Writer Discusses Cancelled Mortal Kombat Comic Book
Gail Simone reveals sprawling multi-series comic event!

Popular comic book scribe Gail Simone has revealed she was working on a now abandoned Mortal Kombat project in 2018. She described the extensive research the project required in a Twitter chain, also teasing the ominous scope and conseqeuence the multi-series concept would have had!

Simone was working simultaneously on licensed comics for Mortal Kombat and My Little Pony, joking about a crossover between the disparate brands, while discussing the heavy research projects like these require for their intense followings.

Many comic book writers enter the field with existing practical knowledge of the vast shared universes at DC and Marvel Comics, but will sometimes have to consider how extra research will occupy their time. Simone's output in 2018 took a dip while she immersed herself in the minutiae of the two brands, dividing time between MLP days, and MK nights. A fan of Mortal Kombat's characters, she discovered "how truly extensive the mythology" is once diving in "with both feet".

Simone describes a twelve-issue Mortal Kombat maxi-series she would have written, with an extended role overseeing an additional three on-going series, with what seem to be ominous consequences! The writer declined to go into greater detail, alluding only to a 'sprawling' event that "would have changed a comic universe forever, for real".

Although no clear context is provided, the reference seems to imply major consequences for an existing comic book universe beyond Mortal Kombat itself.

As a property owned by Warner Brothers since 2009; Mortal Kombat tie-ins have been published by DC Comics, who have a long history of incorporating new acquisitions into their larger DC Universe. It could be speculated the three additional on-going series Simone would have overseen may be in the wider existing DC lineup, indicating some kind of crossover, or more permanent incorporation. The publisher currently offers several series detailing alternate realities within the DC multiverse, including the world of the Injustice games made by NetherRealm Studios.

Shawn Kittelsen crossed over from working in video games as DC Entertainment Creative Executive to write the Mortal Kombat X tie-in series in 2015. His involvement has since expanded to include a writing credit for Injustice 2 and the Mortal Kombat 11 video game. Kittelsen made it known the new release would not have a follow-up DC Comics companion last December, suggesting the sprawling concept was scrapped by then.

Mortal Kombat fighters encountered a version of the DC Universe in a 2008 crossover video game. As of 2012 there have been no plans for a sequel, but Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden have subsequently appeared as guest fighters in the Injustice series.

Mortal Kombat 11 Kombat Pack DLC Reveal Coming Soon
Ed Boon teases hopes for reveal next week!

It's been just over a month since Mortal Kombat 11 was released around the world -- and the only confirmed character for the downloadable Kombat Pack has been Shang Tsung. That gap in knowledge may be about to fill, with Ed Boon teasing hopes for a reveal next week -- if all goes well.

Shang Tsung was announced with a rendered likeness of film star Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa back in late March. He'll be joined by five additional characters available to pre-purchase with the Kombat Pack, or Premium editions of Mortal Kombat 11. This is in addition to Shao Kahn, who was released separately in April as a downloadable pre-order incentive.

Boon's tweet seems to suggest we'll hear more about all five fighters coming to the Kombat Pack, assuming some unknown factor allows it. Why does the Creative Director of NetherRealm Studios need to cross his fingers for a reveal? Your guess is as good as ours!

Bruce Campbell recently denied involvement with Mortal Kombat 11, responding to rumors of an Evil Dead crossover appearance. Industrious Nintendo Switch players inspired theories with the reported discovery of DLC character directories. Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has said he thinks his character is in.

Who do you hope to see join the lineup with Shang Tsung? Join the discussion on the Mortal Kombat 11 forum below and tell us your top picks!

Chicago hosts first MK11 Pro event!

Watch: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

Scar emerged from a heated grand final to claim the first major title of 2019! He had to pilot his Sonya Blade to a 3-2 victory over evergreen contender SonicFox, whose Jacqui Briggs walked defiantly into a projectile in the final seconds of the final match.

