Editorial: Mortal Kombat X Introduces First Gay Fighter
It doesn't matter that Mortal Kombat X has a gay fighter - and that's why it matters!

So... You may have heard that Mortal Kombat X has introduced the series' first confirmed homosexual character: Kung Jin [pictured right].

Quickly after launch, Mortal Kombat Online began receiving enthusiastic submissions from key interest websites [eg; @UKGaynews] - all eager to share and assert the breaking headline. While firsts of any kind are always interesting, we weren't so sure we wanted to dedicate coverage to this one.

There were a few factors behind the hesitation -- an intent to hold-off on detailed content spoilers, chief among them.

We also weren't entirely certain the claims were true, or even in need of special acknowledgment. Then news broke of Marvel Comics preparing to announce popular X-Men character - Iceman - will be gay after fifty-two years of publication. In this adjacent pop culture news, the real importance of Kung Jin became immediately crystallized.

First - clarification. We say Kung Jin is a "confirmed" homosexual character. Uncovering the intent behind the source of speculation was an important detail - one that needed more than interpretation.

It all stems from a dialogue sequence between Kung Jin and Raiden - a flashback during the Mortal Kombat X story mode. Jin is the black sheep to his family's mythic ancestor The Great Kung Lao and his contemporary heroic progeny (also Kung Lao). Raiden sees potential greatness in the now common thief, but Kung Jin lacks confidence in himself, and those charged with defending the light:

Raiden: "Go to the Wu Shi Academy. Join the Shaolin! Like Kung Lao before you." Kung Jin: "I can't. They wont... accept--" Raiden: "They care only about what is in your heart. Not whom your heart desires."

One of the first and few nods from an authoritative source came from Mortal Kombat X Cinematic Director Dominic Cianciolo. He made allusions to the subtext of story dialogue -- and the inferences being drawn by fans and industry commentators -- in a conversational Tweet to NetherRealm Sound Designer Brian Chard.

Without knowing for sure, the line doesn't immediately lend itself to interpreting Kung Jin's sexual preference. It could just as easily be a reference to the moral character of a prospective love interest, some other unspecified allegiance [see; Romeo & Juliet], or a platonic concern. It's incredibly ambiguous - and therein lies its true value.

Pop entertainment and video games are now deep in the throes of a rigorous cultural debate stemming from issues of social, racial and sexual characterization.

As video games and comic book licensing grow to inherit and dominate the forefront of popular entertainment - so too does the scrutiny of a steadily diversifying audience. The more eyes the mediums command, the more they become appropriated by new interests and imposed responsibilities. Boutique mediums traditionally dominated in the West by young, straight male demographics are now being challenged to attract and reflect existing, present, and increasingly available potential audiences. It's a necessary facet of growth - not without its pains.

The acceleration of, and assimilation into, a handheld, 24-hour digital mainstream has reshaped corporate industry, redefined social conscience, and participated in the free exchange of political discourse that blurs the picket lines between democracy and entertainment. The end result can be as cold and cynical as anything that came before it. Marvel Comics: an on-going case in point.

Comic books have become pretty notorious for their cynical manoeuvres. While cross-media properties like Avengers and X-Men may dominate the public consciousness through movies, television and mass produced wares - their home turf in four-color hasn't thrived.

The comics audience has evolved in conjunction with fifteen years of cultural conquest, but parity of gains and losses in comics readership has kept the audience small, and audible. The pulp guide to major industry has been at the forefront of the social debates that are going on now in gaming, spurring the print industry to seek new readership through loud, headline grabbing proclamations targeted at untapped demographics. Iceman is far from the first franchise character to undertake a sudden change of race, sex, or orientation in the service of headlines. He's just the latest. And as the list grows longer - often for a limited time - the clumsy, calculated insincerity of it all starts to overshadow the social benefit.

Kung Jin's sexuality in Mortal Kombat matters because it doesn't matter.

Straight Arrow: Kung Jin's sexuality is unimportant - and that's why it matters.

It would be naïve to think NetherRealm Studios and/or Warner Brothers aren't aware of the homosexual fanbase present within its die hard community. It may be reasonable to think this awareness was an influence in the decision to create a homosexual fighter. Whether the motive was pandering, or not - it's their handling of the fact that may make this one of the most sophisticated and progressive depictions of homosexuality [of this type] in quite some time.

It's difficult to say sexuality doesn't matter to Mortal Kombat. Scantily clad fighters have been an obvious trope of titillation projected toward the audience for a long time. Within the fictional context, however, one might argue there's been limited room for defining sexual orientation. Bone breaking, side-to-side battles haven't lent themselves naturally to romance. They've created a brutal form of gender equality through mutual aggression, but left most of the casts preferences unknown. By and large, it simply doesn't matter.

Kung Jin is a fully realized kombatant. Archery gives him the customary hook of a fighting game character, while his backstory and relationships inform compassionate motives, morality and a sense of identity. Aesthetically, he represents the legacy of the Eastern influences that spawned Mortal Kombat, expanding upon them, even as they become ever diminished. Being gay isn't irrelevant to the character, but it doesn't define him, either. It bucks the stereotypes that can trivialize gay characters, circumvents the creative jack-knife of arbitrary imposed quotas, and avoids the complete undermining cynicism of self-congratulatory press releases.

