Mortal Kombat Movie Casts Scorpion & Shang Tsung
Two major roles filled for movie reboot.

As the start of photography draws near for the Mortal Kombat movie reboot, two more major roles from the original game's lineup have been filled! A new report reveals Scorpion and Shang Tsung have joined the growing cast.

Variety has the scoop on the major casting news, revealing Singaporean actor Chin Han will play Shang Tsung, and Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada will become Scorpion. Both actors will be familiar faces to fans familiar with neighbouring genre cinema.

Chin Han and Hiroyuki Sanada (via Variety)

Hiroyuki Sanada has become a recurring character actor in Hollywood since appearing in 1998 supernatural Japanese thriller Ring. He appeared in various featured martial arts roles in The Last Samurai, The Wolverine, and 47 Ronin, and recently appeared as Musashi in HBO's Westworld. He was also memorable as Captain Kaneda in cult sci-fi thriller Sunshine, and opposed Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye as a mob boss in Avengers: Endgame.

Chin Han became part of the zeitgeist with his appearance as mob accountant Lau in Christopher Nolan's definitive 2008 superhero epic The Dark Knight. He more recently featured as Togusa in the controversial live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell.

Shang Tsung was the architect of the Shaolin tournament in the original Mortal Kombat video game plot, gathering various martial artists to his island for a tournament to decide the fate of Earthrealm. Scorpion was an interloper seeking vengeance from beyond the grave against competitor Sub-Zero, to be played by Joe Taslim.

How much of these original plots will be retained in the big screen adaptation remains to be seen. At 58 years old, Hiroyuki Sawada is notably senior to much of the cast, and typical depictions of Hanzo Hasashi (aka; Scorpion). The 1995 feature film directed by Paul Anderson infamously recast Scorpion and Sub-Zero as 'slaves under Shang Tsung's power'.

Today's news comes on the back of reported casting of Kano and Sonya Blade. The recent additions join Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and more. Simon McQuoid directs his first feature, with filming to begin in Australia next month.

Mortal Kombat Movie Finds Kano as Three More Cast
Kano actor reportedly cast with Sonya in talks.

The Mortal Kombat movie production is filling up its cast of iconic fighters from the original game! A new report reveals three more actors are in the final stages of joining the film, with Kano and Sonya Blade revealed to be joining other recent additions.

The Hollywood Reporter is keeping close to the project, reporting that Australian comedic actor Josh Lawson (Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues) has closed a deal to portray the Black Dragon mercenary Kano, with Jessica McNamee (The Meg) in talks to appear as his Special Forces arch-rival, Sonya Blade.

Lewis Tan is also said to be nearing his second go around with the Mortal Kombat franchise, entering final negotiations to play an as yet unrevealed feature chararater. He can currently be seen in the Netflix series Wu Assassins, having also appeared in Marvel's Iron Fist for the streaming service. He made a memorable cameo as Shatterstar in the theatrically released Deadpool 2.

Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, and Josh Lawson (via The Hollywood Reporter)

Tan was previously cast as wayward Shaolin warrior Kung Jin in the ultimately unreleased third Mortal Kombat webseries. He can be seen in costume in a photo released in 2015. The unreleased project is unlikely to bear relevance to the new role, although the elder Kung Lao is among the major characters yet to be cast. Scorpion and Kuai Liang are also possibilities.

The new actors will join a growing cast, that already includes Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and more. Photography will begin in Australia, next month. Simon McQuoid will direct r-rated violence with a sense of humor for a theatrical release in 2021.

Keith David To Voice Spawn in Mortal Kombat 11
Animated series actor to voice guest fighter!

Legendary star of screen and stage Keith David has confirmed he will be provide the voice of Spawn when the comic book anti-hero comes to Mortal Kombat 11 in 2020!

David has had a long and illustrious career, starring in films such as The Thing, Platoon, They Live, and Pitch Black, as well as lending his commanding voice to characters in Adventure Time, Rick and Morty, and the Mass Effect and Saints Row game series.