The win completed a perfect undefeated streak for Scar, who exploded with elation as soon as victory was secured. "Finish him" had barely appeared on the screen when the winner jumped to his feet, joining an ecstatic crowd in celebration after walking off some of the energy on stage. The win secured a $15,000 prize purse, Pro Kompetition points, and bragging rights on Mortal Kombat's home turf of Chicago!

SonicFox had been forced to fight out of the Second Chance bracket having taken an earlier loss to Tweedy. The flawless 2-0 win proved the competitive power of Baraka, dominant over Fox's Jacqui Briggs and Erron Black! It was fitting that eventual winner Scar ended Tweedy's impressive effort, while SonicFox was working his way past DizzyTT, Deoxys, AF0xyGrampa, and Semiij in the revenant run. Mortal Kombat 11 Dominates All Platforms in April
MK11 topped sales for all platforms!

Mortal Kombat 11 has followed through on an expected strong start, dominating video game sales in April! The NPD Group has released data highlighting the game's unique success, with analysis showing impressive feats in the first fortnight. Read on:

According to NPD Video Game Industry Analyst Mat Piscatella; Mortal Kombat 11 has become the second best-selling title for all of 2019, topping April sales across PlaySation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Sony confirmed the game's strong start in the PlayStation sales chart earlier this month. NPD figures take into account digital and physical sales.

According to Piscatella, the successful launch makes Mortal Kombat 11 the first game to dominate sales for all major platforms since Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock in October 2007!

The feats is made all the more impressive by figures accounting for just two weeks of the fighting game's availability! Business Insider reports the NPD data collection window spans from April 7th through to May 4th. Mortal Kombat 11 was officially released April 23rd.

Mortal Kombat's return to a Nintendo console has been a positive one - ending a twelve year drought! MK11 is the first Mature-rated release to top Nintendo sales since Bayonetta 2 in 2014. The last third-party developed title to feature on the list was Ubisoft's Mario + Rabbid Kingdom Battle in September 2017.

Mortal Kombat 11 is the follow-up to the highest selling title in the series' twenty-five history. In a recent interview with Gameinformer, Ed Boon revealed Mortal Kombat X has sold an estimated 11 million copies, more than doubling figures from its first year. We don't yet have an exact figure for units moved.

Warner Bros Set Mortal Kombat Movie Release Date
Coming to theatres 2021!

Warner Brothers has set a 2021 release date for its long awaited Mortal Kombat theatrical reboot. First-time feature director Simon McQuoid will begin shooting in South Australia later this year, with pre-production beginning very soon, according to a recent announcement.

Deadline reports the March 5th, 2021 release will put Mortal Kombat in a direct box office showdown with Sony's recently delayed Masters of the Universe.

The He-Man reboot has been pushed back significantly from its previous target of December this year. Only twenty-four hours separates the two scheduling announcements, lending to speculation there may yet be another change for one of the films. Although He-Man typically skews younger in demographic, the properties will likely attract overlapping audiences. DC Comics recently produced a He-Man crossover with another NetherRealm Studios video game property, the six-issue Injustice vs Masters of the Universe.

Mortal Kombat's return to the big screen has had its false starts over the years, but has been steadily advancing since James Wan joined as producer in 2015. The Aquaman director has navigated business and scripting challenges, expressing a desire to "do it right" throughout. Simon McQuoid has been attached to direct since late 2016.

With filming beginning later this year, an early 2021 release will give the film a solid year of filming and post-production. Follow and discuss all the progress with us in the Media & Merchandise forum!

Mortal Kombat Australian Pre-Production Announced
South Australian Premier announces 2019 filming.

The wait is finally over: Mortal Kombat will begin pre-production later this month, to begin filming in Australia later in the year! The movie reboot was officially announced with a special event held by local politician Steven Marshall, touting the investement as South Australia's biggest film production to date.

Simon McQuoid attended the announcement, having been attached to direct since late 2016. No new plot or casting details have emerged, but a release from the State Premier's office confirms several producers of the New Line Cinema project, including the long involved Australian hand of James Wan, Todd Garner, and Larry Kassanoff.