There's a slightly less glowing side to it. The ambiguity also eases the tension that might be felt by an immature, boof-headed segment of the still male dominated audience. For those who uncomfortably crack the code of plausible deniability, however, there may still be a valuable lesson to be learned: Kung Jin's sexual preference doesn't really matter. Which is actually a credit to NetherRealm Studios.

MKX DLC: Ed Boon Teases Predator Vision Fight Intro
Ed Boon Teases Mortal Kombat X Predator Vision

Whilst rebuking claims about Mortal Kombat X DLC, last week [full story]; Creative Director Ed Boon sneakily previewed what appears to be a unique intro perspective for upcoming guest fighter Predator!

The Predator was initially revealed by Xbox, before emerging from camouflaged obscurity as part of the Kombat Pack Trailer. The titular star of the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger blockbuster comes with a big bag of tricks, including mock invisibility and thermal heat vision - depicted in the image.

The Prey Pack of DLC also comes with a skin of Predator star Carl Weathers (as Jax), Commando Johnny Cage and Infrared Scorpion. Initial retailer reports have an unverified download date of May 23rd [full story].

MKX DLC: Klassic Fatality & Brazil Skins DLC Coming
Steam Database Reveals Unrevealed Future DLC - Fatalityes & Skins

Data tool site Steam Database has uncovered information regarding as yet undisclosed Mortal Kombat X DLC!

Sourced directly fromSteam Database Depots uploaded by the publisher, the list includes the Kold War skin pack revealed with Compatibility Pack v1.02, and items already confirmed for The Kombat Pack.

New to the list are encrypted depots for Klassic Fatalities 1 & Klassic Fatalities 2, as well as Skin Pack - Brazil.

Klassic Fatality DLC was offered for Mortal Kombat (2011), reintroducing the famed Sub-Zero Spine Rip fatality, among others [full story]. Two lots of Klassic Skins inspired by past games are already confirmed for The Kombat Pack featuring Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Jax, Quan Chi & more [full story].

Spine Tingling: Sub-Zero's original Fatality remains a perennial favourite.

Creative Director Ed Boon discussed relevant topics to both lots of newly revealed DLC during Brasil Games Show 2014, last October. There, he teased the possibility of a new form of klassic fatality, as well as a special element aimed at the loyal Brazilian fanbase. Exactly what "Brazil" character skins will involve is anyone's guess. Mortal Kombat X marked a design shift away from the scantily clad women of past instalments, but has favoured somewhat arbitrary themes for its DLC skins.

Bernard Beneteau Mortal Kombat X Goro Production Art
Artist Reveals Mortal Kombat X Goro Production Designs

Fans became enamoured with the work of artist Bernard Beneteau during production of Mortal Kombat X. His unofficial Ermac art captured the minds of fans [full story], "fan art" based on the character he helped design in 2011. Now, with Mortal Kombat X out, Beneteau is sharing work he did do for the game - production art for the highly sought after DLC Shokan: Goro!

Beneteau doesn't simply do justice to the series' original champion - he embellishes him! The art shows a faithful recreation of one of MK's icons, with updates that help the character live up to his legendary status and imbue him with a grander sense of culture. Concept art shows experimentation with Shokan tribal markings, as well as Shokan and personal artefacts -- including Liu Kang's sash - a trophy of battle!

Above all, Goro has an immediate sense of strength and presence. Characteristics vital to the fighter, but only achieved through subtleties of anatomy, scale and texture. His face is stern and proud. His arms many, but well proportioned with his chest and torso. A fine outing for one of the great kombatants! Goro is available now to those who pre-ordered, and to buy for $4.99 as DLC [trailer].

The Future of Non-Playable Characters in Mortal Kombat X
Modders Unlock Playable NPCs, Boon Teases Future DLC

As The Kombat Pack makes preparations to unleash its first downloadable guest fighter [Jason] -- many fans are asking questions about the non-playable characters already included in Mortal Kombat X.

Several series favourites appear in cameo & playable forms during the featured story mode, dangling completely rendered character models in front of a rabid fanbase. Fighters such as Rain, Baraka & Tanya can be battled in the mode, possessing simplified move lists devoid of the Character Variations that make Mortal Kombat X stand apart.

PC versions of Mortal Kombat X have opened the game up to greater scrutiny than ever before. Eurogamer reports one modder's efforts to make NPCs playable with a very simple alteration to existing fighter code. XVermillion explained his method on Reddit [below].

There are other files you can change to get stuff like Rain's name under the health Bar but the only files I modded are in the "Assets" folder I believe; there should be 2 associated with Rain (Rain_A.xxx and another one I can't remember but you can just search the folder for Rain).

Anyway, I backed up the files for Shinnok (the character I'm replacing) and renamed Rain's files to match those associated with Shinnok's 1st costume slot (CHAR_Shinnok_A.xxx and one other, the one that matches Rain's other one) and moved 'em to the folder and overwrote Shinnok's old files with the newly renamed Rain files.