He was the voice of Al Simmons (aka; Spawn) for three seasons of the critically acclaimed HBO animated series: Todd McFarlane's Spawn. His performance helped the adult animation earn an Emmy nomination for its third season, in 1999. Fans have welcomed the news of his return to the role on Twitter, where the actor made the announcement.

Spawn was announced as a guest character in June, and formally revealed with the recent Kombat Pack trailer and character render artwork. Creator Todd McFarlane praised the video game interpretation at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, having talked up the possbiility of a crossover for several years. Fellow guest character Terminator T-800 is reported to only bare the likeness of Arnold Schwarzenegger, without his iconic voice.

Spawn Mortal Kombat 11 Character Render
Comic book guest strikes a pose!

Todd McFarlane's Spawn has stepped out of the shadows and into the spotlight as one of three guest characters coming to Mortal Kombat 11's Kombat Pack! You've seen him in the Kombat Pack trailer - now examine his living costume in official character art!

The rough, rippled texture of Spawn's costume evokes its nature as part of his hellspawn body. It appears very reminiscent of the live-action suit created for actor Michael Jai White in 1997's Spawn feature film, with spiked gauntlets and straps that favour the classic comic book design.

Spawn was confirmed with the first Shang Tsung & Kombat Pack announce trailer in June, but will be the last downloadable content character to arrive in-game. Early access is scheduled to begin March 17, 2020. A brief bio was released with the original reveal:

Todd McFarlane's Spawn is one of the world's best-selling and longest-running monthly comic books, with hundreds of millions of copies sold worldwide in more than 120 countries and 15 different languages. The Spawn comic book tells the story of Al Simmons, an elite government assassin who was betrayed and killed by the CIA. Instead of dying, he sells his soul to Hell for a second chance at life, and becomes Spawn, an unstoppable soldier fighting the underworld. Spawn is voiced by Keith David, the original voice actor from 'Todd McFarlane's Spawn,' the Emmy award-winning HBO animated series.

Creator Todd McFarlane thinks Spawn lives up to the comics - do you? Tell us what you think in the comments below and join the discussion on the Mortal Kombat 11 forum!

Schwarzenegger Reportedly Not Voicing MK11 Terminator
This time he won't be back!

The first full Kombat Pack trailer has revealed the stunning downloadable likeness of Arnold Schwarzenegger, but a new report claims the actor won't be providing a voice to go with his guest spot in Mortal Kombat 11.

Schwarzenegger reprises his iconic role as the T-800 in conjunction with Skydance and Paramount Picture's upcoming sequel film: "Terminator: Dark Fate". It continues the time travelling story begun with 1984's The Terminator and its lauded 1991 sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

As in the film; the cyborg killing machine's organic outer skin will reflect the visible aging shared by the 72 year old actor, but his equally iconic accent will be missing according to The Hollywood Reporter, who learned a sound-alike will be used instead.

Creative Director Ed Boon tweeted his disbelief over acquiring the screen legend's likeness for Mortal Kombat 11 - a statement that was taken to include his vocal delivery. With the new report in mind, the comment may now reflect the innate difficulty in closing the deal.

It's unclear if the incredible likeness was acquired in-house at NetherRealm Studios, or supplied by Paramount Pictures from digital scans used in creating special effects for the film.

During his time as Los Angeles Governor, Schwarzenegger signed a 2005 bill to restrict the sale of games containing explicitly sexual and violent content. It's unclear if this has contributed to his lack of involvement in Mortal Kombat 11. Other gaming credits include providing a voice for games based on the first two Terminator sequels, as well as a recent guest spot as The Terminator, in WWE 2K16.

They were teased back in June: Now Terminator T-800 and The Joker can officially join the Mortal Kombat 11 cast as upcoming playable guest fighters!