Filming will begin later this year at Adelaide Studios, with heavy emphasis on local crew and VFX houses. South Australia has a noteable history in the region's celluloid, with major releases Pitch Black and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome filmed there, as well as some shark scenes from Jaws, and revered Australian stand-outs The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Picnic at Hanging Rock, and Storm Boy. Locations near Adelaide Studios were recently used for Daniel Radcliffe starring thriller Escape From Pretoria.

Adelaide: South Australia will be the stage for Mortal Kombat, New Line Cinema’s highly anticipated epic action film, it was announced today by the Premier of South Australia Steven Marshall.

Mortal Kombat is a bold cinematic adventure based on the blockbuster videogame franchise. Bringing the legendary property to life on the big-screen is a team of world-renowned Australian filmmakers led by producers James Wan (Aquaman, The Conjuring films) and award-winning commercial filmmaker Simon McQuoid, who is also taking the helm in his feature directorial debut.

Todd Garner (Isn’t It Romantic, Tag) also produces, with Larry Kasanoff (Mortal Kombat, True Lies), E. Bennett Walsh (Men in Black: International, The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Michael Clear (The Nun, Lights Out), and Sean Robins (Playing with Fire, Tag) executive producing. The current screenplay is by Greg Russo (the upcoming Highwaymen). Pre-production on Mortal Kombat will commence later this month with production later this year.

Premier Steven Marshall made the announcement today at Adelaide Studios alongside the film’s Australian director, Simon McQuoid, executive producer E. Bennett Walsh, Australian production consultant Greg Basser (The Whistleblower, Passengers), and South Australia’s Minister for Innovation and Skills, David Pisoni.

In making the announcement, Premier Steven Marshall said Mortal Kombat will create an estimated 580 jobs and 1,500 extras employed, along with some AUD $70 million injected into the South Australian economy.

Led by the Australian creative team of McQuoid and Wan, the film will be shot on Adelaide Studios’ Sound Stages, utilising the state’s world-class crews and acting talent, with post-production in South Australia’s internationally acclaimed visual effects and post-production facilities.

“South Australia has a long and successful tradition of feature film making and Mortal Kombat will showcase our production skills to the world,” said Premier Steven Marshall.

“Mortal Kombat will be the largest film production in South Australia’s history and highlights the importance of engaging with the world’s major production houses.

“The State Government’s investment in Mortal Kombat will enhance the scope and reach of our production and post production capabilities, bringing the promise of fantastic new jobs for the local film industry,” he said.

“We are thrilled to be highlighting South Australian locations, talent and facilities for Mortal Kombat,” said Katherine Beyda, Executive Vice President, Physical Production, New Line Cinema.

“It brings together all of the components we need to make an ambitious action film a success, and we applaud the South Australian Film Corporation for their role in attracting the production to their region.”

Producer James Wan said, “I’m really happy and excited to be bringing another show back to Australia with Mortal Kombat, especially after having such a great experience filming Aquaman.

"Now we get to experience South Australia with its scenic locations and a wealth of artistic talent to work with. It will be perfectly suited for this fantasy-action project.”

Director Simon McQuoid said, “Having lived in Adelaide early in my career, I am thrilled to be back in South Australia to make my directorial debut with Mortal Kombat.

"We need many different elements for its success and have found them all right here—the uniquely beautiful landscapes, the outstanding world-class stage facilities and VFX houses, and the brilliant artists and technicians from across the film-making community.

"I’m grateful to the Premier and people of South Australia for having us, we’re all very excited to be here.”

Minister for Innovation and Skills David Pisoni said “Mortal Kombat highlights the importance of the Marshall Liberal Government’s commitment to support the creative arts as an industry that will deliver exciting career opportunities for South Australians.

“The film will provide unrivalled skills development opportunities for South Australian screen business and crews, whilst enabling the screen sector to update technologies and techniques to keep pace with global trends.