What you see is just me playing in training mode with what the game thinks is Shinnok but is using Rain's model and moveset.

The accessibility of content and compatibility modes has led some fans and outlets to accuse the developers of creating a false premise of paid extra content - "on-disc DLC". A claim denied by Creative Director Ed Boon, who shared a sneak peak at DLC production, begun after the game had gone to press.

In an aggressive rebuttal, Boon tweeted to one claim, "Complete BS. We are literally working on DLC now. Next time do your homework Gaming Bolt." The story has since been updated to include an apology for the assumption.

When quizzed by a fan, Boon did acknowledge the potential adaptation of the characters into fully playable fighters, teasing a "Story Pack". Compatibility Pack v1.02 has already included a free Klassic Sub-Zero skin, as well as online compatibility for Kombat Pack Horror DLC.

MKX: NetherRealm Studios Takes the Cake For Launch
Batman Developer Sends NetherRealm Congratulatory Decapitated Head

Fellow Warner owned game developer Rocksteady Studios has joined celebrations for the blockbuster launch of Mortal Kombat X! NetherRealm Studios literally took the cake -- accepting a deliciously fatal offering from their London based counterparts.

Creative Director Ed Boon shared snaps of the decapitated head cake, which we assume he did not find in his bed the morning of release. That said, given the Arkham series, we can't rule out the possibility of slow working toxins. Tasty! Update: They performed a Scorpion fatality on it - the first made for MKX. It had rice krispies inside [pictured above].

The relationship between NetherRealm and the Batman: Arkham series developers goes beyond simple corporate ties.

In 2011, NRS entered the mobile development scene for the first time, creating the iOS tie-in Batman: Arkham City Lockdown. NetherRealm Studios was also credited with contributions to the main Arkham City release. Rocksteady returned the favour, providing assets for NetherRealm's 2014 DC Comics fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us. The Arkham Asylum arena included several characters from the game - including Scarecrow [video] & Killer Croc [pictured]. An Arkham City Skins Pack redressed Batman, Joker & Catwoman in cross-promotional designs.

Arkham City Villains Appear as Stage Interactions in Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Rocksteady weren't the only industry peers sending well wishes for a big launch! The team behind rival fighter Killer Instinct sent a humble message. NetherRealm Studios themselves marked the occasion, welcoming a Life-Size Scorpion Statue to their Chicago headquarters.

Director Shares Unused Movie Mileena Design Art
Kevin Tancharoen Reveals Unusued Mileena Movie Design

Departed Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen has offered a small glimpse into the movie that might have been. He took to Instagram to reveal an unused design for Mileena in the stalled third Mortal Kombat feature.

The pant design echoes superficial elements of Mileena's Mortal Kombat X design update [see more], but remains typically resistant to the aesthetic established over ten video game instalments. Actress Jolene Tran appeared as Mileena in episodes 4 & 5 of Tancharoen's first series of Mortal Kombat: Legacy - two of the most criticized episodes. Michelle Lee assumed the role in Series 2 of the webseries.

Tancharoen left the movie late in 2013 [full story]; announcing his exit in a brief Tweet more than a year after first teasing a script. Michael Jai White (Jax) was attached to star.

The director reportedly expressed interest in return for a third webseries (this time last year), but has since become involved in episodes of CW's DC superhero genre series The Flash, and Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. Legacy II stunt coordinator Garrett Warren has taken over a third series - "Mortal Kombat: Generations" - with Tancharoen's blessing.

Unused Mortal Kombat X Kitana Design Concepts
NetherRealm Character Artists Reveals Unused Kitana Designs

Continuing the trend of artists releasing Mortal Kombat X concept art; NetherRealm Studios Senior Character Artist Solomon Gaitan has lifted the veil on unused concepts and digital modelling. His work was seen in a previous Kitana gallery; some of his unused designs now able to be seen in greater detail:

Gaitan's designs range from the exposed to the slightly cumbersome, exploring a variety of facets of the Edenian warrior princess. Of his revealing design pictured with red background, the artist explains, "It was too risqué, but something about a sexy princess kicking ass made her feel powerful to me."

Kitana's final game design exhibits basic conceptual elements seen in some of these designs, making for one of her best designs to date [see more]. Mortal Kombat X Ferra/Torr Concept Art
Concept Artist Justin Murray Shares Original Designs for Ferra/Torr

Concept artist extraordinaire Justin Murray is showing off some of his contributions to the freshly minted Mortal Kombat X. This time around it's the deadly duo of Ferra/Torr -- a character Murray helped bring to life!

Ferra/Torr was one of the most unique fighters introduced in Mortal Kombat X, developing a hybrid style beyond the tag team endurance combos of past games. Murray's design art shows an extreme left on the cutting floor -- Ferra's hind chain originally designed with a purpose. "The chain was used to swing her like a spikey mace but was removed."

Murray's other work includes designs for Mileena and Reptile & Kitana. You can see more of his work, and other NetherRealm Studios talents, in concept art galleries for Kitana & Reptile.