As anticipated: the likeness of Arnold Schwarzenegger brings the grizzled visage of the iconic T-800 to life in conjunction with the November theatrical release of Terminator: Dark Fate. Mehcad Brooks Shares Mortal Kombat Training Photo
The actor is preparing to become Jax!

Mehcad Brooks has become a familiar presence as a regular on TV's Supergirl, now entering its fifth season. As James Olsen, he was never the lanky, freckled redhead dwarfed by best pal Superman in comic books, but the impressive 38 year old appears to be taking his physique to another level in preparation to play Jax in the Mortal Kombat movie reboot.

Having already reacted to news of his casting; Brooks shared a revealing photo to Instagram showing off his transformation. It appears training has added some serious bulk to the actor and model's already muscular 6'4" frame!

Jax was originated for arcades in Mortal Kombat II by bodybuilder John Parrish, whose arms and physique inspired changes to the digitized character design. A special forces soldier with phenomenal strength, Jax was later enhanced with now iconic metal arms in MK3.

Brooks appears to be working hard to embody the character as fans know it, shedding the presumptions that come with his CW past as he also leaves Supergirl. In another message to followers, he reminisced about growing up playing Mortal Kombat video games.

This didn’t really hit me until I was on the plane to Australia Sunday and I mouthed the words “I’m in Mortal Kombat”. I’ve been playing this game since I was a kid with #Scorpion and #Jax I played it most days after homework, sometimes before and up all night at friend’s places at sleepovers. My friends parents would ask us why we hadn’t slept and we just kept saying shit like “fatality” and “finish him”. We were nerds. Video game junkies they called us. Now y’all are called #gamers and get paid for it. I was before my time I guess. #MortalKombat was kind of the violent uncle I never had. I love you MK. You raised me. Don’t tell Mom. #justakidfromaustin

Filming for Motal Kombat begins next month in South Australia, where almost 2,500 hopefuls lined up to appear as extras over the weekend. The film will also feature Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, and Tadanobu Asano as Raiden. Share your thoughts about the live-action Jax in the comments below and follow all the MK movie news and discussion on the Media & Merchandise forum!

Australian Hopefuls Lineup For Mortal Kombat Extras
South Australia goes Kombat kasting krazy!

They came in droves, wielding a unique array of skills and attire, all united by a single mutual goal: to participate in the next Mortal Kombat. It wasn't a scene from the classic fighting game franchise, but rather the first stage in the process for casting around 1,500 extras who'll appear in the 2021 feature film reboot...

The island nation of Australia is far more sprawling than the isolated domain of Shang Tsung's tournament. It's specifically the lower central state of South Australia that's gone 'kombat krazy' since the multi-million dollar production was first announced in May. The extras casting call made front page news over the weekend as Adelaide's The Advertiser documented the Sunday event.

The quiet suburb of Glenside is playing host to the biggest film production of its type to grace the state, attracting an estimated 2,500 hopefuls who lined around the block for a chance to be chosen for extras roles.

The masses of humanity were marched through a process of being photographed and filed, with particular attention given by Heeson Casting staff to unique physical attributes, such as tattoos and piercings. Some were trained martial artists, others simply eager fans who chose to dress in costume in an effort to get noticed. In the end, over half are expected to return for filming beginning in September. The more physically impressive - the better, but Angela Heesom told The Sunday Mail they're looking for "average" people, as well. Some won't know until they're summoned to shoot as late as December.

Not much could be inferred from the extras casting session, but The Sunday Mail reports one intriguing exception to the adult cut-off: Young girls of Asian descent aged 6 and 9.

Sources tell us the production is actively seeking extras of Asian heritage, with several Japanese and Chinese girls present. For fans of the series, the ethnic significance will come as no surprise, but children are a rarity for the violent martial arts franchise. It may be as simple as scenes populated with families in the background, but some speculation will lead to uniquely significant roles, such as the murdered family of Scorpion.