"The Marshall Government is excited to welcome the live action movie production of one of the world’s most successful games franchises, particularly with South Australia also being a centre for games development,” he said.

CEO of South Australian Film Corporation & Adelaide Studios, Courtney Gibson said, “Brought to life by Australian creative talent working in partnership with US studios, Mortal Kombat will be a boon for South Australia and a massive shot in the arm for our industry and Adelaide Studios, delivering unprecedented screen spend into the state and a huge number of jobs for South Australians.”

The confirmation is at last a light at the end of the tunnel for the long anticipated feature film return. Are you ready for Mortal Kombat on the big screen? Share your thoughts and keep your eyes peeled to the Media & Merchandise forum for updates!

Fans chose Days Gone as the best new release in an April player poll, but the late coming Mortal Kombat couldn't be bested for digital sales! The latest download chart shows MK11 edged out Days Gone on the PlayStation Store, with franchised third-person shooter World War Z coming in third.

Bruce Campbell Denies Mortal Kombat 11 Evil Dead DLC
If chins could kill... rumors!

Mortal Kombat 11 will gain six more characters when The Kombat Pack downloadable content is revealed in the coming months. Guest characters from other franchises will inevitably be part of that group, but according to Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell -- Ash Williams won't be one of the crossover killers!

Campbell issued the elaborate denial [pictured above] via Twitter, using klassic MKII graphics to deliver a groovy fatality to widespread online rumors. Speculation has stemmed from the reported extraction of in-game data that included directories for multiple DLC characters, including the ambiguously named "Ash".

Separating the actor from a character he originated with Sam Raimi's classic 1981 horror movie seems unimaginable. Campbell has reprised the role of Ash Williams for two iconic Evil Dead sequels, multiple video games, and most recently the 2015 Starz television revival: Ash vs Evil Dead.

It's possible the claim denotes a semantic distinction between the original character and some later incarnation, or is simply a bold faced lie. Either way, speculation now inevitably turns toward other plausible explanations, such as the return of Ashrah, or a completely new character. One thing's for sure - the discovery may've come from Nintendo ports, but we won't expect a Pokémon crossover any time soon!

Mortal Kombat Inducted Into World Video Game Hall of Fame
Original MK creators receive honor via video message.

There exists in New York City a World Video Games Hall of Fame and the arcade klassic Mortal Kombat has had the honor of being inducted into its hallowed halls! The original MK joined an eclectic class of 2019 inductees, nominated by the public, and selected by a panel of industry experts, journalists, and historians. Read on:

2019 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony | Mortal Kombat Creator's Thank You

As reported by Variety; The Strong Museum welcomed Mortal Kombat into its Hall of Fame with a ceremony in New York City. The induction recognized the game's lasting achievements in four key areas of criteria: iconic status, influence, geographical reach, and longevity.

Original creators Ed Boon, John Tobias, and John Vogel appeared together in a pre-recorded video filmed at NetherRealm Studios, thanking the organization for the honor.

The Strong interactive museum established its Hall of Fame in 2015. The organization curates a collection of electronic games and artefacts purported to be in the 60,000 range, annually adding new titles to its Hall of Fame. Other 2019 inductees included Super Mario Kart, Colossal Cave Adventure, and Microsoft Solitaire. Past inductions have counted Street Fighter II, Doom, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Pong, and many others.

The influence of Mortal Kombat's earliest chapters can still be felt today, factoring heavily into the plot and character lineup in April's Mortal Kombat 11 release! It might be argued that Mortal Kombats II & 3 deserve a place in the prestigious list as well, but there's simply no escaping the importance of the original chapter, which introduced iconic fighters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Shang Tsung, as well as memorable trademarks like Mirror Matches, Blood Mode and Fatalities!

Watch the full induction ceremony and thank you videos embedded in the are above. Dive deeper into the series' history and nostalgia by joining the discussion in the 2D Kombat Klassics forum!