NetherRealm Studios Welcome New Addition for MKX Launch

The monument bears striking resemblance to the European Kollector's Edition Scorpion statue, bringing to life the new design featured on every MKX box! Killer Instinct Team Mark Mortal Kombat X Launch
FRIENDSHIP! Killer Instinct Team Wish NetherRealm Studios Well

In a move that is sure to get many fans talking: the Killer Instinct team has sent well wishes to Ed Boon & NetherRealm Studios for their official launch of Mortal Kombat X!

"To @noobde & @netherrealm, have a KILLER Launch!
Love, The #KillerInstinct team.
" - @TheMikeRobles

Before anyone gets too carried away -- the message delivered via Microsoft's Community Manager is much more of a Friendship than a challenge to fight to the death.

Despite Killer Instinct's "MK killer" status in the early nineties, the series has been a cult shadow to Mortal Kombat, dormant since its 1997 Nintendo 64 sequel port, until resurrection as a 2013 Xbox One exclusive. KI's aesthetics and violence paid obvious homage to Mortal Kombat, while appropriating ideas from other fighting game influences, such as Street Fighter.

While Street Fighter has long been seen as the "inevitable" opponent for a future Mortal Kombat crossover, the trans-pacific divide has rarely been crossed [read more], making Killer Instinct's Chicago ties an argument for a franchise face-off.

Mortal Kombat X Mileena Concept Art
Mortal Kombat X Concept Artist Shares Mileena Design Art

The official launch of Mortal Kombat X has brought fans together in celebration for the new game! Joining the festivities Is concept artist Justin Murray, who shared two pieces of Mileena production art to mark the occasion!

The artwork showcases both Mileena's latest alternate attire, and the inner anatomy of her newly redesigned Tarkatan hybrid maw. This is the first time Mileena's exposed mouth has included prominent false lips over her trademark jagged teeth. Ever wondered how she articulates her speech? Wonder no more!

Murray shared more of his work with us, back in February. Those images showed similar attention to detail and anatomy with an unused acid spit concept, and designs for Reptile and Kitana. Click the names to see even more concept art for both characters.

Kommunity: Mortal Kombat X Frequently Asked Questions
Mortal Kombat Online Attempts to Answer Frequently Asked Questions from Fans!

The official launch of Mortal Kombat X has been an exciting, energetic time - but not without its problems and confusion. Mortal Kombat Online has enjoyed receiving and answering as many fan queries as possible. With many repeat questions, we're starting an FAQ to try to help resolve common issues.

For now, our FAQ will cover the commonly asked basics. Register to post additional queries on the forum. There is no knowledge that is not power! We encourage the MKOmmunity to do their best to help.

Frequently Asked Questions:
I purchased The Kombat Pack. Why can't I find/download Jason, Predator or the other characters?
The Kombat Pack guarantees you first access to four downloadable characters and additional skins. Each character will be released incrementally in the coming months, and are not yet available. For more information refer to: the original Kombat Pack story.

I bought Kollector's Edition. Why don't I have The Kombat Pack?
The availability of Kollector's Edition bonuses varied around the globe. Many UK & European editions do not include The Kombat Pack as a standard feature. For more information on global extras, refer to: the original Kollector's Edition story. NOTE: An official global guide table can be launched by clicking the thumbnail at the bottom of the article.

I have the Kombat Pack. Why can't I download Goro?
Goro was a pre-order exclusive unrelated to The Kombat Pack. Goro will be released individually as DLC at a later date (to be advised). For more information refer to: the original Goro Pre-Order story.

I pre-ordered Mortal Kombat X. Why isn't Goro in my game?
You will need to input the DLC code to gain access to your pre-order playable Goro. This code may be provided on a special card, or on the receipt of your purchase. On PS4 use the dynamic menu to go to the store and highlight "redeem codes". On Xbox One, go to games and select "use code". For Steam, select Game and "Activate Product".

I pre-ordered Mortal Kombat X but don't have a Goro code. What do I do?
First ensure you haven't received your DLC code via a receipt, or online store e-mail (check your junk folders). If you haven't received your code, you may need to contact the retailer from which you bought it.

Modes in my Mortal Kombat X are locked. How can I fix this?
There have been many teething problems with PC Steam versions of Mortal Kombat X. Most issues relate to the Steam pre-load system. While the game itself works, patches have been made to fix this. Go to your library, select MKX and locate DLC. Select install packs 1 to 20 to begin manual install. If problems persist, you may need to relaunch your Steam client. Online multi-player is still awaiting a fix.

I pirated Mortal Kombat X and am still having problems. How can I fix this?
In this instance, you get what you pay for. Some games contain piracy detection ticks that will render the game unplayable in various ways. If you wish to continue to have the best games you can from NetherRealm Studios, we encourage you to wait patiently until you can purchase legitimate copies.

Something is missing from my order. What should I do?
If something is physically missing from your Mortal Kombat X order, your best course of action is to contact the retailer you purchased the game from. Use clear and polite language to explain your problem. For in-game issues, refer to other questions in the FAQ.

