you have time, feel free to check out the RP thread and see his intro quote.

Goodness, talk about an INTENSE matchup in Group C! By sheer skill, I have to give it to Ekimaru, even though he can't really go well against plasma ability from Phantom outright (which is likely the latter's only way to find a win and destroy the "god hunter", but that will be noticed and countered upon by dodging the attacks).

Group A = Vipehr
Group B = Dead Soul
Group C = Ekimaru
Group D = Kira

WHY DID I SEE THIS FIRST MATCHUP OF KIRA'S COMING TO BE THIS? lol I frikking CALLED IT! Note: There not being enough on Kira that everyone knows, I do not actually want a beat-down of her just yet. Strange, I know, but I'd like more of her subtle nuances to come out, and a lot of it ties back to her creator and husband. I may highlight on his decisions to approach Outworld in the Roleplaying Thread, so keep an eye there.

Me too, sorta. I have been going between characters I want to make/use in the next tourney. I have two characters in mind at the moment:

Mitsu-Ginchiyo
Anicula

Maybe I'll use both like Luren-Uresula XD! Not Really, though.

I just realized something. If you use Luren-Uresula in Tag Team Ladder, can you use another person too? Also, the name would show up weird on the Ladder Screen:

A character of mine I was considering for this tournament was Amaterasu, a Japanese human immortal.

However, I decided against it because I wasn't sure how people would recieve his being a drag queen.

Amaterasu? Isn't that the name of the main character in Okami?

As for the drag queen idea, I think it has potential as long as it's not a raging stereotype. I kinda wish that MK would avoid stereotypes altogether. I wasn't a huge fan of Jax's "big gold medallion" alt outfit in MK:DA.