Almost nothing is known about the plot of the new feature film, which will be led by first-time feature director Simon McQuoid, with fellow Australian director James Wan (Aquaman) serving as one of the key producers. Much has been made about efforts to "do it right", with writer Greg Russo touting R-rated fatalities to come.

Five iconic characters have been cast so far, with Japanese star Tadanobu Asano tweeting about his role as Raiden after reports he was in negotiation. Scorpion's mortal nemesis Sub-Zero was the first character released.

Mortal Kombat Actors React to Casting News
Raiden actor & more react to joining new movie.

With news of several major roles now cast, fans and actors alike have been celebrating the beginnings of a new Mortal Kombat movie. Four of the five actors cast so far have used social media to react, including Tadanobu Asano -- the man who would be Raiden! Read on:

Along with retweeting several articles about his casting negotiation, the Japanese actor (Ichi the Killer, Zatoichi) seemingly confirmed his status by declaring "I am RAIDEN" via Twitter. Tadanobu's has been just one of the messages of thanks and readiness shared by the cast, so far. See their reactions below:

Joe Taslim was the first to make his role known with news of his casting as Sub-Zero reported early in July. Taslim shared the news with artwork by Nikolai Baslajik, who has created portraits for all of the cast, so far.

The Mortal Kombat movie reboot begins filming in South Australia in the coming weeks for a 2021 theatrical release. Simon McQuoid directs with James Wan among producers. Artist Envisions Mortal Kombat Movie Cast
BossLogic renders new cast as Kombat icons!

Four iconic characters have reportedly been cast for the Mortal Kombat live-action movie reboot, which remains largely enshrouded in mystery. Details concerning plot and costume design remain unknown, but noted concept artist Nikolai "BossLogic" Baslajik has imagined the new stars in their upcoming roles. Check it out:

The prolific digital artist shared his kreations to Twitter and Instagram, where he also offered a stunning series of fan casting concepts earlier this year. The new images depict the much talked about Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and newcomer Sisi Stringer as Mileena. Update: Subsequent posts have added Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, and Chin Han as Shang Tsung.

The Advertiser Sunday Mail reports filming is "weeks away" with extensive extras casting already underway in South Australia, where the production will film for a theatrical release in 2021.

Mortal Kombat 11 Kombat Pack Trailer This Week
DLC spotlight trailer coming Wednesday!

The wait for Mortal Kombat 11's downloadable extras has been a little longer than previous games, but the wait is almost over! A full Kombat Pack trailer arrives this week, as teased with an amusing released to Twitter earlier this month. Read on:

NetherRealm Studios and Creative Director Ed Boon have certainly heard fans' cry for more since the game's April release! They acknowledged the social media chorus with a teaser video that shows Shang Tsung on an iPhone and promises a full trailer Wednesday, August 21st!

Shang Tsung was the first downloadable character announced way back in March. An official gameplay reveal trailer also confirmed three more of the five remaining Kombat Pack characters, with Nightwolf arriving to early access this week.

Efforts to placate impatient fans have included the release of a first-look at Sindel in a screenshot that recalls the heavy shadows typical of past game's DLC reveal trailers. Spawn creator Todd McFarlane also hyped his character's inclusion during San Diego Comic-Con.

With two guest characters strongly suspected but yet to be revealed - what do you hope to see in the Wednesday trailer? Tell us all about it in the comments below and connected with MK Online on the Mortal Kombat 11 forum, Twitter, and Facebook.

Mortal Kombat Movie Adds Jax, Mileena & Raiden
Supergirl & Thor actors lineup as iconic fighters.

The cast of the Mortal Kombat movie just got a massive injection of characters & talent with three roles confirmed cast, and a fourth in negotiation! Read on:

The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively confirmed the casting of iconic Mortal Kombat fighters: Jackson "Jax" Briggs, Mileena, and Liu Kang!