Where are the PlayStation 3 & Xbox 360 versions?
Unfortunately, Mortal Kombat X has been delayed for last generation consoles until the Summer (rumoured June). These ported versions aren't being made by NetherRealm Studios, and we do not know the exact cause of the delay. It is safe to say current consoles are the better experience. For more information refer to: the original Summer Delay story.

How do I download my Future Raiden skin?
You will need to link your console account with your WB Play WBID. You can do this by using the log-in options available to PSN, Xbox Live & Steam main menus. Once linked, you will be able to redeem your Future Raiden skin. For more information refer to: the original Future Raiden story.

Uh... Who's next?
The "Who's Next?" tagline may seem arbitrary, but it applies in a wide variety of ways. With fatalities always a part of the game - it could mean who's next to die? It could also refer to who's next to invade in faction mode? Who's next to try to rule Outworld? Who's next to threaten Earthrealm? Who's next on the adaptive living towers? Who's next to rise through the competitive tournament ranks? Who's next to be offered as downloadable extras? There are many possible meanings. For more information refer to: the Who's Next? launch trailer.

I've exhausted all options and need help. What should I do?
If you've searched for solutions and been unable to resolve your issue(s), it may be time to contact Warner Brothers Game Support. By following the link, you'll find various methods to query them about your problem. Remember to use clear and polite language to explain as much about your situation as possible. Allow them adequate time to respond to your message.

As is so often the case, the game has found its way out through various channels, but today is unmistakably special. Mortal Kombat Online has received hundreds of excited messages throughout the day and night, from fans attending midnight launches and special events around the globe! We've enjoyed sharing the moment with you and tens of thousands of others following on Twitter!

It's been an incredible journey to what is shaping up to be one of the biggest Mortal Kombat's of all time! It began, as these things often do, in rumor and innuendo - some rumors stranger than others. A year ago, Kitana & Mileena voice actress Karen Strassman have us the first legitimate sniff at the sequel many of us close to the games were already anticipating.

The kountdown got serious in May, leading the unveiling of a reworked dragon logo for a new generation. Pre-game material got us asking who's next? before it all fell into place with the Mortal Kombat X Announcement Trailer. The flood began from there, with one of the quickest box art reveals in memory! While some fans got distracted by trailer soundtracks - we marvelled at what proved to be a trailer that told us a surprising amount! A trailer that started a global phenomenon, became one of YouTube's most watched of 2014, and even picked up KeyArts awards praise!

E3 2014 started with a bombshell reveal during the Sony Press Conference - introducing us to newcomers Kotal Kahn, D'Vorah & Ferra/Torr at the beginning of our massive event coverage! The new wave of characters arrived in time to make a splash in Mortal Kombat Online's annual Supreme Mortal Kombat Champion tournament - a prelude to their acceptance as new icons!

Characters have always been important to the Mortal Kombat promotional cycle, and while Warner Brothers have favoured keeping fandom's trusted sources at a distance, we enjoyed the unveiling of many characters. Trailers introduced: Raiden, Kano, Quan Chi, Kitana & Kung Lao, Reptile, The Cage Family, Briggs Family & Shaolin Monks. With each trailer, we gained a greater understanding of a Mortal Kombat that was still very familiar, yet becoming ever different.

The Story Mode loomed large over speculation, clearly informing a lot of the changes sweeping kombat. For the first time in years, Mortal Kombat returned to comic books, embracing the always important medium to expand the saga beyond the games! A partnership with DC Comics the benefit of Warner Brothers' ownership - one of several.

Yes, even while the game grew and excited our anticipation - there were key developments outside the game, as well! Mezco Toys blew us away with Wave 1 and Wave 2 of their sophisticated new toys. Rubies got us all talking with their Halloween costume previews. Scenes from a new live-action series also show promise, with new fighters like Ferra/Torr making the crossover soon.

Mortal Kombat X is here and the fun's just getting started! You've already set new records for Mortal Kombat Online's highest single day of traffic. Stick with us as we anticipate the onset of new downloadable content, on-going challenges in Mortal Kombat X Mobile, online battles via Gameplay & Matchmaking, the 2015 Supreme Mortal Kombat Champion voting tournament and more!

Conan O'Brien Battles Ed Boon in Mortal Kombat X
Ed Boon Battles Conan O'Brien in Mortal Kombat X Team Coco Stream

In a shocking turn of events, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has become embroiled in a violent fight with beloved late night TV doyen Conan O'Brien! The battle was captured live by #STREAMCOCO, where Boon -- accompanied by spunky sidekick Tyler Lansdown -- was heard to bully and shout abusive commands at O'Brien. O'Brien was visibly sick and frequently dizzy throughout the clip. Watch the archive below:

This was, of course, a special Mortal Kombat X live stream by Team Coco. Ed and Conan battled as Scorpion & Kung Lao respectively, testing their luck with kombat modifiers, including random fatalities, random dizziness and poison meteors.

The Texas Speedway win was a career first for Joe Gibbs Racing driver Erik Jones, who took pole position in the No. 20 GameStop Mortal Kombat X Camry. With the release of Mortal Kombat X around the world, the spectre of micro-transactions has reared its head. Fans struggling with elaborate input sequences will be able to purchase "Easy Fatalities" DLC packs to simplify the process. It confirms long running speculation about monetization in the 2015 fighter, beyond the standard bonus content.

