Added The Following Costume for Online Compatibility:
High kick doyen Jean-Claude Van Damme has been back in the news with his re-enactment of his Kickboxer dance scene during Conan. The appearance clearly caught Mortal Kombat X Creative Director Ed Boon's attention. Following the appearance, he floated the concept of introducing the eighties & nineties action star as an in-game skin:
So we're already doing Carl Weathers as Jax. What do you think about a Jean Claude Van Damme skin for Johnny Cage? pic.twitter.com/g6kjb2Mony
The idea isn't as silly as it sounds for a couple of reasons. Primarily: Carl Weathers is already slated to join the game as one of the bonus skins included with The Kombat Pack The Rocky & Predator star will "play" Jax, included with playable guest character: Predator.
A body of work that includes films like Bloodsport, The Quest, Street Fighter & Double Impact more than qualifies Van Damme for invitation to the Mortal Kombat tournament, but the ties go deeper. Industry lore has it that Van Damme was considered for a licensing crossover with the game that would become Mortal Kombat. Series co-creator John Tobias explained in an interview with Mortal Kombat Online:
When the game was still merely an idea in our heads, we thought that it would be necessary to attach a license to the project to justify its existence to our management. I believe Roger Sharpe (famous pinball aficionado and historian), who handled Midway's licensing deals at the time, was approached by a movie studio with Van Damme's Universal Soldier film as a possible game tie-in.
We envisioned Van Damme's involvement as a character in our game's story, or as playing himself in the game. That deal didn't pan out and we simply moved on.
Comparisons between Jean-Claude and the similarly initialled MK action star Johnny Cage make it easy to conceive of a JCVD skin. If you aren't quite sold on it, you may want to check out a fan-made Bloodsport/Mortal Kombat mash-up!

Fortunately, DC Comics continues to fill in the gaps with its top selling digital and print serials. 13th Dimension has an illuminating preview for Mortal Kombat X #6 - where Sub-Zero is dealing with one of his secrets.
Sub-Zero's transformation into a Lin Kuei cyborg was one of the bombshells of the new timeline introduced in Mortal Kombat (2011)! Restored by Raiden during the plot of the game: the man named Kuai Liang is clearly haunted by the memory of his experiences. Sub-Zero endured cybernetic conversion, to being reborn in the Netherrealm as a human revenant under the control of Quan Chi! Finally his secret origin can be told!
Mortal Kombat X #6 goes on sale in all good comic stores Wednesday, May 13th! Note: The print edition contains digital chapters 16-18, written by Shawn Kittelsen and drawn by Daniel Sampere. The cover by Stephen Segovia & Rod Reis features Kotal Kahn and his loyal followers.

Hello, baby. Did you miss me? The next Invasion Boss has launched full scale war against online players in Mortal Kombat X!
This time Kano turns his lazer sighted gaze to the goal of spreading chaos! The wanted criminal represents the ultimate challenge - one you won't overcome on your own! This will be a team effort as the boss tier threat pushes you to do what damage you can, before succumbing to nigh inevitable defeat or time limit.
Players can choose to join the Black Dragon, Special Forces, Brotherhood of Shadow, Lin Kuei or White Lotus Society. Representing a clan earns points toward player rewards and achievements, with every action in the game contributing to your clan's total assault! Use clan recruitment posts on the forum to share valuable boss strategies to help spur your faction to victory!
EDITOR'S NOTE
Is Kano a fighter associated with the Chaosrealm? Absolutely not. The odds of Faction Mode being a vessel for unannounced fighters were always pretty slim. Including Chaosrealm without material to support it is a dubious choice by the developer, but try not to let that get in the way of the intended game. This is mode first - and the mode is all about the shared experience of the community challenge. This is the time to pick an underdog faction and take the fight to the world.

The design divided diehard fans, but went on to be the best selling DLC for the game. In Mortal Kombat X, concept artists have helped to redesign and redefine klassic icons for a new generation. In this Mortal Kombat Online exclusive update: artist Justin Murray takes us deeper into the design process, revealing unused and unseen visions for the soul warrior: Ermac!
The concepts range from familiar variations on the final design, to intriguing reinventions that turn the new look into something slightly different.
A completely unmasked Ermac instantly stands out, showing a fused mouth, pale face and chilling gaze. When dressed all in black, he's almost a vision of death itself - helped along by a dark hooded coat. The hood and jacket motif have been a consistent fixture for Ermac's primary designs for Mortal Kombat X. They combine with past elements in one Murray design, which features details like the Deception era belt, and MK2011's black bandages.
Fans were memorably introduced to similar concepts this time last year, based on similar work shared by NetherRealm artist Bernard Beneteau.
Fans can see more of Justin Murray's Mortal Kombat X concept art in previous features: Reptile & Kitana, Mileena & Ferra/Torr. Mortal Kombat Online will be featuring more work from the artists in upcoming exclusive updates!

Even if you're only remotely familiar with early nineties anthem Techno Syndrome - chances are you've found yourself humming it aloud. What would the affectionately dubbed "Theme from Mortal Kombat" sound like in full a cappella, though? The Warp Zone have answered this question to the tune of 1 million views on YouTube and counting:
The oft referenced techno hit embedded itself in pop culture history in 1995, appearing in the Mortal Kombat feature film, and its subsequent landmark compilation soundtrack. The single began life two years prior as an EP by The Immortals, before featuring as the centrepiece of Mortal Kombat: The Album.
The Immortals were Oliver Adams and Maurice Engelen - members of Belgian collective Lords of Acid. Their crossover hit helped fuel the rise of techno in mainstream music during the early to mid nineties, exposing a generation of fans to the burgeoning sound.
Late Mortal Kombat: Legacy actor Darren Shahlavi shared his love of the influential soundtrack with Mortal Kombat Online, telling us, "I was very familiar with MK, mainly the movie and the soundtrack. I loved it. I trained to the music all the time. I didn't play the game much at all."