Mehcad Brooks became a familiar face on TV's Supergirl playing an impressive, off-model version of Jimmy Olsen, who also doubled as the armored vigilante Guardian. He'll now apply that muscle to the role of Jax. Australian unknown Sisi Stringer will step into the role of Mileena. Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano, who fittingly appeared in Thor: Ragnarok as one of the thunder god's friends, Hogun, is reportedly in talks to play the thunder god Raiden.

THR notes New Line Cinema is seeking a "diverse international cast" that authentically reflects the origins of the game series, recruiting actors from various realms of experience, including film, television, and martial arts.

Canadian actor Ludi Lin is also locked in according to the THR report, confirming very recent news he was in negotiations to play Liu Kang. He confirmed as much himself, thanking fans for their support for the series, while paying homage to Robin Shou, who iconically played the role in 1995's Mortal Kombat and the sequel Mortal Kombat; Annihilation.

The confirmed trio joins Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero with filming to begin later this year in Australia for a 2021 theatrical release. Simon McQuoid makes his feature directing debut, which is said to feature R-rated action with a sense of humor.

Mortal Kombat Movie Eyeing Power Rangers Star for Liu Kang
Actor seen in Black Mirror and Aquaman reportedly in talks.

So far only one feature role has been confirmed cast for the upcoming 2021 Mortal Kombat movie reboot. Fresh reports suggest a prominent actor is in serious talks to play Liu Kang. Read on:

Ludi Lin (right) as "Lance" in Black Mirror Season 5 episode "Striking Vipers".

Variety is reporting actor Ludi Lin has entered negotiations with New Line Cinema. The Chinese born Canadian actor starred as the Black Ranger in Saban's big screen Power Rangers reboot, and more recently featured as a virtual martial artist in the Mortal Kombat inspired episode of Black Mirror: Strking Vipers [pictured above].

Lin seems to be a strong prospect having also appeared as Captain Murk in 2018's Aquaman: a DC Comics superhero epic directed by James Wan, who is also serving as producer on Mortal Kombat. Born in the Fujian province, he received education in Australia, where filming will begin later this year. Australian Simon McQuoid will direct.

Liu Kang's role in the Mortal Kombat feature film will be heavily scrutinized by fans who know him best as a Shaolin Monk destined to defend the realm of Earth as champion of the Mortal Kombat tournament. His story was memorably adapted in the 1995 feature film starring Robin Shou.

James Wan has stressed efforts to "get it right", actively rebuking plot rumors. Under director Kevin Tancharoen, Liu Kang was rumored to be reinvented as a supermarket clerk. Tancharoen gave the character an amoral edge when Brian Tee appeared in the official Mortal Kombat' Legacy webseries.

Nightwolf walks with animal spirits beside him, unleashing new enhanced attacks with hawk and bear motifs, while also calling upon old favourites to hack, slash, spear, and strike at his rivals! Just like Mortal Kombat 3, he can summon lightning strikes and deflect projectiles. His most iconic weapons remain his deadliest, controlling the short, mid, and ranged with close quarters knife stabs, graceful axe swipes, and arrow projectiles!

The trailer pits Nightwolf against Baraka, Kotal Kahn, and newly instated Black Dragon rival Kabal, whose death culminates in another gruesome fatality for the series. Victory is punctuated with a roar echoed by a beying wolf spirit somewhere on a moonlit mountain. A cinematic capper for the hotly anticipated returning fighter!

As previously reported, early access for Kombat Pack holders begins August 13th. The trailer also confirms a Klassic Arcade Fighter Skin Pack with MK3 inspired designs for Jax, Kung Lao, and Kano.

Nightwolf is the second downloadable fighter released as part of the Kombat Pack. He joins Shang Tsung, with Sindel already teased and much discussed guest Spawn. Was Nightwolf worth the wait? Tell us all about it in the comments below and join the discussion on the Mortal Kombat 11 forum!