MKX: GameStop Exclusive Kold War Scorpion Trailer
GameStop Kold War Scorpion Trailer Unleashes Store Exclusive

Fans who've ordered the limited edition version of Mortal Kombat X can look forward to a GameStop exclusive download of Kold War Scorpion. The new trailer shows this fan created design in action:

Kold War Scorpion is the work of MKOmmunity artist fear-sas, whose unique painted visions took the web by storm during Mortal Kombat X's development. See his original design artwork in a previous feature.

Other DLC bonuses include a Kollector's Edition Gold Scorpion designed by Coarse [full story], and the universal pre-order bonus: Goro. Future download skins include the Samurai Pack and 4 extra characters in The Kombat Pack.

Fans can gain $5 toward the purchase of Mortal Kombat X when they trade-in any PS4 or Xbox One game while purchasing at GameStop. Visit GameStop for details.

EDITOR'S NOTE
When bonuses are location limited, it's not a bad idea to play with high concept alternatives for iconic characters. Something seems to have been lost in translation in Kold War Scorpion, though. Even the artwork shown at the end of the trailer differs significantly from the mask-centric playable skin. Character-driven designs are preferred, but this undermines the concept. The seemingly permanently over lit mask is a bit of let down, as well.

Mortal Kombat X officially arrives for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One & PC this coming Tuesday, April 14th! Register to share your thoughts on the MKX Forum, and submit & discuss fan kreations in the Fan Submission forum!

RETRO Magazine Fighting Game Issue featuring Mortal Kombat
RETRO Videogame Magazine Features Mortal Kombat - Then & Now!

Mortal Kombat is in full focus and on the cover of this monther's RETRO Videogame Magazine! The all-fighting game issue is stringing together a combo of feature stories designed to work the body of the Mortal Kombat franchise, from past to Mortal Kombat X present!

Purchase RETRO Videogame Magazine #7 with the promo code: MKONLINE!

Included in the issue is an interview with Ed Boon talking the past, present, and future of the series; a feature look at the components that made the franchise a 20+ year success; preview hype for Mortal Kombat X; and a particularly fascinating read by Warren Davis -- Midway/Williams employee involved in the pioneering digitization process used in the original games. Davis' story goes deep into the development of the technology, eventually leading to a key moment:

For Terminator 2, we were still pulling digitized images off videotape. This made sense, since a lot of our reference material was shot in California on the actual sets. We also had access to some of the actors -- Robert Patrick and Eddie Furlong. We got Linda Hamilton's stunt double. And Arnold Schwarzenegger's stunt double wearing an Arnold mask. Those videotapes got sent back to us in Chicago where artists went through the tedious process of freezing each frame, grabbing it, and manually removing the background.

At some point during the development of T2, eventual Mortal Kombat co-creators Ed Boon and John Tobias let me know they were planning to use WTARG for their next game, a fighting game.

Mortal Kombat Online readers can purchase a digital copy of RETRO Videogame Magazine #7 for just $2US by using the promo code: MKONLINE.

If fans in the United States and Canada purchase the issue before noon, April 13th they enter the draw to win a copy of Mortal Kombat X for the platform of their choice!

ESL Mortal Kombat X Fatal 8 Exhibition Tournament
ESL Presents the Mortal Kombat X Fatal 8 Tournament

NetherRealm Studios' commitment to the competitive eSports scene established a new era for their flagship series with Mortal Kombat (2011). In 2015, the next generation of kombat takes the fight a step further with the ESL Mortal Kombat Pro League!

The ESL League will draw from the world's top competitive players, taking advantage of ESL's global eSports infrastructure to offer tournament challenges to players from North America, Russia, The United Kingdom & Europe! April begins with The Fatal 8 exhibition tournament -- an invitational bracket launching the pre-season with a high calibre face-off in Mortal Kombat X!

Pre-season cups begin April 19th to give players a chance to come to grips with the game - released officially on April 14th (US). Then the action ramps up May 3rd with the launch of the official ESL Pro League! Players will compete for weekly $1,000 prize pools and accumulate points to contest the Global Finals in July!

The Fatal 8 stream live from the ESL America Studios in Burbank, California at 2PM PDT - today (April 11th)! You'll be able to witness the action live as it streams via Twitch and discuss the ins and outs of the game, blow by blow, on the forums. The bracket promises a compelling show:

Perched at the top of The Fatal 8 elimination bracket is CR_SonicFox! The young upstart took the tournament scene by storm in 2014, overwhelming players with a natural aptitude, and infectious energy! He was crowned Injustice 2014 Evo World Champion when he shocked Pig of the Hut with a clean sweep, fighting out of the losers bracket 6-0. He also took top honors in the Mortal Kombat Evo Side Tournament co-sponsored by Mortal Kombat Online, emerging as unofficial World Champion. The relegated status of MK at last year's Evo has some questioning whether SonicFox is a pretender to the throne. In the minds of others, his name echoes deafeningly like a raging storm on the horizon of a new era!

2-time Evo World Champion Perfect Legend will be looking to slow the sugar rush of the next generation - re-emerging as a new recruit for sponsor Team Razer. MIT represents the Evo winning Terry bloodline - his brother Denzel the 2013 Champion. Tony-T travels from distant Australia, bringing a different international flavour to the UK's Mustard & Prodigal Son. Forever King & Tyrant have been stalwarts of the scene and could prove the difference as the Fatal 8 begin the culling!

MKX Mobile Exclusive Farmer Jax & Ninja Mime Skins
Jax & Johnny Cage Get Mobile Exclusive Unlockable Skins

With Mortal Kombat X Mobile available for iOS and coming soon to Android, fans can already begin their mastery of unlocking ahead of the Tuesday launch of the console & PC version [trailer]!

Players with a WBPlay WBID automatically qualify for access to the Future Raiden Skin -- but you'll have to play hard to unlock Farmer Jax and Ninja Mime Johnny Cage [pictured above].

Why a farmer and a mime? Long time fans know Ninja Mime is the Johnny Cage film least liked by Cyrax, seen most recently on billboards in Mortal Kombat (2011). Farmer Jax seems like a head scratcher for the steel-armed super soldier, but since he's retired from the Special Forces in MKX, we'll guess he's gone American Gothic in his down time. It's an honest living!

Farmer Jax and Ninja Mime are Mobile exclusive, but unlock for the console version, too! Mortal Kombat X officially hits PlayStation 4, Xbox One & PC next Tuesday, April 14th! Already unlocked the extra skins? Register to tell us on the Mortal Kombat X forum!

MKX Character Dialogues - Goro vs Johnny Cage
Pre-Order Bonus Goro Faces Off Against Johnny Cage in Intro Clip

Mortal Kombat X is less than a week away! As kombat draws nearer, fans who've pre-ordered the game can look forward to day one DLC access to Goro! He's facing off against Earthrealm champion Johnny Cage in a playable intro preview from NetherRealm Studios. Check it out:

Goro: Johnny Cage.
Johnny Cage: Don't you owe me some sunglasses?
Goro: Here is what you are owed!

Four-armed Shokan Royal Goro has nothing but contempt for the jovial Johnny Cage as they come face-to-face. Johnny's Hollywood days are well behind him as a member of the Special Forces, but that hasn't stopped him bringing a star's savior faire to the battlefield.

While the pair didn't have a lot to say to each other in Mortal Kombat (2011), Johnny's sunglasses quip is a nice nod to the 1995 feature film where the shades were crushed. Star Linden Ashby had many memorable moments as Johnny Cage, but his Third Act face-off with an animatronic Goro ranks high among them for the action movie one-liner: "Those were five hundred dollar sunglasses..."

Goro has interesting details in his entrance - one of the most requested during NeherRealm's #MKXfightintro hashtag. Like iconic images from the movie, he enters with a cape. Once tossed aside, it exposes glowing Shokan markings on his back. You can see more of Goro in action by watching the Official Trailer!

Get ready to take the fight anywhere! Mortal Kombat Online has received a multitude of reports throughout the day indicating users have been able to access Mortal Kombat X Mobile!

The free-to-play app is available for iOS and Android, with initial anecdotal reports favouring downloads on iPad and iPhone 5 (and newer). Some users have found the app listed as "No Longer Available" and should be advised to refresh the store, or check back at a later time as the rollout continues. MK Online users fraysol kindly sent in the above screenshots, showing some of the of the kards the game uses for its collectible fight system. Spoilers: IGN Host 25 Minutes of Mortal Kombat X Story Mode
Video Showcases Opening Chapter of Mortal Kombat X Story Mode

Mortal Kombat X: Chapter 1 centres around returning playable kombatant Johnny Cage, and his comrades in the Special Forces: Kenshi & Sonya Blade.

Their mission - join Raiden at the Sky Temple and defend the world from the forces of Shinnok and his demonic Netherrealm hordes. The plot loosely picks up from the epilogue of series do-over Mortal Kombat (2011), and covers the expected territory that was originally the premise for Mortal Kombat 4.

With a storyline spanning 25 years, questions about the relevance and representation of Shinnok's invasion have been frequent. It's difficult to conceive of the fallen elder god Shinnok leaving the saga in its first chapter - but even if that were the case - the MK4 plot is well serviced by the opening episode!

Scorpion & Sub-Zero feature as the initial antagonists of the piece - getting a "hero" entrance that makes beautiful use of the tropes of Scorpion's "get over here" attack. The undead ninja is in his 2011 design, maintaining some semblance of continuity between games, while Sub-Zero appears as the first of an army of revenants controlled by Quan Chi. By the time the fight moves to the Sky Temple, those revenants include other fighters killed in the last game: Sindel, Jax, Stryker, Kabal, Nightwolf & Smoke.

Jax shines as one of the fight opponents. His revenant look amps up the basics of his design, jacking up the classic look of the cyborg arms to become something spikey, menacing and unnatural. With the exception of Sub-Zero; Smoke has undergone the most decisive stylistic change between games. He insists on being called "Enenra" during the fight: a reference to mythological Japanese smoke monsters - which he was revealed to in fact be, in MK2011. Gone is the wispy white hair of the last game, in favour of a dark cowl more in line with his alternate attire. Fortunately, he wasn't the only cult favourite to make a substantial appearance.

Defending the Sky Temple beside Raiden is the wind god Fujin. He's a welcome return to the plot that originally introduced him as a boss character in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, and a playable fighter in Mortal Kombat 4. If you've been reading the comics, you've already seen Fujin back in action sometimes after this part of the story - but is he playable? The new design offers hope to fans, but it's tough to shake the suspicion that he could held back for later DLC, similarly to Martian Manhunter in Injustice.

Shinnok -- who is confirmed playable -- remains a somewhat unintimidating presence, but bucks MK4 level criticism with a fight sequence that shows moments of brilliance. His upright, effortless defense against punches is a highlight for a character who should feel above the inconveniences of physical exertion. A state he might achieve if he could keep hold of the notorious amulet at the centre of many recent MK games.

If you've seen the Cage Family Trailer, you know Johnny & Sonya eventually make their way to the stand-off with Shinnok. Theories about any dramatic end for our heroes can be dashed. Johnny discovers his inner power and goes toe-to-toe with the fallen elder god, helping secure the amulet so Raiden can suck his nemesis into it. Sonya's left to heal, and we're left to ponder the significance of Shinnok's fate and the presumption of his eventual return. For the full experience - check out the video [embedded above] or wait to play yourself!

Introducing Aqua - Official Mortal Kombat X Render
Obscure Klassic Enters MKX via Cross-Platform Unlocking

Edit Apr. 2: What the duck?! While we may have seen hoaxes like Ermac, rumors like Skarlet, and obscurities like Tremor make it to the modern roster - Aquilluxborg Hydroxybot has not been given that honor! Like water off a duck's back, you of course knew this was merely our annual April Fools gag! This article and its basic contents were a fabrication. NetherRealm Studios will be spotlighting MKX Mobile on today's Kombat Kast, though, so keep an eye out for it! Otherwise, have fun and keep listening for the quack that echoes!

Ahead of tomorrow's Kombat Kast live preview of Mortal Kombat X Mobile -- the first cross-platform unlockable character has been revealed! Aquilluxborg Hydroxybot joins the fight via iOS & Android with a character render and mini-bio!

Aquilluxborg Hydroxybot
Aquilluxborg Hydroxybot is the sole survivor of an ancient waterproof race. While in exile, he was awoken from hibernation during Outworld's attempt to merge with EarthRealm. The emperor had drained Outworld's natural resources, causing a drought that killed Aquilluxborg Hydroxybot's family and species. When Kotal Kahn claimed emperorship years after Shao Kahn's death, "Aqua" agreed to join Kotal's forces to fight against the warrior who drained his pond - Rain. Only when he has killed Rain will Aquilluxborg Hydroxybot reveal his true grand plan.

Fans will be able to unlock "Aqua" for consoles & PC by completing free-to-play MKX Mobile missions that grant special access via WBPlay. Registered WBID holders will also be able to use the service to redeem access to the free Future Raiden skin.

The official introduction of Aquilluxborg Hydroxybot continues NetherRealm's contemporary re-evaluation of past obscurities. Much like Tremor; Aqua owes his convoluted origins to discarded Trilogy era material [full story]. Tremor returns as a playable bonus character included in the Mortal Kombat X DLC Kombat Pass.

The mobile version of Aqua will likely be demoed during tomorrow's Kombat Kast #8 [preview], which will spotlight the MKX Mobile app. Get an early sneak peek via Kenshi mobile reveal and app footage recorded at GDC!

MKX: Blue Steel Sub-Zero DLC to Support eSport League
Blue Steel Sub-Zero DLC will Support New Competitive MK League

The downloadable content keeps on coming! With the announcement of the Who’s Next? Mortal Kombat X Worldwide Competitive Program; Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios have revealed the Blue Steel Sub-Zero skin.

The downloadable character skin will help fund the competitive league enterprise, contributing a portion of proceeds to on-going tournament prize pools. The competitive set-up marks a partnership with The Electronic Sports League (ESL), developing a more robust program on the back of improvements made in Mortal Kombat X.

Fans will likely recognize the "Blue Steel" skin as a palette swap of "Gold Scorpion" -- Kollector's Edition statue and bonus skin designed by Coarse [learn more]. NetherRealm Studios did not respond to inquiries about pricing or availability at the time of this article.

EDITOR'S NOTE
Right idea, questionable execution. Getting the series out of the palette swap ghetto has been key to its modern evolution. The Coarse design has a great artistic sensibility, but its lost when half-heartedly duplicated. I would have liked to have seen something unique and thematically complimentary to better support the competitive scene. A legendary Kung Lao, championship Liu Kang, or MMA Johnny Cage strike me as simple, effective designs that acknowledge the players, the theme, and/or the eSports concept. Even so, I hope fans will take an interest to support the cause.
